2026-08-17odb: eagerly initialize alternatesPatrick Steinhardt1-2/+0
When creating the object database we initialize the main object database source, but we don't yet initialize its alternates. Instead, we have many calls to `odb_prepare_alternates()` cluttered around the code base whenever we are about to iterate through the sources. This lazy loading doesn't really add much value: the moment where we read any object we _have_ to load the alternates anyway. So given that most of our commands would access the object database this optimization is not really buying us much in the first place. Quite on the contrary, it makes the code harder to understand and is a potential source of bugs in case any callsite forgot to prepare alternates before we iterate through the sources. Historically though there was a reason why we deferred lazy-loading: it may happen that the repository has "core.ignoreCase" configured, and we use that to deduplicate the list of alternates in case we had the same alternate configured multiple times, but with different casing. We used to initialize the object database before we had fully configured the owning repository though, and consequently we couldn't access that configuration yet. This has changed in the preceding commit though where we started to parse "core.ignoreCase" manually. Eagerly prepare alternates both when creating the object database and when flushing its caches. `bitmap_position()` only returns a negative value when an object is not present in the bitmap index. In `find_objects()`, we have added a check (11d45a6e6a) to avoid processing a root whose reachability is already represented by the base bitmap, but accidentally uses `pos > 0`. Consequently, it never performs the membership test for an object at position zero. If that object has an individual reachability bitmap, we unnecessarily OR that bitmap into the base again. Otherwise, we add the object to the not-mapped list, only for the subsequent pass to recognize that it is already present. The latter pass correctly treats all non-negative positions as valid, so this does not change the resulting object set, but an off-by-one edge case. Treat position zero as valid by changing the condition to `pos >= 0`. The existing pseudo-merge traversal test exercises this case. Its position-zero commit is presented through multiple roots. Before this change, each occurrence is counted as a bitmap hit; afterwards, only the first occurrence is counted. Assert the resulting hit count to cover the boundary condition. Also cover the non-pseudo-merge case by passing `HEAD` twice. The first occurrence initializes the base from its stored bitmap, and the second must recognize that position zero is already present. 2026-07-15odb: introduce object filters to `odb_for_each_object()`Patrick Steinhardt1-2/+1
The function `for_each_bitmapped_object()` can be used to iterate through all objects covered by a bitmap. The benefit of this function is that it allows the caller to efficiently handle some object filters. For example, this can be used to filter out objects of a specific type with some simple bitmap operations. But callers are currently required to manually wire up the use of bitmaps though, and to do so they have to reach into internals of a given object database source. Introduce a new `struct odb_for_each_object_options::filter` field so that the interface becomes generic. When set, then a backend may optionally use the filter to skip some objects that it would have otherwise yielded. Note that the respective backends are free to ignore this field if they cannot meaningfully optimize for a given filter, and consequently callers need to verify whether they actually want the returned objects. While annoying, we cannot easily lift this restriction anyway as the object filter infrastructure supports some filters that cannot be answered by the object database alone. An alternative might be to limit the filters to only those that _can_ be answered by backends. But ultimately, the filters that can be answered efficiently by the "packed" backend are completely disjunct from those that can be answered by the "loose" backend, and consequently the set of filters supported by all backends would be empty. Furthermore, it would require us to make assumptions about capabilities of future backends, which may be able to efficiently handle more filters than current ones. So in the end, this alternative would only limit us artificially. Implement the logic for the "packed" source. Note that we use the new function `prepare_bitmap_git_for_source()` to open the bitmap: as the backend operates on a single object source, we must only use bitmaps that belong to that specific source. Otherwise we might yield objects that are not part of the source at all, and with multiple sources we would enumerate the same bitmap once per source. The function `prepare_bitmap_git()` opens the first bitmap it can find in any of the object sources connected to the repository. In a subsequent commit, the "packed" object database backend will learn to use bitmaps to answer object filters when enumerating objects. That backend operates on a single object source though, so using a bitmap that potentially belongs to a different source would be wrong: - The source would yield objects that are not part of the source itself. - The object source info would be attributed to the wrong source. - With multiple sources, each source would enumerate the same bitmap another time. Introduce a new function `prepare_bitmap_git_for_source()` that only opens bitmaps belonging to the given object source. 2026-07-15pack-bitmap: iterate object sources when opening bitmapsPatrick Steinhardt1-38/+31
When opening a bitmap for a repository we perform two steps: - We first look for a multi-pack index bitmap in any of the object sources connected to the repository. - We then look for a packfile bitmap in any of the packfiles of any of the object sources. Both of these steps thus iterate through object sources themselves, one via `odb_prepare_alternates()` and one via `repo_for_each_pack()`. This layout makes it hard to introduce a way to open the bitmap of one specific object source, which is functionality that we'll require in a subsequent commit. Reverse the loop so that we instead loop through all sources in the outer loop, and then for each source we try to load its bitmap via either the multi-pack index or via a packfile. Note that this changes the precedence of bitmaps in one specific edge case: when an earlier object source only has a packfile bitmap, but a later source has a multi-pack index bitmap, we now pick the packfile bitmap of the earlier source. Previously, a multi-pack index bitmap from any source would have taken precedence over all packfile bitmaps. Given that object sources are ordered such that the local source comes first, this arguably is an improvement, as we now prefer local bitmaps over bitmaps in alternates. Furthermore, we already warn about repositories that have multiple bitmaps, so this setup is broken and thus arguably not worth worrying about too much. 2026-07-15pack-bitmap: allow aborting iteration of bitmapped objectsPatrick Steinhardt1-10/+21
In a subsequent commit we'll lift iteration of bitmapped objects into the "packed" backend and make it accessible via `odb_for_each_object()`. The calling convention for that function is that the callback may return a non-zero exit code, and if so we'll abort iteration. This is currently impossible to realize though, as `for_each_bitmapped_object()` will ignore any return value and just churn through all objects completely. This doesn't matter to the callers of `for_each_bitmapped_object()`, as there's only one of them in git-cat-file(1), and the callbacks we pass always return zero. But once we move the logic into the generic infrastructure it becomes a latent bug waiting to happen. Refactor the code so that the return value of the `show_reach` callback is not ignored anymore. Instead, returning a non-zero value will cause us to abort iteration in both `show_objects_for_type()` and in `for_each_bitmapped_object()`. Note though that there's a second user of `show_objects_for_type()` with `traverse_bitmap_commit_list()`, and that function does indeed invoke callbacks that may return non-zero. This non-zero return value never had any effect at all though, and the callbacks that return non-zero values are only ever invoked via `traverse_bitmap_commit_list()`. 2026-07-10pack-bitmap: handle missing bitmap for base MIDXJohannes Schindelin1-0/+4
When `prepare_midx_bitmap_git()` is called to load the bitmap for a chained MIDX's base layer, if the base MIDX does not have an associated bitmap file (e.g., it was not generated, or was deleted by gc), the return value is NULL. It is then stored in `bitmap_git->base` and immediately dereferenced on the next line. This can happen in practice with incremental MIDX chains: the base MIDX may have been written without `--write-bitmap-index`, or the bitmap may have been pruned while the incremental layer's bitmap still references it. Check the return value and go to the cleanup label (which unmaps the current bitmap and returns -1) so the caller falls back to non-bitmap object enumeration, matching the handling of other bitmap loading failures in the same function. Our interfaces used to interact with MIDXs all work on top of the generic `struct odb_source`. This doesn't make much sense though: a MIDX is strictly tied to the "packed" source, so passing in a generic source gives the false sense that it may also work with a different type of source. Fix this conceptual weirdness and instead require the caller to pass in a "packed" source explicitly. This also makes the next commit easier to implement, where we drop the pointer to the "files" source in the "packed" source. 2026-06-15odb: use size_t for object_info.sizep and the size APIsJohannes Schindelin1-2/+2
When `js/objects-larger-than-4gb-on-windows` widened the streaming, index-pack and unpack-objects code paths, in the interest of keeping the patches somewhat reasonably-sized, it left the public ODB API still typed in `unsigned long`. In particular `struct object_info::sizep` and the four wrappers built on top of it (`odb_read_object`, `odb_read_object_peeled`, `odb_read_object_info`, `odb_pretend_object`) still return the unpacked size through `unsigned long *`, so on Windows `cat-file -s` and the `git add` / `git status` paths for a >4 GiB blob silently cap at 4 GiB. Widen the field and the four wrappers. The previous commits already widened the `unpack_entry()` cascade and pack-objects' in-core size accessors, so most of the cascade arrives here with no further work: the temporary shims in `packed_object_info_with_index_pos()` and in `unpack_entry()`'s delta-base recovery path go away, the two `SET_SIZE(entry, cast_size_t_to_ulong(canonical_size))` calls in `check_object()` and the matching one in `drop_reused_delta()` collapse to plain `SET_SIZE`, and `oe_get_size_slow()`'s tail `cast_size_t_to_ulong()` is gone too. What remains narrow are the boundaries this series does not intend to touch: the diff, blame, textconv and fast-import machinery. Even so, this patch is unfortunately quite large. 2026-05-09odb, packfile: use size_t for streaming object sizesJohannes Schindelin1-1/+1
The odb_read_stream structure uses unsigned long for the size field, which is 32-bit on Windows even in 64-bit builds. When streaming objects larger than 4GB, the size would be truncated to zero or an incorrect value, resulting in empty files being written to disk. Change the size field in odb_read_stream to size_t and introduce unpack_object_header_sz() to return sizes via size_t pointer. Since object_info.sizep remains unsigned long for API compatibility, use temporary variables where the types differ, with comments noting the truncation limitation for code paths that still use unsigned long. Widening the producers to size_t in this way introduces a handful of silent size_t -> unsigned long narrowings on Windows, all in builtin/pack-objects.c, where the consumers are still typed unsigned long. Make those narrowings explicit with cast_size_t_to_ulong() so they assert loudly the moment an object actually exceeds ULONG_MAX bytes: - oe_get_size_slow() returns unsigned long but holds a size_t locally; cast at the return. - write_reuse_object() passes a size_t into check_pack_inflate(), whose expect parameter is unsigned long; cast at the call. - check_object() routes a size_t through SET_SIZE() and SET_DELTA_SIZE(), both of which take unsigned long via oe_set_size() / oe_set_delta_size(); cast at the three call sites in the OBJ_OFS_DELTA / OBJ_REF_DELTA branches and in the non-delta default arm. The cast-only treatment is deliberately a stop-gap. Properly widening oe_set_size, oe_get_size_slow's return type, check_pack_inflate's expect parameter, object_info.sizep, patch_delta, and the OE_SIZE_BITS bit-fields cascades into a series that is too large to be reviewable, so the proper widening is deferred to a follow-up topic. Until then, cast_size_t_to_ulong() at least makes the truncation explicit at the source: it documents the boundary, and on a 64-bit non-Windows platform it is a no-op. When trying to print out, say, the hexadecimal representation of a MIDX's hash, our code will do something like: hash_to_hex_algop(midx_get_checksum_hash(m), m->source->odb->repo->hash_algo); , which is both cumbersome and repetitive. In fact, all but a handful of callers to `midx_get_checksum_hash()` do exactly the above. Reduce the repetitive nature of calling `midx_get_checksum_hash()` by having it return a pointer into a static buffer containing the above result. For the handful of callers that do need to compare the raw bytes and don't want to deal with an encoded copy (e.g., because they are passing it to hasheq() or similar), they may still rely on `midx_get_checksum_hash()` which returns the raw bytes. Since 541204aabea (Documentation: document naming schema for structs and their functions, 2024-07-30), we have adopted a naming convention for functions that would prefer a name like, say, `midx_get_checksum()` over `get_midx_checksum()`. Adopt this convention throughout the midx.h API. Since this function returns a raw (that is, non-hex encoded) hash, let's suffix the function with "_hash()" to make this clear. As a side effect, this prepares us for the subsequent change which will introduce a "_hex()" variant that encodes the checksum itself. 2026-02-19pack-bitmap: fix bug with exact ref match in "pack.preferBitmapTips"Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+12
The "pack.preferBitmapTips" configuration allows the user to specify which references should be preferred when generating bitmaps. This option is typically expected to be set to a reference prefix, like for example "refs/heads/". It's not unreasonable though for a user to configure one specific reference as preferred. But if they do, they'll hit a `BUG()`: $ git -c pack.preferBitmapTips=refs/heads/main repack -adb BUG: ../refs/iterator.c:366: attempt to trim too many characters error: pack-objects died of signal 6 The root cause for this bug is how we enumerate these references. We call `refs_for_each_ref_in()`, which will: - Yield all references that have a user-specified prefix. - Trim each of these references so that the prefix is removed. Typically, this function is called with a trailing slash, like "refs/heads/", and in that case things work alright. But if the function is called with the name of an existing reference then we'll try to trim the full reference name, which would leave us with an empty name. And as this would not really leave us with anything sensible, we call `BUG()` instead of yielding this reference. One could argue that this is a bug in `refs_for_each_ref_in()`. But the question then becomes what the correct behaviour would be: - Do we want to skip exact matches? In our case we certainly don't want that, as the user has asked us to generate a bitmap for it. - Do we want to yield the reference with the empty refname? That would lead to a somewhat weird result. Neither of these feel like viable options, so calling `BUG()` feels like a sensible way out. The root cause ultimately is that we even try to trim the whole refname in the first place. There are two possible ways to fix this issue: - We can fix the bug by using `refs_for_each_fullref_in()` instead, which does not strip the prefix at all. Consequently, we would now start to accept all references that start with the configured prefix, including exact matches. So if we had "refs/heads/main", we would both match "refs/heads/main" and "refs/heads/main-branch". - Or we can fix the bug by appending a slash to the prefix if it doesn't already have one. This would mean that we only match ref hierarchies that start with this prefix. While the first fix leaves the user with strictly _more_ configuration options, we have already fixed a similar case in 10e8a9352b (refs.c: stop matching non-directory prefixes in exclude patterns, 2025-03-06) by using the second option. We have two locations that iterate over the preferred bitmap tips as configured by the user via "pack.preferBitmapTips". Both of these callsites are subtly wrong: when the preferred bitmap tips contain an exact refname match, then we will hit a `BUG()`. Prepare for the fix by unifying the two callsites into a new `for_each_preferred_bitmap_tip()` function. This removes the last callsite of `bitmap_preferred_tips()` outside of "pack-bitmap.c". If a bitmap has a name-hash cache, it is an array of 32-bit integers, one per entry in the bitmap, which we've mmap'd from the .bitmap file. We access it directly like this: if (bitmap_git->hashes) hash = get_be32(bitmap_git->hashes + index_pos); That works for both regular pack bitmaps and for non-incremental midx bitmaps. There is one bitmap_index with one "hashes" array, and index_pos is within its bounds (we do the bounds-checking when we load the bitmap). But for an incremental midx bitmap, we have a linked list of bitmap_index structs, and each one has only its own small slice of the name-hash array. If index_pos refers to an object that is not in the first bitmap_git of the chain, then we'll access memory outside of the bounds of its "hashes" array, and often outside of the mmap. Instead, we should walk through the list until we find the bitmap_index which serves our index_pos, and use its hash (after adjusting index_pos to make it relative to the slice we found). This is exactly what we do elsewhere for incremental midx lookups (like the pack_pos_to_midx() call a few lines above). But we can't use existing helpers like midx_for_object() here, because we're walking through the chain of bitmap_index structs (each of which refers to a midx), not the chain of incremental multi_pack_index structs themselves. The problem is triggered in the test suite, but we don't get a segfault because the out-of-bounds index is too small. The OS typically rounds our mmap up to the nearest page size, so we just end up accessing some extra zero'd memory. Nor do we catch it with ASan, since it doesn't seem to instrument mmaps at all. But if we build with NO_MMAP, then our maps are replaced with heap allocations, which ASan does check. And so: make NO_MMAP=1 SANITIZE=address cd t ./t5334-incremental-multi-pack-index.sh does show the problem (and this patch makes it go away). The function `get_multi_pack_index()` loads multi-pack indices via `prepare_packed_git()` and then returns the linked list of multi-pack indices that is stored in `struct object_database`. That list is in the process of being removed though in favor of storing the MIDX as part of the object database source it belongs to. Refactor `get_multi_pack_index()` so that it returns the multi-pack index for a single object source. Callers are now expected to call this function for each source they are interested in. This requires them to iterate through alternates, so we have to prepare alternate object sources before doing so. 2025-07-01pack-bitmap: fix memory leak if load_bitmap() failedTaylor Blau1-17/+4
After going through the "failed" label, load_bitmap() will return -1, and its caller (either prepare_bitmap_walk() or prepare_bitmap_git()) will then call free_bitmap_index(). That function would have done: struct stored_bitmap *sb; kh_foreach_value(b->bitmaps, sb { ewah_pool_free(sb->root); free(sb); }); , but won't since load_bitmap() already called kh_destroy_oid_map() and NULL'd the "bitmaps" pointer from within its "failed" label. Thus if you got part of the way through loading bitmap entries and then failed, you would leak all of the previous entries that you were able to load successfully. The solution is to remove the error handling code in load_bitmap(), because its caller will always call free_bitmap_index() in case of an error. 2025-06-09pack-bitmap: remove checks before bitmap_freeLidong Yan1-2/+2
In pack-bitmap.c:find_boundary_objects(), the roots_bitmap is only freed if cascade_pseudo_merges_1() fails. However, cascade_pseudo_merges_1() uses roots_bitmap as a mutable reference without taking ownership of it. As a result, if cascade_pseudo_merges_1() succeeds, roots_bitmap is leaked. And this leak currently lacks a dedicated test to detect it. To fix this leak, remove if cascade_pseudo_merges_1() succeed check and always calling bitmap_free(roots_bitmap); To trigger this leak, we need roots_bitmap that contains at least one pseudo merge. So that we can use pseudo merge bitmap when we compute roots reachable bitmap. Here we create two commits: first A then B. Add A to the pseudo-merge and perform a traversal over the range A..B. In this scenario, the "haves" set will be {A}, and cascade_pseudo_merges_1 will succeed, thereby exposing the leak due to the missing roots_bitmap cleanup. The `git_open_cloexec()` wrapper function provides the ability to open a file with `O_CLOEXEC` in a platform-agnostic way. This function is provided by "object-file.c" even though it is not specific to the object subsystem at all. Move the file into "compat/open.c". This file already exists before this commit, but has only been compiled conditionally depending on whether or not open(3p) may return EINTR. With this change we now unconditionally compile the object, but wrap `git_open_with_retry()` in an ifdef.
