2026-07-15diff: ignore unmerged paths outside prefix with --relative --cachedJeff King1-0/+9
A diff using --relative ignores entries outside the current directory. This results in a segfault when we try to process an unmerged entry that's outside of our prefix, since we end up with a NULL diff_filepair and use it without checking that it's valid. I think this bug goes back to 76399c0195 (diff.c: return filepair from diff_unmerge(), 2011-04-22). Prior to that, diff_unmerge() knew to skip entries outside of our prefix, due to cd676a5136 (diff --relative: output paths as relative to the current subdirectory, 2008-02-12). Back then the caller didn't care that we hadn't added anything to the queue. In 76399c0195 that changed; we now returned the pair (or NULL), and the caller in do_oneway_diff() was then called fill_filespec() itself. And it does so without checking for NULL, causing a segfault. The obvious fix is to skip the fill_filespec() call (after which we just return), which this patch does. There's another call to diff_unmerge() in run_diff_files(). That case was already fixed by 8174627b3d (diff-lib: ignore paths that are outside $cwd if --relative asked, 2021-08-22), but of course it didn't help us for --cached. That commit also claims that checking the result of diff_unmerge() is not enough, as we'd want other code paths to skip the entry, too (even if they wouldn't segfault). But as far as I can tell, that is not true for --cached. We eventually end up in diff_queue_addremove() or in diff_queue_change(), both of which know to return early when we're outside of the prefix. Arguably we could be checking at the top of oneway_diff() whether the path is interesting at all. That would not only avoid this code path entirely, but would also possibly save a small amount of work. But since everything else appears to work OK, I went for the smallest fix here to avoid any regression. Specifically, a comment in oneway_diff() claims we're supposed to advance o->pos, which we might fail to do if we return early. Though that "advance" seems to have gone away in da165f470e (unpack-trees.c: prepare for looking ahead in the index, 2010-01-07), so it is possible the comment is simply out of date. We can explore that separately; checking for a NULL return from diff_unmerge() seems like a sensible thing to do regardless. We can piggy-back on the tests added by 8174627b3d; we're just checking the --cached variant. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2023-01-16Merge branch 'jk/ext-diff-with-relative'Junio C Hamano1-0/+29
"git diff --relative" did not mix well with "git diff --ext-diff", which has been corrected. * jk/ext-diff-with-relative: diff: drop "name" parameter from prepare_temp_file() diff: clean up external-diff argv setup diff: use filespec path to set up tempfiles for ext-diff
2023-01-06diff: use filespec path to set up tempfiles for ext-diffJeff King1-0/+29
When we're going to run an external diff, we have to make the contents of the pre- and post-images available either by dumping them to a tempfile, or by pointing at a valid file in the worktree. The logic of this is all handled by prepare_temp_file(), and we just pass in the filename and the diff_filespec. But there's a gotcha here. The "filename" we have is a logical filename and not necessarily a path on disk or in the repository. This matters in at least one case: when using "--relative", we may have a name like "foo", even though the file content is found at "subdir/foo". As a result, we look for the wrong path, fail to find "foo", and claim that the file has been deleted (passing "/dev/null" to the external diff, rather than the correct worktree path). We can fix this by passing the pathname from the diff_filespec, which should always be a full repository path (and that's what we want even if reusing a worktree file, since we're always operating from the top-level of the working tree). The breakage seems to go all the way back to cd676a5136 (diff --relative: output paths as relative to the current subdirectory, 2008-02-12). As far as I can tell, before then "name" would always have been the same as the filespec's "path". There are two related cases I looked at that aren't buggy: 1. the only other caller of prepare_temp_file() is run_textconv(). But it always passes the filespec's path field, so it's OK. 2. I wondered if file renames/copies might cause similar confusion. But they don't, because run_external_diff() receives two names in that case: "name" and "other", which correspond to the two sides of the diff. And we did correctly pass "other" when handling the post-image side. Barring the use of "--relative", that would always match "two->path", the path of the second filespec (and the rename destination). So the only bug is just the interaction with external diff drivers and --relative. 2022-11-21commit: discard partial cache before (re-)reading itÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-0/+2
The read_cache() in prepare_to_commit() would end up clobbering the pointer we had for a previously populated "the_index.cache_tree" in the very common case of "git commit" stressed by e.g. the tests being changed here. We'd populate "the_index.cache_tree" by calling "update_main_cache_tree" in prepare_index(), but would not end up with a "fully prepared" index. What constitutes an existing index is clearly overly fuzzy, here we'll check "active_nr" (aka "the_index.cache_nr"), but our "the_index.cache_tree" might have been malloc()'d already. Thus the code added in 11c8a74a64a (commit: write cache-tree data when writing index anyway, 2011-12-06) would end up allocating the "cache_tree", and would interact here with code added in 7168624c353 (Do not generate full commit log message if it is not going to be used, 2007-11-28). The result was a very common memory leak. Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Taylor Blau <me@ttaylorr.com>
2021-09-08Merge branch 'dd/diff-files-unmerged-fix'Junio C Hamano1-0/+53
"git diff --relative" segfaulted and/or produced incorrect result when there are unmerged paths. * dd/diff-files-unmerged-fix: diff-lib: ignore paths that are outside $cwd if --relative asked
2021-08-25diff-lib: ignore paths that are outside $cwd if --relative askedĐoàn Trần Công Danh1-0/+53
For diff family commands, we can tell them to exclude changes outside of some directories if --relative is requested. In diff_unmerge(), NULL will be returned if the requested path is outside of the interesting directories, thus we'll run into NULL pointer dereference in run_diff_files when trying to dereference its return value. Checking for return value of diff_unmerge before dereferencing is not sufficient, though. Since, diff engine will try to work on such pathspec later. Let's not run diff on those unintesting entries, instead. As a side effect, by skipping like that, we can save some CPU cycles. 2021-02-10tests: remove most uses of test_i18ncmpÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-1/+1
As a follow-up to d162b25f956 (tests: remove support for GIT_TEST_GETTEXT_POISON, 2021-01-20) remove most uses of test_i18ncmp via a simple s/test_i18ncmp/test_cmp/g search-replacement. I'm leaving t6300-for-each-ref.sh out due to a conflict with in-flight changes between "master" and "seen", as well as the prerequisite itself due to other changes between "master" and "next/seen" which add new test_i18ncmp uses. 2012-04-30diff --stat: use less columns for change countsZbigniew Jędrzejewski-Szmek1-1/+1
Number of columns required for change counts is now computed based on the maximum number of changed lines instead of being fixed. This means that usually a few more columns will be available for the filenames and the graph. The graph width logic is also modified to include enough space for "Bin XXX -> YYY bytes". If changes to binary files are mixed with changes to text files, change counts are padded to take at least three columns. And the other way around, if change counts require more than three columns, then "Bin"s are padded to align with the change count. This way, the +- part starts in the same column as "XXX -> YYY" part for binary files. This makes the graph easier to parse visually thanks to the empty column. This mimics the layout of diff --stat before this change. Tests and the tutorial are updated to reflect the new --stat output. This means either the removal of extra padding and/or the addition of up to three extra characters to truncated filenames. One test is added to check the graph alignment when a binary file change and text file change of more than 999 lines are committed together. "git diff --stat" and "git apply --stat" now learn to print the line "%d files changed, %d insertions(+), %d deletions(-)" in singular form whenever applicable. "0 insertions" and "0 deletions" are also omitted unless they are both zero. This matches how versions of "diffstat" that are not prehistoric produced their output, and also makes this line translatable. 2010-08-11diff: strip extra "/" when stripping prefixJakub Narebski1-0/+61
There are two ways a user might want to use "diff --relative": 1. For a file in a directory, like "subdir/file", the user can use "--relative=subdir/" to strip the directory. 2. To strip part of a filename, like "foo-10", they can use "--relative=foo-". We currently handle both of those situations. However, if the user passes "--relative=subdir" (without the trailing slash), we produce inconsistent results. For the unified diff format, we collapse the double-slash of "a//file" correctly into "a/file". But for other formats (raw, stat, name-status), we end up with "/file". We can do what the user means here and strip the extra "/" (and only a slash). We are not hurting any existing users of (2) above with this behavior change because the existing output for this case was nonsensical. Patch by Jakub, tests and commit message by Jeff King.
