2026-07-27perf ui hists: Fix stack use-after-return in symbol_filter_strIan Rogers1-0/+1
In evsel__hists_browse(), the local stack array 'buf' is assigned directly to the persistent 'hists->symbol_filter_str' pointer. When the browser returns or is exited, this dangling pointer remains active in the 'hists' struct and is read asynchronously by the perf top background timer, triggering a stack use-after-return. Fix it by properly duplicating the input string using strdup(), safely invoking zfree() to prevent memory leaks when overwriting, and cleanly resetting and freeing the symbol filter string upon exiting the browser. 2026-06-17perf c2c: Fix hist entry and format list leaks in c2c_he_free()Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
c2c_he_free() calls hists__delete_entries() which only walks the output-sorted entries tree. During c2c resort, when cacheline entries are merged and the redundant entry is freed, the inner hists have not been output-resorted yet, so hists->entries is empty. The actual inner hist_entry objects live in entries_in_array[] and entries_collapsed, which are never walked, leaking all inner hist_entry objects for every merged cacheline. Additionally, the dynamically allocated format entries on hists->list are never unregistered or freed. Fix both issues by switching to hists__delete_all_entries() which walks all rb_root trees, and calling perf_hpp__reset_output_field() to clean up format entries. 2026-06-10perf hists: Fix snprintf() in hists__scnprintf_title() UID filter pathArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-3/+4
hists__scnprintf_title() accumulates formatted output into a buffer using scnprintf() for all filter clauses except the UID filter, which uses snprintf(). If the buffer fills up and snprintf() returns more than the remaining space, printed exceeds size and the next 'size - printed' underflows, causing later scnprintf() calls to write past the buffer. Switch the UID filter clause to scnprintf() to match the rest of the function. 2026-03-26perf report: Add comm_nodigit sort keyStephen Brennan1-0/+3
The "comm" column allows grouping events by the process command. It is intended to group like programs, despite having different PIDs. But some workloads may adjust their own command, so that a unique identifier (e.g. a PID or some other numeric value) is part of the command name. This destroys the utility of "comm", forcing perf to place each unique process name into its own bucket, which can contribute to a combinatorial explosion of memory use in perf report. Create a less strict version of this column, which ignores digits when comparing command names. Commands whose names are the same (ignoring digits) are sorted into the same histogram buckets, and displayed with the placeholder value "<N>" in the place of digits. For example, hypothetical command names "kworker/1" "kworker/2" "kworker/3" would sort into the same bucket and be represented as "kworker/<N>". 2025-01-16perf hist: Fix bogus profiles when filters are enabledDmitry Vyukov1-1/+10
When a filtered column is not present in the sort order, profiles become arbitrary broken. Filtered and non-filtered entries are collapsed together, and the filtered-by field ends up with a random value (either from a filtered or non-filtered entry). If we end up with filtered entry/value, then the whole collapsed entry will be filtered out and will be missing in the profile. If we end up with non-filtered entry/value, then the overhead value will be wrongly larger (include some subset of filtered out samples). This leads to very confusing profiles. The problem is hard to notice, and if noticed hard to understand. If the filter is for a single value, then it can be fixed by adding the corresponding field to the sort order (provided user understood the problem). But if the filter is for multiple values, it's impossible to fix b/c there is no concept of binary sorting based on filter predicate (we want to group all non-filtered values in one bucket, and all filtered values in another). Examples of affected commands: perf report --tid=123 perf report --sort overhead, symbol --comm=foo,bar Fix this by considering filtered status as the highest priority sort/collapse predicate. As a side effect this effectively adds a new feature of showing profile where several lines are combined based on arbitrary filtering predicate. For example, showing symbols from binaries foo and bar combined together, but not from other binaries; or showing combined overhead of several particular threads. 2024-08-14perf annotate: Save branch counters for each blockKan Liang1-2/+3
When annotating a basic block, it's useful to display the occurrences of other events in the block. The branch counter feature is only available for newer Intel platforms. So a dedicated option to display the branch counters is not introduced. Reuse the existing --total-cycles option, which triggers the annotation of a basic block and displays the cycle-related annotation. When the branch counters information is available, the branch counters are automatically appended after all the cycle-related annotation. Accounting the branch counters as well when accounting the cycles in hist__account_cycles(). In 'struct annotated_branch', introduce a br_cntr array to save the accumulation of each branch counter. In a sample, all the branch counters for a branch are saved in a u64 space. Because the saturation of a branch counter is small, e.g., for Intel Sierra Forest, the saturation is only 3. Add ANNOTATION__BR_CNTR_SATURATED_FLAG to indicate if a branch counter once saturated. That can be used to indicate a potential event lost because of the saturation. 2024-05-06perf dso: Add reference count checking and accessor functionsIan Rogers1-2/+2
Add reference count checking to struct dso, this can help with implementing correct reference counting discipline. To avoid RC_CHK_ACCESS everywhere, add accessor functions for the variables in struct dso. The majority of the change is mechanical in nature and not easy to split up. 2023-06-12perf callchain: Use pthread keys for tls callchain_cursorIan Rogers1-15/+31
Pthread keys are more portable than __thread and allow the association of a destructor with the key. Use the destructor to clean up TLS callchain cursors to aid understanding memory leaks. Committer notes: Had to fixup a series of unconverted places and also check for the return of get_tls_callchain_cursor() as it may fail and return NULL. In that unlikely case we now either print something to a file, if the caller was expecting to print a callchain, or return an error code to state that resolving the callchain isn't possible. In some cases this was made easier because thread__resolve_callchain() already can fail for other reasons, so this new one (cursor == NULL) can be added and the callers don't have to explicitely check for this new condition. Committer notes: I needed to initialize result to sample->ip to make sure is set to something, fixing a compile time error, mostly keeping the previous logic as build_alloc_func_list() already does debugging/error prints about what went wrong if it takes the 'goto out'. 2023-06-12perf thread: Add accessor functions for threadIan Rogers1-3/+3
Using accessors will make it easier to add reference count checking in later patches. Committer notes: thread->nsinfo wasn't wrapped as it is used together with nsinfo__zput(), where does a trick to set the field with a refcount being dropped to NULL, and that doesn't work well with using thread__nsinfo(thread), that loses the &thread->nsinfo pointer. When refcount checking is added to 'struct thread', later in this series, nsinfo__zput(RC_CHK_ACCESS(thread)->nsinfo) will be used to check the thread pointer. 39 is taken from the length of longest printable new API string: "Remote socket, same board Any cache hit". 2023-04-06perf map: Changes to reference countingIan Rogers1-5/+5
When a pointer to a map exists do a get, when that pointer is overwritten or freed, put the map. This avoids issues with gets and puts being inconsistently used causing, use after puts, etc. For example, the map in struct addr_location is changed to hold a reference count. Reference count checking and address sanitizer were used to identify issues. 2023-04-04perf map: Add accessor for dsoIan Rogers1-5/+5
Later changes will add reference count checking for struct map, with dso being the most frequently accessed variable. Add an accessor so that the reference count check is only necessary in one place. Additional changes: - add a dso variable to avoid repeated map__dso calls. - in builtin-mem.c dump_raw_samples, code only partially tested for dso == NULL. Make the possibility of NULL consistent. - in thread.c thread__memcpy fix use of spaces and use tabs.
