2026-08-07md/raid5: split reshape bios before bitmap accountingYu Kuai1-0/+19
RAID5 maps array sectors through different geometries before and after the reshape position. During llbitmap reshape, md core cannot account one bio against both geometries as a single bitmap range, because the old and new bitmap mappings can cover different chunks. Split bios that cross reshape_position before md_account_bio(), so the bitmap only sees ranges that belong to one side of the reshape boundary. mddev_bio_split_at_reshape_offset() uses bio_submit_split_bioset(), which submits the remainder immediately and returns the front split bio. If that front bio later has to wait for reshape, md_handle_request() must not retry the original bio pointer, because after the split that pointer is the already-submitted remainder. Track whether the split happened, clear the temporary BLK_STS_RESOURCE status after the internal clone completion, and resubmit the front bio directly after the reshape wait. Keep the old return-false retry path for unsplit bios, where md_handle_request() still owns the same bio. 2026-08-07md/raid5: reject llbitmap reshape when md chunk shrinksYu Kuai1-0/+3
llbitmap reshape keeps one live bitmap and cannot safely make an existing bitmap bit cover a smaller data range. The llbitmap chunksize itself will not shrink when mddev->chunk_sectors stays the same or grows. However, shrinking mddev->chunk_sectors shrinks sectors_per_chunk used by raid5_bitmap_sector_map(). That can shrink the effective data range covered by each bit across the old and new RAID5 geometry. Reject that reshape while llbitmap is active. 2026-08-07md/raid5: round bitmap stripes with sector divisionYu Kuai1-4/+9
raid5_bitmap_sector_map() aligns the array range to full RAID5 stripe widths before converting it to component sectors. That width is chunk_sectors multiplied by the number of data disks, and it is not always a power of two. Reproduce with a 4-disk RAID5, 1024-sector chunks, and three data disks. The full-stripe width is 3072 sectors. For a one-sector write at array sector 3072, correct rounding gives array range [3072, 6144), which maps to component range [1024, 2048). The old round_down()/round_up() logic instead gives [1024, 4096), which maps to [0, 1024). Use sector_div() based arithmetic so the rounded range is aligned to the actual RAID5 stripe width. The deterministic mapper test now reports the fixed component range as [1024, 2048), while the old mask-based range was [0, 1024). 2026-08-07md/raid5: reject zero-sector reshape chunksYu Kuai1-0/+5
Sashiko reported that RAID5 can accept a reshape chunk size that becomes zero sectors. chunk_size_store() stores the sysfs byte value as n >> 9, so writing a value below 512 bytes sets mddev->new_chunk_sectors to zero. RAID5 then accepted that pending reshape geometry and raid5_start_reshape() installed it into conf->chunk_sectors, letting reshape code divide by zero. Reject zero-sector chunks both in check_reshape(), where normal sysfs requests are validated, and in raid5_start_reshape(), so assembly/resume paths also cannot install zero chunk geometry. Test script: in QEMU, create a plain three-disk RAID5 array with 64K chunks, write/read back a small pattern, write 1 to /sys/block/md0/md/chunk_size, add a fourth disk, and run mdadm --grow --raid-devices=4 --backup-file=... . The script scans dmesg for divide error/Oops/KASAN signatures. 2026-07-31md: scope memalloc_noio to allocation critical sectionsChen Cheng1-5/+9
Storing a memalloc_noio_save() token in mddev->noio_flags lets one task save the token and another task restore it. With concurrent suspend sysfs writes, task A can enter PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO, return to userspace still in that scope, and later task B can restore A's saved token. Avoid tying the token lifetime to mddev. Keep mddev_suspend() and mddev_resume() only responsible for array suspension, and enter PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO only in the MD paths that allocate memory after the array has been suspended. Restore the token before resuming the array. A reproducer repeatedly writes suspend_lo and suspend_hi from concurrent workers and checks each worker's /proc/self/stat flags before and after the sysfs write. 2026-07-31md/raid5: complete discard bios while reshape is activeGenjian Zhang1-2/+6
make_discard_request() returns without completing the bio when reshape is in progress. Discard callers block in submit_bio_wait() waiting for a completion that never arrives. The caller hangs in uninterruptible sleep, and this does not resolve when reshape finishes. Complete the bio with BLK_STS_AGAIN so userspace can retry after reshape, consistent with the existing policy of not processing discard during reshape. Tested on a loop-backed RAID5 array during mdadm --grow: without this patch, blkdiscard hangs in bio_await() and remains in uninterruptible sleep after md reports "reshape done"; with this patch it returns -EAGAIN instead. 2026-07-30md: remove REQ_NOWAIT support from raid1/10/456Abd-Alrhman Masalkhi1-13/+0
REQ_NOWAIT support in md personalities that can block internally is fundamentally incomplete. While reads can avoid some blocking paths, write requests can still encounter cases where one mirror succeeds while another returns -EAGAIN. At that point md cannot distinguish queue pressure from a real device failure, so it can neither record a bad block nor safely retry the write without REQ_NOWAIT, leaving mirrors with divergent data. Rather than continue advertising REQ_NOWAIT support for personalities that cannot implement it correctly, remove it from raid1, raid10 and raid456. Keep REQ_NOWAIT for linear and raid0, which only remap bios to their underlying devices; stacked limits will still clear the feature if any component device lacks REQ_NOWAIT support. 2026-07-30md/raid5: protect lockless recovery_offset accesses during reshapeChen Cheng1-25/+25
During reshape: - reshape_request() advances rdev->recovery_offset for non-In_sync devices locklessly. - analyse_stripe() reads rdev->recovery_offset locklessly to decide: a. use a replacement device to read ? b. a device can already be treated as in-sync for the current stripe ? one possible scenario is: CPU1 CPU2 reshape_request() -> mddev->curr_resync_completed = sector_nr -> if (!mddev->reshape_backwards) -> rdev->recovery_offset = sector_nr analyse_stripe(sh) -> rdev = conf->disks[i].replacement -> if (rdev->recovery_offset >= sh->sector + stripe_sectors) set_bit(R5_ReadRepl) -> or -> if (sh->sector + stripe_sectors <= rdev->recovery_offset) set_bit(R5_Insync) And it could be: - reading from a replacement before it is recovered far enough; or - treating a not-yet-recovered device as in-sync for the current stripe. 2026-07-30md/raid5: fix reshape deadlock while failed devices more than max degradedChen Cheng1-0/+75
reshape stripe lifetime: - start reshape ==> reshape_request(): * get destination stripe, - if need to copy source data chunks, set STRIPE_EXPANDING; - or, if new regions past the old end of the array, zero-filled, no need source data, set STRIPE_EXPANDING | STRIPE_READY * get source stripe, - set STRIPE_EXPAND_SOURCE - handle expand stripe ==> handle_stripe(): reshape use reconstruct-write to construct stripe, four stages: 1. prepare source data chunks for old geometry stripe - fill source stripe data by read or compute 2. move data from old geometry source stripe to new geometry destination stripe - source stripe clear STRIPE_EXPAND_SOURCE - drain data from source to destination stripe - mark stripe chunk as R5_Expanded|R5_UPTODATE when the drain from source chunk to destination chunk is completed - all stripe chunks drain are completed, then mark STRIPE_EXPAND_READY 3. calculate p/q chunks for destination stripe - if destination stripe doesn't depends on source dstripe, then we can clear STRIPE_EXPANDING 4. write-out to disks and release - set R5_Wantwrite|R5_Locked, writeout to disk - if write-out succeeded, clear STRIPE_EXPAND_READY, and decrement reshape_stripe, call md_done_sync() to report reshape progress. 1. cleanup the following kinds of **destination stripe** when failed device more than max degraded: - new regions past the old end of the array, zero-filled in place, requires no source data. (STRIPE_EXPANDING | STRIPE_EXPAND_READY) - prepare source data chunks already done, and writeout failed (STRIPE_EXPAND_READY) 2. destination stripes that need source data (STRIPE_EXPANDING, no STRIPE_HANDLE) - these kind of stripes sit idle in the stripe cache and are never seen by handle_stripe(). So clean up indirectly when their source stripe (type 3) is processed. 3. source stripes (STRIPE_EXPAND_SOURCE) - hit handle_stripe() after their member disks are marked Faulty. - clear STRIPE_EXPAND_SOURCE, finds and cleanup all dependent destination stripes that were waiting for data. - walks the source's data disks, compute the corresponding destination sector, looks up the destination stripe, and do cleanup(clear flags, dec counters, call md_done_sync()) Reproducer: - Create a 4-disk RAID5 with mdadm on top of 5 disposable test disks wrapped by dm targets. - Add the 5th device as a spare and start a 4 -> 5 reshape. - Wait until /sys/block/mdX/md/sync_action reports "reshape". - Inject failures on two members so reshape exceeds max_degraded. - After a few seconds, write "frozen" to /sys/block/mdX/md/sync_action. Before this fix, the write blocks indefinitely. Read-error variant: - Use dm-dust on /dev/sd[b-f]. - Preload bad blocks on two source members, e.g. dust0 and dust1: dmsetup message dust0 0 addbadblock <range> dmsetup message dust1 0 addbadblock <range> - Start reshape: mdadm -C /dev/mdX -e 1.2 -l 5 -n 4 -c 64 \ --assume-clean /dev/mapper/dust{0..3} mdadm --manage /dev/mdX --add /dev/mapper/dust4 mdadm --grow /dev/mdX -n 5 --backup-file=/tmp/grow.backup & - Once reshape starts, enable the injected read failures: dmsetup message dust0 0 enable dmsetup message dust1 0 enable - Then: echo frozen > /sys/block/mdX/md/sync_action hangs forever before the fix. Write-error variant: - Use dm-flakey on /dev/sd[b-f]. - Start the same 4 -> 5 reshape on flakey0..flakey4. - Once reshape starts, switch two members, e.g. flakey3 and flakey4, to error_writes. - Then: echo frozen > /sys/block/mdX/md/sync_action hangs forever before the fix. md_do_sync() exits its main loop on MD_RECOVERY_INTR but then blocks forever at: wait_event(mddev->recovery_wait, !atomic_read(&mddev->recovery_active)); After the fix recovery_active drains to zero, md_do_sync() prints md/raid:md0: Cannot continue operation (2/5 failed). md: md0: reshape interrupted. Call break_stripe_batch_list() when the batch is finished, or, a stripe has to be dropped out of the batch. break_stripe_batch_list() reads stripe state several times while request paths can update thost state words concurrently with lockless bitops, which reported by KCSAN. Use a snapshot to guarantees that the value used for warning, copying, and handle checks is internally consistent at current read moment. llbitmap discard is useful even when no underlying member device supports it. The discard still converts the llbitmap range to unwritten, so later reads and recovery do not rely on stale parity for that range. Let llbitmap discard bypass the raid5 lower discard support check. If lower discard is not safe or not supported, complete the accounted clone after md_account_bio() so the llbitmap conversion callbacks run without member discard bios. Raid5 used to disable discard limits when devices_handle_discard_safely was not set or when stacked member limits could not support a full-stripe discard. That hides discard from userspace before raid5 can decide whether a request can be handled safely. Follow other virtual drivers and advertise a UINT_MAX discard limit for the md device. Cache lower discard support in r5conf when setting queue limits, and reject unsupported discard bios before queuing stripe work. 2026-06-21md/raid5: account discard IOYu Kuai1-10/+23
Raid5 handles discard bios internally through make_discard_request() and never passes them through md_account_bio(). As a result, discard IO is missing the md-device iostat accounting that normal raid5 IO and discard IO in other raid levels get from md_account_bio(). Before accounting the bio, trim the request to the full data stripes that raid5 will actually discard. The first full stripe is the ceiling of the bio start divided by data-stripe sectors, and the last full stripe is the floor of the bio end divided by data-stripe sectors. Account that exact MD logical full-stripe range, then restore the original iterator so bio completion and iostat still cover the original request. 2026-05-31dm-raid: only requeue bios when dm is suspendingBenjamin Marzinski1-2/+5
Returning DM_MAPIO_REQUEUE from the target map() function only requeues the bio during noflush suspends. During regular operations or during flushing suspends, it fails the bio. Failing the bio during flushing suspends is the correct behavior here. The bio cannot be handled, and dm-raid cannot suspend while it is outstanding. But during normal operations, dm-raid should not push the bio back to dm. Instead, wait for the reshape to be resumed. 2026-04-28md/raid5: Fix UAF on IO across the reshape positionBenjamin Marzinski1-1/+6
If make_stripe_request() returns STRIPE_WAIT_RESHAPE, raid5_make_request() will free the cloned bio. But raid5_make_request() can call make_stripe_request() multiple times, writing to the various stripes. If that bio got added to the toread or towrite lists of a stripe disk in an earlier call to make_stripe_request(), then it's not safe to just free the bio if a later part of it is found to cross the reshape position. Doing so can lead to a UAF error, when bio_endio() is called on the bio for the earlier stripes. Instead, raid5_make_request() needs to wait until all parts of the bio have called bio_endio(). To do this, bios that cross the reshape position while the reshape can't make progress are flagged as needing to wait for all parts to complete. When raid5_make_request() has a bio that failed make_stripe_request() with STRIPE_WAIT_RESHAPE, it sets bi->bi_private to a completion struct and waits for completion after ending the bio. When the bio_endio() is called for the last time on a clone bio with bi->bi_private set, it wakes up the waiter. This guarantees that raid5_make_request() doesn't return until the cloned bio needing a retry for io across the reshape boundary is safely cleaned up. There is a simple reproducer available at [1]. Compile the kernel with KASAN for more useful reporting when the error is triggered (this is not necessary to see the bug). 2026-04-07md/raid5: fix soft lockup in retry_aligned_read()Chia-Ming Chang1-1/+7
When retry_aligned_read() encounters an overlapped stripe, it releases the stripe via raid5_release_stripe() which puts it on the lockless released_stripes llist. In the next raid5d loop iteration, release_stripe_list() drains the stripe onto handle_list (since STRIPE_HANDLE is set by the original IO), but retry_aligned_read() runs before handle_active_stripes() and removes the stripe from handle_list via find_get_stripe() -> list_del_init(). This prevents handle_stripe() from ever processing the stripe to resolve the overlap, causing an infinite loop and soft lockup. Fix this by using __release_stripe() with temp_inactive_list instead of raid5_release_stripe() in the failure path, so the stripe does not go through the released_stripes llist. This allows raid5d to break out of its loop, and the overlap will be resolved when the stripe is eventually processed by handle_stripe(). 2026-03-22md/raid5: skip 2-failure compute when other disk is R5_LOCKEDFengWei Shih1-0/+2
When skip_copy is enabled on a doubly-degraded RAID6, a device that is being written to will be in R5_LOCKED state with R5_UPTODATE cleared. If a new read triggers fetch_block() while the write is still in flight, the 2-failure compute path may select this locked device as a compute target because it is not R5_UPTODATE. Because skip_copy makes the device page point directly to the bio page, reconstructing data into it might be risky. Also, since the compute marks the device R5_UPTODATE, it triggers WARN_ON in ops_run_io() which checks that R5_SkipCopy and R5_UPTODATE are not both set. This can be reproduced by running small-range concurrent read/write on a doubly-degraded RAID6 with skip_copy enabled, for example: mdadm -C /dev/md0 -l6 -n6 -R -f /dev/loop[0-3] missing missing echo 1 > /sys/block/md0/md/skip_copy fio --filename=/dev/md0 --rw=randrw --bs=4k --numjobs=8 \ --iodepth=32 --size=4M --runtime=30 --time_based --direct=1 Fix by checking R5_LOCKED before proceeding with the compute. 2026-03-16md/raid5: set chunk_sectors to enable full stripe I/O splittingYu Kuai1-0/+1
Set chunk_sectors to the full stripe width (io_opt) so that the block layer splits I/O at full stripe boundaries. This ensures that large writes are aligned to full stripes, avoiding the read-modify-write overhead that occurs with partial stripe writes in RAID-5/6. When chunk_sectors is set, the block layer's bio splitting logic in get_max_io_size() uses blk_boundary_sectors_left() to limit I/O size to the boundary. This naturally aligns split bios to full stripe boundaries, enabling more efficient full stripe writes. This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2026-01-26md: mark rdev Faulty when badblocks setting failsLi Nan1-13/+9
Currently when sync read fails and badblocks set fails (exceeding 512 limit), rdev isn't immediately marked Faulty. Instead 'recovery_disabled' is set and non-In_sync rdevs are removed later. This preserves array availability if bad regions aren't read, but bad sectors might be read by users before rdev removal. This occurs due to incorrect resync/recovery_offset updates that include these bad sectors. When badblocks exceed 512, keeping the disk provides little benefit while adding complexity. Prompt disk replacement is more important. Therefore when badblocks set fails, directly call md_error to mark rdev Faulty immediately, preventing potential data access issues. After this change, cleanup of offset update logic and 'recovery_disabled' handling will follow. 2025-11-30md/raid5: fix IO hang when array is broken with IO inflightYu Kuai1-2/+4
Following test can cause IO hang: mdadm -CvR /dev/md0 -l10 -n4 /dev/sd[abcd] --assume-clean --chunk=64K --bitmap=none sleep 5 echo 1 > /sys/block/sda/device/delete echo 1 > /sys/block/sdb/device/delete echo 1 > /sys/block/sdc/device/delete echo 1 > /sys/block/sdd/device/delete dd if=/dev/md0 of=/dev/null bs=8k count=1 iflag=direct Root cause: 1) all disks removed, however all rdevs in the array is still in sync, IO will be issued normally. 2) IO failure from sda, and set badblocks failed, sda will be faulty and MD_SB_CHANGING_PENDING will be set. 3) error recovery try to recover this IO from other disks, IO will be issued to sdb, sdc, and sdd. 4) IO failure from sdb, and set badblocks failed again, now array is broken and will become read-only. 5) IO failure from sdc and sdd, however, stripe can't be handled anymore because MD_SB_CHANGING_PENDING is set: handle_stripe handle_stripe if (test_bit MD_SB_CHANGING_PENDING) set_bit STRIPE_HANDLE goto finish // skip handling failed stripe release_stripe if (test_bit STRIPE_HANDLE) list_add_tail conf->hand_list 6) later raid5d can't handle failed stripe as well: raid5d md_check_recovery md_update_sb if (!md_is_rdwr()) // can't clear pending bit return if (test_bit MD_SB_CHANGING_PENDING) break; // can't handle failed stripe Since MD_SB_CHANGING_PENDING can never be cleared for read-only array, fix this problem by skip this checking for read-only array. 2025-11-11md: allow configuring logical block sizeLi Nan1-0/+1
Previously, raid array used the maximum logical block size (LBS) of all member disks. Adding a larger LBS disk at runtime could unexpectedly increase RAID's LBS, risking corruption of existing partitions. This can be reproduced by: ``` # LBS of sd[de] is 512 bytes, sdf is 4096 bytes. mdadm -CRq /dev/md0 -l1 -n3 /dev/sd[de] missing --assume-clean # LBS is 512 cat /sys/block/md0/queue/logical_block_size # create partition md0p1 parted -s /dev/md0 mklabel gpt mkpart primary 1MiB 100% lsblk | grep md0p1 # LBS becomes 4096 after adding sdf mdadm --add -q /dev/md0 /dev/sdf cat /sys/block/md0/queue/logical_block_size # partition lost partprobe /dev/md0 lsblk | grep md0p1 ``` Simply restricting larger-LBS disks is inflexible. In some scenarios, only disks with 512 bytes LBS are available currently, but later, disks with 4KB LBS may be added to the array. Making LBS configurable is the best way to solve this scenario. After this patch, the raid will: - store LBS in disk metadata - add a read-write sysfs 'mdX/logical_block_size' Future mdadm should support setting LBS via metadata field during RAID creation and the new sysfs. Though the kernel allows runtime LBS changes, users should avoid modifying it after creating partitions or filesystems to prevent compatibility issues. Only 1.x metadata supports configurable LBS. 0.90 metadata inits all fields to default values at auto-detect. Supporting 0.90 would require more extensive changes and no such use case has been observed. Note that many RAID paths rely on PAGE_SIZE alignment, including for metadata I/O. A larger LBS than PAGE_SIZE will result in metadata read/write failures. So this config should be prevented. 2025-09-17md: init queue_limits->max_hw_wzeroes_unmap_sectors parameterZhang Yi1-0/+1
The parameter max_hw_wzeroes_unmap_sectors in queue_limits should be equal to max_write_zeroes_sectors if it is set to a non-zero value. However, the stacked md drivers call md_init_stacking_limits() to initialize this parameter to UINT_MAX but only adjust max_write_zeroes_sectors when setting limits. Therefore, this discrepancy triggers a value check failure in blk_validate_limits(). $ modprobe scsi_debug num_parts=2 dev_size_mb=8 lbprz=1 lbpws=1 $ mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-device=2 /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 mdadm: Defaulting to version 1.2 metadata mdadm: RUN_ARRAY failed: Invalid argument Fix this failure by explicitly setting max_hw_wzeroes_unmap_sectors to max_write_zeroes_sectors. Since the linear and raid0 drivers support write zeroes, so they can support unmap write zeroes operation if all of the backend devices support it. However, the raid1/10/5 drivers don't support write zeroes, so we have to set it to zero. 2025-09-06md/md-bitmap: add a new method blocks_synced() in bitmap_operationsYu Kuai1-4/+11
Currently, raid456 must perform a whole array initial recovery to build initail xor data, then IO to the array won't have to read all the blocks in underlying disks. This behavior will affect IO performance a lot, and nowadays there are huge disks and the initial recovery can take a long time. Hence llbitmap will support lazy initial recovery in following patches. This method is used to check if data blocks is synced or not, if not then IO will still have to read all blocks for raid456.
