git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull more MM updates from Andrew Morton: - "mm/rmap: index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by anonymous pgoff" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by their anonymous page offset to resolve confusion around reverse mapping for zeroed and CoW'd file-backed memory. Use this new VMA anonymous page offset tracking to eliminate index conflicts and lay the foundation for scalable CoW performance improvements. - "promote mapped executable folios after first usage for MGLRU" (Baolin Wang) Make MGLRU's protection of mapped executable file folios more reliable. Follow the classical LRU's logic, promoting mapped executable file folios after their first usage to give executable code a better chance to stay in memory and improve workload performance. - "mm: vmscan: fix node reclaim ignoring swappiness parameter" (Ridong Chen) Fix per-node proactive reclaim interface's ignoring the swappiness parameter when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled by consolidating sc_swappiness() into a single function that checks proactive_swappiness regardless of kernel configuration. - "mm/vmscan: reduce lru_lock contention via vmstat-derived scan-balance cost" (Usama Arif) Reduce lru_lock contention in the reclaim path by deriving scan-balance costs from vmstat counters rather than lock-acquired producer updates. Read and decay these cost signals on the reclaim side under a dedicated per-lruvec lock, reducing total LRU lock wait time by over 60% without impacting scan throughput. - "zram: fix zram issues reported by sashiko" (Sergey Senozhatsky) Fix two low-risk zram bugs which Sashiko spotted in drive-by review. - "Honor XA_FLAGS_ACCOUNT in xas_split_alloc() and charge to folio's memcg" (Zi Yan) Fix xas_split_alloc() by enabling target folio memcg charging during splits and adding the missing __GFP_ACCOUNT flag for proper XArray node memory accounting. - "selftests/mm: use pattern matching in .gitignore" (Pratyush Mallick) Replace hardcoded binary names in selftests/mm/.gitignore with a generic pattern-matching rule to automatically ignore generated test files and avoid manual updates when adding new tests. - "mm/page_ext: remove pgdat_page_ext_init()" (Sang-Heon Jeon) Make the incompatibility between FLATMEM and NUMA explicit in mm/Kconfig and remove the unused pgdat_page_ext_init() function. - "zram: fix zstd error paths and add parameter validation" (Haoqin Huang) Clean up zram compression backends by removing redundant error cleanup, adding parameter and dictionary validation, auto-prefixing algorithm error logs, and resetting parameters prior to reinitialization. - "zram: fix stale scan bounds after reinitialization" (Longlong Xia) Prevent out-of-bounds slot accesses during concurrent zram resets by moving table scan bound calculations under dev_lock in writeback_store() and read_block_state(). - "add anon mTHP collapse test cases" (Baolin Wang) Extend selftests helper functions to support arbitrary page orders and add new test cases and options for mTHP collapse in khugepaged. - "selftests/mm: Handle unsupported and transient test conditions" (Muhammad Usama Anjum) Update MM selftests to report a SKIP status instead of a failure when required kernel or filesystem features are unsupported, while adding retry logic for transient page migration errors. - "mm/zswap: Fixes and improves the zswap shrink" (Hao Jia) Fix the missing zswap global shrinker when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled and extend shrink_memcg() to support batch writeback for improved writeback efficiency. - "alloc_tag: introduce IOCTL-based filtering for MAP" (Suren Baghdasaryan) Introduce an IOCTL-based binary interface for memory allocation profiling that enables kernel-side filtering before per-CPU counter aggregation. This eliminates the text-parsing overhead of /proc/allocinfo and provides up to a 20x speedup by transferring only filtered allocation data to userspace. - "better block swap batching and a different take on swap_ops v5" (Christoph Hellwig) Refactor block swap I/O to use swap_iocb for batching instead of single-bio requests and rebase the swap_ops interface, achieving faster swap throughput during kernel builds. - "mm: kmemleak: reduce transient false positives by confirming leaks" (Catalin Marinas) Reduce false-positive kmemleak reports by combining two kmemleak enhancements that add a second confirmation scan and a configurable minimum unreferenced scan count module parameter. - "mm: kmemleak: default min_unref_scans to 2 for verbose kernels" (Breno Leitao) Auto-scanning kernels can generate false-positive memory leak reports on single scans, so this patch defaults min_unref_scans to 2 when CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_VERBOSE is enabled to require a second confirming scan. - "swap_ops updates" (Christoph Hellwig) Batching I/O for synchronous swap devices causes performance regressions and filesystem-based swap suffers from double-indirection overhead. This series resolves both issues by reintroducing per-folio writes for synchronous swap and allowing filesystems to directly export their own swap_ops. - "mm/khugepaged: several cleanups" (Nico Pache) khugepaged accumulated redundant state-checking patterns and outdated comments following mTHP integration. Introduce dedicated helpers for PTE validation and event counting while refreshing the internal documentation. - "maple_tree: lock checking and clean ups" (Liam Howlett) Syzbot reports incorrectly blame memory management exit paths for locking bugs, maple tree erase operations risk allocation failures without gfp flags and internal documentation lacks clarity. Improve lock error detection, update docs, fix race and allocation edge cases and optimize erase allocations using a fallback to GFP_KERNEL | GFP_NOFAIL. * tag 'mm-stable-2026-08-26-15-22' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm: (172 commits) selftests/proc: make proc-maps-race work with READ_IMPLIES_EXEC memcg: move LRU size accounting on reparenting instead of copying it mm/vmscan: fix comment logic in balance_pgdat maple_tree: add helper mas_make_walkable() maple_tree: avoid extra gap calculation maple_tree: fix argument name in header maple_tree: change two GFP flags in tests maple_tree: document erase and allocations better maple_tree: avoid mas_erase() and mtree_erase() failures maple_tree: document that erase may use GFP_KERNEL for allocations maple_tree: catch race in mas_alloc_cyclic() maple_tree: add bulk parent set helper maple_tree: micro optimisation of mas_wr_store_type() maple_tree: optimise mas_wr_node_store() when not in rcu mode maple_tree: use prefetched value in mas_wr_store_type() maple_tree: clarify comments on mas_nomem() maple_tree: drop MAPLE_ALLOC_SLOTS maple_tree: drop dead code from mas_extend_spanning_null() maple_tree: documentation fix maple_tree: add write lock checking with lockdep sequence numbers ...
2026-08-24mm/swap: add a new swap_ops.h header to allow for pluggable swap opsChristoph Hellwig1-0/+1
Add a new header to declare the swap_iocb, swap_ops and swap_ctx to allow for swap_ops implementations outside of mm/page_io.c. This will be used to remove the double indirection for file system-based swap. There is no functional change, just a move of the declarations. Note that there already is a swapops.h header, which is totally unrelated to struct swap_ops. The close naming is a bit unfortunate, but I could not think of a better name for this header. 2026-08-24mm/swap: introduce struct swap_io_ctxChristoph Hellwig1-4/+9
Generalize the context currently provided by double pointers to struct swap_iocb to an on-stack context. This cleans up the code and prepares for adding more fields and supporting batching multiple folios into a single bio for block-based swap as well. This new swap_io_ctx is required for all functions using it, the old way of allowing a NULL iocb for some callers is removed to keep the interface consistent. To reduce code duplication caused by this, a new swap_cache_read_folio_sync helper is added to consolidate the code to call swap_cache_read_folio with a local swap_io_ctx. The unpug helpers are renamed to use the submit wording as they are generalized. 2026-08-24shmem: provide a shmem_write_folio wrapperChristoph Hellwig1-1/+6
Patch series "better block swap batching and a different take on swap_ops v5". This series makes use of the swap_iocb for block as well so that it doesn't do inefficient single-bio I/O, and then rebases the swap_ops from Baoquan on top of the now very different method structure. When running doing kernels builds, which is a workload that doesn't really do much THP anonymous memory it still gets 2x clustering for writeout and 1.2x for reading back swap in. The overall times do not actually change, though. This patch (of 7): Provide a wrapper for the shmem abuses in drm to prepare for swap I/O refactoring by keeping swap_iocb handling entirely contained in mm/. 2026-08-24mm: shmem: reject page-aligned fallocate end overflowZhiling Zou1-1/+9
shmem_fallocate() validates offset + len with inode_newsize_ok(), but then rounds that end offset up to a page boundary before entering the preallocation loop. For a valid request ending at MAX_LFS_FILESIZE, such as offset = 0 and len = LLONG_MAX, adding PAGE_SIZE - 1 to the validated end can overflow the signed loff_t used for the rounded end calculation. If that wrapped value is then converted into a page index, shmem_fallocate() can enter the folio allocation loop with an invalid range. Use check_add_overflow() when calculating the page-aligned end, and fail before entering the allocation loop if the rounded end cannot be represented. "mm/damon: refactor damon_{start,stop,commit}() for simple error handling" (SJ Park) Refactor the DAMON core API functions to guarantee that all contexts are fully stopped when damon_start(), damon_stop(), or damon_commit() fail, eliminating the need for complex and error-prone caller-side cleanup code - "Keep tail page private zero at free and folio split" (Zi Yan) Add checks to ensure tail_page->private is zero when freeing compound or high-order pages and when promoting tail pages during large folio splits. By validating these fields at free and split time, it allows the removal of redundant private field clearing inside prep_compound_tail() - "mm: drop redundant lru_add_drain in anon folio reuse paths" (Barry Song) Eliminate redundant lru_add_drain() calls in wp_can_reuse_anon_folio() and do_swap_page() to reduce LRU lock contention and system overhead By validating folio refcounts against the LRU cache before draining and removing unnecessary drains in the swap path, it achieves up to a 30.5% reduction in drain calls during heavy swap workloads - "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations" (Jianyue Wu) Reorganize folio LRU and swap code by relocating page-cluster state to mm/swap_state.c, renaming mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c, and moving MM-internal reclaim declarations into mm/internal.h. - "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest memory" (Kiryl Shutsemau) Add userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of VM guest memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and reclaim cold ones to tiered or remote storage - "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 2)" (David Hildenbrand) Remove the remaining pieces of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE, performing some smaller cleanups around freeing of reserved vmemmap pages on the way. - "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter commits" (SJ Park) Ensure that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter is properly updated when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime, matching the behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and renames existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to maintain measurement accuracy. - "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm" (xu xin) Resolve a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck where thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended lock contention. By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap walk, it reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms down to under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes under memory pressure. - "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h" (Mike Rapoport) Split declarations related to mm_init, memblock, vmalloc and sparse into new headers - "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()" (xu xin) Apply the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm() to collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during KSM memory error handling. It hoists loop-invariant address initialization and restricts the anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to a targeted page offset range, reducing redundant checks and improving lookup efficiency. - "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and KSM tests" (Sayali Patil) Fix issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM selftest categories that can report failures when the prerequisites for the tests are not satisfied - "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only monitoring" (SJ Park) Introduce attribute-weighted region management in DAMON, allowing users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as page sizes or cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring. By assigning weights to attribute probes, DAMON can completely disable access tracking and adjust monitoring regions based on weighted probe-hit counters to optimize monitoring quality for attribute-focused workloads. - "mm/hmm: Add mmap lock-drop support for userfaultfd-backed mappings" (Stanislav Kinsburskii) Extend hmm_range_fault() to support userfaultfd-backed regions by allowing the mmap lock to be dropped during fault handling via a new hmm_range_fault_locked() helper. By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd regions while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers. - "mm: make VMA page offset handling more consistent" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(), vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their functionality. These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd folios. - "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif) Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries created during HMM migrations It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock() properly recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present THP or a standard migration entry. - "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" (Dev Jain) Refactor try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb, anonymous-lazyfree, and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated functions, laying the structural groundwork for batched anonymous large folio unmapping. - "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and additions" (Song Hu) Fix typos and fills in missing entries in the DAMON sysfs ABI document - "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs" (Gregory Price) Introduce an atomic sysfs state attribute and supporting DAX/MM infrastructure to prevent userland races when offlining and removing entire memory regions By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward compatibility. - "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Continue transitioning the kernel from the deprecated vm_flags_t type to vma_flags_t across core memory management infrastructure. It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(), unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like mlock, mprotect, and mremap. - "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin) Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions. - "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park) Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access from outer layers. It enforces encapsulation across core structures including damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct members. - "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races" (SJ Park) Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race conditions identified in DAMON It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races. - "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan Jackman) Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks via non-PCP or isolated migration paths. It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory hotplug or large allocation frees. - "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan Jackman) Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and debug assertions. It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths. - "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity. It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO, eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no functional changes intended. - "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive reclaim" (Ridong Chen) Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across memory reclaim paths It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim(). - "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang) Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP pages as non-resident. - "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau) Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API - "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation bugs" (SJ Park) Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by Sashiko. It initializes the damos->last_applied field to prevent occasional efficiency degradation and fixes invalid memory accesses in DAMON KUnit tests during test failure handling. - "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" (Jinjiang Tu) Clean up and refactor stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags without altering functionality. It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*() helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling. - "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" (Dev Jain) Extend batched folio unmapping support to file folios within userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching capabilities to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed(). 2026-08-06mm/shmem: downgrade final i_blocks check in shmem_evict_inode() to pr_warn()Jiacheng Yu1-1/+4
shmem_evict_inode() ends with WARN_ON(inode->i_blocks) as a final consistency check of shmem's block accounting. When it fires, the inode-local counters die with the inode; what may linger is a small residue in accounting kept outside the inode, such as per-mount or per-user charges. No data is lost, and no corruption follows. On kernels running with panic_on_warn=1, this accounting inconsistency escalates to a full machine panic, which is disproportionate to the impact. Downgrade the WARN_ON() to a pr_warn() that reports the inode together with its accounting counters (i_blocks, alloced, swapped, nrpages), keeping the inconsistency visible in the logs. The accounting bugs this check has caught over the years -- the swapout race described in commit 0f3c42f522dc ("tmpfs: change final i_blocks BUG to WARNING") and the error recovery race fixed in commit 267a4c76bbdb ("tmpfs: fix shmem_evict_inode() warnings on i_blocks") -- are real and should still be fixed; this change only removes the disproportionate escalation. One way to hit this race: soft_offline_in_use_page()'s fast path drops a clean, unmapped shmem folio via mapping_evict_folio(), where the xas_store() and the nrpages decrement are not atomic against a concurrent shmem_evict_inode(); the final shmem_recalc_inode() can then read the pre-decrement nrpages, compute freed = 0, and leave one page charged. Same class as the races in 0f3c42f522dc and 267a4c76bbdb, this time in the under-count direction; reproduced on 7.2-rc4 with madvise(MADV_SOFT_OFFLINE) racing MAP_FIXED replacement of a shared-anonymous VMA. 2026-08-04mm/vma: use vma_start_pgoff(), linear_page_index() in mm codeLorenzo Stoakes1-4/+5
There are many instances in which linear_page_index() (as well as linear_page_delta()) is open-coded, which is confusing and inconsistent. Additionally, vma->vm_pgoff doesn't necessarily make it clear that this is the page offset of the start of the VMA range. Doing so also aids greppability. So use vma_start_pgoff() in favour of directly accessing vma->vm_pgoff, and linear_page_index() where we can. This also lays the ground for future changes which will add an anonymous page offset in order to be able to index MAP_PRIVATE-file backed anon folios in terms of their virtual page offset. 2026-07-31Remove excl arg to ->create inode_operationNeilBrown1-1/+1
The only time that 'false' is passed as the 'excl' arg to the ->create inode_operation is in lookup_open() when ->atomic_open is not provided by the parent directory. *all* directory inode_operations which do not have ->atomic_open completely ignore the 'excl' arg. 2026-07-23fs: push nr_cached_objects memcg gating into individual filesystemsUsama Arif1-0/+10
Commit 0baad6f9b997 ("fs/super: skip non-memcg-aware nr_cached_objects in memcg slab shrink") added a check in fs/super.c that skipped every ->nr_cached_objects() hook whenever the shrinker was invoked for a non-root memcg, on the assumption that none of them honour sc->memcg. That assumption is wrong for XFS, whose inode-reclaim hook is intentionally driven from per-memcg contexts to free memcg-charged slab. Encoding a blanket "never memcg-aware" policy in fs/super.c short-circuits that path. Push the check down into the callbacks whose counters really are irrelevant to per-memcg reclaim - btrfs_nr_cached_objects() and shmem_unused_huge_count() - and drop the fs/super.c gate. Each filesystem can now lift the restriction independently if its counter later grows memcg awareness, without touching fs/super.c. Introduce mem_cgroup_shrink_is_root() in <linux/memcontrol.h> so the callbacks don't open-code "sc->memcg is NULL or root". 2026-06-06simpe_xattr: use per-sb cacheMiklos Szeredi1-4/+9
Move the hash table to the super block to remove excessive overhead in case of small number of xattrs per inode. Add linked list to the inode, used for listxattr and eviction. Listxattr uses rcu protection to iterate the list of xattrs. Before being made per-sb, lazy allocation was protected by inode lock. Now inode lock no longer provides sufficient exclusion, so use cmpxchg() to ensure atomicity. Though I haven't found a description of this pattern, after some research it seems that cmpxchg_release() and READ_ONCE() should provide the necessary memory barriers. Use simple_xattr_free_rcu() in simple_xattrs_free(). This is needed because the hash table is now shared between inodes and lookup on a different inode might be running the compare function on the just freed element within the RCU grace period. Following stats are based on slabinfo diff, after creating 100k empty files, then adding a "user.test=foo" xattr to each: v7.0 (no rhashtable): File creation: 993.40 bytes/file Xattr addition: 79.99 bytes/file v7.1-rc2 (per-inode rhashtable): File creation: 939.73 bytes/file Xattr addition: 1296.08 bytes/file v7.1-rc2 + this patch (per-sb rhashtable) File creation: 946.84 bytes/file Xattr addition: 111.86 bytes/file The overhead of a single xattr is reduced to nearly v7.0 levels. The per xattr overhead is slightly larger due to the addition of three pointers to struct simple_xattr. 2026-06-06simple_xattr: change interface to pass struct simple_xattrs **Miklos Szeredi1-24/+10
Change the simple_xattr API to accept pointer-to-pointer (struct simple_xattrs **) instead of pointer. This allows the functions to handle lazy allocation internally without requiring callers to use simple_xattrs_lazy_alloc(). The simple_xattr_set(), simple_xattr_set_limited() and simple_xattr_add() functions now handle allocation when xattrs is NULL. simple_xattrs_free() now also frees the xattrs structure itself and sets the pointer to NULL. This simplifies callers and removes the need for most callers to explicitly manage xattrs allocation and lifetime. In shmem_initxattrs(), the total required space for all initial xattrs (ispace) is pre-calculated and deducted from sbinfo->free_ispace. Since this patch modifies the function to add new xattrs directly to the inode's &info->xattrs list rather than using a local temporary variable, a failure means that the partially populated info->xattrs list remains attached to the inode. When the VFS caller handles the -ENOMEM error, it drops the newly created inode via iput(), shmem_free_inode() adds freed to sbinfo->free_ispace a second time, permanently inflating the tmpfs free space quota. Fix by substracting already added xattrs from ispace. 2026-06-04mm: shmem: refactor thpsize_shmem_enabled_store() with sysfs_match_string()Ran Xiaokai1-46/+59
Patch series "refactors thpsize_shmem_enabled_store() and thpsize_shmem_enabled_show()", v4. This patch (of 2): Inspired by commit 82d9ff648c6c ("mm: huge_memory: refactor anon_enabled_store() with set_anon_enabled_mode()"), refactor thpsize_shmem_enabled_store() using sysfs_match_string(). This eliminates the duplicated spin_lock/unlock(), set/clear_bit(), calls across all branches, reducing code duplication. Behavioral change: Call start_stop_khugepaged() only when the mode actually changes. If unchanged, call set_recommended_min_free_kbytes() to preserve legacy watermark behavior. This avoids unnecessary khugepaged restarts. Tested with selftests ./run_kselftest.sh -t mm:ksft_thp.sh, all test cases passed. 2026-06-02mm, swap: unify large folio allocationKairui Song1-68/+32
Now that direct large order allocation is supported in the swap cache, both anon and shmem can use it instead of implementing their own methods. This unifies the fallback and swap cache check, which also reduces the TOCTOU race window of swap cache state: previously, high order swapin required checking swap cache states first, then allocating and falling back separately. Now all these steps happen in the same compact loop. Order fallback and statistics are also unified, callers just need to check and pass the acceptable order bitmask. There is basically no behavior change. This only makes things more unified and prepares for later commits. Cgroup and zero map checks can also be moved into the compact loop, further reducing race windows and redundancy Link: https://lore.kernel.org/20260517-swap-table-p4-v5-5-88ae43e064c7@tencent.com Signed-off-by: Kairui Song <kasong@tencent.com> Cc: Baolin Wang <baolin.wang@linux.alibaba.com> Cc: Baoquan He <bhe@redhat.com> Cc: Barry Song <baohua@kernel.org> Cc: Chengming Zhou <chengming.zhou@linux.dev> Cc: Chris Li <chrisl@kernel.org> Cc: David Hildenbrand <david@kernel.org> Cc: Hugh Dickins <hughd@google.com> Cc: Johannes Weiner <hannes@cmpxchg.org> Cc: Kemeng Shi <shikemeng@huaweicloud.com> Cc: Lorenzo Stoakes <ljs@kernel.org> Cc: Muchun Song <muchun.song@linux.dev> Cc: Nhat Pham <nphamcs@gmail.com> Cc: Roman Gushchin <roman.gushchin@linux.dev> Cc: Shakeel Butt <shakeel.butt@linux.dev> Cc: Youngjun Park <youngjun.park@lge.com> Cc: Zi Yan <ziy@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org>
2026-06-02mm/huge_memory: move THP gfp limit helper into headerKairui Song1-27/+3
Shmem has some special requirements for THP GFP and has to limit it in certain zones or provide a more lenient fallback. We'll use this helper for generic swap THP allocation, which needs to support shmem. For a typical GFP_HIGHUSER_MOVABLE swap-in, this helper is basically a no-op. But it's necessary for certain shmem users, mostly drivers. No feature change. 2026-05-28Revert "tmpfs: don't enable large folios if not supported"Baolin Wang1-4/+1
This reverts commit 5a90c155defa684f3a21f68c3f8e40c056e6114c. Currently, when shmem mounts are initialized, they only use 'sbinfo->huge' to determine whether the shmem mount supports large folios. However, for anonymous shmem, whether it supports large folios can be dynamically configured via sysfs interfaces, so setting or not setting mapping_set_large_folios() during initialization cannot accurately reflect whether anonymous shmem actually supports large folios, which has already caused some confusion[1]. Moreover, for tmpfs mounts, relying on 'sbinfo->huge' cannot keep the mapping_set_large_folios() setting consistent across all mappings in the entire tmpfs mount. In other words, under the same tmpfs mount, after remount, we might end up with some mappings supporting large folios (calling mapping_set_large_folios()) while others don't. After some investigation, I found that the write performance regression addressed by commit 5a90c155defa has already been fixed by the following commit 665575cff098b ("filemap: move prefaulting out of hot write path"). See the following test data: Base: dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=400K count=10485 (3.2 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=800K count=5242 (3.2 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=1600K count=2621 (3.1 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=2200K count=1906 (3.0 GB/s ) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=3000K count=1398 (3.0 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=4500K count=932 (3.1 GB/s) Base + revert 5a90c155defa: dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=400K count=10485 (3.3 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=800K count=5242 (3.3 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=1600K count=2621 (3.2 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=2200K count=1906 (3.1 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/testbs=3000K count=1398 (3.0 GB/s) dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/tmpfs/test bs=4500K count=932 (3.1 GB/s) The data is basically consistent with minor fluctuation noise. So we can now safely revert commit 5a90c155defa to set mapping_set_large_folios() for all shmem mounts unconditionally. 2026-04-18shmem, userfaultfd: implement shmem uffd operations using vm_uffd_opsMike Rapoport (Microsoft)1-93/+51

Implement these methods in shmem along with vm_uffd_ops->alloc_folio() and drop shmem_mfill_atomic_pte(). Since userfaultfd now does not reference any functions from shmem, drop include if linux/shmem_fs.h from mm/userfaultfd.c mfill_atomic_install_pte() is not used anywhere outside of mm/userfaultfd, make it static. 2026-04-18shmem, userfaultfd: use a VMA callback to handle UFFDIO_CONTINUEMike Rapoport (Microsoft)1-1/+14
When userspace resolves a page fault in a shmem VMA with UFFDIO_CONTINUE it needs to get a folio that already exists in the pagecache backing that VMA. Instead of using shmem_get_folio() for that, add a get_folio_noalloc() method to 'struct vm_uffd_ops' that will return a folio if it exists in the VMA's pagecache at given pgoff. Implement get_folio_noalloc() method for shmem and slightly refactor userfaultfd's mfill_get_vma() and mfill_atomic_pte_continue() to support this new API. 2026-04-18userfaultfd: introduce vm_uffd_opsMike Rapoport (Microsoft)1-0/+15
Current userfaultfd implementation works only with memory managed by core MM: anonymous, shmem and hugetlb. First, there is no fundamental reason to limit userfaultfd support only to the core memory types and userfaults can be handled similarly to regular page faults provided a VMA owner implements appropriate callbacks. Second, historically various code paths were conditioned on vma_is_anonymous(), vma_is_shmem() and is_vm_hugetlb_page() and some of these conditions can be expressed as operations implemented by a particular memory type. Introduce vm_uffd_ops extension to vm_operations_struct that will delegate memory type specific operations to a VMA owner. Operations for anonymous memory are handled internally in userfaultfd using anon_uffd_ops that implicitly assigned to anonymous VMAs. Start with a single operation, ->can_userfault() that will verify that a VMA meets requirements for userfaultfd support at registration time. Implement that method for anonymous, shmem and hugetlb and move relevant parts of vma_can_userfault() into the new callbacks. Some places in the kernel already use this check, so lets create a simple helper function to keep the code clean and readable. 2026-04-05mm: reintroduce vma_flags_test() as a singular flag testLorenzo Stoakes (Oracle)1-2/+2
Since we've now renamed vma_flags_test() to vma_flags_test_any() to be very clear as to what we are in fact testing, we now have the opportunity to bring vma_flags_test() back, but for explicitly testing a single VMA flag. This is useful, as often flag tests are against a single flag, and vma_flags_test_any(flags, VMA_READ_BIT) reads oddly and potentially causes confusion. We use sparse to enforce that users won't accidentally pass vm_flags_t to this function without it being flagged so this should make it harder to get this wrong. Of course, passing vma_flags_t to the function is impossible, as it is a struct. Also update the VMA tests to reflect this change. 2026-04-05mm: rename VMA flag helpers to be more readableLorenzo Stoakes (Oracle)1-2/+2
Patch series "mm: vma flag tweaks". The ongoing work around introducing non-system word VMA flags has introduced a number of helper functions and macros to make life easier when working with these flags and to make conversions from the legacy use of VM_xxx flags more straightforward. This series improves these to reduce confusion as to what they do and to improve consistency and readability. Firstly the series renames vma_flags_test() to vma_flags_test_any() to make it abundantly clear that this function tests whether any of the flags are set (as opposed to vma_flags_test_all()). It then renames vma_desc_test_flags() to vma_desc_test_any() for the same reason. Note that we drop the 'flags' suffix here, as vma_desc_test_any_flags() would be cumbersome and 'test' implies a flag test. Similarly, we rename vma_test_all_flags() to vma_test_all() for consistency. Next, we have a couple of instances (erofs, zonefs) where we are now testing for vma_desc_test_any(desc, VMA_SHARED_BIT) && vma_desc_test_any(desc, VMA_MAYWRITE_BIT). This is silly, so this series introduces vma_desc_test_all() so these callers can instead invoke vma_desc_test_all(desc, VMA_SHARED_BIT, VMA_MAYWRITE_BIT). We then observe that quite a few instances of vma_flags_test_any() and vma_desc_test_any() are in fact only testing against a single flag. Using the _any() variant here is just confusing - 'any' of single item reads strangely and is liable to cause confusion. So in these instances the series reintroduces vma_flags_test() and vma_desc_test() as helpers which test against a single flag. The fact that vma_flags_t is a struct and that vma_flag_t utilises sparse to avoid confusion with vm_flags_t makes it impossible for a user to misuse these helpers without it getting flagged somewhere. The series also updates __mk_vma_flags() and functions invoked by it to explicitly mark them always inline to match expectation and to be consistent with other VMA flag helpers. It also renames vma_flag_set() to vma_flags_set_flag() (a function only used by __mk_vma_flags()) to be consistent with other VMA flag helpers. Finally it updates the VMA tests for each of these changes, and introduces explicit tests for vma_flags_test() and vma_desc_test() to assert that they behave as expected. This patch (of 6): On reflection, it's confusing to have vma_flags_test() and vma_desc_test_flags() test whether any comma-separated VMA flag bit is set, while also having vma_flags_test_all() and vma_test_all_flags() separately test whether all flags are set. Firstly, rename vma_flags_test() to vma_flags_test_any() to eliminate this confusion. Secondly, since the VMA descriptor flag functions are becoming rather cumbersome, prefer vma_desc_test*() to vma_desc_test_flags*(), and also rename vma_desc_test_flags() to vma_desc_test_any(). Finally, rename vma_test_all_flags() to vma_test_all() to keep the VMA-specific helper consistent with the VMA descriptor naming convention and to help avoid confusion vs. vma_flags_test_all(). While we're here, also update whitespace to be consistent in helper functions. 2026-02-23shmem: adapt to rhashtable-based simple_xattrs with lazy allocationChristian Brauner1-13/+31
Adapt tmpfs/shmem to use the rhashtable-based xattr path and switch from an embedded struct to pointer-based lazy allocation. Change shmem_inode_info.xattrs from embedded 'struct simple_xattrs' to a pointer 'struct simple_xattrs *', initialized to NULL. This avoids the rhashtable overhead for every tmpfs inode, which helps when a lot of inodes exist. The xattr store is allocated on first use: - shmem_initxattrs(): Allocates via simple_xattrs_alloc() when security modules set initial xattrs during inode creation. - shmem_xattr_handler_set(): Allocates on first setxattr, with a short-circuit for removal when no xattrs are stored yet. All read paths (shmem_xattr_handler_get, shmem_listxattr) check for NULL xattrs pointer and return -ENODATA or 0 respectively. Replaced xattr entries are freed via simple_xattr_free_rcu() to allow concurrent RCU readers to finish. shmem_evict_inode() conditionally frees the xattr store only when allocated. Also change simple_xattr_add() from void to int to propagate rhashtable insertion failures. shmem_initxattrs() is the only caller. 2026-02-23xattr: add rhashtable-based simple_xattr infrastructureChristian Brauner1-1/+1
Add rhashtable support to the simple_xattr subsystem while keeping the existing rbtree code fully functional. This allows consumers to be migrated one at a time without breaking any intermediate build. struct simple_xattrs gains a dispatch flag and a union holding either the rbtree (rb_root + rwlock) or rhashtable state: struct simple_xattrs { bool use_rhashtable; union { struct { struct rb_root rb_root; rwlock_t lock; }; struct rhashtable ht; }; }; simple_xattrs_init() continues to set up the rbtree path for existing embedded-struct callers. Add simple_xattrs_alloc() which dynamically allocates a simple_xattrs and initializes the rhashtable path. This is the entry point for consumers switching to pointer-based lazy allocation. The five core functions (get, set, list, add, free) dispatch based on the use_rhashtable flag. Existing callers continue to use the rbtree path unchanged. As each consumer is converted it will switch to simple_xattrs_alloc() and the rhashtable path. Once all consumers are converted a follow-up patch will remove the rbtree code. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds1-1/+1
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2026-02-02mm, shmem: prevent infinite loop on truncate raceKairui Song1-9/+14
When truncating a large swap entry, shmem_free_swap() returns 0 when the entry's index doesn't match the given index due to lookup alignment. The failure fallback path checks if the entry crosses the end border and aborts when it happens, so truncate won't erase an unexpected entry or range. But one scenario was ignored. When `index` points to the middle of a large swap entry, and the large swap entry doesn't go across the end border, find_get_entries() will return that large swap entry as the first item in the batch with `indices[0]` equal to `index`. The entry's base index will be smaller than `indices[0]`, so shmem_free_swap() will fail and return 0 due to the "base < index" check. The code will then call shmem_confirm_swap(), get the order, check if it crosses the END boundary (which it doesn't), and retry with the same index. The next iteration will find the same entry again at the same index with same indices, leading to an infinite loop. Fix this by retrying with a round-down index, and abort if the index is smaller than the truncate range. 2026-01-31mm, swap: cleanup swap entry management workflowKairui Song1-5/+5
The current swap entry allocation/freeing workflow has never had a clear definition. This makes it hard to debug or add new optimizations. This commit introduces a proper definition of how swap entries would be allocated and freed. Now, most operations are folio based, so they will never exceed one swap cluster, and we now have a cleaner border between swap and the rest of mm, making it much easier to follow and debug, especially with new added sanity checks. Also making more optimization possible. Swap entry will be mostly freed and free with a folio bound. The folio lock will be useful for resolving many swap related races. Now swap allocation (except hibernation) always starts with a folio in the swap cache, and gets duped/freed protected by the folio lock: - folio_alloc_swap() - The only allocation entry point now. Context: The folio must be locked. This allocates one or a set of continuous swap slots for a folio and binds them to the folio by adding the folio to the swap cache. The swap slots' swap count start with zero value. - folio_dup_swap() - Increase the swap count of one or more entries. Context: The folio must be locked and in the swap cache. For now, the caller still has to lock the new swap entry owner (e.g., PTL). This increases the ref count of swap entries allocated to a folio. Newly allocated swap slots' count has to be increased by this helper as the folio got unmapped (and swap entries got installed). - folio_put_swap() - Decrease the swap count of one or more entries. Context: The folio must be locked and in the swap cache. For now, the caller still has to lock the new swap entry owner (e.g., PTL). This decreases the ref count of swap entries allocated to a folio. Typically, swapin will decrease the swap count as the folio got installed back and the swap entry got uninstalled This won't remove the folio from the swap cache and free the slot. Lazy freeing of swap cache is helpful for reducing IO. There is already a folio_free_swap() for immediate cache reclaim. This part could be further optimized later. The above locking constraints could be further relaxed when the swap table is fully implemented. Currently dup still needs the caller to lock the swap entry container (e.g. PTL), or a concurrent zap may underflow the swap count. Some swap users need to interact with swap count without involving folio (e.g. forking/zapping the page table or mapping truncate without swapin). In such cases, the caller has to ensure there is no race condition on whatever owns the swap count and use the below helpers: - swap_put_entries_direct() - Decrease the swap count directly. Context: The caller must lock whatever is referencing the slots to avoid a race. Typically the page table zapping or shmem mapping truncate will need to free swap slots directly. If a slot is cached (has a folio bound), this will also try to release the swap cache. - swap_dup_entry_direct() - Increase the swap count directly. Context: The caller must lock whatever is referencing the entries to avoid race, and the entries must already have a swap count > 1. Typically, forking will need to copy the page table and hence needs to increase the swap count of the entries in the table. The page table is locked while referencing the swap entries, so the entries all have a swap count > 1 and can't be freed. Hibernation subsystem is a bit different, so two special wrappers are here: - swap_alloc_hibernation_slot() - Allocate one entry from one device. - swap_free_hibernation_slot() - Free one entry allocated by the above helper. All hibernation entries are exclusive to the hibernation subsystem and should not interact with ordinary swap routines. By separating the workflows, it will be possible to bind folio more tightly with swap cache and get rid of the SWAP_HAS_CACHE as a temporary pin. 2026-01-31mm/shmem, swap: remove SWAP_MAP_SHMEMNhat Pham1-1/+1
The SWAP_MAP_SHMEM state was introduced in the commit aaa468653b4a ("swap_info: note SWAP_MAP_SHMEM"), to quickly determine if a swap entry belongs to shmem during swapoff. However, swapoff has since been rewritten in the commit b56a2d8af914 ("mm: rid swapoff of quadratic complexity"). Now having swap count == SWAP_MAP_SHMEM value is basically the same as having swap count == 1, and swap_shmem_alloc() behaves analogously to swap_duplicate(). The only difference of note is that swap_shmem_alloc() does not check for -ENOMEM returned from __swap_duplicate(), but it is OK because shmem never re-duplicates any swap entry it owns. This will stil be safe if we use (batched) swap_duplicate() instead. This commit adds swap_duplicate_nr(), the batched variant of swap_duplicate(), and removes the SWAP_MAP_SHMEM state and the associated swap_shmem_alloc() helper to simplify the state machine (both mentally and in terms of actual code). We will also have an extra state/special value that can be repurposed (for swap entries that never gets re-duplicated). 2026-01-31mm/shmem: never bypass the swap cache for SWP_SYNCHRONOUS_IOKairui Song1-47/+18
Now the overhead of the swap cache is trivial to none, bypassing the swap cache is no longer a good optimization. We have removed the cache bypass swapin for anon memory, now do the same for shmem. Many helpers and functions can be dropped now. The performance may slightly drop because of the co-existence and double update of swap_map and swap table, and this problem will be improved very soon in later commits by dropping the swap_map update partially: Swapin of 24 GB file with tmpfs with transparent_hugepage_tmpfs=within_size and ZRAM, 3 test runs on my machine: Before: After this commit: After this series: 5.99s 6.29s 6.08s And later swap table phases will drop the swap_map completely to avoid overhead and reduce memory usage. 2026-01-26mm/shmem, swap: fix race of truncate and swap entry splitKairui Song1-11/+34
The helper for shmem swap freeing is not handling the order of swap entries correctly. It uses xa_cmpxchg_irq to erase the swap entry, but it gets the entry order before that using xa_get_order without lock protection, and it may get an outdated order value if the entry is split or changed in other ways after the xa_get_order and before the xa_cmpxchg_irq. And besides, the order could grow and be larger than expected, and cause truncation to erase data beyond the end border. For example, if the target entry and following entries are swapped in or freed, then a large folio was added in place and swapped out, using the same entry, the xa_cmpxchg_irq will still succeed, it's very unlikely to happen though. To fix that, open code the Xarray cmpxchg and put the order retrieval and value checking in the same critical section. Also, ensure the order won't exceed the end border, skip it if the entry goes across the border. Skipping large swap entries crosses the end border is safe here. Shmem truncate iterates the range twice, in the first iteration, find_lock_entries already filtered such entries, and shmem will swapin the entries that cross the end border and partially truncate the folio (split the folio or at least zero part of it). So in the second loop here, if we see a swap entry that crosses the end order, it must at least have its content erased already. I observed random swapoff hangs and kernel panics when stress testing ZSWAP with shmem. After applying this patch, all problems are gone. 2026-01-20mm/shmem: add mTHP swpout fallback statistics in shmem_writeout()Weilin Tong1-0/+12
Currently, when shmem mTHPs are split and swapped out via shmem_writeout(), there are no unified statistics to trace these mTHP swpout fallback events. This makes it difficult to analyze the prevalence of mTHP splitting and fallback during swap operations, which is important for memory diagnostics. Here we add statistics counting for mTHP fallback to small pages when splitting and swapping out in shmem_writeout().
