2026-08-28worktree repair: detect relative path in .git file correctlyYoichi NAKAYAMA1-0/+1
Given a state in which the cross-references between the worktree and the repository (specifically worktree/id/gitdir in the main repository and the .git file in the worktree) are recorded using absolute paths, setting 'worktree.useRelativePaths=true' and running 'git worktree repair' within the main worktree converts them to relative paths. Conversely, given a state in which the cross-references are recorded using relative paths, one would expect that setting 'worktree.useRelativePaths=false' and running 'git worktree repair' would convert them to absolute paths. However, they remain as relative paths. This is because we incorrectly use read_gitfile_gently(), which always returns an absolute path. To fix this, introduce read_gitfile_raw(), which reads the path from the .git file without resolving it to an absolute path. Because read_gitfile_raw() does not validate the path with is_git_directory(), repair_gitfile() performs this validation to preserve the existing behavior. 2026-08-06setup: defer object database creationPatrick Steinhardt1-2/+2
In a subsequent commit we'll make the creation of the on-disk data structures of an object database pluggable. This will lead to an in-between state where we have already configured the repository's object database, but it's not usable yet until we eventually call `create_object_directory()`. Lift the call to `odb_new()` out of `apply_repository_format()` so that callers have more wiggle room with when exactly they call it, and adapt them accordingly. The only exception is `init_db()`, where we now defer creating the object database until we call `create_object_database()`. With this change, initializing and creating the object database on disk is now neatly encapsulated in a single function, which will make it easier for a subsequent commit to move creation of the on-disk data structures into the `struct odb_source` backends. In the preceding commits we have refactored how we discover and set up repositories so that we cannot end up with partially-configured repos. Instead, we apply the gitdir, worktree and repository format in a single location, only. Initializing a new repository has the same antipattern though: while most of the information for the new repository is passed via parameters, the work tree is instead propagated by configuring the repository's work tree. Refactor the code so that we also pass the work tree as an explicit parameter. Like this, configuration fo the repository happens in a single spot, too, just as with repository discovery. If a .git file is well-formed but points to a directory that is not itself a valid repository, then we say: fatal: not a git repository: <pointed-to-repo> without mentioning the .git file that pointed us there in the first place. Doing so could better help the user understand the source of the problem. In theory the most helpful thing we could do is mention both paths, like: gitfile '<gitfile>' points to invalid repository: <pointed-to-repo> But there's another catch: when we generate the error, we don't always know the pointed-to repository! This leads to a potential segfault. The message comes from read_gitfile_error_die(). Originally we only called that function from inside read_gitfile_gently(), passing in both the gitfile path and the pointed-to path. But that changed in 1dd27bfbfd (setup: improve error diagnosis for invalid .git files, 2026-03-04). Since then, the caller in setup_git_directory_gently(), even if it wants to die on error, always passes in the "return_error_code" flag, asking the function to instead return a numeric error code. And then it calls read_gitfile_error_die() itself, passing NULL for the pointed-to path. If we get the READ_GITFILE_ERR_NOT_A_REPO code, we form a message using that NULL pointer, and either segfault or get garbage like "not a git repository: (null)", depending on the platform. We could fix this by having the function pass out both the numeric error code and the pointed-to path. But that creates a new headache: we have to allocate that string on the heap and pass ownership back to the caller. So now every caller has to be aware of it (and either free the result, or signal that they are not interested by using an extra parameter). Instead, let's just drop the pointed-to path from the error message entirely, and mention only the gitfile. This fixes the NULL dereference without introducing any more complexity. The user-facing error message is not as detailed as it could be, but is better than the original. Since it mentions the gitfile, a user investigating the situation can look there to find the pointed-to path (whereas you could not go the other way from the original message). There's an existing test in t0002 which triggers this case, but we didn't notice the problem because it checks only that we said "not a repository", and not the full string. So if we print "(null)" it is happy. It will probably crash on some non-glibc platforms, but nobody seems to have reported it yet (the breakage is recent-ish as of v2.54). I'm also somewhat surprised that building with ASan/UBSan doesn't catch this, but it doesn't seem to (and I found an open issue with somebody asking for NULL printf checks to be implemented in the sanitizers). We'll tweak the test to match the new error, but there's no need to beef it up further, since we're not showing the pointed-to path at all. We also racily trigger this in t7450. During parallel cloning we might see one of several errors, including this one. And so we must update that message, too (you can otherwise find the failure pretty quickly by running t7450 with --stress). The `is_bare_repository_cfg` variable tracks two different pieces of information: - It tracks whether the user has invoked git with the "--bare" flag, which makes us treat any discovered Git repository as if it was a bare repository. - Otherwise it tracks whether the discovered `the_repository` is bare. This makes the flag extremely confusing and creates a bit of a challenge when handling multiple repositories in the same process. Split up the concerns of this variable into two pieces: - `startup_info.force_bare_repository` tracks whether the user has passed the "--bare" flag. This is used as a hint to treat newly set up repositories as bare regardless of whether or not they have a worktree. - `struct repository::bare_cfg` tracks whether or not a repository is considered bare. This takes into account both whether the user has passed "--bare" and the discovered state of the repository itself. Whether or not a repository is bare is now resolved when checking the repository's format, and is then later applied to the repository itself via `apply_repository_format()`. This enables a subsequent change where we make `is_bare_repository()` not depend on global state anymore. With the preceding changes we now always construct the repository's object database before applying the repository format. Remove this duplication by constructing it in `apply_repository_format()` instead. Note that we create the object database _after_ having set up the repository's hash algorithm, but _before_ setting the compat hash algorithm. This is intentional: - Constructing the object database may require knowledge of its intended object format. - Setting up the compatibility hash requires the object database to be initialized already, because we immediately read the loose object map. The first point is sensible, the second maybe a little less so. Ideally, it should be the responsibility of the object database itself to initialize any data structures required for the compatibility hash. But this would require further changes, so this is kept as-is for now. Further note that this requires us to move handling of the environment variables GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY and GIT_ALTERNATE_OBJECT_DIRECTORIES into the repository format, as well. This allows the caller more flexibility around whether or not those environment variables are being honored, as we want to respect them in "setup.c", but not in "repository.c". After having discovered the repository format we then apply it to the repository so that it knows to use the proper repository extensions. The logic to apply the format is duplicated across three callsites, which makes it rather painfull to add new extensions. Introduce a new function `apply_repository_format()` that takes a repo and applies a given format to it and adapt all callsites to use it. This function is also the new caller of `verify_repository_format()` so that we can ensure that we never apply an invalid repository format. The verification we have in `read_and_verify_repository_format()` is thus redundant now and dropped. Rename `read_and_verify_repository_format()` accordingly. While at it, also rename `check_repository_format()` to clarify that it doesn't only _check_ the format, but that it also applies it. This of course doesn't make much sense anymore now that we can set up worktrees for arbitrary repositories: - We track whether the worktree has already been initialized and, if so, we skip the call to `chdir_notify()` and setenv(3p). It does not make much sense to store this info in the repository, as we _would_ want to update the environment when switching between worktrees back and forth. So instead of storing this info in the repository, we drop this state entirely and live with the fact that we may execute the logic twice. It should ultimately be idempotent though and thus not be much of a problem. - We track whether the worktree configuration is bogus. If so, and if later on some caller tries to setup the worktree, then we'll die instead. This is indeed information that we can move into the repository itself. Similar as with the preceding commit, `is_inside_work_tree()` determines whether the current working directory is located inside the worktree of `the_repository`. Perform the same refactoring by dropping the caching mechanism and injecting the repository that shall be checked. Note that, same as in the preceding commit, we're also resolving the worktree path via `realpath()`. In theory this step is not necessary as we always set the worktree path via `repo_set_worktree()`, and that function already resolves the path for us. But resolving the path a second time is unlikely to matter performance-wise, and it feels fragile to rely on the repository's worktree path being absolute. The function `is_inside_git_dir()` verifies whether or not the current working directory is located inside the gitdir of `the_repository`. This is done by taking the gitdir path and verifying that it's a prefix of the current working directory. This information is cached so that we don't have to re-do this change multiple times. Furthermore, we proactively set the value in multiple locations so that we don't even have to perform the check when we have discovered the repository. While we could simply move the caching variable into the repository, the current layout doesn't really feel sensible in the first place: - It can easily lead to false positives or negatives if at any point in time we may switch the current working directory. - We don't call the function in a hot loop, and neither is it overly expensive to compute. Drop the caching infrastructure and instead compute the property ad-hoc via an injected repository. Note that there is one small gotcha: we often end up with relative gitdir paths, and if so `is_inside_dir()` might fail. This wasn't an issue before because of how we proactively set the cached value during repository discovery. Now that we stop doing that it becomes a problem though, which we work around by resolving the gitdir via `realpath()`. 2026-05-13builtin/maintenance: fix locking with "--detach"Patrick Steinhardt1-0/+15
When running git-maintenance(1), we create a lockfile that is supposed to keep other maintenance processes from running at the same time. This lockfile is broken though in case the "--detach" flag is passed: the lockfile is created by the parent process and will be cleaned up either manually or on exit. But when detaching, the parent will exit before all of the background maintenance tasks have been run, and consequently the lock only covers a smaller part of the whole maintenance process. Fix this bug by reassigning all tempfiles from the parent process to the child process when daemonizing so that it becomes the responsibility of the child to clean them up. Note that this is a broader fix, as we now always reassign tempfiles when daemonizing. This is a natural consequence of the semantics of `daemonize()` though, as it essentially promises to continue running the current process in the background. It is thus sensible to have that function perform the whole dance of assigning resources to the child process, including tempfiles. There's only a single other caller in "daemon.c", but that process doesn't create any tempfiles before the call to `daemonize()` and is thus not impacted by this change. 'read_gitfile_gently()' treats any non-regular file as 'READ_GITFILE_ERR_NOT_A_FILE' and fails to discern between 'ENOENT' and other stat failures. This flawed error reporting is noted by two 'NEEDSWORK' comments. Address these comments by introducing two new error codes: 'READ_GITFILE_ERR_MISSING'(which groups the "file missing" scenarios together) and 'READ_GITFILE_ERR_IS_A_DIR': 1. Update 'read_gitfile_error_die()' to treat 'IS_A_DIR', 'MISSING', 'NOT_A_FILE' and 'STAT_FAILED' as non-fatal no-ops. This accommodates intentional non-repo scenarios (e.g., GIT_DIR=/dev/null). 2. Explicitly catch 'NOT_A_FILE' and 'STAT_FAILED' during discovery and call 'die()' if 'die_on_error' is set. 3. Unconditionally pass '&error_code' to 'read_gitfile_gently()'. 4. Only invoke 'is_git_directory()' when we explicitly receive 'READ_GITFILE_ERR_IS_A_DIR', avoiding redundant checks. Additionally, audit external callers of 'read_gitfile_gently()' in 'submodule.c' and 'worktree.c' to accommodate the refined error codes. 2026-02-25refs: allow reference location in refstorage configKarthik Nayak1-0/+1
The 'extensions.refStorage' config is used to specify the reference backend for a given repository. Both the 'files' and 'reftable' backends utilize the $GIT_DIR as the reference folder by default in `get_main_ref_store()`. Since the reference backends are pluggable, this means that they could work with out-of-tree reference directories too. Extend the 'refStorage' config to also support taking an URI input, where users can specify the reference backend and the location. Add the required changes to obtain and propagate this value to the individual backends. Add the necessary documentation and tests. Traditionally, for linked worktrees, references were stored in the '$GIT_DIR/worktrees/<wt_id>' path. But when using an alternate reference storage path, it doesn't make sense to store the main worktree references in the new path, and the linked worktree references in the $GIT_DIR. So, let's store linked worktree references in '$ALTERNATE_REFERENCE_DIR/worktrees/<wt_id>'. To do this, create the necessary files and folders while also adding stubs in the $GIT_DIR path to ensure that it is still considered a Git directory. Ideally, we would want to pass in a `struct worktree *` to individual backends, instead of passing the `gitdir`. This allows them to handle worktree specific logic. Currently, that is not possible since the worktree code is: - Tied to using the global `the_repository` variable. - Is not setup before the reference database during initialization of the repository. The `create_reference_database()` function is used to create the reference database during initialization of a repository. The function calls `repo_set_ref_storage_format()` to set the repositories reference format. This is an unexpected side-effect of the function. More so because the function is only called in two locations: 1. During git-init(1) where the value is propagated from the `struct repository_format repo_fmt` value. 2. During git-clone(1) where the value is propagated from the `the_repository` value. The former is valid, however the flow already calls `repo_set_ref_storage_format()`, so this effort is simply duplicated. The latter sets the existing value in `the_repository` back to itself. While this is okay for now, introduction of more fields in `repo_set_ref_storage_format()` would cause issues, especially dynamically allocated strings, where we would free/allocate the same string back into `the_repostiory`. To avoid all this confusion, clean up the function to no longer take in and set the repo's reference storage format. The idea of this extension is to abstract away the submodule gitdir path implementation: everyone is expected to use the config and not worry about how the path is computed internally, either in git or other implementations. With this extension enabled, the submodule.<name>.gitdir repo config becomes the single source of truth for all submodule gitdir paths. The submodule.<name>.gitdir config is added automatically for all new submodules when this extension is enabled. Git will throw an error if the extension is enabled and a config is missing, advising users how to migrate. Migration is manual for now. When we define a new repository format with REPOSITORY_FORMAT_INIT, we always use GIT_HASH_SHA1, and this value ends up getting used as the default value to initialize a repository if none of the command line, environment, or config tell us to do otherwise. Because we might not always want to use SHA-1 as the default, let's instead specify the default hash algorithm constant so that we will use whatever the specified default is. However, we also need to continue to read older repositories. If we're in a v0 repository or extensions.objectformat is not set, then we must continue to default to the original hash algorithm: SHA-1. If an algorithm is set explicitly, however, it will override the hash_algo member of the repository_format struct and we'll get the right value. Similarly, if the repository was initialized before Git 0.99.3, then it may lack a core.repositoryformatversion key, and some repositories lack a config file altogether. In both cases, format->version is -1 and we need to assume that SHA-1 is in use. Because clear_repository_format reinitializes the struct repository_format and therefore sets the hash_algo member to the default (which could in the future not be SHA-1), we need to reset this member explicitly. We know, however, that at the point we call read_repository_format, we are actually reading an existing repository and not initializing a new one or operating outside of a repository, so we are not changing the default behavior back to SHA-1 if the default algorithm is different. It is potentially questionable that we ignore all repository configuration if there is a config file but it doesn't have core.repositoryformatversion set, in which case we reset all of the configuration to the default. However, it is unclear what the right thing to do instead with such an old repository is and a simple git init will add the missing entry, so for now, we simply honor what the existing code does and reset the value to the default, simply adding our initialization to SHA-1. 2024-01-02setup: introduce "extensions.refStorage" extensionPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+3
Introduce a new "extensions.refStorage" extension that allows us to specify the ref storage format used by a repository. For now, the only supported format is the "files" format, but this list will likely soon be extended to also support the upcoming "reftable" format. There have been discussions on the Git mailing list in the past around how exactly this extension should look like. One alternative [1] that was discussed was whether it would make sense to model the extension in such a way that backends are arbitrarily stackable. This would allow for a combined value of e.g. "loose,packed-refs" or "loose,reftable", which indicates that new refs would be written via "loose" files backend and compressed into "packed-refs" or "reftable" backends, respectively. It is arguable though whether this flexibility and the complexity that it brings with it is really required for now. It is not foreseeable that there will be a proliferation of backends in the near-term future, and the current set of existing formats and formats which are on the horizon can easily be configured with the much simpler proposal where we have a single value, only. Furthermore, if we ever see that we indeed want to gain the ability to arbitrarily stack the ref formats, then we can adapt the current extension rather easily. Given that Git clients will refuse any unknown value for the "extensions.refStorage" extension they would also know to ignore a stacked "loose,packed-refs" in the future. So let's stick with the easy proposal for the time being and wire up the extension. 2024-01-02setup: start tracking ref storage formatPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+5
In order to discern which ref storage format a repository is supposed to use we need to start setting up and/or discovering the format. This needs to happen in two separate code paths. - The first path is when we create a repository via `init_db()`. When we are re-initializing a preexisting repository we need to retain the previously used ref storage format -- if the user asked for a different format then this indicates an error and we error out. Otherwise we either initialize the repository with the format asked for by the user or the default format, which currently is the "files" backend. - The second path is when discovering repositories, where we need to read the config of that repository. There is not yet any way to configure something other than the "files" backend, so we can just blindly set the ref storage format to this backend. Wire up this logic so that we have the ref storage format always readily available when needed. As there is only a single backend and because it is not configurable we cannot yet verify that this tracking works as expected via tests, but tests will be added in subsequent commits. To countermand this ommission now though, raise a BUG() in case the ref storage format is not set up properly in `ref_store_init()`.
