2026-08-07transport: drop remote object-info fields from transport structJeff King1-5/+9
A remote object-info request needs three things: the transport for contacting the remote, the list of oids to request, and a place to store the output. Rather than take these as function parameters, we take only the transport object, and expect the caller to have placed the other two into special fields in the transport struct. But this doesn't make much sense. The set of oids and results are really only valid for one request. There is no reason the transport would need to hang on to them outside of the single function call. Even though we save a few lines passing the parameters around through the various vtable functions, the result is harder to understand (for example, who is responsible for cleaning up results, and when should it happen?). It also opens up the possibility of a subtle bug. A caller is likely to point those fields to stack variables which could go out of scope, and the transport struct would be left holding invalid pointers. This is mostly harmless now, as we disconnect the transport immediately after the sole caller of transport_fetch_object_info(). But conceptually we could keep the transport open and make multiple fetch calls (and reuse the same connection to the helper, to a remote HTTP server, and so on). So let's pull these out of the struct and pass them as function parameters. It's a little more verbose, but I think more clearly illustrates the intent. I've also tweaked a few function signatures to mark the input oid array as const, since it is purely an input to the function. Every failure in fetch_object_info() dies except one: a short read while parsing the attribute lines returns -1. That -1 is then passed through fetch_object_info_via_pack() and get_remote_info() up to cat-file, only to die() with a generic message. Die in fetch_object_info() instead, consistently with the rest of its error paths, and make fetch_object_info() void. 2026-08-07fetch-object-info: use dedicated struct for the resultsPablo Sabater1-2/+1
fetch_object_info() collects information about N objects, but it stores the results in an array of object_info. That struct holds the extended parameters of read_object_info() (The optional outputs the caller wants filled). Its pointers tell that function where to write the answers for a single object. object_info is not meant to be the final storage, and since fetch_object_info() does not call read_object_info(), there is no reason to use it. Using it means allocating one scalar per object per attribute just to have those pointers somewhere to point at. Add struct fetch_object_info_results. The caller sets the wants_* flags to say what it is interested in, and fetch_object_info() allocates one array per attribute. A set wants_* flag means "asked for", while a non-NULL array means "available". The caller releases the arrays with free_fetch_object_info_results(). The object_info_options string list is no longer needed. Filtering against the server's advertisement now sets local ask_* flags, and send_object_info_request() turns those into the v2 protocol option strings. remote_atom_map[] existed only to map those strings back into atom names, so drop it and build remote_allowed_atoms from the result arrays. Currently for wants_* and ask_* there is only the 'size' variant but a subsequent commit will add '*_type'. free_object_info_contents() loses its only caller and is dropped. Dropping the allow-list check makes the final else reachable from the wire, so die() instead of BUG(): an unknown attribute is the server's error, not ours. struct object_info_args groups three pointers that already live in the transport and are given to fetch_object_info(). Grouping them into a struct reduces the number of parameters, but it suggests that the three belong together, when they are unrelated and end up being accessed as args->* independently. Drop the struct and pass those parameters directly to fetch_object_info() and send_object_info_request(). This should have no change in behavior. The static allow-list in expand_atom() is hardcoded to allow only "objectname" and "objectsize" for remote queries. This works because, up to this point, servers will either support object-info with name and size or they do not support them at all. As object-info gains new capabilities, we cannot expect different servers with different Git versions to have the same object-info capabilities. Therefore, the client needs to adapt its allow-list to what the server advertises. The client now: 1. Requests the protocol option that the placeholder refers to (i.e. "size" for "%(objectsize)"). 2. Drops any requested option that the server does not advertise in fetch_object_info(). 3. Maps the remaining advertised options back to their placeholders and populates remote_allowed_atoms. 4. Uses remote_allowed_atoms in expand_atom(), preserving the previous behavior for supported placeholders. For example, if the client requests "%(objectsize) %(objecttype)" and the server only supports 'size', then the client only requests 'size'. The server returns the size (i.e "42") "%(objectsize)" is expanded normally while "%(objecttype)" expands to an empty string: "42 " Note that the empty string expansion is only for known but unsupported placeholders. "%(objectcolor)" which doesn't exist would die(). This honors what for-each-ref does for known but inapplicable atoms (placeholders). Move object_info_options out of get_remote_info() so the caller which has data can select what options will be requested instead of requesting always size. Move batch_object_write() out so output is always produced. If there are no supported attributes, the output is a blank line. Include "type" in the object_info_options even though the client does not yet know how to parse the server's "type" capability. As a result, "type" is always filtered out, allowing the tests to verify that known but unsupported placeholders expand to an empty string. Since the filter removes options by swapping with the last element, the list is no longer kept sorted. Drop the pre-sort in fetch_object_info_via_pack() and use the unsorted string_list lookup for the response header. This has no effect in performance as the list can only be two entries long ('size' and 'type'). 2026-07-24transport: add client support for object-infoCalvin Wan1-0/+45
Sometimes, it is beneficial to retrieve information about an object without downloading it entirely. The server-side logic for this functionality was implemented in commit "a2ba162cda (object-info: support for retrieving object info, 2021-04-20)." And the wire format is documented at https://git-scm.com/docs/protocol-v2#_object_info. Introduce client-side support for the object-info capability. Add its own function for object-info separate from existing fetch infrastructure. Currently, the client supports requesting a list of OIDs with the size attribute from a v2 server. If the server does not advertise this feature (i.e., transfer.advertiseobjectinfo is set to false), the client returns an error and exits. Note that: 1. The entire request is written into req_buf before being sent to the remote. This approach follows the pattern used in the send_fetch_request() logic within 'fetch-pack.c'. Streaming the request is not addressed in this patch. 2. A new field 'unrecognized' has been added to object_info. This new field is set at fetch_object_info() when the object is unrecognized by the server. 2026-07-22remote: find tracking branches for URL push destinationsHarald Nordgren1-1/+4
Git accepts a repository URL as branch.<name>.pushRemote and can push to it. This branch setting takes precedence over remote.pushDefault. A branch can be configured with a URL-valued pushRemote before any push occurs. If the remotes are later rearranged with "git remote rename" and "git remote add", the newly added remote may use that URL. The URL value is unaffected by the rename and continues to take precedence over remote.pushDefault. The URL and the remote then point to the same repository, but Git does not connect them for tracking. Pushing works, but @{push} cannot identify the remote's tracking branch. As a result, "git status" cannot show the push branch, and an up-to-date push can leave its tracking information stale. When exactly one configured remote would push to the same URL, use that remote for push tracking. Continue to push to the URL so the configured remote's push settings do not change existing behavior. When negotiationRestrict is configured, it replaces the default behavior of using all remote refs as negotiation tips. This allows the user to control which local refs are used for push negotiation. 2026-05-20fetch: add --negotiation-include option for negotiationDerrick Stolee1-1/+7
Add a new --negotiation-include option to 'git fetch', which ensures that certain ref tips are always sent as 'have' lines during fetch negotiation, regardless of what the negotiation algorithm selects. This is useful when the repository has a large number of references, so the normal negotiation algorithm truncates the list. This is especially important in repositories with long parallel commit histories. For example, a repo could have a 'dev' branch for development and a 'release' branch for released versions. If the 'dev' branch isn't selected for negotiation, then it's not a big deal because there are many in-progress development branches with a shared history. However, if 'release' is not selected for negotiation, then the server may think that this is the first time the client has asked for that reference, causing a full download of its parallel commit history (and any extra data that may be unique to that branch). This is based on a real example where certain fetches would grow to 60+ GB when a release branch updated. This option is a complement to --negotiation-restrict, which reduces the negotiation ref set to a specific list. In the earlier example, using --negotiation-restrict to focus the negotiation to 'dev' and 'release' would avoid those problematic downloads, but would still not allow advertising potentially-relevant user branches. In this way, the 'include' version solves the problem I mention while allowing negotiation to pick other references opportunistically. The two options can also be combined to allow the best of both worlds. The argument may be an exact ref name or a glob pattern. Non-existent refs are silently ignored. This behavior is also updated in the ref matching logic for the related --negotiation-restrict option to match. The implementation outputs the requested objects as haves before the negotiator performs its own algorithm to choose the next haves. Use the new have_sent() interface to signal these have commits were sent before engaging with the negotiator's next() iterator. Also add --negotiation-include to 'git pull' passthrough options. The previous change added the --negotiation-restrict synonym for the --negotiation-tip option for 'git fetch'. In anticipation of adding a new option that behaves similarly but with distinct changes to its behavior, rename the internal representation of this data from 'negotiation_tips' to 'negotiation_restrict_tips'. The 'tips' part is kept because this is an oid_array in the transport layer. This requires the builtin to handle parsing refs into collections of oids so the transport layer can handle this cleaner form of the data. Also update the string_list used to store the inputs from command-line options. 2026-05-19connect: use "service" enum for "name" argumentJeff King1-6/+8
The git_connect() function takes a "name" argument which is a bit confusing. It is _not_ the program to run on the remote repo, which is specified by the "prog" argument. It should instead be one of a few well-known strings specifying the type of operation (e.g., "git-upload-pack"). But to add to the confusion, unless otherwise configured, those well-known strings will also be the same as the programs we run, making it easy to mistake which variable is which. This confusion comes from eaa0fd6584 (git_connect(): fix corner cases in downgrading v2 to v0, 2023-03-17), though in its defense, the term "name" and the use of a string are found in other connect code, going all the way back to b236752a87 (Support remote archive from all smart transports, 2009-12-09). But let's see if we can clean things up a bit. The term "name" is overly vague. We use "service" in other places, including in the smart-http protocol, so let's use it here, too. Using a string invites the notion that it can be anything, not one of a defined set. Let's instead introduce an enum, which has the added bonus that the compiler can catch typos for us, rather than quietly choosing the wrong service from an unexpected strcmp() result. We do still have to turn our enum into those well-known strings to pass along in the remote-helper protocol (e.g., for a stateless-connect directive). But now we do so explicitly and in a way that I think is much more obvious to follow. This is a pure cleanup; there should be no behavior change. 2026-04-10hook: allow pre-push parallel executionAdrian Ratiu1-2/+4
pre-push is the only hook that keeps stdout and stderr separate (for backwards compatibility with git-lfs and potentially other users). This prevents parallelizing it because run-command needs stdout_to_stderr=1 to buffer and de-interleave parallel outputs. Since we now default to jobs=1, backwards compatibility is maintained without needing any extension or extra config: when no parallelism is requested, pre-push behaves exactly as before. When the user explicitly opts into parallelism via hook.jobs > 1, hook.<event>.jobs > 1, or -jN, they accept the changed output behavior. Document this and let get_hook_jobs() set stdout_to_stderr=1 automatically when jobs > 1, removing the need for any extension infrastructure. We retrieve config values with repo_config_get_string(), which will allocate a new copy of the string for us. But we don't hold on to those strings, since they are just fed to git_config_colorbool() and color_parse(). But nor do we free them, which means they leak. We can fix this by using the "_tmp" form of repo_config_get_string(), which just hands us a pointer directly to the internal storage. This is OK for our purposes, since we don't need it to last for longer than our parsing calls. Two interesting side notes here: 1. Many types already have a repo_config_get_X() variant that handles this for us (e.g., repo_config_get_bool()). But neither colorbools nor colors themselves have such helpers. We might think about adding them, but converting all callers is a larger task, and out of scope for this fix. 2. As far as I can tell, this leak has been there since 960786e761 (push: colorize errors, 2018-04-21), but wasn't detected by LSan in our test suite. It started triggering when we applied dd3693eb08 (transport-helper, connect: use clean_on_exit to reap children on abnormal exit, 2026-03-12) which is mostly unrelated. Even weirder, it seems to trigger only with clang (and not gcc), and only with GIT_TEST_DEFAULT_REF_FORMAT=reftable. So I think this is another odd case where the pointers happened to be hanging around in stack memory, but changing the pattern of function calls in nearby code was enough for them to be incidentally overwritten. 2026-03-06sideband: offer to configure sanitizing on a per-URL basisJohannes Schindelin1-0/+3
The main objection against sanitizing the sideband that was raised during the review of the sideband sanitizing patches, first on the git-security mailing list, then on the public mailing list, was that there are some setups where server-side `pre-receive` hooks want to error out, giving colorful messages to the users on the client side (if they are not redirecting the output into a file, that is). To avoid breaking such setups, the default chosen by the sideband sanitizing patches is to pass through ANSI color sequences. Still, there might be some use case out there where that is not enough. Therefore the `sideband.allowControlCharacters` config setting allows for configuring levels of sanitizing. As Junio Hamano pointed out, to keep users safe by default, we need to be able to scope this to some servers because while a user may trust their company's Git server, the same might not apply to other Git servers. To allow for this, let's imitate the way `http.<url>.*` offers to scope config settings to certain URLs, by letting users override the `sideband.allowControlCharacters` setting via `sideband.<url>.allowControlCharacters`. Because hooks ran sequentially (jobs == 1) with one command per hook, these internal states could be allocated on the stack for each hook run. Next commits add the ability to run multiple commands for each hook, so the states cannot be shared or stored on the stack anymore, especially since down the line we will also enable parallel execution (jobs > 1). Add alloc/free helpers for each hook, doing a "deep" alloc/init & free of their internal opaque struct. The alloc callback takes a context pointer, to initialize the struct at at the time of resource acquisition. These callbacks must always be provided together: no alloc without free and no free without alloc, otherwise a BUG() is triggered. Previous commits have set up an infrastructure for `--filter=auto` to automatically prepare a partial clone filter based on what the server advertised and the client accepted. Using that infrastructure, let's now enable the `--filter=auto` option in `git clone` and `git fetch` by setting `allow_auto_filter` to 1. Note that these small changes mean that when `git clone --filter=auto` or `git fetch --filter=auto` are used, "auto" is automatically saved as the partial clone filter for the server on the client. Therefore subsequent calls to `git fetch` on the client will automatically use this "auto" mode even without `--filter=auto`. Let's also set `allow_auto_filter` to 1 in `transport.c`, as the transport layer must be able to accept the "auto" filter spec even if the invoking command hasn't fully parsed it yet. When an "auto" filter is requested, let's have the "fetch-pack.c" code in `do_fetch_pack_v2()` compute a filter and send it to the server. In `do_fetch_pack_v2()` the logic also needs to check for the "promisor-remote" capability and call `promisor_remote_reply()` to parse advertised remotes and populate the list of those accepted (and their filters). We traditionally used "int" to store and pass around the values defined by "enum git_colorbool" (which were originally just #define macros). Using an int doesn't produce incorrect results, but using the actual enum makes the intent of the code more clear. It would be nice if the compiler could catch cases where we used the enum and an int interchangeably, since it's very easy to accidentally check the boolean true/false of a colorbool like: if (branch_use_color) This is wrong because GIT_COLOR_UNKNOWN and GIT_COLOR_AUTO evaluate to true in C, even though we may ultimately decide not to use color. But C is pretty happy to convert between ints and enums (even with various -Wenum-* warnings). So this sadly doesn't protect us from such mistakes, but it hopefully does make the code easier to read. Long ago Git's decision to show color for a subsytem was stored in a tri-state variable: it could be true (1), false (0), or unknown (-1). But since daa0c3d971 (color: delay auto-color decision until point of use, 2011-08-17) we want to carry around a new state, "auto", which bases the decision on the tty-ness of stdout (rather than collapsing that "auto" state to a true/false immediately). That commit introduced a set of GIT_COLOR_* defines to represent each state: UNKNOWN, ALWAYS, NEVER, and AUTO. But it only used the AUTO value, and left alone code using bare 0/1/-1 values. And of course since then we've grown many new spots that use those bare values. Let's switch all of these to use the named constants. That should make the code a bit easier to read, as it is more obvious that we're representing a color decision. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. Patrick reported an issue that the exit code of git-receive-pack(1) is ignored during atomic push with "--porcelain" flag, and added new test cases in t5543. This issue originated from commit 7dcbeaa0df (send-pack: fix inconsistent porcelain output, 2020-04-17). At that time, I chose to ignore the exit code of "finish_connect()" without investigating the root cause of the abnormal termination of git-receive-pack. That was an incorrect solution. The root cause is that an atomic push operation terminates early without sending a flush packet to git-receive-pack. As a result, git-receive-pack continues waiting for commands without exiting. By sending a flush packet at the appropriate location in "send_pack()", we ensure that the git-receive-pack process closes properly, avoiding an erroneous exit code for git-push. At the same time, revert the changes to the "transport.c" file made in commit 7dcbeaa0df. The "push_refs" function in the transport_vtable is the handler for git-push operation. All the "push_refs" functions for different transports (protocols) should have the same behavior, but the behavior of "git_transport_push()" function for builtin_smart_vtable in "transport.c" (which calls "send_pack()" in "send-pack.c") differs from the handler of the HTTP protocol. The "push_refs()" function for the HTTP protocol which calls the "push_refs_with_push()" function in "transport-helper.c" will return 0 even when a bad REF_STATUS (such as REF_STATUS_REJECT_NONFASTFORWARD) was found. But "send_pack()" for Git smart protocol will return -1 for a bad REF_STATUS. We cannot ignore bad REF_STATUS directly in the "send_pack()" function, because the function is also used in "builtin/send-pack.c". So we add a new non-zero error code "SEND_PACK_ERROR_REF_STATUS" for "send_pack()". Ignore the specific error code in the "git_transport_push()" function to have the same behavior as "push_refs()" for HTTP protocol. Note that even though we ignore the error here, we'll ultimately still end up detecting that a subset of refs was not pushed in `transport_push()` because we eventually call `push_had_errors()` on the remote refs. 2025-01-25bundle: avoid closing file descriptor twiceJohannes Schindelin1-0/+1
Already when introduced in c7a8a16239 (Add bundle transport, 2007-09-10), the `bundle` transport had a bug where it would open a file descriptor to the bundle file and then close it _twice_: First, the file descriptor (`data->fd`) is passed to `unbundle()`, which would use it as the `stdin` of the `index-pack` process, which as a consequence would close it via `start_command()`. However, `data->fd` would still hold the numerical value of the file descriptor, and `close_bundle()` would see that and happily close it again. This seems not to have caused too many problems in almost two decades, but I encountered a situation today where it _does_ cause problems: In i686 variants of Git for Windows, it seems that file descriptors are reused quickly after they have been closed. In the particular scenario I faced, `git fetch <bundle> <ref>` gets the same file descriptor value when opening the bundle file and importing its embedded packfile (which implicitly closes the file descriptor) and then when opening a pack file in `fetch_and_consume_refs()` while looking up an object's header. Later on, after the bundle has been imported (and the `close_bundle()` function erroneously closes the file descriptor that has _already_ been closed when using it as `stdin` for `git index-pack`), the same file descriptor value has now been reused via `use_pack()`. Now, when either the recursive fetch (which defaults to "on", unfortunately) or a commit-graph update needs to `mmap()` the packfile, it fails due to a now-invalid file descriptor that _should_ point to the pack file but doesn't anymore. To fix that, let's invalidate `data->fd` after calling `unbundle()`. That way, `close_bundle()` does not close a file descriptor that may have been reused for something different. While at it, document that `unbundle()` closes the file descriptor, and ensure that it also does that when failing to verify the bundle. Luckily, this bug does not affect the bundle URI feature, it only affects the `git fetch <bundle>` code path. Note that this patch does not _completely_ clarifies who is responsible to close that file descriptor, as `run_command()` may fail _without_ closing `cmd->in`. Addressing this issue thoroughly, however, would require a rather thorough re-design of the `start_command()` and `finish_command()` functionality to make it a lot less murky who is responsible for what file descriptors. At least this here patch is relatively easy to reason about, and addresses a hard failure (`fatal: mmap: could not determine filesize`) at the expense of leaking a file descriptor under very rare circumstances in which `git fetch` would error out anyway.
