'git checkout' and 'git worktree add' makes guesses based on a name
of a remote-tracking branch, but does not give an error when such a
remote-tracking branch cannot be uniquely identified, which has
been corrected.

The DWIM logic in 'git worktree add' sometimes tried to infer a
remote-tracking branch when an explicit '-b' or '-B' option was
given to create a new branch, causing the explicit branch name to
be ignored, which has been corrected.

When 'git worktree add <path>' is invoked without <commit-ish> and
with the --guess-remote option (or when worktree.guessRemote is set to
true), it tries to find a remote-tracking branch matching the basename
of <path>.
Currently, the behavior when multiple matches are found is the same as
when no match is found: it falls back to creating a branch from
HEAD. This has been the behavior since 71d6682d8c (worktree: add
--guess-remote option to add subcommand, 2017-11-29), when the option
was first introduced.
However, if the specified <path> matches any remote-tracking branch,
we infer that the user intended to use one of the remote-tracking
branches as the start-point rather than HEAD. So we abort the creation
of the branch and worktree when there are multiple matches, and
instruct the user to choose the start-point.

When the user runs 'git worktree add ../foo-dir bar-topic' without
specifying a remote, and there is no local branch named bar-topic, we
try to guess which remote branch bar-topic refers to, then create a
new branch named bar-topic that tracks the remote branch.
If multiple remotes have a branch named bar-topic, we silently gave
up, leaving the variable 'branch' intact. We then entered the
conditional clause 'if (!opts.orphan &&
!lookup_commit_reference_by_name(branch))' and triggered an "invalid
reference" error. This error message did not provide enough
information to resolve the ambiguity.
When multiple matching branches are found, display a hint and a
descriptive error message and die immediately.

When the user runs 'git checkout bar-topic' without specifying a
remote, and there is no local branch named bar-topic, we try to guess
which remote branch bar-topic refers to, then create a new branch
named bar-topic that tracks the remote branch.
If multiple remotes have a branch named bar-topic, we cannot determine
a single remote.
To make it easier to resolve the ambiguity, provide the names of the
matching remotes for the specified branch name.
To achieve that, add an optional feature to the
`unique_tracking_name()` function that allows the matching remote
names to be exposed to the caller.

worktree_basename() requires callers to do pointer arithmetic to get the
actual basename. Simplify them by doing the calculations in the
function and returning a copy of the basename directly.
Remind programmers to free the result by renaming the function to
worktree_basename_dup(). Among the three callers of the original
function, two immediately make copies of the returned string before
using and freeing it, which makes for an easy conversion. Convert
the other one from resetting a shared strbuf to freeing the
allocated string, which requires the same number of lines, but no
arithmetic. The added allocation is negligible because it's small
and there's only one per run of "git worktree add".

worktree_basename() sets `n` to the length of `path` without trailing
path separators, not to the length of the basename. This matters when
deriving a branch name from a path with more than one component. E.g.:
path: /new/worktree/
s: ^
n: |-----------|
So here xstrndup(s, n) copies up to 13 characters from "worktree/",
effectively to the end of the string, including the trailing dash.
Path separators are not allowed at the end of branch names, so strip
them off by calculating the basename length and extracting just that
part.

worktree_basename() extracts an empty basename from a path consisting
only of zero or more path separators. We can't use that as a worktree
name. Properly report such a path as invalid instead of triggering a
BUG that asks the user what just happened.

When we search for the start of the basename and `len` is zero, `name`
ends up being `path` - 1, out of bounds. Avoid that by checking before
decrementing.

'git worktree add <path> <branch>' DWIMs <branch> to a
remote-tracking branch when neither -b, -B, nor --detach
is given.
However, 'git worktree add -b <new-branch> <path> <branch>' can
still DWIM <branch>, causing <new-branch> to be ignored. This is a
regression introduced by 128e5496b3 (worktree add: extend DWIM to
infer --orphan, 2023-05-17), which appeared in Git 2.42.

The ref subsystem and the worktree API have been refactored to pass a
repository pointer down the call chain, allowing them to drop

When copying a file we need to potentially adapt permissions of the new
file based on whether or not "core.shared" is enabled. Parsing this
configuration makes us implicitly depend on `the_repository`.
Refactor the code to instead require the caller to pass in a repository
so that we can remove `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE`.

In the "add" subcommand, when `run_command()` fails while creating a new
branch (line 948), the function returns -1 immediately without freeing
the allocations made earlier: path (from prefix_filename at line 858),
opt_track, branch_to_free, and new_branch_to_free.
Redirect the error return through the existing cleanup block at the end
of the function so all four allocations are properly freed.

Several hooks are known to be inherently non-parallelizable, so initialize
them with RUN_HOOKS_OPT_INIT_FORCE_SERIAL. This pins jobs=1 and overrides
any hook.jobs or runtime -j flags.
These hooks are:
applypatch-msg, pre-commit, prepare-commit-msg, commit-msg, post-commit,
post-checkout, and push-to-checkout.

The function can_use_local_refs() prints a warning if there are no local
branches and HEAD is invalid or points to an unborn branch. As part of
the warning it prints the contents of ".git/HEAD". In a repository using
the reftable backend HEAD is not stored in the filesystem so reading
that file is pointless. In a repository using the files backend it is
unclear how useful printing it is - it would be better to diagnose the
problem for the user. For now, simplify the warning by not printing
the file contents and adjust the relevant test case accordingly. Also
fixup the test case to use test_grep so that anyone trying to debug a
test failure in the future is not met by a wall of silence.

write_worktree_linking_files() takes two struct strbuf parameters by
value, even though it only reads path strings from them.
Passing a strbuf by value is misleading and dangerous. The structure
carries a pointer to its underlying character array; caller and callee
end up sharing that storage. If the callee ever causes the strbuf to
be reallocated, the caller's copy becomes a dangling pointer, which
results in a double-free when the caller does strbuf_release().
The function only needs the string values, not the strbuf machinery.
Switch it to take const char * and update all callers to pass .buf.

The config value `core.sparseCheckout` is parsed in
`git_default_core_config()` and stored globally in
`core_apply_sparse_checkout`. This could cause it to be overwritten
by another repository when different Git repositories run in the same
process.
Move the parsed value into `struct repo_config_values` in the_repository
to retain current behaviours and move towards libifying Git.

The 'extensions.refStorage' config is used to specify the reference
backend for a given repository. Both the 'files' and 'reftable' backends
utilize the $GIT_DIR as the reference folder by default in
`get_main_ref_store()`.
Since the reference backends are pluggable, this means that they could
work with out-of-tree reference directories too. Extend the 'refStorage'
config to also support taking an URI input, where users can specify the
reference backend and the location.
Add the required changes to obtain and propagate this value to the
individual backends. Add the necessary documentation and tests.
Traditionally, for linked worktrees, references were stored in the
'$GIT_DIR/worktrees/<wt_id>' path. But when using an alternate reference
storage path, it doesn't make sense to store the main worktree
references in the new path, and the linked worktree references in the
$GIT_DIR. So, let's store linked worktree references in
'$ALTERNATE_REFERENCE_DIR/worktrees/<wt_id>'. To do this, create the
necessary files and folders while also adding stubs in the $GIT_DIR path
to ensure that it is still considered a Git directory.
Ideally, we would want to pass in a `struct worktree *` to individual
backends, instead of passing the `gitdir`. This allows them to handle
worktree specific logic. Currently, that is not possible since the
worktree code is:
- Tied to using the global `the_repository` variable.
- Is not setup before the reference database during initialization of
the repository.
Add a TODO in 'refs.c' to ensure we can eventually make that change.

worktree_git_path() takes a struct repository and a struct worktree
which also contains a struct repository. The repository argument
was added by a973f60dc7c (path: stop relying on `the_repository` in
`worktree_git_path()`, 2024-08-13) and exists because the worktree
argument is optional. Having two ways of passing a repository is
a potential foot-gun as if the the worktree argument is present the
repository argument must match the worktree's repository member. Since
the last commit there are no callers that pass a NULL worktree so lets
remove the repository argument. This removes the potential confusion
and lets us delete a number of uses of "the_repository".
worktree_git_path() has the following callers:
- builtin/worktree.c:validate_no_submodules() which is called from
check_clean_worktree() and move_worktree(), both of which supply
a non-NULL worktree.
- builtin/fsck.c:cmd_fsck() which loops over all worktrees.
- revision.c:add_index_objects_to_pending() which loops over all
worktrees.
- worktree.c:worktree_lock_reason() which dereferences wt before
calling worktree_git_path().
- wt-status.c:wt_status_check_bisect() and wt_status_check_rebase()
which are always called with a non-NULL worktree after the last
commit.
- wt-status.c:git_branch() which is only called by
wt_status_check_bisect() and wt_status_check_rebase().

The help text and the documentation for the "--expire" option of
"git worktree [list|prune]" have been improved.

The --expire option for "git worktree list" and "git worktree prune"
only affects worktrees whose working directory path no longer exists.
The help text did not make this clear, and the documentation
inconsistently used "unused" for prune but "missing" for list.
Update the help text and documentation to consistently describe these
as "missing worktrees", and use "prune" instead of "expire" when
describing the effect on missing worktrees since the terminology is
clearer.
While at it, expand the description of the "prune" subcommand itself
to better explain what it does and when to use it, as suggested by
Junio.

"git worktree list" attempts to show paths to worktrees while
aligning them, but miscounted display columns for the paths when
non-ASCII characters were involved, which has been corrected.

If a worktree path contains newlines or other control characters
it messes up the output of "git worktree list". Fix this by using
quote_path() to display the worktree path. The output of "git worktree
list" is designed for human consumption, scripts should be using the
"--porcelain" option so this change should not break them.

The output of "git worktree list" displays a table containing the
worktree path, HEAD OID and branch name for each worktree. The code
aligns the columns by measuring the visual width of the worktree path
when it is printed. Unfortunately it fails to use the visual width
when calculating the width of the column so, if any of the paths
contain a multibyte character, we can end up with excess padding
between columns. The simplest fix would be to replace strlen() with
utf8_strwidth() in measure_widths(). However that leaves us measuring
the visual width twice and the byte length once. By caching the visual
width and printing the padding separately to the worktree path, we only
need to calculate the visual width once and do not need the byte length
at all. The visual widths are stored in an arrays of structs rather
than an array of ints as the next commit will add more struct members.
Even if there are no multibyte characters in any of the paths we still
print an extra space between the path and the object id as the field
width is calculated as one plus the length of the path and we print an
explicit space as well. This is fixed by not printing the extra space.
The tests are updated to include multibyte characters in one of the
worktree paths and to check the spacing of the columns.

The `each_ref_fn` callback function type is used across our code base
for several different functions that iterate through reference. There's
a bunch of callbacks implementing this type, which makes any changes to
the callback signature extremely noisy. An example of the required churn
is e8207717f1 (refs: add referent to each_ref_fn, 2024-08-09): adding a
single argument required us to change 48 files.
It was already proposed back then [1] that we might want to introduce a
wrapper structure to alleviate the pain going forward. While this of
course requires the same kind of global refactoring as just introducing
a new parameter, it at least allows us to more change the callback type
afterwards by just extending the wrapper structure.
One counterargument to this refactoring is that it makes the structure
more opaque. While it is obvious which callsites need to be fixed up
when we change the function type, it's not obvious anymore once we use
a structure. That being said, we only have a handful of sites that
actually need to populate this wrapper structure: our ref backends,
"refs/iterator.c" as well as very few sites that invoke the iterator
callback functions directly.
Introduce this wrapper structure so that we can adapt the iterator
interfaces more readily.

In 036876a1067 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by
default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the
config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have
been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that
takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll
eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global
repository variable explicit at the callsite.
Follow through with that intent and remove
`git_config_set_multivar_in_file_gently()`. All callsites are adjusted
so that they use
`repo_config_set_multivar_in_file_gently(the_repository, ...)` instead.
While some callsites might already have a repository available, this
mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and
thus cannot cause any regression. Those sites should eventually be
cleaned up in a later patch series.

The `safe_create_leading_directories()` function and its relatives are
located in "object-file.c", which is not a good fit as they provide
generic functionality not related to objects at all. Move them into
"path.c", which already hosts `safe_create_dir()` and its relative
`safe_create_dir_in_gitdir()`.
"path.c" is free of `the_repository`, but the moved functions depend on
`the_repository` to read the "core.sharedRepository" config. Adapt the
function signature to accept a repository as argument to fix the issue
and adjust callers accordingly.

The `null_oid()` function returns the object ID that only consists of
zeroes. Naturally, this ID also depends on the hash algorithm used, as
the number of zeroes is different between SHA1 and SHA256. Consequently,
the function returns the hash-algorithm-specific null object ID.
This is currently done by depending on `the_hash_algo`, which implicitly
makes us depend on `the_repository`. Refactor the function to instead
pass in the hash algorithm for which we want to retrieve the null object
ID. Adapt callsites accordingly by passing in `the_repository`, thus
bubbling up the dependency on that global variable by one layer.
There are a couple of trivial exceptions for subsystems that already got
rid of `the_repository`. These subsystems instead use the repository
that is available via the calling context:
- "builtin/grep.c"
- "grep.c"
- "refs/debug.c"
There are also two non-trivial exceptions:
- "diff-no-index.c": Here we know that we may not have a repository
initialized at all, so we cannot rely on `the_repository`. Instead,
we adapt `diff_no_index()` to get a `struct git_hash_algo` as
parameter. The only caller is located in "builtin/diff.c", where we
know to call `repo_set_hash_algo()` in case we're running outside of
a Git repository. Consequently, it is fine to continue passing
`the_repository->hash_algo` even in this case.
- "builtin/ls-files.c": There is an in-flight patch series that drops
`USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` in this file, which causes a semantic
conflict because we use `null_oid()` in `show_submodule()`. The
value is passed to `repo_submodule_init()`, which may use the object
ID to resolve a tree-ish in the superproject from which we want to
read the submodule config. As such, the object ID should refer to an
object in the superproject, and consequently we need to use its hash
algorithm.
This means that we could in theory just not bother about this edge
case at all and just use `the_repository` in "diff-no-index.c". But
doing so would feel misdesigned.
Remove the `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` preprocessor define in
"hash.c".

Remove `git_path()` in favor of the `repo_git_path()` family of
functions, which makes the implicit dependency on `the_repository` go
away.
Note that `git_path()` returned a string allocated via `get_pathname()`,
which uses a rotating set of statically allocated buffers. Consequently,
callers didn't have to free the returned string. The same isn't true for

Remove `git_common_path()` in favor of the `repo_common_path()` family
of functions, which makes the implicit dependency on `the_repository` go
away.
Note that `git_common_path()` used to return a string allocated via
`get_pathname()`, which uses a rotating set of statically allocated
buffers. Consequently, callers didn't have to free the returned string.
The same isn't true for `repo_common_path()`, so we also have to add
logic to free the returned strings.
This refactoring also allows us to remove `repo_common_pathv()` from the
public interface.

The `get_worktree_git_dir()` function returns a string constant that
does not need to be free'd by the caller. This string is computed for
three different cases:
- If we don't have a worktree we return a path into the Git directory.
The returned string is owned by `the_repository`, so there is no
need for the caller to free it.
- If we have a worktree, but no worktree ID then the caller requests
the main worktree. In this case we return a path into the common
directory, which again is owned by `the_repository` and thus does
not need to be free'd.
- In the third case, where we have an actual worktree, we compute the
path relative to "$GIT_COMMON_DIR/worktrees/". This string does not
need to be released either, even though `git_common_path()` ends up
allocating memory. But this doesn't result in a memory leak either
because we write into a buffer returned by `get_pathname()`, which
returns one out of four static buffers.
We're about to drop `git_common_path()` in favor of `repo_common_path()`,
which doesn't use the same mechanism but instead returns an allocated
string owned by the caller. While we could adapt `get_worktree_git_dir()`
to also use `get_pathname()` and print the derived common path into that
buffer, the whole schema feels a lot like premature optimization in this
context. There are some callsites where we call `get_worktree_git_dir()`
in a loop that iterates through all worktrees. But none of these loops
seem to be even remotely in the hot path, so saving a single allocation
there does not feel worth it.
Refactor the function to instead consistently return an allocated path
so that we can start using `repo_common_path()` in a subsequent commit.

Mark code units that generate warnings with `-Wsign-compare`. This

The helper functions (strbuf_branchname, strbuf_check_branch_ref,
and strbuf_check_tag_ref) are about handling branch and tag names,
and it is a non-essential fact that these functions use strbuf to
hold these names. Rename them to make it clarify that these are
more about "ref".
