The 'pager_program' variable is currently defined as a file-scoped static string in pager.c. Move it into 'struct repo_config_values'. The configuration parsing logic remains strictly within pager.c to respect subsystem boundaries. The read/write operations are simply redirected to the repository-specific structure using 'repo_config_values()'. All current callers indeed pass 'the_repository', so this new enforcement does not harm them. Similar to the recent editor_program migration, no standalone getter is introduced to keep the code minimal. The dynamically allocated memory is now managed by 'repo_config_values_clear()'. On top of that, fix memory leaks in pager.c while we are at it. The global variable 'editor_program' holds the path to the user's preferred editor. Move 'editor_program' into 'struct repo_config_values' to continue the libification effort. There have been discussions on whether external programs like editors truly need to be configured on a per-repository basis within the same process. While a single process might rarely invoke different editors, this migration is necessary for two reasons: 1. Developers frequently use different toolchains for different projects. Per-repo configuration respects this. 2. Moving this string into 'repo_config_values' eliminates mutable global state. As the codebase moves toward becoming a long-running processes, managing multiple repositories concurrently must not overwrite each other's program configurations. No standalone getter function is introduced. Callers directly access the field via 'repo_config_values()'. Heap memory is safely reclaimed in 'repo_config_values_clear()'. If this variable is NULL, 'setup_standard_excludes()' in 'dir.c' forcefully evaluates and assigns the XDG default path to it. Continue the libification effort by encapsulating this lazy-loading fallback logic into a proper getter and moving the variable into 'struct repo_config_values'. Since 'excludes_file' is a dynamically allocated string, it requires proper heap memory management. The `is_bare_repository_cfg` variable tracks two different pieces of information: - It tracks whether the user has invoked git with the "--bare" flag, which makes us treat any discovered Git repository as if it was a bare repository. - Otherwise it tracks whether the discovered `the_repository` is bare. This makes the flag extremely confusing and creates a bit of a challenge when handling multiple repositories in the same process. Split up the concerns of this variable into two pieces: - `startup_info.force_bare_repository` tracks whether the user has passed the "--bare" flag. This is used as a hint to treat newly set up repositories as bare regardless of whether or not they have a worktree. - `struct repository::bare_cfg` tracks whether or not a repository is considered bare. This takes into account both whether the user has passed "--bare" and the discovered state of the repository itself. Whether or not a repository is bare is now resolved when checking the repository's format, and is then later applied to the repository itself via `apply_repository_format()`. This enables a subsequent change where we make `is_bare_repository()` not depend on global state anymore. 2026-06-11builtin/init: stop modifying global `git_work_tree_cfg` variablePatrick Steinhardt1-3/+0
When executing git-init(1) we need to figure out the final location of the worktree. This location can be configured in a couple of ways: via an environment variable, via the preexisting "core.worktree" config in case we're reinitializing, or implicitly when reinitializing a non-bare repository. When checking for the worktree location in "builtin/init-db.c" we populate any potentially-discovered value both by setting the global `git_work_tree_cfg` variable and via `set_git_work_tree()`, which ultimately ends up modifying `struct repository::worktree`. Modifying `git_work_tree_cfg` is unnecessary though: we configure the worktree in `create_default_files()`, and that function derives the worktree location via `repo_get_work_tree()`. Consequently, propagating the worktree via `set_git_work_tree()` is sufficient. Stop munging `git_work_tree_cfg` and make it file-local to "setup.c" and function-local to `cmd_init_db()`. 2026-01-22lockfile: add PID file for debugging stale locksPaulo Casaretto1-0/+6
When a lock file is held, it can be helpful to know which process owns it, especially when debugging stale locks left behind by crashed processes. Add an optional feature that creates a companion PID file alongside each lock file, containing the PID of the lock holder. For a lock file "foo.lock", the PID file is named "foo~pid.lock". The tilde character is forbidden in refnames and allowed in Windows filenames, which guarantees no collision with the refs namespace (e.g., refs "foo" and "foo~pid" cannot both exist). The file contains a single line in the format "pid <value>" followed by a newline. The PID file is created when a lock is acquired (if enabled), and automatically cleaned up when the lock is released (via commit or rollback). The file is registered as a tempfile so it gets cleaned up by signal and atexit handlers if the process terminates abnormally. When a lock conflict occurs, the code checks for an existing PID file and, if found, uses kill(pid, 0) to determine if the process is still running. This allows providing context-aware error messages: Lock is held by process 12345. Wait for it to finish, or remove the lock file to continue. Or for a stale lock: Lock was held by process 12345, which is no longer running. Remove the stale lock file to continue. The feature is controlled via core.lockfilePid configuration (boolean). Defaults to false. When enabled, PID files are created for all lock operations. Existing PID files are always read when displaying lock errors, regardless of the core.lockfilePid setting. This ensures helpful diagnostics even when the feature was previously enabled and later disabled. In Git for Windows, `has_symlinks` is set to 0 by default. Therefore, we need to parse the config setting `core.symlinks` to know if it has been set to `true`. In `git init`, we must do that before copying the templates because they might contain symbolic links. Even if the support for symbolic links on Windows has not made it to upstream Git yet, we really should make sure that all the `core.*` settings are parsed before proceeding, as they might very well change the behavior of `git init` in a way the user intended. As support for this setting was deprecated in the last commit print a warning (or die when WITH_BREAKING_CHANGES is enabled) if it is set. Avoid bombarding the user with warnings by only printing it (a) when running commands that call "git commit" and (b) only once per command. Some scaffolding is added to repo_read_config() to allow it to detect deprecated config settings and warn about them. As both "core.commentChar" and "core.commentString" set the comment character we record which one of them is used and tailor the warning message appropriately. Note the odd combination of die_message() followed by die(NULL) is to allow the next commit to insert a call to advise() in the middle. When "core.commentString" is set to "auto" then "git commit" will automatically select the comment character ensuring that it is not the first character on any of the lines in the commit message. This was introduced by commit 84c9dc2c5a2 (commit: allow core.commentChar=auto for character auto selection, 2014-05-17). The motivation seems to be to avoid commenting out lines from the existing message when amending a commit that was created with a message from a file. Unfortunately this feature does not work with: * commit message templates that contain comments. * prepare-commit-msg hooks that introduce comments. * "git commit --cleanup=strip --edit -F <file>" which means that it is incompatible with - the "fixup" and "squash" commands of "git rebase -i" as the comments added by those commands are then treated as part of the commit message. - the conflict comments added to the commit message by "git cherry-pick", "git rebase" etc. as these comments are then treated as part of the commit message. It is also ignored by "git notes" when amending a note. The issues with comments coming from a template, hook or file are a consequence of the design of this feature and are therefore hard to fix. As the costs of this feature outweigh the benefits, deprecate it and remove it in Git 3.0. If someone comes up with some patches that fix all the issues in a maintainable way then I'd be happy to see this change reverted. The next commits will add a warning and some advice for users on how they can update their config settings. environment.c:get_git_namespace() learns the raw namespace from an environment variable, splits it at "/", and appends them after "refs/namespaces/"; the reason why it splits first is so that an empty string resulting from double slashes can be omitted. The split pieces do not need to be edited in any way, so an array of strbufs is a wrong data structure to use. Instead split into a string list and use the pieces from there. In "config.c" we host both the business logic to read and write config files as well as the logic to parse specific Git-related variables. On the one hand this is mixing concerns, but even more importantly it means that we cannot easily remove the dependency on `the_repository` in our config parsing logic. Move the logic into "environment.c". This file is a grab bag of all kinds of global state already, so it is quite a good fit. Furthermore, it also hosts most of the global variables that we're parsing the config values into, making this an even better fit. Note that there is one hidden change: in `parse_fsync_components()` we use an `int` to iterate through `ARRAY_SIZE(fsync_component_names)`. But as -Wsign-compare warnings are enabled in this file this causes a compiler warning. The issue is fixed by using a `size_t` instead.
