The in-core data structure used to keep track of 'url.<real>.{insteadOf,pushInsteadOf} = <alias>' settings is not properly cleaned up when the process is done with it. 'struct rewrites' is embedded in 'remote_state' and serves as the top level of the rewrite data. This holds an array of a variable number of pointers to 'struct rewrite' allocated individually on the heap. Each 'struct rewrite' holds a '.base' string and an array of 'struct counted_string' called '.instead_of', which is allocated contiguously on the heap. Each 'struct counted_string' has a pointer to a string allocated on the heap. Amid these pointers, rewrites_release() fails to free everything other than 'struct rewrite''s '.base' member and the 'struct rewrite' instances themselves. Fix rewrites_release() to also free the contiguous array storing '.instead_of', the string pointers within each '.instead_of' element, and each 'struct rewrite' instance individually allocated on the heap. 2026-07-22submodule: resolve insteadOf aliases when matching remoteÉric NICOLAS1-3/+11
When ca62f524c1 (submodule: look up remotes by URL first, 2025-06-23) introduced a mechanism to identify which remote is to be used by a submodule, it compared the URL stored in the .gitmodules inventory to that of each available remote. The URLs of remotes are rewritten according to url.<base>.insteadOf, whereas those stored in the .gitmodules aren't. When such aliasing applies, no match can be made between the two corresponding sides, and the procedure degrades to its fallback logic electing either the only configured remote if there is only one, or "origin" otherwise. That behaviour is unfortunate when no remote is called "origin", because its last resort will have a submodule update command look for a non-existent remote-tracking reference and fail to proceed, instead of using the remote whose rewritten URL matches. Resolve the alias in the URL inventoried in .gitmodules before comparing it against those of the corresponding submodule's configured remotes. Git accepts a repository URL as branch.<name>.pushRemote and can push to it. This branch setting takes precedence over remote.pushDefault. A branch can be configured with a URL-valued pushRemote before any push occurs. If the remotes are later rearranged with "git remote rename" and "git remote add", the newly added remote may use that URL. The URL value is unaffected by the rename and continues to take precedence over remote.pushDefault. The URL and the remote then point to the same repository, but Git does not connect them for tracking. Pushing works, but @{push} cannot identify the remote's tracking branch. As a result, "git status" cannot show the push branch, and an up-to-date push can leave its tracking information stale. When exactly one configured remote would push to the same URL, use that remote for push tracking. Continue to push to the URL so the configured remote's push settings do not change existing behavior. The only remaining user of `the_hash_algo` in "refspec.c" is `refspec_append()`, which needs to know the hash algorithm so that it can parse the appended refspec item. In contrast to the functions adapted in the preceding commit, this function always operates on a `struct refspec`. As that structure is expected to only ever contain refspecs that all use the same hash function it doesn't make sense though to adapt each caller. Instead, adapt the structure itself so that it gets initialized with a hash function and use that hash function to parse new refspec items. Adapt callers accordingly. This removes the final dependency on the global repository variable in "refspec.c", so we can drop `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE`. When parsing a refspec item we need to know about the hash algorithm used by the repository so that we can decide whether or not a given string is an exact object ID. We use `the_hash_algo` for this, which makes the code implicitly depend on `the_repository`. Refactor `refspec_item_init_fetch()`, `refspec_item_init_push()` and `valid_fetch_refspec()` so that callers have to pass in the hash algorithm explicitly and adapt callers accordingly. The global variable 'push_default' specifies the default behavior of 'git push' when no explicit refspec is provided. Move 'push_default' into 'struct repo_config_values' to continue the libification effort. While 'enum push_default_type' ideally belongs in 'remote.h', moving it there introduces a circular dependency chain: remote.h -> hash.h -> repository.h -> environment.h. Therefore, the enum definition is kept in 'environment.h' just above 'struct repo_config_values' with a NEEDSWORK comment for future cleanup. Modify the configuration parsing in environment.c to update the per-repository structure directly, and update caller across the codebase to access the value via 'repo_config_values()'. The `remote_tracking()` function unconditionally dereferences `remote->fetch` without checking whether remote is NULL. In practice, this never happens because the only caller (`apply_cas()`) guards the calls to this function by checking the `use_tracking` and `use_tracking_for_rest` attributes. However, it requires quite involved reasoning to reach that conclusion, and is therefore fragile. Just return -1 ("no tracking ref") when there is no remote to work with. Pointed out by Coverity. Add a new 'remote.<name>.negotiationInclude' multi-valued config option that provides default values for --negotiation-include when no --negotiation-include arguments are specified over the command line. This is a mirror of how 'remote.<name>.negotiationRestrict' specifies defaults for the --negotiation-restrict arguments. Each value is either an exact ref name or a glob pattern whose tips should always be sent as 'have' lines during negotiation. The config values are resolved through the same resolve_negotiation_include() codepath as the CLI options. This option is additive with the normal negotiation process: the negotiation algorithm still runs and advertises its own selected commits, but the refs matching the config are sent unconditionally on top of those heuristically selected commits. Similar to the negotiationRestrict config, an empty value resets the value list to allow ignoring earlier config values, such as those that might be set in system or global config. In a previous change, the --negotiation-restrict command-line option of 'git fetch' was added as a synonym of --negotiation-tip. Both of these options restrict the set of 'haves' the client can send as part of negotiation. This was previously not available via a configuration option. Add a new 'remote.<name>.negotiationRestrict' multi-valued config option that updates 'git fetch <name>' to use these restrictions by default. If the user provides even one --negotiation-restrict argument, then the config is ignored. An empty value resets the value list to allow ignoring earlier config values, such as those that might be set in system or global config. Move them to remote.c and declare them in remote.h so that other builtins can use the same logic without duplication. Useful for the next patch. In branch_get_push(), we usually allocate a new string for the @{push} ref, but will not do so in push.default=upstream mode, where we just pass back the result of branch_get_upstream() directly. This led to a hacky memory management scheme in e291c75a95 (remote.c: add branch_get_push, 2015-05-21): we store the result in the push_tracking_ref field of a "struct branch", under the assumption that the branch struct will last until the end of the program. So even though the struct doesn't know if it has an allocated string or not, it doesn't matter because we hold on to it either way. But that assumption was violated by f5ccb535cc (remote: fix leaking config strings, 2024-08-22), which added a function to free branch structs. Any struct which is fed to branch_release() is at risk of leaking its push_tracking_ref member. I don't think this can actually be triggered in practice. We rarely actually free the branch structs, and we only fill in the push_tracking_ref string lazily when it is needed. So triggering the leak would require a code path that does both, and I couldn't find one. Still, this is an ugly trap that may eventually spring on us. Since there is only one code path in branch_get_push() that doesn't allocate, let's just have it copy the string. 2026-01-19remote: fix leak in branch_get_push_1() with invalid "simple" configJeff King1-1/+3
Most of the code paths in branch_get_push_1() allocate a string for the @{push} value. We then return the result, which is stored in a "struct branch", so the value is not leaked. But there's one path that does leak: when we are in the "simple" push mode, we have to check that the @{push} value matches what we'd get for @{upstream}. If it doesn't, we return an error, but forget to free the @{push} value we computed. Curiously, the existing tests don't trigger this with LSan, even though they do exercise the code path. As far as I can tell, it should be triggered via: git -c push.default=simple \ -c branch.foo.remote=origin \ -c branch.foo.merge=refs/heads/not-foo \ rev-parse foo@{push} which will complain that the upstream ("not-foo") does not match the push destination ("foo"). We do die() shortly after this, but not until after returning from branch_get_push_1(), which is where the leak happens. So it seems like a false negative in LSan. However, I can trigger it reliably by printing the @{push} value using for-each-ref. This takes a little more setup (because we need "foo" to actually exist to iterate over it with for-each-ref), but we can piggy-back on the existing repo config in t6300. The string returned from tracking_for_push_dest() comes from apply_refspec(), and thus is always an allocated string (or NULL). We should return a non-const pointer so that the caller knows that ownership of the string is being transferred. This goes back to the function's origin in e291c75a95 (remote.c: add branch_get_push, 2015-05-21). It never really mattered because our return is just forwarded through branch_get_push_1(), which returns a const string as part of an intentionally hacky memory management scheme (see that commit for details). As the first step of untangling that hackery, let's drop the extra const from this helper function (and from the variables that store its result). There should be no functional change (yet). We have an error_buf() helper that functions a bit like our error() helper, but returns NULL instead of -1. Its return type is "const char *", but this is overly restrictive. If we use the helper in a function that returns non-const "char *", the compiler will complain about the implicit cast from const to non-const. Meanwhile, the const in the helper is doing nothing useful, as it only ever returns NULL. Let's drop the const, which will let us use it in both types of function. Our coding guidelines say that: Functions that operate on `struct S` are named `S_<verb>()` and should generally receive a pointer to `struct S` as first parameter. While most of the functions related to `struct commit_list` already follow that naming schema, `free_commit_list()` doesn't. Rename the function to address this and adjust all of its callers. Add a compatibility wrapper for the old function name to ease the transition and avoid any semantic conflicts with in-flight patch series. 2025-11-04refs: introduce wrapper struct for `each_ref_fn`Patrick Steinhardt1-15/+12
The `each_ref_fn` callback function type is used across our code base for several different functions that iterate through reference. There's a bunch of callbacks implementing this type, which makes any changes to the callback signature extremely noisy. An example of the required churn is e8207717f1 (refs: add referent to each_ref_fn, 2024-08-09): adding a single argument required us to change 48 files. It was already proposed back then [1] that we might want to introduce a wrapper structure to alleviate the pain going forward. While this of course requires the same kind of global refactoring as just introducing a new parameter, it at least allows us to more change the callback type afterwards by just extending the wrapper structure. One counterargument to this refactoring is that it makes the structure more opaque. While it is obvious which callsites need to be fixed up when we change the function type, it's not obvious anymore once we use a structure. That being said, we only have a handful of sites that actually need to populate this wrapper structure: our ref backends, "refs/iterator.c" as well as very few sites that invoke the iterator callback functions directly. Introduce this wrapper structure so that we can adapt the iterator interfaces more readily. 2025-09-22revision: add wrapper to setup_revisions() from a strvecJeff King1-4/+1
The setup_revisions() function was designed to take the argc/argv pair from the operating system. But we sometimes construct our own argv using a strvec and pass that in. There are a few gotchas that callers need to deal with here: 1. You should always pass the free_removed_argv_elements option via setup_revision_opt. Otherwise, entries may be leaked if setup_revisions() re-shuffles options. 2. After setup_revisions() returns, the strvec state is odd. We get a reduced argc from setup_revisions() telling us how many unknown options were left in place. Entries after that in argv may be retained, or may be NULL (depending on how the reshuffling happened). But the strvec's "nr" field still represents the original value, and some of the entries it thinks it is still storing may be NULL. Callers must be careful with how they access it. Some callers deal with (1), but not all. In practice they are OK because they do not pass any options that would cause setup_revisions() to re-shuffle (namely unknown options which may be relayed from the user, and the use of the "--" separator). But it's probably a good idea to consistently pass this option anyway to future-proof ourselves against the details of setup_revisions() changing. No callers address (2), though I don't think there any visible bugs. Most of them simply call strvec_clear() and never otherwise look at the result. And in fact, if they naively set foo.nr to the argc returned by setup_revisions(), that would cause leaks! Because setup_revisions() does not free consumed options[1], we have to leave the "nr" field of the strvec at its original value to find and free them during strvec_clear(). So I don't think there are any bugs to fix here, but we can make things safer and simpler for callers. Let's introduce a helper function that sets the free_removed_argv_elements automatically and shrinks the strvec to represent the retained options afterwards (taking care to free the now-obsolete entries). We'll start by converting all of the call-sites which use the free_removed_argv_elements option. There should be no behavior change for them, except that their "shrunken" entries are cleaned up immediately, rather than waiting for a strvec_clear() call. [1] Arguably setup_revisions() should be doing this step for us if we told it to free removed options, but there are many existing callers which will be broken if it did. When "git push <remote> <src>:<dst>" does not spell out the destination side of the ref fully, and when <src> is not given as a reference but an object name, the code tries to give advice messages based on the type of that object. The type is determined by calling odb_read_object_info() and signalled by its return value. The code however reported a programming error with BUG() when this function said that there is no such object, which happens when the object name is given as a full hexadecimal (if the object name is given as a partial hexadecimal or an non-existing ref, the function would have died without returning, so this BUG() wouldn't have triggered). This is wrong. It is an ordinary end-user mistake to give an object name that does not exist and treated as such. An example of the error message produced is as follows: error: The destination you provided is not a full refname (i.e., starting with "refs/"). We tried to guess what you meant by: - Looking for a ref that matches 'branch' on the remote side. - Checking if the <src> being pushed ('0000000000000000000000000000000000000001') is a ref in "refs/{heads,tags}/". If so we add a corresponding refs/{heads,tags}/ prefix on the remote side. Neither worked, so we gave up. You must fully qualify the ref. 2025-08-06refs: pass refname when invoking reflog entry callbackPatrick Steinhardt1-2/+4
With `refs_for_each_reflog_ent()` callers can iterate through all the reflog entries for a given reference. The callback that is being invoked for each such entry does not receive the name of the reference that we are currently iterating through. This isn't really a limiting factor, as callers can simply pass the name via the callback data. But this layout sometimes does make for a bit of an awkward calling pattern. One example: when iterating through all reflogs, and for each reflog we iterate through all refnames, we have to do some extra book keeping to track which reference name we are currently yielding reflog entries for. Change the signature of the callback function so that the reference name of the reflog gets passed through to it. Adapt callers accordingly and start using the new parameter in trivial cases. The next commit will refactor the reference migration logic to make use of this parameter so that we can simplify its logic a bit. In 036876a1067 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global repository variable explicit at the callsite. Follow through with that intent and remove `git_config_get_string()`. All callsites are adjusted so that they use `repo_config_get_string(the_repository, ...)` instead. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. 2025-06-23submodule: look up remotes by URL firstJacob Keller1-0/+15
The get_default_remote_submodule() function performs a lookup to find the appropriate remote to use within a submodule. The function first checks to see if it can find the remote for the current branch. If this fails, it then checks to see if there is exactly one remote. It will use this, before finally falling back to "origin" as the default. If a user happens to rename their default remote from origin, either manually or by setting something like clone.defaultRemoteName, this fallback will not work. In such cases, the submodule logic will try to use a non-existent remote. This usually manifests as a failure to trigger the submodule update. The parent project already knows and stores the submodule URL in either .gitmodules or its .git/config. Add a new repo_remote_from_url() helper which will iterate over all the remotes in a repository and return the first remote which has a matching URL. Refactor get_default_remote_submodule to find the submodule and get its URL. If a valid URL exists, first try to obtain a remote using the new repo_remote_from_url(). Fall back to the repo_default_remote() otherwise. The fallback logic is kept in case for some reason the user has manually changed the URL within the submodule. Additionally, we still try to use a remote rather than directly passing the URL in the fetch_in_submodule() logic. This ensures that an update will properly update the remote refs within the submodule as expected, rather than just fetching into FETCH_HEAD.
