2026-08-20odb/transaction: add transaction finalize interfaceJustin Tobler1-2/+2
When committing an ODB transaction via `odb_transaction_commit()`, the staged objects are made visible and the underlying transaction is freed at the same time. Coupling these two steps does not leave room for any post-commit transaction operations to be introduced though. Such a capability is useful if an ODB transaction backend needs to hold on to lockfiles after transaction commit until references are updated, as is the case with the existing "files" backend in git-receive-pack(1). Stop freeing the transaction in `odb_transaction_commit()` and introduce `odb_transaction_finalize()` to explicitly clean up the transaction accordingly. Note that the finalize interface also provides an optional callback for any backend-specific deferred cleanup. In a subsequent commit, the "files" transaction backend will use this to remove ".keep" files generated for packfiles received via git-receive-pack(1) after references have been updated. In preparation for this, the `odb_transaction_finalize()` call site in git-receive-pack(1) is made after the reference updates are finished. All other callers commit a transaction and immediately finalize it without any work happening in between those two operations. Consequently, they cannot meaningfully recover in case either of them would fail, and spelling out these two separate steps with proper error handling would be quite repetitive and pointless. Introduce a helper `odb_transaction_commit_and_finalize_or_die()` for those call sites and update them accordingly. 2026-07-20read-cache: pass 'repo' to 'ce_mode_from_stat()'Tian Yuchen1-1/+1
The ce_mode_from_stat() function is a performance-critical static inline helper in 'read-cache.h'. As we migrate configuration variables into the repository struct, this helper needs access to the repository context. Update the signature of ce_mode_from_stat() to take a 'struct repository *' parameter, and update all callers to pass the appropriate repository instance. To prepare for the overhead of replacing cheap global variable accesses with getter functions, the boolean expressions are reordered to evaluate 'S_ISREG(mode)' first. While at it, add a comment for ce_mode_from_stat(). 2026-07-10odb/transaction: introduce ODB transaction flagsJustin Tobler1-1/+1
The temporary directory used by git-receive-pack(1) to write objects is managed slightly differently than how it is done via ODB transactions: - The temporary directory is eagerly created upfront, instead of waiting for the first object write. - The prefix name of the temporary directory is "incoming" instead of "bulk-fsync". In a subsequent commit, git-receive-pack(1) will use ODB transactions instead of `tmp_objdir` directly. To provide a means to configure the same transaction behavior, introduce `enum odb_transaction_flags` and the ODB_TRANSACTION_RECEIVE flag intended as a signal for ODB transactions using the "files" backend to be set up for git-receive-pack(1). Transaction call sites are updated accordingly to provide the required flag parameter. Signed-off-by: Justin Tobler <jltobler@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2026-07-10odb/transaction: propagate begin errorsJustin Tobler1-1/+1
When `odb_transaction_begin()` is invoked, the function returns the transaction pointer directly. There is no way for the backend to signal that it failed to set up its state, such as when creating the temporary object directory backing the transaction. In a subsequent commit, git-receive-pack(1) starts using ODB transactions and needs to be able to report such failures rather than silently ignore them. Refactor `odb_transaction_begin()` to return an int error code and write the resulting transaction into an out parameter. Also introduce `odb_transaction_begin_or_die()` as a convenience for callsites that do not need to handle errors explicitly. Note that `odb_transaction_begin()` now returns an error when the ODB already has an inflight transaction pending. ODB transaction call sites that may encounter an inflight transaction are updated to explicitly handle this case. 2026-07-07parse-options: exit 0 on -hbrian m. carlson1-0/+1
The standard philosophy for Unix software when a help option (such as --help) is specified is that the software should exit 0, printing the help output to standard output, since the standard output is for user-requested output and the program performed the requested task successfully. If the user specifies an incorrect option, then the help output should be printed to standard error (since the user has made a mistake) and it should exit unsuccessfully. Most of our commands currently exit 129 on receiving the -h option to print the short help, which does not line up with the standard philosophy above. Let's change that to exit 0 instead. This requires changes to a variety of tests which previously wanted the 129 exit code, so update them. Note that because git diff does its own option parsing, it still exits with 129, so update some of the tests to expect either exit status. Some commands also now pass with -h but not --help-all, so handle those cases differently for those commands. 2026-07-07parse-options: add a separate case for help output on errorbrian m. carlson1-0/+1
When we parse a command line option such as -h or --help, we currently exit 129, since that is the exit code when help output is printed. In a future commit, we'll change this to exit 0 instead, since we're doing what the user wanted successfully. However, there are some cases where we print help output because the user has provided ambiguous or invalid input, such as an ambiguous option, and we'll want to exit unsuccessfully there. Make this easier by defining a new return code, PARSE_OPT_HELP_ERROR, that can be used in this case, while reserving PARSE_OPT_HELP for those cases where the user has requested help directly. 2026-05-19setup: stop using `the_repository` in `setup_work_tree()`Patrick Steinhardt1-5/+5
Stop using `the_repository` in `setup_work_tree()` and instead accept the repository as a parameter. The injection of `the_repository` is thus bumped one level higher, where callers now pass it in explicitly. Note that the function tracks two bits of information via global variables. This of course doesn't make much sense anymore now that we can set up worktrees for arbitrary repositories: - We track whether the worktree has already been initialized and, if so, we skip the call to `chdir_notify()` and setenv(3p). It does not make much sense to store this info in the repository, as we _would_ want to update the environment when switching between worktrees back and forth. So instead of storing this info in the repository, we drop this state entirely and live with the fact that we may execute the logic twice. It should ultimately be idempotent though and thus not be much of a problem. - We track whether the worktree configuration is bogus. If so, and if later on some caller tries to setup the worktree, then we'll die instead. This is indeed information that we can move into the repository itself. 2026-05-15odb: split `struct odb_transaction` into separate headerJustin Tobler1-0/+1
The current ODB transaction interface is colocated with other ODB interfaces in "odb.{c,h}". Subsequent commits will expand `struct odb_transaction` to support write operations on the transaction directly. To keep things organized and prevent "odb.{c,h}" from becoming more unwieldy, split out `struct odb_transaction` into a separate header. 2025-09-16odb: add transaction interfaceJustin Tobler1-3/+4
Transactions are managed via the {begin,end}_odb_transaction() function in the object-file subsystem and its implementation is specific to the files object source. Introduce odb_transaction_{begin,commit}() in the odb subsystem to provide an eventual object source agnostic means to manage transactions. Update call sites to instead manage transactions through the odb subsystem. Also rename {begin,end}_odb_transaction() functions to object_file_transaction_{begin,commit}() to clarify the object source it supports. 2025-09-16object-file: relocate ODB transaction codeJustin Tobler1-1/+0
The bulk-checkin subsystem provides various functions to manage ODB transactions. Apart from {begin,end}_odb_transaction(), these functions are only used by the object-file subsystem to manage aspects of a transaction implementation specific to the files object source. Relocate all the transaction code in bulk-checkin to object-file. This simplifies the exposed transaction interface by reducing it to only {begin,end}_odb_transaction(). Function and type names are adjusted in the subsequent commit to better fit the new location. Signed-off-by: Justin Tobler <jltobler@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2025-09-16builtin/update-index: end ODB transaction when --verbose is specifiedJustin Tobler1-8/+15
With 23a3a303 (update-index: use the bulk-checkin infrastructure, 2022-04-04), object database transactions were added to git-update-index(1) to facilitate writing objects in bulk. With transactions, newly added objects are instead written to a temporary object directory and migrated to the primary object database upon transaction commit. When the --verbose option is specified, the subsequent set of objects written are explicitly flushed via flush_odb_transaction() prior to reporting the update. Flushing the object database transaction migrates pending objects to the primary object database without marking the transaction as complete. This is done so objects are immediately visible to git-update-index(1) callers using the --verbose option and that rely on parsing verbose output to know when objects are written. Due to how git-update-index(1) parses arguments, options that come after a filename are not considered during the object update. Therefore, it may not be known ahead of time whether the --verbose option is present and thus object writes are considered transactional by default until a --verbose option is parsed. Flushing a transaction after individual object writes negates the benefit of writing objects to a transaction in the first place. Furthermore, the mechanism to flush a transaction without actually committing is rather awkward. Drop the call to flush_odb_transaction() in favor of ending the transaction altogether when the --verbose flag is encountered. Subsequent object writes occur outside of a transaction and are therefore immediately visible which matches the current behavior. 2025-07-23config: drop `git_config()` wrapperPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
In 036876a1067 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global repository variable explicit at the callsite. Follow through with that intent and remove `git_config()`. All callsites are adjusted so that they use `repo_config(the_repository, ...)` instead. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. Those sites should eventually be cleaned up in a later patch series. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2025-04-17global: use designated initializers for optionsPatrick Steinhardt1-41/+90
While we expose macros for most of our different option types understood by the "parse-options" subsystem, not every combination of fields that has one as that would otherwise quickly lead to an explosion of macros. Instead, we just initialize structures manually for those variants of fields that don't have a macro. Callsites that open-code these structure initialization don't use designated initializers though and instead just provide values for each of the fields that they want to initialize. This has three significant downsides: - Callsites need to specify all values up to the last field that they care about. This often includes fields that should simply be left at their default zero-initialized state, which adds distraction. - Any reader not deeply familiar with the layout of the structure has a hard time figuring out what the respective initializers mean. - Reordering or introducing new fields in the middle of the structure is impossible without adapting all callsites. Convert all sites to instead use designated initializers, which we have started using in our codebase quite a while ago. This allows us to skip any default-initialized fields, gives the reader context by specifying the field names and allows us to reorder or introduce new fields where we want to. 2025-04-15object-file: split up concerns of `HASH_*` flagsPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
The functions `hash_object_file()`, `write_object_file()` and `index_fd()` reuse the same set of flags to alter their behaviour. This not only adds confusion, but given that every function only supports a subset of the flags it becomes very hard to see which flags can be passed to what function. Last but not least, this entangles the implementation of all three function families. Split up concerns by creating separate flags for each of the function families. 2023-09-05parse-options: mark unused "opt" parameter in callbacksJeff King1-2/+2
The previous commit argued that parse-options callbacks should try to use opt->value rather than touching globals directly. In some cases, however, that's awkward to do. Some callbacks touch multiple variables, or may even just call into an abstracted function that does so. In some of these cases we _could_ convert them by stuffing the multiple variables into a single struct and passing the struct pointer through opt->value. But that may make other parts of the code less readable, as the struct relationship has to be mentioned everywhere. Let's just accept that these cases are special and leave them as-is. But we do need to mark their "opt" parameters to satisfy -Wunused-parameter. Signed-off-by: Jeff King <peff@peff.net> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2023-07-31checkout: allow "checkout -m path" to unmerge removed pathsJunio C Hamano1-1/+1
"git checkout -m -- path" uses the unmerge_marked_index() API, whose implementation is incapable of unresolving a path that was resolved as removed. Extend the unmerge_index() API function so that we can mark the ce_flags member of the cache entries we add to the index as unmerged, and replace use of unmerge_marked_index() with it. Now, together with its unmerge_index_entry_at() helper function, unmerge_marked_index() function is no longer called by anybody, and can safely be removed. This makes two known test failures in t2070 and t7201 to succeed. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2023-07-31update-index: remove stale fallback code for "--unresolve"Junio C Hamano1-101/+11
The "update-index --unresolve" is a relatively old feature that was introduced in Git v1.4.1 (June 2006), which predates the resolve-undo extension introduced in Git v1.7.0 (February 2010). The original code that was limited only to work during a merge (and not during a rebase or a cherry-pick) has been kept as the fallback codepath to be used as a transition measure. By now, for more than 10 years we have stored resolve-undo extension in the index file, and the fallback code way outlived its usefulness. Remove it, together with two file-scope static global variables. One of these variables is still used by surviving function, but it does not have to be a global at all, so move it to local to that function. Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2023-07-31update-index: use unmerge_index_entry() to support removalJunio C Hamano1-16/+22
"update-index --unresolve" uses the unmerge_index_entry_at() that assumes that the path to be unresolved must be in the index, which makes it impossible to unresolve a path that was resolved as removal. Rewrite unresolve_one() to use the unmerge_index_entry() to support unresolving such a path. Existing tests for "update-index --unresolve" forgot to check one thing that tests for "checkout --merge -- paths" tested, which is to make sure that resolve-undo record that has already been used to recreate higher-stage index entries is removed. Add new invocations of "ls-files --resolve-undo" after running "update-index --unresolve" to make sure that unresolving with update-index does remove the used resolve-undo records. 2023-07-31update-index: do not read HEAD and MERGE_HEAD unconditionallyJunio C Hamano1-18/+28
When "update-index --unresolve $path" cannot find the resolve-undo record for the path the user requested to unresolve, it stuffs the blobs from HEAD and MERGE_HEAD to stage #2 and stage #3 as a fallback. For this reason, the operation does not even start unless both "HEAD" and "MERGE_HEAD" exist. This is suboptimal in a few ways: * It does not recreate stage #1. Even though it is a correct design decision not to do so (because it is impossible to recreate in general cases, without knowing how we got there, including what merge strategy was used), it is much less useful not to have that information in the index. * It limits the "unresolve" operation only during a conflicted "git merge" and nothing else. Other operations like "rebase", "cherry-pick", and "switch -m" may result in conflicts, and the user may want to unresolve the conflict that they incorrectly resolved in order to redo the resolution, but the fallback would not kick in. * Most importantly, the entire "unresolve" operation is disabled after a conflicted merge is committed and MERGE_HEAD is removed, even though the index has perfectly usable resolve-undo records. By lazily reading the HEAD and MERGE_HEAD only when we need to go to the fallback codepath, we will allow cases where resolve-undo records are available (which is 100% of the time, unless the user is reading from an index file created by Git more than 10 years ago) to proceed even after a conflicted merge was committed, during other mergy operations that do not use MERGE_HEAD, or after the result of such mergy operations has been committed. 2023-06-21cache.h: remove this no-longer-used headerElijah Newren1-2/+1
Since this header showed up in some places besides just #include statements, update/clean-up/remove those other places as well. Note that compat/fsmonitor/fsm-path-utils-darwin.c previously got away with violating the rule that all files must start with an include of git-compat-util.h (or a short-list of alternate headers that happen to include it first). This change exposed the violation and caused it to stop building correctly; fix it by having it include git-compat-util.h first, as per policy. 2023-06-21read-cache*.h: move declarations for read-cache.c functions from cache.hElijah Newren1-0/+1
For the functions defined in read-cache.c, move their declarations from cache.h to a new header, read-cache-ll.h. Also move some related inline functions from cache.h to read-cache.h. The purpose of the read-cache-ll.h/read-cache.h split is that about 70% of the sites don't need the inline functions and the extra headers they include. 2023-04-24hash-ll.h: split out of hash.h to remove dependency on repository.hElijah Newren1-0/+2
hash.h depends upon and includes repository.h, due to the definition and use of the_hash_algo (defined as the_repository->hash_algo). However, most headers trying to include hash.h are only interested in the layout of the structs like object_id. Move the parts of hash.h that do not depend upon repository.h into a new file hash-ll.h (the "low level" parts of hash.h), and adjust other files to use this new header where the convenience inline functions aren't needed. This allows hash.h and object.h to be fairly small, minimal headers. It also exposes a lot of hidden dependencies on both path.h (which was brought in by repository.h) and repository.h (which was previously implicitly brought in by object.h), so also adjust other files to be more explicit about what they depend upon.
