2026-08-15Merge branch 'kl/t7528-ssh-agent-for-csh-users'Junio C Hamano1-1/+1
The 'ssh-agent' tests in 't7528' have been fixed to work when the user's login shell is csh-like, by explicitly passing '-s' to 'ssh-agent' to force Bourne shell syntax. * kl/t7528-ssh-agent-for-csh-users: t7528: fix failure under csh
2026-08-03t7528: fix failure under cshKenneth Lorber1-1/+1
Explicitly set sh mode for ssh-agent (ssh-agent -s) to prevent failure when user's login shell is csh-like. The failure is caused by propagation of the $SHELL value from the user's original shell despite the test and test harness explictly using sh, which makes ssh-agent emit initialization code for the wrong shell: > cd t > echo $SHELL /bin/tcsh > ./t7528-signed-commit-ssh.sh --verbose --debug [...] expecting success of 7528.2 'sign commits using literal public keys with ssh-agent': [...] ./t7528-signed-commit-ssh.sh: 1: eval: setenv: not found ./t7528-signed-commit-ssh.sh: 1: eval: setenv: not found [...] Signed-off-by: Kenneth Lorber <keni@his.com> Acked-by: brian m. carlson <sandals@crustytoothpaste.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2026-07-06t: convert grep assertions to test_grepMichael Montalbo1-34/+34
Replace bare grep with test_grep in test assertions across the suite, including sourced test helpers (lib-*.sh, *-tests.sh). test_grep prints the contents of the file being searched on failure, making debugging easier than a bare grep which fails silently. Only assertion-style greps are converted: grep used as a filter in pipelines, command substitutions, conditionals, or with redirected I/O is left as-is with a "# lint-ok" annotation. Existing '! test_grep' calls are rewritten to 'test_grep !' so that the diagnostic output is preserved on failure. test_grep requires the file it reads to exist, so '! grep' assertions that inspect a file whose presence is conditional need care. In t5537 the '.git/shallow' file is still present after the repack (the client remains shallow), so the assertion is converted like any other. In t1400 the '.git/packed-refs' file exists only with the files backend, so its check is guarded with a REFFILES prerequisite; the backend-agnostic 'git show-ref' check that follows still runs under every backend. In t7450 'git~2' is the NTFS 8.3 short name of a '..git' file and only exists when 8.3 short-name generation is enabled, so its check is guarded with a 'test -f' on the path and uses test_grep inside the guard, the same shape as t1400 (a plain test_grep would BUG when the short name is absent). The conversion was generated using a grep-assertion linter (greplint.pl, added in the following commit) to identify bare grep calls at command position. To reproduce, from the t/ directory: # Step 1: annotate the two data-filter greps (grep produces # data, not a verdict) so the linter skips them. sed -i '/grep -vf before commits\.raw/s/$/ # lint-ok: data filter/' \ t5326-multi-pack-bitmaps.sh sed -i '/grep -E "^\[0-9a-f\].*|| :/s/$/ # lint-ok: data filter/' \ t5702-protocol-v2.sh # Step 1b: two '! grep' assertions need more than a mechanical # conversion; handle them by hand before the linter-driven steps # below so it leaves them alone. # # t1400: '.git/packed-refs' is absent under reftable, so guard the # check with REFFILES (a plain test_grep would BUG on the missing # file): # # git update-ref -d HEAD $B && # - ! grep "$m" .git/packed-refs && # + if test_have_prereq REFFILES # + then # + test_grep ! "$m" .git/packed-refs # + fi && # test_must_fail git show-ref --verify -q $m # # t7450: git~2 is an NTFS 8.3 short name that exists only when # short-name generation is enabled, so guard the check on its # presence with 'test -f' and note in a comment why the path can # be absent (a plain test_grep would BUG when it is): # # - ! grep gitdir squatting-clone/d/a/git~2 # + if test -f squatting-clone/d/a/git~2 # + then # + test_grep ! gitdir squatting-clone/d/a/git~2 # + fi # Step 2: reorder pre-existing '! test_grep' to 'test_grep !' # (must come before steps 3-4 so greplint does not see them) sed -i 's/! test_grep/test_grep !/' t0031-lockfile-pid.sh sed -i 's/! test_grep/test_grep !/' t5300-pack-object.sh sed -i 's/! test_grep/test_grep !/' t5319-multi-pack-index.sh # Step 3: convert '! grep' -> 'test_grep !' perl greplint.pl *.sh 2>&1 | cut -d: -f1,2 | while IFS=: read f l; do sed -i "${l}s/! *grep/test_grep !/" "$f" done # Step 4: convert remaining 'grep' -> 'test_grep' perl greplint.pl *.sh 2>&1 | cut -d: -f1,2 | while IFS=: read f l; do sed -i "${l}s/grep/test_grep/" "$f" done To verify, run: make -C t test-greplint Signed-off-by: Michael Montalbo <mmontalbo@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2025-10-23t7528: work around ETOOMANY in OpenSSH 10.1 and newerPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
In t7528 we spawn an SSH agent to verify that we can sign a commit via it. This test has started to fail on some machines: +++ ssh-agent unix_listener_tmp: path "/home/pks/Development/git/build/test-output/trash directory.t7528-signed-commit-ssh/.ssh/agent/s.UTulegefEg.agent.UrPHumMXPq" too long for Unix domain socket main: Couldn't prepare agent socket As it turns out this is caused by a change in OpenSSH 10.1 [1]: * ssh-agent(1), sshd(8): move agent listener sockets from /tmp to under ~/.ssh/agent for both ssh-agent(1) and forwarded sockets in sshd(8). Instead of creating the socket in "/tmp", OpenSSH now creates the socket in our home directory. And as the home directory gets modified to be located in our test output directory we end up with paths that are somewhat long. But Linux has a rather short limit of 108 characters for socket paths, and other systems have even lower limits, so it is very easy now to exceed the limit and run into the above error. Work around the issue by using `ssh-agent -T`, which instructs it to use the old behaviour and create the socket in "/tmp" again. This switch has only been introduced with 10.1 though, so for older versions we have to fall back to not using it. That's fine though, as older versions know to put the socket into "/tmp" already. An alternative approach would be to abbreviate the socket name itself so that we create it as e.g. "sshsock" in the trash directory. But taking the above example we'd still end up with a path that is 91 characters long. So we wouldn't really have a lot of headroom, and it is quite likely that some developers would see the issue on their machines. 2025-07-07ssh signing: don't detach the filename strbuf from key_file tempfileredoste1-12/+20
Detaching the filename string from the tempfile structure used to cause delete_tempfile() to fail and the temporary file was not cleaned up. While it's possible to get rid of the allocation and copy from xstrdup(), it keeps the code symetric with the other branch since interpolate_path() also allocates and ssh_signing_key_file is freed in both cases. The exisiting test was updated to check if the temporary files are properly deleted. To prevent TMPDIR from leaking into the other tests, a new subshell is created, however this prevents test_config from working. The cleanup of the config changed in the subshell is done by test_unconfig in a call to test_when_finished outside of it. 2023-01-18t: use hash-object --literally when created malformed objectsJeff King1-1/+1
Many test scripts use hash-object to create malformed objects to see how we handle the results in various commands. In some cases we already have to use "hash-object --literally", because it does some rudimentary quality checks. But let's use "--literally" more consistently to future-proof these tests against hash-object learning to be more careful. 2021-12-21Merge branch 'fs/ssh-signing-other-keytypes'Junio C Hamano1-2/+24
The cryptographic signing using ssh keys can specify literal keys for keytypes whose name do not begin with the "ssh-" prefix by using the "key::" prefix mechanism (e.g. "key::ecdsa-sha2-nistp256"). * fs/ssh-signing-other-keytypes: ssh signing: make sign/amend test more resilient ssh signing: support non ssh-* keytypes
2021-12-09ssh signing: make verify-commit consider key lifetimeFabian Stelzer1-0/+42
If valid-before/after dates are configured for this signatures key in the allowedSigners file then the verification should check if the key was valid at the time the commit was made. This allows for graceful key rollover and revoking keys without invalidating all previous commits. This feature needs openssh > 8.8. Older ssh-keygen versions will simply ignore this flag and use the current time. Strictly speaking this feature is available in 8.7, but since 8.7 has a bug that makes it unusable in another needed call we require 8.8. Timestamp information is present on most invocations of check_signature. However signer ident is not. We will need the signer email / name to be able to implement "Trust on first use" functionality later. Since the payload contains all necessary information we can parse it from there. The caller only needs to provide us some info about the payload by setting payload_type in the signature_check struct. - Add payload_type field & enum and payload_timestamp to struct signature_check - Populate the timestamp when not already set if we know about the payload type - Pass -Overify-time={payload_timestamp} in the users timezone to all ssh-keygen verification calls - Set the payload type when verifying commits - Add tests for expired, not yet valid and keys having a commit date outside of key validity as well as within Signed-off-by: Fabian Stelzer <fs@gigacodes.de> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2021-11-19ssh signing: make sign/amend test more resilientFabian Stelzer1-1/+1
The test `amending already signed commit` is using git checkout to select a specific commit to amend. In case an earlier test fails and leaves behind a dirty index/worktree this test would fail as well. Using `checkout -f` will avoid interference by most other tests. 2021-11-19ssh signing: support non ssh-* keytypesFabian Stelzer1-1/+23
The user.signingKey config for ssh signing supports either a path to a file containing the key or for the sake of convenience a literal string with the ssh public key. To differentiate between those two cases we check if the first few characters contain "ssh-" which is unlikely to be the start of a path. ssh supports other key types which are not prefixed with "ssh-" and will currently be treated as a file path and therefore fail to load. To remedy this we move the prefix check into its own function and introduce the prefix `key::` for literal ssh keys. This way we don't need to add new key types when they become available. The existing `ssh-` prefix is retained for compatibility with current user configs but removed from the official documentation to discourage its use.
