Pull overlayfs updates from Christian Brauner:
"This lets the merged overlayfs mount itself be idmapped through
mount_setattr(MOUNT_ATTR_IDMAP), in addition to the already supported
idmapped lower and upper layers. The same overlay tree can then be
exposed under a different ownership view.
Overlayfs already normalizes every underlying id through the relevant
layer idmap when ovl_copyattr() copies attributes into the overlay
inode. So the overlay inode's i_uid and i_gid are overlay-final ids.
The overlay mount idmap composes on top of that and is applied at the
overlay-inode boundary only while the underlying layers keep being
accessed with the mounter's credentials through their own (possibly
idmapped) mounts.
So this only changes how the caller sees the overlay inode and never
widens the mounter's access to the layers. The second,
mounter-credential check in ovl_permission() against the real inode
stays on the layer idmap.
Most paths need no change because the VFS applies the mount idmap to
the overlay inode before overlayfs runs or after it returns at the
syscall boundary. Overlayfs only has to change where it bypasses the
generic path.
This also included is a fix for a double end_creating() on the
overlayfs casefold-mismatch path"

ovl_create_real() releases the new dentry twice when the casefold
consistency check fails. The S_IFDIR branch calls end_creating() and
sets err, then falls through to the common out: label which calls
end_creating() on the same dentry again:

end_creating() is end_dirop(), which does inode_unlock() on the parent
and dput() on the dentry, so the parent directory's i_rwsem is unlocked
twice and the dentry is put twice. The second unlock releases a lock
that is not held, which is what wedges every later creation under that
parent, and the second dput() drops a reference that was never taken.
The branch was added by commit dfc7da402ccc ("ovl: Check for casefold
consistency when creating new dentries") as a bare dput(), which already
released the reference twice; commit fe497f0759e0 ("VFS: change
vfs_mkdir() to unlock on failure.") converted both sites to
end_creating(), adding the double unlock.
This is reachable by an unprivileged user. The casefold consistency of
the layers is validated at mount time in ovl_parse_layer(), and again on
every lookup in ovl_lookup_single(), but ofs->workdir is the internal
"work" subdirectory created inside the user-supplied workdir, and that
subdirectory is not re-checked. Marking it casefolded after the mount
therefore makes every ovl_create_temp() inherit the wrong state - and
that path reaches ovl_create_real() through ovl_start_creating_temp(),
which uses start_creating() with a generated name and so never runs the
lookup-time check.

The only time that 'false' is passed as the 'excl' arg to the ->create
inode_operation is in lookup_open() when ->atomic_open is not provided
by the parent directory.
*all* directory inode_operations which do not have ->atomic_open
completely ignore the 'excl' arg.
Therefore we don't need the 'excl' arg. Those few ->create operations
which pay attention to the arg are only ever called with a value of
'true'.
We remove that arg and change all ->create operations to behave as those
thhe arg were 'true'.

In preparation for allowing the overlay mount itself to be idmapped,
thread the mount's struct mnt_idmap into the inode creation path and
use it for inode_init_owner() instead of the hardcoded &nop_mnt_idmap.
The preallocated overlay inode's i_{u,g}id are copied into the override
credentials by ovl_override_creator_creds() to create the real upper
inode, so honoring the overlay mount idmap here makes newly created
files, directories, special files, symlinks and tmpfiles get the
caller's mapped fs{u,g}id once overlay mounts can be idmapped.
No functional change: until FS_ALLOW_IDMAP is set on ovl_fs_type the
overlay mount idmap is always &nop_mnt_idmap, so inode_init_owner()
behaves exactly as before.

Pull dcache busy loop updates from Al Viro:
"Fix livelocks in shrink_dcache_tree()
If shrink_dcache_tree() finds a dentry in the middle of being killed
by another thread, it has to wait until the victim finishes dying,
gets detached from the tree and ceases to pin its parent.
The way we used to deal with that amounted to busy-wait;
unfortunately, it's not just inefficient but can lead to reliably
reproducible hard livelocks.
Solved by having shrink_dentry_tree() attach a completion to such
dentry, with dentry_unlist() calling complete() on all objects
attached to it. With a bit of care it can be done without growing
struct dentry or adding overhead in normal case"

"We only have five patches in the LSM tree, but three of the five are
for an important bugfix relating to overlayfs and the mmap() and
mprotect() access controls for LSMs. Highlights below:
- Fix problems with the mmap() and mprotect() LSM hooks on overlayfs
As we are dealing with problems both in mmap() and mprotect() there
are essentially two components to this fix, spread across three
patches with all marked for stable.
The simplest portion of the fix is the creation of a new LSM hook,
security_mmap_backing_file(), that is used to enforce LSM mmap()
access controls on backing files in the stacked/overlayfs case. The
existing security_mmap_file() does not have visibility past the
user file. You can see from the associated SELinux hook callback
the code is fairly straightforward.
The mprotect() fix is a bit more complicated as there is no way in
the mprotect() code path to inspect both the user and backing
files, and bolting on a second file reference to vm_area_struct
wasn't really an option.
The solution taken here adds a LSM security blob and associated
hooks to the backing_file struct that LSMs can use to capture and
store relevant information from the user file. While the necessary
SELinux information is relatively small, a single u32, I expect
other LSMs to require more than that, and a dedicated backing_file
LSM blob provides a storage mechanism without negatively impacting
other filesystems.
I want to note that other LSMs beyond SELinux have been involved in
the discussion of the fixes presented here and they are working on
their own related changes using these new hooks, but due to other
issues those patches will be coming at a later date.

Stacked filesystems such as overlayfs do not currently provide the
necessary mechanisms for LSMs to properly enforce access controls on the
mmap() and mprotect() operations. In order to resolve this gap, a LSM
security blob is being added to the backing_file struct and the following
new LSM hooks are being created:
security_backing_file_alloc()
security_backing_file_free()
security_mmap_backing_file()
The first two hooks are to manage the lifecycle of the LSM security blob
in the backing_file struct, while the third provides a new mmap() access
control point for the underlying backing file. It is also expected that
LSMs will likely want to update their security_file_mprotect() callback
to address issues with their mprotect() controls, but that does not
require a change to the security_file_mprotect() LSM hook.
There are a three other small changes to support these new LSM hooks:
* Pass the user file associated with a backing file down to
alloc_empty_backing_file() so it can be included in the
security_backing_file_alloc() hook.
* Add getter and setter functions for the backing_file struct LSM blob
as the backing_file struct remains private to fs/file_table.c.
* Constify the file struct field in the LSM common_audit_data struct to
better support LSMs that need to pass a const file struct pointer into
the common LSM audit code.
Thanks to Arnd Bergmann for identifying the missing EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL()
and supplying a fixup.

Most of the places using d_alias are loops iterating through all aliases for
given inode; introduce a helper macro (for_each_alias(dentry, inode))
and convert open-coded instances of such loop to it.
They are easier to read that way and it reduces the noise on the next steps.
You _must_ hold inode->i_lock over that thing.

When ovl_create_real() is used to create a file on the upper filesystem
it needs to return the resulting dentry - positive and hashed.
It is usually the case the that dentry passed to the create function
(e.g. vfs_create()) will be suitable but this is not guaranteed. The
filesystem may unhash that dentry forcing a repeat lookup next time the
name is wanted.
So ovl_create_real() must be (and is) aware of this and prepared to
perform that lookup to get a hash positive dentry.
This is currently done under that same directory lock that provided
exclusion for the create. Proposed changes to locking will make this
not possible - as the name, rather than the directory, will be locked.
The new APIs provided for lookup and locking do not and cannot support
this pattern.
The lock isn't needed. ovl_create_real() can drop the lock and then get
a new lock for the lookup - then check that the lookup returned the
correct inode. In a well-behaved configuration where the upper
filesystem is not being modified by a third party, this will always work
reliably, and if there are separate modification it will fail cleanly.
So change ovl_create_real() to drop the lock and call
ovl_start_creating_upper() to find the correct dentry. Note that
start_creating doesn't fail if the name already exists.
The lookup previously used the name from newdentry which was guaranteed
to be stable because the parent directory was locked. As we now drop
the lock we lose that guarantee. As newdentry is unhashed it is
unlikely for the name to change, but safest not to depend on that. So
the expected name is now passed in to ovl_create_real() and that is
used.
This removes the only remaining use of ovl_lookup_upper, so it is
removed.

When creating new files the security layer expects the original
credentials to be passed. When cleaning up the code this was accidently
changed to pass the mounter's credentials by relying on current->cred
which is already overriden at this point. Pass the original credentials
directly.

"This converts all of overlayfs to use credential guards, eliminating
manual credential management throughout the filesystem.
Credential guard conversion:
- Convert all of overlayfs to use credential guards, replacing the

This makes credential handling visually explicit and eliminates a
class of potential bugs from mismatched override/revert calls.

Pull directory locking updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains the work to add centralized APIs for directory locking
operations.
This series is part of a larger effort to change directory operation
locking to allow multiple concurrent operations in a directory. The
ultimate goal is to lock the target dentry(s) rather than the whole
parent directory.
To help with changing the locking protocol, this series centralizes
locking and lookup in new helper functions. The helpers establish a
pattern where it is the dentry that is being locked and unlocked
(currently the lock is held on dentry->d_parent->d_inode, but that can
change in the future).
This also changes vfs_mkdir() to unlock the parent on failure, as well

The current code to override credentials for creation operations is
pretty difficult to understand. We effectively override the credentials
twice:
(1) override with the mounter's credentials
(2) copy the mounts credentials and override the fs{g,u}id with the inode {u,g}id
And then we elide the revert because it would be an idempotent revert.
That elision doesn't buy us anything anymore though because I've made it
all work without any reference counting anyway. All it does is mix the
two credential overrides together.
We can use a cleanup guard to clarify the creation codepaths and make
them easier to understand.
This just introduces the cleanup guard keeping the patch reviewable.
We'll convert the caller in follow-up patches and then drop the
duplicated code.

Extract the code that runs under overridden credentials into a separate
ovl_rename_upper() helper function and the code that runs before/after to
ovl_rename_start/end(). Error handling is simplified.
The helpers returns errors directly instead of using goto labels.

Occasionally the caller of end_creating() wants to keep using the dentry.
Rather then requiring them to dget() the dentry (when not an error)
before calling end_creating(), provide end_creating_keep() which does
this.
cachefiles and overlayfs make use of this.

vfs_mkdir() already drops the reference to the dentry on failure but it
leaves the parent locked.
This complicates end_creating() which needs to unlock the parent even
though the dentry is no longer available.
If we change vfs_mkdir() to unlock on failure as well as releasing the
dentry, we can remove the "parent" arg from end_creating() and simplify
the rules for calling it.
Note that cachefiles_get_directory() can choose to substitute an error
instead of actually calling vfs_mkdir(), for fault injection. In that
case it needs to call end_creating(), just as vfs_mkdir() now does on
error.
ovl_create_real() will now unlock on error. So the conditional
end_creating() after the call is removed, and end_creating() is called
internally on error.

A few callers want to lock for a rename and already have both dentries.
Also debugfs does want to perform a lookup but doesn't want permission
checking, so start_renaming_dentry() cannot be used.
This patch introduces start_renaming_two_dentries() which is given both
dentries. debugfs performs one lookup itself. As it will only continue
with a negative dentry and as those cannot be renamed or unlinked, it is
safe to do the lookup before getting the rename locks.
overlayfs uses start_renaming_two_dentries() in three places and selinux
uses it twice in sel_make_policy_nodes().
In sel_make_policy_nodes() we now lock for rename twice instead of just
once so the combined operation is no longer atomic w.r.t the parent
directory locks. As selinux_state.policy_mutex is held across the whole
operation this does not open up any interesting races.

Several callers perform a rename on a dentry they already have, and only
require lookup for the target name. This includes smb/server and a few
different places in overlayfs.
start_renaming_dentry() performs the required lookup and takes the
required lock using lock_rename_child()
It is used in three places in overlayfs and in ksmbd_vfs_rename().
In the ksmbd case, the parent of the source is not important - the
source must be renamed from wherever it is. So start_renaming_dentry()
allows rd->old_parent to be NULL and only checks it if it is non-NULL.
On success rd->old_parent will be the parent of old_dentry with an extra
reference taken. Other start_renaming function also now take the extra
reference and end_renaming() now drops this reference as well.
ovl_lookup_temp(), ovl_parent_lock(), and ovl_parent_unlock() are
all removed as they are no longer needed.
OVL_TEMPNAME_SIZE and ovl_tempname() are now declared in overlayfs.h so
that ovl_check_rename_whiteout() can access them.
ovl_copy_up_workdir() now always cleans up on error.

start_renaming() combines name lookup and locking to prepare for rename.
It is used when two names need to be looked up as in nfsd and overlayfs -
cases where one or both dentries are already available will be handled
separately.
__start_renaming() avoids the inode_permission check and hash
calculation and is suitable after filename_parentat() in do_renameat2().
It subsumes quite a bit of code from that function.
start_renaming() does calculate the hash and check X permission and is
suitable elsewhere:
- nfsd_rename()
- ovl_rename()
In ovl, ovl_do_rename_rd() is factored out of ovl_do_rename(), which
itself will be gone by the end of the series.

start_removing_dentry() is similar to start_removing() but instead of
providing a name for lookup, the target dentry is given.
start_removing_dentry() checks that the dentry is still hashed and in
the parent, and if so it locks and increases the refcount so that
end_removing() can be used to finish the operation.
This is used in cachefiles, overlayfs, smb/server, and apparmor.
There will be other users including ecryptfs.
As start_removing_dentry() takes an extra reference to the dentry (to be
put by end_removing()), there is no need to explicitly take an extra
reference to stop d_delete() from using dentry_unlink_inode() to negate
the dentry - as in cachefiles_delete_object(), and ksmbd_vfs_unlink().
cachefiles_bury_object() now gets an extra ref to the victim, which is
drops. As it includes the needed end_removing() calls, the caller
doesn't need them.

start_removing() is similar to start_creating() but will only return a
positive dentry with the expectation that it will be removed. This is
used by nfsd, cachefiles, and overlayfs. They are changed to also use
end_removing() to terminate the action begun by start_removing(). This
is a simple alias for end_dirop().
Apart from changes to the error paths, as we no longer need to unlock on
a lookup error, an effect on callers is that they don't need to test if
the found dentry is positive or negative - they can be sure it is
positive.

start_creating() is similar to simple_start_creating() but is not so
simple.
It takes a qstr for the name, includes permission checking, and does NOT
report an error if the name already exists, returning a positive dentry
instead.
This is currently used by nfsd, cachefiles, and overlayfs.
end_creating() is called after the dentry has been used.
end_creating() drops the reference to the dentry as it is generally no
longer needed. This is exactly the first section of end_creating_path()
so that function is changed to call the new end_creating()
These calls help encapsulate locking rules so that directory locking can
be changed.
Occasionally this change means that the parent lock is held for a
shorter period of time, for example in cachefiles_commit_tmpfile().
As this function now unlocks after an unlink and before the following
lookup, it is possible that the lookup could again find a positive
dentry, so a while loop is introduced there.
In overlayfs the ovl_lookup_temp() function has ovl_tempname()
split out to be used in ovl_start_creating_temp(). The other use
of ovl_lookup_temp() is preparing for a rename. When rename handling
is updated, ovl_lookup_temp() will be removed.

e8bd877fb76bb9f3 ("ovl: fix possible double unlink") added a sanity
check of !d_unhashed(child) to try to verify that child dentry was not
unlinked while parent dir was unlocked.
This "was not unlink" check has a false positive result in the case of
casefolded parent dir, because in that case, ovl_create_temp() returns
an unhashed dentry after ovl_create_real() gets an unhashed dentry from
ovl_lookup_upper() and makes it positive.
To avoid returning unhashed dentry from ovl_create_temp(), let
ovl_create_real() lookup again after making the newdentry positive,
so it always returns a hashed positive dentry (or an error).
This fixes the error in ovl_parent_lock() in ovl_check_rename_whiteout()
after ovl_create_temp() and allows mount of overlayfs with casefolding
enabled layers.

ovl_create_temp() treats "workdir" as a parent in which it creates an
object so it should use I_MUTEX_PARENT.
Prior to the commit identified below the lock was taken by the caller
which sometimes used I_MUTEX_PARENT and sometimes used I_MUTEX_NORMAL.
The use of I_MUTEX_NORMAL was incorrect but unfortunately copied into
ovl_create_temp().
Note to backporters: This patch only applies after the last Fixes given
below (post v6.16). To fix the bug in v6.7 and later the
inode_lock() call in ovl_copy_up_workdir() needs to nest using
I_MUTEX_PARENT.

which is actually not initialized at all.

This patch renames ovl_cleanup() to ovl_cleanup_locked() and makes it
static.

ovl_whiteout() relies on the workdir i_rwsem to provide exclusive access
to ofs->whiteout which it manipulates. Rather than depending on this,
add a new mutex, "whiteout_lock" to explicitly provide the required
locking. Use guard(mutex) for this so that we can return without
needing to explicitly unlock.
Then take the lock on workdir only when needed - to lookup the temp name
and to do the whiteout or link.

Rather than locking the directory(s) before calling
ovl_cleanup_and_whiteout(), change it (and ovl_whiteout()) to do the
locking, so the locking can be fine grained as will be needed for
proposed locking changes.
Sometimes this is called to whiteout something in the index dir, in
which case only that dir must be locked. In one case it is called on
something in an upperdir, so two directories must be locked. We use
ovl_lock_rename_workdir() for this and remove the restriction that
upperdir cannot be indexdir - because now sometimes it is.

This code:
performs a lookup_upper
creates a whiteout object
renames the whiteout over the result of the lookup
The create and the rename must be locked separately for proposed
directory locking changes. This patch takes a first step of moving the
lookup out of the locked region. A subsequent patch will separate the
create from the rename.

Rather than having three separate goto label: out_unlock, out_dput_old,
and out_dput, make use of that fact that dput() happily accepts a NULL
pointer to reduce this to just one goto label: out_unlock.
olddentry and newdentry are initialised to NULL and only set once a
value dentry is found. They are then dput() late in the function.
