2026-07-20environment: move has_symlinks into repo_config_valuesTian Yuchen1-1/+3
Move the global 'has_symlinks' configuration into the repository-specific 'repo_config_values' struct. Introduce 'repo_has_symlinks()' getter for readability. Callers access this configuration by passing in 'repo' when possible, and explicitly fall back to 'the_repository' the rest of the time. Introduce 'platform_has_symlinks()' macro to allow platform specific-customization, primarily to help MinGW. Platforms can override this in their respective headers. 2026-07-14environment: move object_creation_mode into repo_config_valuesTian Yuchen1-6/+6
The global variable 'object_creation_mode' controls how Git creates object files, specifically determining whether to use hardlinks or renames when moving temporary files into the object database. Move it into 'struct repo_config_values' to continue the libification effort. Move the 'enum object_creation_mode' definition higher up in 'environment.h' to ensure it is visible to the structure. Initialize the per-repository value to its default macro value OBJECT_CREATION_MODE inside 'repo_config_values_init()'. Update configuration parsing in 'git_default_core_config()' to write directly to the repository-specific configuration structure. 2026-07-14environment: move autorebase into repo_config_valuesTian Yuchen1-8/+8
The global variable 'autorebase' dictates whether a newly created branch should be configured to automatically rebase by default. Move it into 'struct repo_config_values' to continue the libification effort. The 'enum rebase_setup_type' definition is moved higher up in 'environment.h' so that it is visible to the repository-specific structure. The default state AUTOREBASE_NEVER is now correctly initialized in 'repo_config_values_init()'. Configuration parsing in 'git_default_branch_config()' is updated to write directly to the repository's configuration instance. 2026-07-14environment: move push_default into repo_config_valuesTian Yuchen1-10/+16
The global variable 'push_default' specifies the default behavior of 'git push' when no explicit refspec is provided. Move 'push_default' into 'struct repo_config_values' to continue the libification effort. While 'enum push_default_type' ideally belongs in 'remote.h', moving it there introduces a circular dependency chain: remote.h -> hash.h -> repository.h -> environment.h. Therefore, the enum definition is kept in 'environment.h' just above 'struct repo_config_values' with a NEEDSWORK comment for future cleanup. Modify the configuration parsing in environment.c to update the per-repository structure directly, and update caller across the codebase to access the value via 'repo_config_values()'. 2026-07-14environment: migrate apply_default_whitespace and apply_default_ignorewhitespaceTian Yuchen1-2/+2
The global variables 'apply_default_whitespace' and 'apply_default_ignorewhitespace' are used to store the default whitespace configuration for 'git apply'. Move these variables into 'struct repo_config_values' to continue the libification effort. Dynamically allocated strings fetched via 'repo_config_get_string()' are now tracked per-repository and safely freed in 'repo_config_values_clear()'. As part of this transition, update 'git_apply_config()' to accept a 'struct repository *' argument rather than relying on the 'the_repository' global. 2026-07-14environment: move askpass_program into repo_config_valuesTian Yuchen1-2/+1
The global variable 'askpass_program' stores the path to the program used to prompt the user for credentials. Move it into repo_config_values to continue the libification effort. While it is uncommon for a single process to require different askpass programs for different repositories, maintaining this value as a mutable global string is a blocker for libification. Global heap-allocated strings introduce thread-safety issues in a multi-repo environment. Move 'askpass_program' into 'struct repo_config_values' to eliminate this global state. The memory is now safely managed and freed via 'repo_config_values_clear()'. 2026-07-14environment: move pager_program into repo_config_valuesTian Yuchen1-0/+1
The 'pager_program' variable is currently defined as a file-scoped static string in pager.c. Move it into 'struct repo_config_values'. The configuration parsing logic remains strictly within pager.c to respect subsystem boundaries. The read/write operations are simply redirected to the repository-specific structure using 'repo_config_values()'. All current callers indeed pass 'the_repository', so this new enforcement does not harm them. Similar to the recent editor_program migration, no standalone getter is introduced to keep the code minimal. The dynamically allocated memory is now managed by 'repo_config_values_clear()'. On top of that, fix memory leaks in pager.c while we are at it. 2026-07-14environment: move editor_program into repo_config_valuesTian Yuchen1-1/+1
The global variable 'editor_program' holds the path to the user's preferred editor. Move 'editor_program' into 'struct repo_config_values' to continue the libification effort. There have been discussions on whether external programs like editors truly need to be configured on a per-repository basis within the same process. While a single process might rarely invoke different editors, this migration is necessary for two reasons: 1. Developers frequently use different toolchains for different projects. Per-repo configuration respects this. 2. Moving this string into 'repo_config_values' eliminates mutable global state. As the codebase moves toward becoming a long-running processes, managing multiple repositories concurrently must not overwrite each other's program configurations. No standalone getter function is introduced. Callers directly access the field via 'repo_config_values()'. Heap memory is safely reclaimed in 'repo_config_values_clear()'. 2026-07-14environment: move excludes_file into repo_config_valuesTian Yuchen1-1/+3
The global variable 'excludes_file' is used to track the path to the global ignore file. If this variable is NULL, 'setup_standard_excludes()' in 'dir.c' forcefully evaluates and assigns the XDG default path to it. Continue the libification effort by encapsulating this lazy-loading fallback logic into a proper getter and moving the variable into 'struct repo_config_values'. Since 'excludes_file' is a dynamically allocated string, it requires proper heap memory management. It is safely freed using the newly introduced 'repo_config_values_clear()' function when the repository is torn down. 2026-07-14repository: introduce repo_config_values_clear()Tian Yuchen1-0/+9
As part of the ongoing libification effort, dynamically allocated global configuration variables are being moved into 'struct repo_config_values'. To prevent memory leaks, we need a destructor to free these heap-allocated variables when a repository instance is torn down. Introduce 'repo_config_values_clear()' in environment.c and invoke it from 'repo_clear()' in repository.c. As a starting point, update this new function to handle the cleanup of 'attributes_file'. 2026-06-19config: use repo_ignore_case() to access core.ignorecaseTian Yuchen1-1/+0
Replace the accesses to the global 'ignore_case' variable with calls to 'repo_ignore_case(the_repository)'. This step eliminates the 'ignore_case' global state. Note on compat/win32/path-utils.c: To eliminate the global state, several helper functions (e.g. 'win32_fspathncmp()') now read from 'repo_ignore_case(the_repository)'. While this introduces dependency on 'repository.h' into the 'compat/', it avoids massive refactoring of the signatures across the codebase. Refactor `is_bare_repository()` to take in a repository parameter so that we no longer depend on `the_repository`. Adjust callers accordingly. 2026-06-11environment: split up concerns of `is_bare_repository_cfg`Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+0
The `is_bare_repository_cfg` variable tracks two different pieces of information: - It tracks whether the user has invoked git with the "--bare" flag, which makes us treat any discovered Git repository as if it was a bare repository. - Otherwise it tracks whether the discovered `the_repository` is bare. This makes the flag extremely confusing and creates a bit of a challenge when handling multiple repositories in the same process. Split up the concerns of this variable into two pieces: - `startup_info.force_bare_repository` tracks whether the user has passed the "--bare" flag. This is used as a hint to treat newly set up repositories as bare regardless of whether or not they have a worktree. - `struct repository::bare_cfg` tracks whether or not a repository is considered bare. This takes into account both whether the user has passed "--bare" and the discovered state of the repository itself. Whether or not a repository is bare is now resolved when checking the repository's format, and is then later applied to the repository itself via `apply_repository_format()`. This enables a subsequent change where we make `is_bare_repository()` not depend on global state anymore. 2026-06-11builtin/init: stop modifying global `git_work_tree_cfg` variablePatrick Steinhardt1-1/+0
When executing git-init(1) we need to figure out the final location of the worktree. This location can be configured in a couple of ways: via an environment variable, via the preexisting "core.worktree" config in case we're reinitializing, or implicitly when reinitializing a non-bare repository. When checking for the worktree location in "builtin/init-db.c" we populate any potentially-discovered value both by setting the global `git_work_tree_cfg` variable and via `set_git_work_tree()`, which ultimately ends up modifying `struct repository::worktree`. Modifying `git_work_tree_cfg` is unnecessary though: we configure the worktree in `create_default_files()`, and that function derives the worktree location via `repo_get_work_tree()`. Consequently, propagating the worktree via `set_git_work_tree()` is sufficient. Stop munging `git_work_tree_cfg` and make it file-local to "setup.c" and function-local to `cmd_init_db()`. Stop using `the_repository` in `setup_git_env()` and instead accept the repository as a parameter. The injection of `the_repository` is thus bumped one level higher, where callers now pass it in explicitly. Furthermore, the function is never used outside of "setup.c". The config value `branch.autoSetupMerge` is parsed in `git_default_branch_config()` and stored in the global variable `git_branch_track`. This global variable can be overwritten by another repository when multiple Git repos run in the the same process. Move this value into `struct repo_config_values` in the_repository to retain current behaviours and move towards libifying Git. Since the variable is no longer a global variable, it has been renamed to `branch_track` in the struct `repo_config_values`. 2026-02-25refs: add GIT_REFERENCE_BACKEND to specify reference backendKarthik Nayak1-0/+1
Git allows setting a different object directory via 'GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY', but provides no equivalent for references. In the previous commit we extended the 'extensions.refStorage' config to also support an URI input for reference backend with location. Let's also add a new environment variable 'GIT_REFERENCE_BACKEND' that takes in the same input as the config variable. Having an environment variable allows us to modify the reference backend and location on the fly for individual Git commands. The environment variable also allows usage of alternate reference directories during 'git-clone(1)' and 'git-init(1)'. Add the config to the repository when created with the environment variable set. When initializing the repository with an alternate reference folder, create the required stubs in the repositories $GIT_DIR. The inverse, i.e. removal of the ref store doesn't clean up the stubs in the $GIT_DIR since that would render it unusable. Removal of ref store is only used when migrating between ref formats and cleanup of the $GIT_DIR doesn't make sense in such a situation. 2026-02-17environment: stop storing `core.attributesFile` globallyOlamide Caleb Bello1-1/+10
The `core.attributeFile` config value is parsed in git_default_core_config(), loaded eagerly and stored in the global variable `git_attributes_file`. Storing this value in a global variable can lead to it being overwritten by another repository when more than one Git repository run in the same Git process. Create a new struct `repo_config_values` to hold this value and other repository dependent values parsed by `git_default_config()`. This will ensure the current behaviour remains the same while also enabling the libification of Git. An accessor function 'repo_config_values()' s created to ensure that we do not access an uninitialized repository, or an instance of a different repository than the current one. 2026-01-09init: do parse _all_ core.* settings earlyJohannes Schindelin1-0/+2
In Git for Windows, `has_symlinks` is set to 0 by default. Therefore, we need to parse the config setting `core.symlinks` to know if it has been set to `true`. In `git init`, we must do that before copying the templates because they might contain symbolic links. Even if the support for symbolic links on Windows has not made it to upstream Git yet, we really should make sure that all the `core.*` settings are parsed before proceeding, as they might very well change the behavior of `git init` in a way the user intended. 2025-08-26config: warn on core.commentString=autoPhillip Wood1-0/+1
As support for this setting was deprecated in the last commit print a warning (or die when WITH_BREAKING_CHANGES is enabled) if it is set. Avoid bombarding the user with warnings by only printing it (a) when running commands that call "git commit" and (b) only once per command. Some scaffolding is added to repo_read_config() to allow it to detect deprecated config settings and warn about them. As both "core.commentChar" and "core.commentString" set the comment character we record which one of them is used and tailor the warning message appropriately. Note the odd combination of die_message() followed by die(NULL) is to allow the next commit to insert a call to advise() in the middle. 2025-08-26breaking-changes: deprecate support for core.commentString=autoPhillip Wood1-0/+2
When "core.commentString" is set to "auto" then "git commit" will automatically select the comment character ensuring that it is not the first character on any of the lines in the commit message. This was introduced by commit 84c9dc2c5a2 (commit: allow core.commentChar=auto for character auto selection, 2014-05-17). The motivation seems to be to avoid commenting out lines from the existing message when amending a commit that was created with a message from a file. Unfortunately this feature does not work with: * commit message templates that contain comments. * prepare-commit-msg hooks that introduce comments. * "git commit --cleanup=strip --edit -F <file>" which means that it is incompatible with - the "fixup" and "squash" commands of "git rebase -i" as the comments added by those commands are then treated as part of the commit message. - the conflict comments added to the commit message by "git cherry-pick", "git rebase" etc. as these comments are then treated as part of the commit message. It is also ignored by "git notes" when amending a note. The issues with comments coming from a template, hook or file are a consequence of the design of this feature and are therefore hard to fix. As the costs of this feature outweigh the benefits, deprecate it and remove it in Git 3.0. If someone comes up with some patches that fix all the issues in a maintainable way then I'd be happy to see this change reverted. The next commits will add a warning and some advice for users on how they can update their config settings. 2025-07-23config: move Git config parsing into "environment.c"Patrick Steinhardt1-0/+3
In "config.c" we host both the business logic to read and write config files as well as the logic to parse specific Git-related variables. On the one hand this is mixing concerns, but even more importantly it means that we cannot easily remove the dependency on `the_repository` in our config parsing logic. Move the logic into "environment.c". This file is a grab bag of all kinds of global state already, so it is quite a good fit. Furthermore, it also hosts most of the global variables that we're parsing the config values into, making this an even better fit. Note that there is one hidden change: in `parse_fsync_components()` we use an `int` to iterate through `ARRAY_SIZE(fsync_component_names)`. But as -Wsign-compare warnings are enabled in this file this causes a compiler warning. The issue is fixed by using a `size_t` instead. This change allows us to drop the `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` declaration. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2025-03-10environment: move access to "core.bigFileThreshold" into repo settingsPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+0
The "core.bigFileThreshold" setting is stored in a global variable and populated via `git_default_core_config()`. This may cause issues in the case where one is handling multiple different repositories in a single process with different values for that config key, as we may or may not see the correct value in that case. Furthermore, global state blocks our path towards libification. Refactor the code so that we instead store the value in `struct repo_settings`, where the value is computed as-needed and cached. Note that this change requires us to adapt one test in t1050 that verifies that we die when parsing an invalid "core.bigFileThreshold" value. The exercised Git command doesn't use the value at all, and thus it won't hit the new code path that parses the value. This is addressed by using git-hash-object(1) instead, which does read the value. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
