2026-06-30perf evlist: Add reference countIan Rogers1-1/+1
This a no-op for most of the perf tool. The reference count is set to 1 at allocation, the put will see the 1, decrement it and perform the delete. The purpose for adding the reference count is for the python code. Prior to this change the python code would clone evlists, but this has issues if events are opened, etc. This change adds a reference count for the evlists and a later change will add it to evsels. The combination is needed for the python code to operate correctly (not hit asserts in the evsel clone), but the changes are broken apart for the sake of smaller patches. 2026-06-04perf data ctf: replace libbabeltrace with babeltrace2-ctf-writerMichael Jeanson1-17/+16
The 1.x branch of Babeltrace has been superseded by 2.x in 2020 and has been unmaintained since 2022, efforts have started to remove it from popular distributions. Babeltrace 2.x offers a very similar 'ctf-writer' library that can be used with minimal changes for the '--to-ctf' feature and has been packaged since Debian 11 and Fedora 32. This patch replaces the 'libbabeltrace' build feature with 'babeltrace2-ctf-writer' using pkgconfig detection, adjusts the naming of the public headers and applies minor API cleanups. There is no changes to the output ctf traces, the ctf-writer API still implements version 1.8 of the CTF specification that can be read by either Babeltrace 1 / 2 or any CTF compliant reader. Also remove some ifdefs in the cli option parsing to allow printing the helpful error message with '--to-ctf' when built without babeltrace2. 2026-05-20perf tool: Remove evsel from tool APIs that pass the sampleIan Rogers1-1/+1
As struct perf_sample now directly contains its own resolved evsel pointer, passing the evsel separately is redundant and clutters the interface. Remove the redundant evsel parameter from tool-specific handlers and structures, ensuring the tool always directly accesses the evsel bound to the sample. This simplifies the API signatures and eliminates the risk of passing an inconsistent evsel. 2026-04-02perf data convert ctf: Pipe mode improvementsIan Rogers1-4/+59
Handle the finished_round event. Set up the CTF events when the feature event desc is read. In pipe mode the attr events will create the evsels and the feature event desc events will name the evsels. The CTF events need the evsel name, so wait until feature event descs are read (in pipe mode) before setting up the events except for tracepoint events. Handle the tracing_data event so that tracepoint information is available when setting up tracepoint events. 2026-04-02perf header: Refactor pipe mode end marker handlingIan Rogers1-6/+3
In non-pipe/data mode the header has a 256-bit bitmap representing whether a feature is enabled or not. In pipe mode features are written out in perf_event__synthesize_features as PERF_RECORD_HEADER_FEATURE events with a special zero sized marker for the last feature. If a new feature is added the last feature marker event appears as that feature from old pipe mode perf data. As the event is zero sized it will fail to be processed and generally terminate perf. Add a last_feat variable to the header that in non-pipe/data mode is just HEADER_LAST_FEATURE. In pipe mode compute the last_feat by handling zero sized feature events, assuming they are the marker and updating last_feat accordingly. Potentially a feature event could be zero sized and so still process the feature event, just ignore the error if it fails. As perf_event__process_feature can properly handle pipe mode data, migrate users to it except for report that still wants to group events and stop header printing with the last feature marker. Make perf_event__process_feature non-fatal in the case of a newer feature than this version of perf's HEADER_LAST_FEATURE, which was the behavior all users wanted. Building with NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 uncovered some more build failures: - Make building of data-convert-bt.c to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y - perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += scripts/ - bpf_kwork.o needs also to be dependent on CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y - The python binding needed some fixups and util/trace-event.c can't be built and linked with the python binding shared object, so remove it in tools/perf/util/setup.py and exclude it from the list of dependencies in the python/perf.so Makefile.perf target. Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build failures: - The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files, now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints. - We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean way. From Athira: <quote> tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build -perf-y += kvm-stat.o +perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o </quote> Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests. - s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT. Also from Athira: <quote> With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment: - Without libtraceevent-devel installed - With libtraceevent-devel installed - With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1” </quote> Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/. 2021-04-29perf data: Add JSON exportNicholas Fraser1-1/+1
This adds a feature to export perf data to JSON. The resolved symbols are exported into the JSON so that external tools don't need to load the dsos themselves (or even have access to them at all.) This makes it easy to load and analyze perf data with standalone tools where direct perf or libbabeltrace integration is impractical. The exporter uses a minimal inline JSON encoding without any external dependencies. Currently it only outputs some headers and sample metadata but it's easily extensible. Use it like this: $ perf data convert --to-json out.json Committer notes: Fixup a __printf() bug that broke the build: util/data-convert-json.c:103:11: error: expected ‘)’ before numeric constant 103 | __(printf, 5, 6) | ^~ | ) util/data-convert-json.c: In function ‘output_sample_callchain_entry’: util/data-convert-json.c:124:2: error: implicit declaration of function ‘output_json_key_format’; did you mean ‘output_json_format’? 2019-06-25tools perf: Move from sane_ctype.h obtained from git to the Linux's originalArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
We got the sane_ctype.h headers from git and kept using it so far, but since that code originally came from the kernel sources to the git sources, perhaps its better to just use the one in the kernel, so that we can leverage tools/perf/check_headers.sh to be notified when our copy gets out of sync, i.e. when fixes or goodies are added to the code we've copied. This will help with things like tools/lib/string.c where we want to have more things in common with the kernel, such as strim(), skip_spaces(), etc so as to go on removing the things that we have in tools/perf/util/ and instead using the code in the kernel, indirectly and removing things like EXPORT_SYMBOL(), etc, getting notified when fixes and improvements are made to the original code. Hopefully this also should help with reducing the difference of code hosted in tools/ to the one in the kernel proper. Add a 'path' member to 'struct perf_data'. It will keep the configured path for the data (const char *). The path in struct perf_data_file is now dynamically allocated (duped) from it. This scheme is useful/used in following patches where struct perf_data::path holds the 'configure' directory path and struct perf_data_file::path holds the allocated path for specific files. The field perf_callchain, if available, is added to the sampling events during the CTF conversion. It is an array of u64 values. The perf_callchain_size field contains the size of the array. Possible analyses with those data: dynamic flamegraphs, correlation with other tracing data like a userspace trace.
