rds_conn_shutdown() quiesces the transmit and receive-refill paths by
waiting for RDS_IN_XMIT and RDS_RECV_REFILL to be sampled clear, and
then runs the transport shutdown and rds_conn_path_reset(). Sampling
the bits clear is not the same as owning them: the moment after the
wait_event() returns, rds_send_xmit() can re-acquire RDS_IN_XMIT (or
rds_ib_recv_refill() can re-acquire RDS_RECV_REFILL) and run
concurrently with the teardown.
The sender does recheck the connection state after taking the lock,
but that recheck is a classic store-buffering pattern: teardown writes
the state and reads the bit while the sender writes the bit and reads
the state. acquire_in_xmit() is only an acquire operation, so on
weakly ordered architectures both sides can miss each other's write,
and the transmit path then runs while the transport zeroes its rings
(e.g. rds_ib_ring_init()) and rds_send_path_reset() rewrites the
transmit state under it.
Oracle UEK fixed the same class of crashes - a 14-year tail of
BUG_ON()s in rds_ib_sub_signaled(), unexpected op-codes and NULL
dereferences in rds_ib_send_cqe_handler() during failover testing -
by making the teardown path *acquire* the fastpath bit locks instead
of testing them ("rds: Make sure transmit path and connection
tear-down does not run concurrently"). Ownership of a single word is
decided by RMW atomicity, so no cross-variable ordering is needed.
Do the same here: take both locks before calling the transport
shutdown, hold them across rds_conn_path_reset(), and release them
explicitly with a wake-up afterwards. Both are released with
clear_bit_unlock(), so that the ring re-initialization done by the
transport shutdown and the transmit state rewritten by
rds_send_path_reset() are ordered before either bit is seen clear by
the next acquire_in_xmit() or acquire_refill().
The fastpath users of these bits - rds_send_xmit() and
rds_ib_recv_refill() - are trylock style and back off while teardown
owns the locks, so no new lock dependency is introduced for them.
rds_tcp_reset_callbacks() is different: since the previous patch it
acquires RDS_IN_XMIT as well, and it blocks doing so, so its wait now
spans the teardown instead of at most one send batch. That waiter
runs from rds_tcp_accept_one() on the single-threaded krdsd workqueue
and holds rds_tcp_accept_lock and t_conn_path_lock while it waits, so
a duelling SYN accepted while its path is being torn down parks
accept processing for the duration of the teardown - for TCP bounded
by the (up to 5 s) drain loop in rds_tcp_conn_path_shutdown(). An IB
path's drain in rds_ib_conn_path_shutdown() has no round cap, but no
blocking waiter either: rds_tcp_reset_callbacks() is the only blocking
acquirer of these bits and waits only on its own TCP path, and the
fastpaths are trylock-and-back-off on both transports, so a long IB
drain lengthens only that path's own quiesce. The
window is narrow: the accept-side state check has to pass before the
teardown moves the path to RDS_CONN_DISCONNECTING.
Because krdsd is a single global workqueue, everything else queued
there - accept processing for other connections and network
namespaces, and the flush_workqueue(rds_wq) in rds_tcp_listen_stop()
during namespace teardown - waits behind the parked accept worker for
that time. It cannot deadlock, although the waits do point at each
other: the teardown blocks until the bit's holder releases it, and
the holder may be that krdsd accept worker. The holder finishes
without needing anything the teardown owns: the sync cancels
rds_tcp_reset_callbacks() issues target cp_send_w and cp_recv_w on
the path's ordered cp_wq, whose only execution slot is occupied by
the blocked cp_down_w itself, so they are pending at most and cancel
without flushing - a reliance on cp_wq being ordered that is now
noted next to those cancels (on the allocation-failure fallback where
a path shares rds_wq, the work items simply serialize).
Nor is the blocking wait itself new: rds_tcp_reset_callbacks() has
waited on RDS_IN_XMIT from the krdsd work item since
commit 335b48d980f6 ("RDS: TCP: Add/use rds_tcp_reset_callbacks to
reset tcp socket safely"); this patch stretches its worst case from
a sender's batch to the teardown's drain. The alternative to parking
is the accept path racing the teardown, which is what these patches
close; making the teardown itself non-blocking is a separate item.
One observable side effect: the SENDING flag reported by rds-info has
always mirrored RDS_IN_XMIT, so it now also covers the window where
teardown owns the bit.
The comments that describe the old sample-based handshake or name
rds_send_xmit() as the only other holder of these bits - in
rds_send_xmit(), above rds_conn_path_reset(), in rds_ib_recv_refill()
and in rds_tcp_reset_callbacks() - are updated to match.
For anyone backporting this patch standalone: it depends on
"net/rds: clear cp_flags bits individually in rds_conn_path_reset()"
and "net/rds: acquire RDS_IN_XMIT in rds_tcp_reset_callbacks()"
earlier in this series. Without the former, the blanket cp_flags
clear in rds_conn_path_reset() would drop both held bits in the middle
of the teardown; without the latter, rds_tcp_reset_callbacks() would
still sample t_sock without owning RDS_IN_XMIT. "net/rds: use
clear_bit_unlock() in release_refill()" is needed for the refill
side's release to pair with the acquire added here, and the follow-up
"net/rds: don't let rds_conn_shutdown() consume a concurrent drop"
completes the teardown-state handling for the waiter this patch
parks; a backport should carry all four.

release_in_xmit() clears RDS_IN_XMIT with clear_bit_unlock() and then
checks waitqueue_active() to decide whether anyone needs waking.
clear_bit_unlock() is only a release operation: it orders the
critical section before the bit clear, but does not order the
subsequent plain load of the wait queue head after it. The waiter
side does the mirror image - it adds itself to the wait queue and
then tests the bit. That is the classic store-buffering pattern: the
releasing CPU can read the wait queue as empty while the waiting CPU
still reads the bit as set, so the sleeper is never woken.
The waiters are rds_conn_shutdown() and rds_tcp_reset_callbacks(),
both in uninterruptible wait_event() with no timeout. A lost wake-up
strands the shutdown worker on its single-threaded workqueue until
some other sender releases the bit again - and on a connection that
is being torn down precisely because it failed, there may never be
another sender.
The barrier used to be there: release_in_xmit() did clear_bit()
followed by smp_mb__after_atomic() until commit 1422f28826d2 ("rds:
introduce acquire/release ordering in acquire/release_in_xmit()")
folded both into clear_bit_unlock(), which strengthened the lock
hand-off but silently dropped the full barrier the wake-up check
depends on. The refill counterpart, release_refill() in
net/rds/ib_recv.c, still carries its smp_mb__after_atomic() for
exactly this reason.
Use wq_has_sleeper(), which is waitqueue_active() preceded by the
required full barrier.

The to_be_dropped list is declared once at the top of rds_send_xmit()
but the function can loop via "goto restart" after each batch. The
code currently relies on rds_send_remove_from_sock() having emptied
the list entry by entry (via list_del_init()) at the end of the
previous batch; nothing in rds_send_xmit() itself guarantees the list
head is empty when a new batch starts.
Re-initialize the list on every restart, and warn once if it is ever
found non-empty there: entries left on the list at that point would
keep their message reference, their RDS_MSG_ON_SOCK accounting and
their pending RDS_RDMA_DROPPED notification, so a silent re-init
would orphan them. This is hardening: no user-visible bug is known
in the current code.

When rds_send_xmit() picks the next message off cp_send_queue it takes
its own reference with rds_message_addref(). If the message then hits
the never-retransmit check (RDS_MSG_FLUSH, or an RDMA op that was
already retransmitted), it is moved to the local to_be_dropped list and
that reference is dropped after the batch.
However, if RDS_MSG_ON_CONN has already been cleared, the message is
not added to to_be_dropped and the reference taken above is never
dropped: cp_xmit_rm has not been set at this point, so the loop simply
abandons rm and the rds_message (and everything it pins: pages, MRs,
notifiers) leaks after an RDMA error.
The only other places that clear RDS_MSG_ON_CONN are
rds_send_path_drop_acked() and rds_send_drop_to(), and both can run
while rds_send_xmit() has dropped cp_lock between moving the message
to cp_retrans and re-taking the lock in the never-retransmit check:
rds_send_path_drop_acked() can ack away a message that already sat on
cp_retrans - the RDS_MSG_RETRANSMITTED case above - and
rds_send_drop_to() runs on socket close. Both unlink the message
under cp_lock and put their own reference, leaving the xmit-path
reference stranded.
Drop the reference directly in that case.

rds_rm_size() handles RDS_CMSG_RDMA_ARGS after only CMSG_OK() and then
calls rds_rdma_extra_size(), which reads args->local_vec_addr and
args->nr_local without first checking that cmsg_len covers struct
rds_rdma_args. The other two RDS_CMSG_RDMA_ARGS consumers already guard
this: rds_rdma_bytes() in rds_sendmsg() and rds_cmsg_rdma_args() in
rds_cmsg_send() both reject cmsg_len < CMSG_LEN(sizeof(struct
rds_rdma_args)). Add the same check to rds_rm_size() so all three RDMA
args passes are consistent.
This is a consistency and hardening change with no behavioral effect for
well-formed senders and no reachable bug today: rds_rdma_bytes() runs
before rds_rm_size() in rds_sendmsg() and already rejects a short
RDS_CMSG_RDMA_ARGS, so the size pass is not reached with an undersized
cmsg. But rds_rm_size() reads the args independently of that earlier
pass, and nothing in rds_rm_size() itself records or enforces the
precondition, so a reader or a future refactor of the size pass cannot
tell the cmsg has already been length-checked. Applying the same
cmsg_len guard in all three RDS_CMSG_RDMA_ARGS consumers keeps that
invariant local to each and robust to reordering.

Commit 3db6e0d172c9 ("rds: use RCU to synchronize work-enqueue with
connection teardown") modifies rds_sendmsg to avoid enqueueing work
while a tear down is in progress. However, it also changed the return
value of rds_sendmsg to that of rds_send_xmit instead of the
payload_len. This means the user may incorrectly receive errno values
when it should have simply received a payload of 0 while the peer
attempts a reconnections. So this patch corrects the teardown handling
code to only use the out error path in that case, thus restoring the
original payload_len return value.

Even though a peer may have already received a
non-zero value for "RDS_EXTHDR_NPATHS" from a node in the past,
the current peer may not.
Therefore it is important to initiate another rds_send_ping()
after a re-connect to any peer:
It is unknown at that time if we're still talking to the same
instance of RDS kernel modules on the other side.
Otherwise, the peer may just operate on a single lane
("c_npaths == 0"), not knowing that more lanes are available.
However, if "c_with_sport_idx" is supported,
we also need to check that the connection we accepted on lane#0
meets the proper source port modulo requirement, as we fan out:
Since the exchange of "RDS_EXTHDR_NPATHS" and "RDS_EXTHDR_SPORT_IDX"
is asynchronous, initially we have no choice but to accept an incoming
connection (via "accept") in the first slot ("cp_index == 0")
for backwards compatibility.
But that very connection may have come from a different lane
with "cp_index != 0", since the peer thought that we already understood
and handled "c_with_sport_idx" properly, as indicated by a previous
exchange before a module was reloaded.
In short:
If a module gets reloaded, we recover from that, but do *not*
allow a downgrade to support fewer lanes.
Downgrades would require us to merge messages from separate lanes,
which is rather tricky with the current RDS design.
Each lane has its own sequence number space and all messages
would need to be re-sequenced as we merge, all while
handling "RDS_FLAG_RETRANSMITTED" and "cp_retrans" properly.

Instead of just blocking the sender until "c_npaths" is known
(it gets updated upon the receipt of a MPRDS PONG message),
simply use the first lane (cp_index#0).
But just using the first lane isn't enough.
As soon as we enqueue messages on a different lane, we'd run the risk
of out-of-order delivery of RDS messages.
Earlier messages enqueued on "cp_index == 0" could be delivered later
than more recent messages enqueued on "cp_index > 0", mostly because of
possible head of line blocking issues causing the first lane to be
slower.
To avoid that, we simply take a snapshot of "cp_next_tx_seq" at the
time we're about to fan-out to more lanes.
Then we delay the transmission of messages enqueued on other lanes
with "cp_index > 0" until cp_index#0 caught up with the delivery of
new messages (from "cp_send_queue") as well as in-flight
messages (from "cp_retrans") that haven't been acknowledged yet
by the receiver.
We also add a new counter "mprds_catchup_tx0_retries" to keep track
of how many times "rds_send_xmit" had to suspend activities,
because it was waiting for the first lane to catch up.

Upon "sendmsg", RDS/TCP selects a backend connection based
on a hash calculated from the source-port ("RDS_MPATH_HASH").
However, "rds_tcp_accept_one" accepts connections
in the order they arrive, which is non-deterministic.
Therefore the mapping of the sender's "cp->cp_index"
to that of the receiver changes if the backend
connections are dropped and reconnected.
However, connection state that's preserved across reconnects
(e.g. "cp_next_rx_seq") relies on that sender<->receiver
mapping to never change.
So we make sure that client and server of the TCP connection
have the exact same "cp->cp_index" across reconnects by
encoding "cp->cp_index" in the lower three bits of the
client's TCP source port.
A new extension "RDS_EXTHDR_SPORT_IDX" is introduced,
that allows the server to tell the difference between
clients that do the "cp->cp_index" encoding, and
legacy clients that pick source ports randomly.

Introduce a new extension header type RDSV3_EXTHDR_RDMA_BYTES for
an RDMA initiator to exchange rdma byte counts to its target.
Currently, RDMA operations cannot precisely account how many bytes a
peer just transferred via RDMA, which limits per-connection statistics
and future policy (e.g., monitoring or rate/cgroup accounting of RDMA
traffic).
In this patch we expand rds_message_add_extension to accept multiple
extensions, and add new flag to RDS header: RDS_FLAG_EXTHDR_EXTENSION,

acquire/release_in_xmit() work as bit lock in rds_send_xmit(), so they
are expected to ensure acquire/release memory ordering semantics.
However, test_and_set_bit/clear_bit() don't imply such semantics, on

This reverts commit 0c85a7e87465f2d4cbc768e245f4f45b2f299b05.
The games with 'rm' are on (two separate instances) of a local variable,
and make no difference.
Quoting Aditya Pakki:
"I was the author of the patch and it was the cause of the giant UMN
revert.
The patch is garbage and I was unaware of the steps involved in
retracting it. I *believed* the maintainers would pull it, given it
was already under Greg's list. The patch does not introduce any bugs
but is pointless and is stupid. I accept my incompetence and for not
requesting a revert earlier."

In testing with mprds enabled, Oracle Cluster nodes after reboot were
not able to communicate with others nodes and so failed to rejoin
the cluster. Peers with lower IP address initiated connection but the
node could not respond as it choose a different path and could not
initiate a connection as it had a higher IP address.
With this patch, when a node sends out a packet and the selected path
is down, all other paths are also checked and any down paths are
re-connected.

RDS composite message(rdma + control) user notification needs to be
triggered once the full message is delivered and such a fix was
added as part of commit 941f8d55f6d61 ("RDS: RDMA: Fix the composite
message user notification"). But rds_send_remove_from_sock is missing
data part notify check and hence at times the user don't get
notification which isn't desirable.
One way is to fix the rds_send_remove_from_sock to check of that case
but considering the ordering complexity with completion handler and
rdma + control messages are always dispatched back to back in same send
context, just delaying the signaled completion on rmda work request also
gets the desired behaviour. i.e Notifying application only after
RDMA + control message send completes. So patch updates the earlier
fix with this approach. The delay signaling completions of rdma op
till the control message send completes fix was done by Venkat
Venkatsubra in downstream kernel.

For RDMA transports, RDS TOS is an extension of IB QoS(Annex A13)
to provide clients the ability to segregate traffic flows for
different type of data. RDMA CM abstract it for ULPs using
rdma_set_service_type(). Internally, each traffic flow is
represented by a connection with all of its independent resources
like that of a normal connection, and is differentiated by
service type. In other words, there can be multiple qp connections
between an IP pair and each supports a unique service type.
The feature has been added from RDSv4.1 onwards and supports
rolling upgrades. RDMA connection metadata also carries the tos
information to set up SL on end to end context. The original
code was developed by Bang Nguyen in downstream kernel back in
2.6.32 kernel days and it has evolved over period of time.

per comment from Leon in rdma mailing list
https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/10/31/312 :
Please don't forget to remove user triggered WARN_ON.
https://lwn.net/Articles/769365/
"Greg Kroah-Hartman raised the problem of core kernel API code that will
use WARN_ON_ONCE() to complain about bad usage; that will not generate
the desired result if WARN_ON_ONCE() is configured to crash the machine.
He was told that the code should just call pr_warn() instead, and that
the called function should return an error in such situations. It was
generally agreed that any WARN_ON() or WARN_ON_ONCE() calls that can be
triggered from user space need to be fixed."
in addition harden rds_sendmsg to detect and overcome issues with
invalid sg count and fail the sendmsg.

redundant copy_from_user in rds_sendmsg system call expose rds
to issue where rds_rdma_extra_size walk the rds iovec and and
calculate the number pf pages (sgs) it need to add to the tail of
rds message and later rds_cmsg_rdma_args copy the rds iovec again
and re calculate the same number and get different result causing
WARN_ON in rds_message_alloc_sgs.
fix this by doing the copy_from_user only once per rds_sendmsg
system call.
When issue occur the below dump is seen:

Registration of a memory region(MR) through FRMR/fastreg(unlike FMR)
needs a connection/qp. With a proxy qp, this dependency on connection
will be removed, but that needs more infrastructure patches, which is a
work in progress.
As an intermediate fix, the get_mr returns EOPNOTSUPP when connection
details are not populated. The MR registration through sendmsg() will
continue to work even with fast registration, since connection in this
case is formed upfront.
This patch fixes the following crash:

Currently, code at label *out* is unreachable. Fix this by updating
variable *ret* with -EINVAL, so the jump to *out* can be properly
executed instead of directly returning from function.

This patch enables RDS to use IPv6 addresses. For RDS/TCP, the
listener is now an IPv6 endpoint which accepts both IPv4 and IPv6
connection requests. RDS/RDMA/IB uses a private data (struct
rds_ib_connect_private) exchange between endpoints at RDS connection
establishment time to support RDMA. This private data exchange uses a
32 bit integer to represent an IP address. This needs to be changed in
order to support IPv6. A new private data struct
rds6_ib_connect_private is introduced to handle this. To ensure
backward compatibility, an IPv6 capable RDS stack uses another RDMA
listener port (RDS_CM_PORT) to accept IPv6 connection. And it
continues to use the original RDS_PORT for IPv4 RDS connections. When
it needs to communicate with an IPv6 peer, it uses the RDS_CM_PORT to
send the connection set up request.
v5: Fixed syntax problem (David Miller).
v4: Changed port history comments in rds.h (Sowmini Varadhan).
v3: Added support to set up IPv4 connection using mapped address
(David Miller).
Added support to set up connection between link local and non-link
addresses.
Various review comments from Santosh Shilimkar and Sowmini Varadhan.
v2: Fixed bound and peer address scope mismatched issue.
Added back rds_connect() IPv6 changes.

This patch changes the internal representation of an IP address to use
struct in6_addr. IPv4 address is stored as an IPv4 mapped address.
All the functions which take an IP address as argument are also
changed to use struct in6_addr. But RDS socket layer is not modified
such that it still does not accept IPv6 address from an application.
And RDS layer does not accept nor initiate IPv6 connections.
v2: Fixed sparse warnings.

rds_sendmsg() calls rds_send_mprds_hash() to find a c_path to use to
send a message. Suppose the RDS connection is not yet up. In
rds_send_mprds_hash(), it does
if (conn->c_npaths == 0)
wait_event_interruptible(conn->c_hs_waitq,
(conn->c_npaths != 0));
If it is interrupted before the connection is set up,
rds_send_mprds_hash() will return a non-zero hash value. Hence
rds_sendmsg() will use a non-zero c_path to send the message. But if
the RDS connection ends up to be non-MP capable, the message will be
lost as only the zero c_path can be used.

if either or both of MSG_ZEROCOPY and SOCK_ZEROCOPY have not been
specified, the rm->data.op_mmp_znotifier allocation will be skipped.
In this case, it is invalid ot pass down a cmsghdr with
RDS_CMSG_ZCOPY_COOKIE, so return EINVAL from rds_msg_zcopy for this
case.

If the MSG_ZEROCOPY flag is specified with rds_sendmsg(), and,
if the SO_ZEROCOPY socket option has been set on the PF_RDS socket,
application pages sent down with rds_sendmsg() are pinned.
The pinning uses the accounting infrastructure added by
Commit a91dbff551a6 ("sock: ulimit on MSG_ZEROCOPY pages")
The payload bytes in the message may not be modified for the
duration that the message has been pinned. A multi-threaded
application using this infrastructure may thus need to be notified
about send-completion so that it can free/reuse the buffers
passed to rds_sendmsg(). Notification of send-completion will
identify each message-buffer by a cookie that the application
must specify as ancillary data to rds_sendmsg().
The ancillary data in this case has cmsg_level == SOL_RDS
and cmsg_type == RDS_CMSG_ZCOPY_COOKIE.

The existing model holds a reference from the rds_sock to the
rds_message, but the rds_message does not itself hold a sock_put()
on the rds_sock. Instead the m_rs field in the rds_message is
assigned when the message is queued on the sock, and nulled when
the message is dequeued from the sock.
We want to be able to notify userspace when the rds_message
is actually freed (from rds_message_purge(), after the refcounts
to the rds_message go to 0). At the time that rds_message_purge()
is called, the message is no longer on the rds_sock retransmit
queue. Thus the explicit reference for the m_rs is needed to
send a notification that will signal to userspace that
it is now safe to free/reuse any pages that may have
been pinned down for zerocopy.
This patch manages the m_rs assignment in the rds_message with
the necessary refcount book-keeping.

rds connection/workq management
An rds_connection can get added during netns deletion between lines 528
and 529 of
506 static void rds_tcp_kill_sock(struct net *net)
:
/* code to pull out all the rds_connections that should be destroyed */
:
528 spin_unlock_irq(&rds_tcp_conn_lock);
529 list_for_each_entry_safe(tc, _tc, &tmp_list, t_tcp_node)
530 rds_conn_destroy(tc->t_cpath->cp_conn);
Such an rds_connection would miss out the rds_conn_destroy()
loop (that cancels all pending work) and (if it was scheduled
after netns deletion) could trigger the use-after-free.
A similar race-window exists for the module unload path
in rds_tcp_exit -> rds_tcp_destroy_conns
Concurrency with netns deletion (rds_tcp_kill_sock()) must be handled
by checking check_net() before enqueuing new work or adding new
connections.
Concurrency with module-unload is handled by maintaining a module
specific flag that is set at the start of the module exit function,
and must be checked before enqueuing new work or adding new connections.
This commit refactors existing RDS_DESTROY_PENDING checks added by
commit 3db6e0d172c9 ("rds: use RCU to synchronize work-enqueue with
connection teardown") and consolidates all the concurrency checks
listed above into the function rds_destroy_pending().
