2026-08-11fast-import: use struct option for usage stringChristian Couder1-1/+0
Currently `git fast-import -h` shows the following on a single line: usage : git fast-import [--date-format=<f>] [--max-pack-size=<n>] \ [--big-file-threshold=<n>] [--depth=<n>] \ [--active-branches=<n>] \ [--export-marks=<marks.file>] This output has a number of issues like: - It's missing a lot of options. - It's not consistent with the SYNOPSIS section of the doc. - With `--help-all` instead of `-h` additional hidden options should be shown, but that's not the case. - It's not standard style anymore. - Most other Git commands show additional lines for most of the options they support. Also while most commands use the parse-options API to handle their options, "builtin/fast-import.c" still doesn't use it. Let's improve on that by using the parse-options API to display the options when `-h` and `--help-all` are used. While at it, let's make the SYNOPSIS section of "Documentation/git-fast-import.adoc" consistent with the new usage string. This deliberately leaves it to future work to also use the parse-options API to actually parse the options. 2026-07-13fast-export: standardize usage string and SYNOPSISChristian Couder1-1/+0
The output of `git fast-export -h` currently starts with: usage: git fast-export [<rev-list-opts>] while the SYNOPSIS section in this command's documentation shows: 'git fast-export' [<options>] | 'git fast-import' Let's make both of these consistent with each other and with other Git commands by describing the arguments with: [<options>] [<revision-range>] [[--] <path>...] This takes into account the following: - `git fast-export` accepts both rev-list arguments and a number of genuine options of its own (--[no-]progress, --[no-]signed-tags, --[no-]signed-commits, etc). - `git fast-export` was the only command using `[<rev-list-opts>]` while many other commands describe their revision arguments as `[<revision-range>] [[--] <path>...]`. - In the DESCRIPTION section of the documentation, it's already mentioned several times that the output should eventually be fed to `git fast-import`. This also enables us to remove fast-export from "t/t0450/adoc-help-mismatches". Signed-off-by: Christian Couder <chriscool@tuxfamily.org> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2026-02-24git-multi-pack-index(1): align SYNOPSIS with 'git multi-pack-index -h'Taylor Blau1-1/+0
Since c39fffc1c90 (tests: start asserting that *.txt SYNOPSIS matches -h output, 2022-10-13), the manual page for 'git multi-pack-index' has a SYNOPSIS section which differs from 'git multi-pack-index -h'. Correct this while also documenting additional options accepted by the 'write' sub-command. Signed-off-by: Taylor Blau <me@ttaylorr.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2025-10-28bisect: update usage and docs to match each otherRuoyu Zhong1-1/+0
Update the usage string of `git bisect` and documentation to match each other. While at it, also: 1. Move the synopsis of `git bisect` subcommands to the synopsis section, so that the test `t0450-txt-doc-vs-help.sh` can pass. 2. Document the `git bisect next` subcommand, which exists in the code but is missing from the documentation. See also: [1]. 2025-09-12Merge branch 'tc/t0450-harden'Junio C Hamano1-0/+9

2025-09-03t0450: add allowlist for builtins with missing .adocToon Claes1-0/+9
Before we were silently skipping all builtins that don't have a matching .adoc file. This is overly loose and might skip documentation files when it shouldn't, for example when there was a typo in the filename. To ensure no new builtins are added without documentation, add an allowlist: t0450/adoc-missing. In this file only builtin commands that do *not* have a corresponding .adoc file shall be listed. If there is a mismatch, fail the test. This should force future contributions to either add an .adoc, or add the builtin name to the allowlist file. 2025-08-05builtin/for-each-ref: align usage string with the man pageMeet Soni1-1/+0
Usage string for `git for-each-ref` was out of sync with its official documentation. The test `t0450-txt-doc-vs-help.sh` was marked as broken due to this. Update the usage string to match the documentation. This allows the test to pass, so remove the corresponding 'known breakage' marker from the test file. 2025-05-16pack-objects: update usage to match docsDerrick Stolee1-1/+0
The t0450 test script verifies that builtin usage matches the synopsis in the documentation. Adjust the builtin to match and then remove 'git pack-objects' from the exception list. Signed-off-by: Derrick Stolee <stolee@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2025-03-03t0450: *.txt -> *.adoc fixesTodd Zullinger1-0/+0
After 1f010d6bdf (doc: use .adoc extension for AsciiDoc files, 2025-01-20), we no longer matched any files in this test. The result is that we did not test for mismatches in the documentation and --help output. Adjust the test to look at the renamed *.adoc files. 2025-01-27repack: add --name-hash-version optionDerrick Stolee1-1/+0
The new '--name-hash-version' option for 'git repack' is a simple pass-through to the underlying 'git pack-objects' subcommand. However, this subcommand may have other options and a temporary filename as part of the subcommand execution that may not be predictable or could change over time. The existing test_subcommand method requires an exact list of arguments for the subcommand. This is too rigid for our needs here, so create a new method, test_subcommand_flex. Use it to check that the --name-hash-version option is passing through. Since we are modifying the 'git repack' command, let's bring its usage in line with the Documentation's synopsis. This removes it from the allow list in t0450 so it will remain in sync in the future. Signed-off-by: Derrick Stolee <stolee@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2024-05-06builtin/config: display subcommand helpPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+0
Until now, `git config -h` would have printed help for the old-style syntax. Now that all modes have proper subcommands though it is preferable to instead display the subcommand help. Drop the `NO_INTERNAL_HELP` flag to do so. While at it, drop the help mismatch in t0450 and add the `--get-colorbool` option to the usage such that git-config(1)'s synopsis and `git config -h` match. 2022-10-13tests: start asserting that *.txt SYNOPSIS matches -h outputÆvar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-0/+58
There's been a lot of incremental effort to make the SYNOPSIS output in our documentation consistent with the -h output, e.g. cbe485298bf (git reflog [expire|delete]: make -h output consistent with SYNOPSIS, 2022-03-17) is one recent example, but that effort has been an uphill battle due to the lack of regression testing. This adds such regression testing, we can parse out the SYNOPSIS output with "sed", and it turns out it's relatively easy to normalize it and the "-h" output to match on another. We now ensure that we won't have regressions when it comes to the list of commands in "expect_help_to_match_txt" below, and in subsequent commits we'll make more of them consistent. The naïve parser here gets quite a few things wrong, but it doesn't need to be perfect, just good enough that we can compare /some/ of this help output. There's no cases where the output would match except for the parser's stupidity, it's all cases of e.g. comparing the *.txt to non-parse_options() output. Since that output is wildly different than the *.txt anyway let's leave this for now, we can fix the parser some other time, or it won't become necessary as we'll e.g. convert more things to using parse_options(). Having a special-case for "merge-tree"'s 1f0c3a29da3 (merge-tree: implement real merges, 2022-06-18) is a bit ugly, but preferred to blessing that " (deprecated)" pattern for other commands. We'd probably want to add some other way of marking deprecated commands in the SYNOPSIS syntax. Syntactically 1f0c3a29da3's way of doing it is indistinguishable from the command taking an optional literal "deprecated" string as an argument. Some of the issues that are left: * "git show -h", "git whatchanged -h" and "git reflog --oneline -h" all showing "git log" and "git show" usage output. I.e. the "builtin_log_usage" in builtin/log.c doesn't take into account what command we're running. * Commands which implement subcommands such as like "multi-pack-index", "notes", "remote" etc. having their subcommands in a very different order in the *.txt and *.c. Fixing it would require some verbose diffs, so it's been left alone for now. * Commands such as "format-patch" have a very long argument list in the *.txt, but just "[<options>]" in the *.c. What to do about these has been left out of this series, except to the extent that preceding commits changed "[<options>]" (or equivalent) to the list of options in cases where that list of options was tiny, or we clearly meant to exhaustively list the options in both *.txt and *.c.
