2026-06-06perf sched: Free callchain nodes in idle thread cleanupArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-0/+15
free_idle_threads() relies on the thread priv destructor (free()) to clean up idle_thread_runtime structs. But free() doesn't walk the callchain_cursor linked list or the callchain_root tree allocated by callchain_cursor__copy() and callchain_append() during --idle-hist processing. Every idle thread with callchain data leaks these nodes. Introduce callchain_cursor_cleanup() to free the cursor's linked list of callchain_cursor_node entries, and call it together with free_callchain() in free_idle_threads() before thread__put(). 2026-06-03perf symbol: Add setters for bitfields sharing a byte to avoid concurrent ↵Ian Rogers1-2/+2
update issues A problem with putting bitfields into struct symbol is that other bits in the symbol could be updated concurrently and only one update to the underlying storage unit happen, leading to lost updates. To avoid this, use atomics to atomically read or set part of 16-bits of flags in the symbol. Add accessors to simplify this. The idle value has 3 values in preparation for a later change that will lazily update it. 2026-05-20perf callchain: Don't pass evsel and sampleIan Rogers1-4/+4
As struct perf_sample now directly contains its own resolved evsel pointer, passing the evsel separately is redundant and clutters the interface. Remove the redundant evsel parameter from callchain-specific handlers and structures, ensuring the tool always directly accesses the evsel bound to the sample. This simplifies the API signatures and eliminates the risk of passing an inconsistent evsel. 2026-04-05perf sample: Make sure perf_sample__init/exit are usedIan Rogers1-3/+7
The deferred stack trace code wasn't using perf_sample__init/exit. Add the deferred stack trace clean up to perf_sample__exit which requires proper NULL initialization in perf_sample__init. Make the perf_sample__exit robust to being called more than once by using zfree. Make the error paths in evsel__parse_sample exit the sample. Add a merged_callchain boolean to capture that callchain is allocated, deferred_callchain doen't suffice for this. Pack the struct variables to avoid padding bytes for this. Similiarly powerpc_vpadtl_sample wasn't using perf_sample__init/exit, use it for consistency and potential issues with uninitialized variables. Similarly guest_session__inject_events in builtin-inject wasn't using perf_sample_init/exit. The lifetime management for fetched events is somewhat complex there, but when an event is fetched the sample should be initialized and needs exiting on error. The sample may be left in place so that future injects have access to it. Signed-off-by: Ian Rogers <irogers@google.com> Signed-off-by: Namhyung Kim <namhyung@kernel.org>
2026-03-19perf callchain: Refactor callchain option parsingIan Rogers1-13/+60
record_opts__parse_callchain is shared by builtin-record and builtin-trace, it is declared in callchain.h. Move the declaration to callchain.c for consistency with the header. In other cases make the option callback a small static stub that then calls into callchain.c. Make the no argument '-g' callchain option just a short-cut for '--call-graph fp' so that there is consistency in how the arguments are handled. This requires the const char* string to be strdup-ed in __parse_callchain_report_opt. For consistency also make parse_callchain_record use strdup and remove some unnecessary casts. Also, be more explicit about the '-g' behavior if there is a .perfconfig file setting. 2026-01-23perf map_symbol: Switch from holding maps to holding threadIan Rogers1-5/+7

2024-09-10perf callchain: Allow symbols to be optional when resolving a callchainIan Rogers1-4/+4

struct callchain_list is 352bytes in size, 232 of which are brtype_stat. brtype_stat is only used for certain callchain_list items so make it optional, allocating when necessary. So that printing doesn't need to deal with an optional brtype_stat, pass an empty/zero version. 2023-06-12perf callchain: Use pthread keys for tls callchain_cursorIan Rogers1-2/+43
Pthread keys are more portable than __thread and allow the association of a destructor with the key. Use the destructor to clean up TLS callchain cursors to aid understanding memory leaks. Committer notes: Had to fixup a series of unconverted places and also check for the return of get_tls_callchain_cursor() as it may fail and return NULL. In that unlikely case we now either print something to a file, if the caller was expecting to print a callchain, or return an error code to state that resolving the callchain isn't possible. In some cases this was made easier because thread__resolve_callchain() already can fail for other reasons, so this new one (cursor == NULL) can be added and the callers don't have to explicitely check for this new condition. Rename the fallthrough attribute to better align with the kernel version. Copy the definition from include/linux/compiler_attributes.h including the #else clause. 2020-10-14perf streams: Report hot streamsJin Yao1-0/+13
We show the streams separately. They are divided into different sections. 1. "Matched hot streams" 2. "Hot streams in old perf data only" 3. "Hot streams in new perf data only". For each stream, we report the cycles and hot percent (hits%). For example, cycles: 2, hits: 4.08% -------------------------- main div.c:42 compute_flag div.c:28 Signed-off-by: Jin Yao <yao.jin@linux.intel.com> Acked-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20201009022845.13141-7-yao.jin@linux.intel.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
2020-10-14perf streams: Calculate the sum of total streams hitsJin Yao1-0/+32
We have used callchain_node->hit to measure the hot level of one stream. This patch calculates the sum of hits of total streams. Thus in next patch, we can use following formula to report hot percent for one stream. hot percent = callchain_node->hit / sum of total hits Signed-off-by: Jin Yao <yao.jin@linux.intel.com> Acked-by: Jiri Olsa <jolsa@kernel.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20201009022845.13141-6-yao.jin@linux.intel.com Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
2020-10-14perf streams: Compare two streamsJin Yao1-0/+54
Stream is the branch history which is aggregated by the branch records from perf samples. Now we support the callchain as stream. If the callchain entries of one stream are fully matched with the callchain entries of another stream, we think two streams are matched. For example, cycles: 1, hits: 26.80% cycles: 1, hits: 27.30% ----------------------- ----------------------- main div.c:39 main div.c:39 main div.c:44 main div.c:44 Above two streams are matched (we don't consider the case that source code is changed). The matching logic is, compare the chain string first. If it's not matched, fallback to dso address comparison. 2020-05-28perf callchain: Setup callchain properly in pipe modeJiri Olsa1-0/+14
Callchains are automatically initialized by checking on event's sample_type. For pipe mode we need to put this check into attr event code. Moving the callchains setup code into callchain_param_setup function and calling it from attr event process code. This enables pipe output having callchains, like: # perf record -g -e 'raw_syscalls:sys_enter' true | perf script # perf record -g -e 'raw_syscalls:sys_enter' true | perf report Committer notes: We still need the next patch for the above output to work.
