2026-08-13builtin/repack: add guards for --drop-filteredSiddharth Shrimali1-0/+52
--drop-filtered removes local promisor blobs. That is only safe when the repository is not mid-operation and when the blobs are not actively in use, so add two guards, both skipped for bare repositories which have neither a worktree nor an index. First, refuse to run while a merge, rebase, am, cherry-pick, revert, or bisect is in progress. During these operations the working tree and index are in an intermediate state, and rewriting packs and deleting objects underneath a half-finished operation is unsafe. Second, refuse to drop a blob that the current index references. Such a blob is needed by the working tree, so dropping it would only cause the next command that touches the worktree to lazy-fetch it straight back, reclaiming nothing. The offending path is reported so the user can see why the drop was refused. Make --drop-filtered remove the enumerated promisor blobs instead of only listing them. The drop set is computed before repack_promisor_objects() runs, and on a real run it is passed in so the rebuilt promisor pack omits those blobs. --drop-filtered implies -d so the old promisor packs, which still contain the dropped blobs, are removed. Without this the blobs would survive in the redundant packs. The existing repack machinery performs the write-before-delete and fsync, so the drop is crash-safe. The dropped blobs become absent locally but remain recoverable from the promisor remote, so a later access lazy-fetches them back transparently. --dry-run keeps its previous behavior, i.e. it lists the candidates and changes nothing. 2026-08-13builtin/repack: enumerate promisor blobs for --drop-filteredSiddharth Shrimali1-1/+19
Add enumeration logic for --drop-filtered. In --dry-run mode, print the OIDs of locally-held promisor blobs that exceed the filter threshold, as candidates for removal. Reading from write_filtered_pack() cannot work for partial clones. git repack routes promisor objects through a separate path: repack_promisor_objects() repacks them first, and the main pack-objects run uses --exclude-promisor-objects. By the time write_filtered_pack() runs, the promisor blobs are already consumed by the main pack. The filtered pack is always empty on a partial clone. Instead, walk promisor objects directly via odb_for_each_object() with ODB_FOR_EACH_OBJECT_PROMISOR_ONLY, collecting all promisor blobs into an oidset. The blobs exceeding the filter threshold are then selected using list_objects_filter__filter_oidset(). Every object enumerated this way is a promisor object, so it is recoverable from the promisor remote in the same sense as the rest of a partial clone, as long as the remote still has it. This holds without a separate is_promisor_object() check. A future implementation can verify availability against the remote directly once a client-side remote-object-info query exists. OBJECT_INFO_SKIP_FETCH_OBJECT is passed to every object info query so enumeration never triggers a lazy fetch. The enumeration collects candidates into a caller-provided oidset and --dry-run prints them. Actually removing the objects, together with the required promisor-remote verification, is written in a later commit. Add a to_drop oidset parameter to repack_promisor_objects(). When it is non-NULL, write_oid() omits those objects from the rebuilt promisor pack. This is the mechanism --drop-filtered will use to remove promisor blobs, i.e. rebuild the promisor pack without them. All existing callers pass NULL, so behavior is unchanged. 2026-08-13builtin/repack: add --drop-filtered and --dry-run optionsSiddharth Shrimali1-3/+71
Add two new command-line options to 'git-repack': --drop-filtered: intended to eventually delete objects that match the filter specification. Requires --filter and -a, and is incompatible with --filter-to. --dry-run: show which objects would be dropped without making any changes. Only meaningful with --drop-filtered. Keep --dry-run as a separate option rather than folding it into --drop-filtered (e.g. --drop-filtered=dry-run), to stay consistent with the --dry-run option other Git commands already provide and to leave room for it to describe other repack behavior later. A --drop-filtered=<mode> form can still be added later if more drop-specific modes are needed. --drop-filtered also requires a promisor remote to be configured, since dropping objects without a remote to fetch them back from would be permanent data loss. --drop-filtered is incompatible with bitmap writing: filtering breaks the "all objects in one pack" closure that bitmaps require. Detect an explicit -b/--write-bitmap-index on the command line with a dedicated option callback that sets a "write_bitmaps_given" flag, so it can be distinguished from a repack.writeBitmaps configuration value even when config already enables bitmaps. An explicit -b is reported as a conflict, while a config-provided default is silently disabled for the duration of the command. These options currently only perform validation. The actual enumeration and deletion will be added in follow-up commits. 2026-06-17midx: refactor interfaces to work on "packed" sourcePatrick Steinhardt1-2/+6
Our interfaces used to interact with MIDXs all work on top of the generic `struct odb_source`. This doesn't make much sense though: a MIDX is strictly tied to the "packed" source, so passing in a generic source gives the false sense that it may also work with a different type of source. Fix this conceptual weirdness and instead require the caller to pass in a "packed" source explicitly. This also makes the next commit easier to implement, where we drop the pointer to the "files" source in the "packed" source. 2026-05-20repack: allow `--write-midx=incremental` without `--geometric`Taylor Blau1-3/+0
Previously, `--write-midx=incremental` required `--geometric` and would die() without it. Relax this restriction so that incremental MIDX repacking can be used independently. Without `--geometric`, the behavior is append-only: a single new MIDX layer is created containing whatever packs were written by the repack and appended to the existing chain (or a new chain is started). Existing layers are preserved as-is with no compaction or merging. Implement this via a new repack_make_midx_append_plan() that builds a plan consisting of a WRITE step for the freshly written packs followed by COPY steps for every existing MIDX layer. The existing compaction plan (repack_make_midx_compaction_plan) is used only when `--geometric` is active. Update the documentation to describe the behavior with and without `--geometric`, and replace the test that enforced the old restriction with one exercising append-only incremental MIDX repacking. 2026-05-20repack: introduce `--write-midx=incremental`Taylor Blau1-6/+43
Expose the incremental MIDX repacking mode (implemented in an earlier commit) via a new --write-midx=incremental option for `git repack`. Add "incremental" as a recognized argument to the --write-midx OPT_CALLBACK, mapping it to REPACK_WRITE_MIDX_INCREMENTAL. When this mode is active and --geometric is in use, set the midx_layer_threshold on the pack geometry so that only packs in sufficiently large tip layers are considered for repacking. Two new configuration options control the compaction behavior: - repack.midxSplitFactor (default: 2): the factor used in the geometric merging condition for MIDX layers. - repack.midxNewLayerThreshold (default: 8): the minimum number of packs in the tip MIDX layer before its packs are considered as candidates for geometric repacking. Add tests exercising the new mode across a variety of scenarios including basic geometric violations, multi-round chain integrity, branching and merging histories, cross-layer object uniqueness, and threshold-based compaction. 2026-05-20repack: implement incremental MIDX repackingTaylor Blau1-0/+5
Implement the `write_midx_incremental()` function, which builds and maintains an incremental MIDX chain as part of the geometric repacking process. Unlike the default mode which writes a single flat MIDX, the incremental mode constructs a compaction plan that determines which MIDX layers to write, compact, or copy, and then executes each step using `git multi-pack-index` subcommands with the --no-write-chain-file flag. The repacking strategy works as follows: * Acquire the lock guarding the multi-pack-index-chain. * A new MIDX layer is always written containing the newly created pack(s). If the tip MIDX layer was rewritten during geometric repacking, any surviving packs from that layer are also included. * Starting from the new layer, adjacent MIDX layers are merged together as long as the accumulated object count exceeds half the object count of the next deeper layer (controlled by 'repack.midxSplitFactor'). * Remaining layers in the chain are evaluated pairwise and either compacted or copied as-is, following the same merging condition. * Write the contents of the new multi-pack-index chain, atomically move it into place, and then release the lock. * Delete any now-unused MIDX layers. After writing the new layer, the strategy is evaluated among the existing MIDX layers in order from oldest to newest. Each step that writes a new MIDX layer uses "--no-write-chain-file" to avoid updating the multi-pack-index-chain file. After all steps are complete, the new chain file is written and then atomically moved into place. At present, this functionality is exposed behind a new enum value, `REPACK_WRITE_MIDX_INCREMENTAL`, but has no external callers. Change the --write-midx (-m) flag from an OPT_BOOL to an OPT_CALLBACK that accepts an optional mode argument. Introduce an enum with REPACK_WRITE_MIDX_NONE and REPACK_WRITE_MIDX_DEFAULT to distinguish between the two states, and update all existing boolean checks accordingly. For now, passing no argument (or just `-m`) selects the default mode, preserving existing behavior. A subsequent commit will add a new mode for writing incremental MIDXs. Extract repack_write_midx() as a dispatcher that selects the appropriate MIDX-writing implementation based on the mode. Store the ODB source in the `existing_packs` struct and use that in place of the raw `repo->objects->sources` access within `cmd_repack()`. The source used is still assigned from the first source in the list, so there are no functional changes in this commit. The changes instead serve two purposes (one immediate, one not): - The incremental MIDX-based repacking machinery will need to know what source is being used to read the existing MIDX/chain (should one exist). - In the future, if "git repack" is taught how to operate on other object sources, this field will serve as the authoritative value for that source. 2026-03-27repack: mark non-MIDX packs above the split as excluded-openTaylor Blau1-2/+17
In 5ee86c273bf (repack: exclude cruft pack(s) from the MIDX where possible, 2025-06-23), geometric repacking learned to exclude cruft packs from the MIDX when 'repack.midxMustContainCruft' is set to 'false'. This works because packs generated with '--stdin-packs=follow' rescue any once-unreachable objects that later become reachable, making the resulting packs closed under reachability without needing the cruft pack in the MIDX. However, packs above the geometric split that were not part of the previous MIDX may not have full object closure. When such packs are marked as excluded-closed ('^'), pack-objects treats them as a reachability boundary and does not traverse through them during the follow pass, potentially leaving the resulting pack without full closure. Fix this by marking packs above the geometric split that were not in the previous MIDX as excluded-open ('!') instead of excluded-closed ('^'). This causes pack-objects to walk through their commits during the follow pass, rescuing any reachable objects not present in the closed-excluded packs. Note that MIDXs which were generated prior to this change and are unlucky enough to not be closed under reachability may still exhibit this bug, as we treat all MIDX'd packs as closed. That is true in an overwhelming number of cases, since in order to have a non-closed MIDX you would have to: - Generate a pack via an earlier geometric repack that is not closed under reachability. - Store that pack in the MIDX. - Avoid picking any commits to receive reachability bitmaps which happen to reach objects from which the missing objects are reachable. In the extremely rare chance that all of the above should happen, an all-into-one repack will resolve the issue. Unfortunately, there is no perfect way to determine whether a MIDX'd pack is closed outside of ensuring that there is a '1' bit in at least one bitmap for every bit position corresponding to objects in that pack. While this is possible to do, this approach would treat MIDX'd packs as open in cases where there is at least one object that is not reachable from the subset of commits selected for bitmapping. 2026-01-14builtin/repack: handle promisor packs with geometric repackingPatrick Steinhardt1-0/+3
When performing a fetch with an object filter, we mark the resulting packfile as a promisor pack. An object part of such a pack may miss any of its referenced objects, and Git knows to handle this case by fetching any such missing objects from the promisor remote. The "promisor" property needs to be retained going forward. So every time we pack a promisor object, the resulting pack must be marked as a promisor pack. git-repack(1) does this already: when a repository has a promisor remote, it knows to pass "--exclude-promisor-objects" to the git-pack-objects(1) child process. Promisor packs are written separately when doing an all-into-one repack via `repack_promisor_objects()`. But we don't support promisor objects when doing a geometric repack yet. Promisor packs do not get any special treatment there, as we simply merge promisor and non-promisor packs. The resulting pack is not even marked as a promisor pack, which essentially corrupts the repository. This corruption couldn't happen in the real world though: we pass both "--exclude-promisor-objects" and "--stdin-packs" to git-pack-objects(1) if a repository has a promisor remote, but as those options are mutually exclusive we always end up dying. And while we made those flags compatible with one another in a preceding commit, we still end up dying in case git-pack-objects(1) is asked to repack a promisor pack. There's multiple ways to fix this: - We can exclude promisor packs from the geometric progression altogether. This would have the consequence that we never repack promisor packs at all. But in a partial clone it is quite likely that the user generates a bunch of promisor packs over time, as every backfill fetch would create another one. So this doesn't really feel like a sensible option. - We can adapt git-pack-objects(1) to support repacking promisor packs and include them in the normal geometric progression. But this would mean that the set of promisor objects expands over time as the packs are merged with normal packs. - We can use a separate geometric progression to repack promisor packs. The first two options both have significant downsides, so they aren't really feasible. But the third option fixes both of these downsides: we make sure that promisor packs get merged, and at the same time we never expand the set of promisor objects beyond the set of objects that are already marked as promisor objects. That choice is somewhat relatable, as most of the logic really is to close resources associated with the packfile store itself. But we also end up handling object sources and commit graphs, which certainly is not related to packfiles. Move the function into the object database subsystem and rename it to `odb_close()`. Over the past several dozen commits, we have moved a large amount of functionality out of the repack builtin and into other files like repack.c, repack-cruft.c, repack-filtered.c, repack-midx.c, and repack-promisor.c. These files specify the minimal set of `#include`s that they need to compile successfully, but we did not change the set of `#include`s in the repack builtin itself. Now that the code movement is complete, let's clean up that set of `#include`s and trim down the builtin to include the minimal amount of external headers necessary to compile. 2025-10-16repack: move `pack_kept_objects` to `struct pack_objects_args`Taylor Blau1-13/+7
The "pack_kept_objects" variable is defined as static to the repack builtin, but is inherently related to the pack-objects arguments that the builtin uses when generating new packs. Move that field into the "struct pack_objects_args", and shuffle around where we append the corresponding command-line option when preparing a pack-objects process. Specifically: - `write_cruft_pack()` always wants to pass "--honor-pack-keep", so explicitly set the `pack_kept_objects` field to "0" when initializing the `write_pack_opts` struct before calling `write_cruft_pack()`. - `write_filtered_pack()` no longer needs to handle writing the command-line option "--honor-pack-keep" when preparing a pack-objects process, since its call to `prepare_pack_objects()` will have already taken care of that. `write_filtered_pack()` also reads the `pack_kept_objects` field to determine whether to write the existing kept packs with a leading "^" character, so update that to read through the `po_args` pointer instead. - `cmd_repack()` also no longer has to write the "--honor-pack-keep" flag explicitly, since this is also handled via its call to `prepare_pack_objects()`. Since there is a default value for "pack_kept_objects" that relies on whether or not we are writing a bitmap (and not writing a MIDX), extract a default initializer for `struct pack_objects_args` that keeps this conditional default behavior. To prepare to move the `finish_pack_objects_cmd()` function out of the builtin and into the repack.h API, there are a couple of things we need to do first: - First, let's take advantage of `write_pack_opts_is_local()` function introduced in the previous commit instead of passing "local" explicitly. - Let's also avoid referring to the static 'packtmp' field within builtin/repack.c by instead accessing it through the write_pack_opts argument. There are three callers which need to adjust themselves in order to account for this change. The callers which reside in write_cruft_pack() and write_filtered_pack() both already have an "opts" in scope, so they can pass it through transparently. The other call (at the bottom of `cmd_repack()`) needs to initialize its own write_pack_opts to pass the necessary fields over to the direct call to `finish_pack_objects_cmd()`. Similar to the previous commit, the functions `write_cruft_pack()` and `write_filtered_pack()` both compute a "local" variable via the exact same mechanism: const char *scratch; int local = skip_prefix(opts->destination, opts->packdir, &scratch); Not only does this cause us to repeat the same pair of lines, it also introduces an unnecessary "scratch" variable that is common between both functions. Instead of repeating ourselves, let's extract that functionality into a new function in the repack.h API called "write_pack_opts_is_local()". That function takes a pointer to a "struct write_pack_opts" (which has as fields both "destination" and "packdir"), and can encapsulate the dangling "scratch" field. Extract that function and make it visible within the repack.h API, and use it within both `write_cruft_pack()` and `write_filtered_pack()`. While we're at it, match our modern conventions by returning a "bool" instead of "int", and use `starts_with()` instead of `skip_prefix()` to avoid storing the dummy "scratch" variable. The remaining duplication (that is, that both `write_cruft_pack()` and `write_filtered_pack()` still both call `write_pack_opts_is_local()`) will be addressed in the following commit. Both callers within the repack builtin which call functions that take a 'write_pack_opts' structure have the following pattern: struct write_pack_opts opts = { .packdir = packdir, .packtmp = packtmp, .pack_prefix = find_pack_prefix(packdir, packtmp), /* ... */ }; int ret = write_some_kind_of_pack(&opts, /* ... */); , but both "packdir" and "packtmp" are fields within the write_pack_opts struct itself! Instead of also computing the pack_prefix ahead of time, let's have the callees compute it themselves by moving `find_pack_prefix()` out of the repack builtin, and have it take a write_pack_opts pointer instead of the "packdir" and "packtmp" fields directly. There are various functions within the 'repack' builtin which are responsible for writing different kinds of packs. They include: - `static int write_filtered_pack(...)` - `static int write_cruft_pack(...)` as well as the function `finish_pack_objects_cmd()`, which is responsible for finalizing a new pack write, and recording the checksum of its contents in the 'names' list. Both of these `write_` functions have a few things in common. They both take a pointer to the 'pack_objects_args' struct, as well as a pair of character pointers for `destination` and `pack_prefix`. Instead of repeating those arguments for each function, let's extract an options struct called "write_pack_opts" which has these three parameters as member fields. While we're at it, add fields for "packdir," and "packtmp", both of which are static variables within the builtin, and need to be read from within these two functions. This will shorten the list of parameters that callers have to provide to `write_filtered_pack()`, avoid ambiguity when passing multiple variables of the same type, and provide a unified interface for the two functions mentioned earlier. (Note that "pack_prefix" can be derived on the fly as a function of "packdir" and "packtmp", making it unnecessary to store "pack_prefix" explicitly. This commit ignores that potential cleanup in the name of doing as few things as possible, but a later commit will make that change.) To write a MIDX at the end of a repack operation, 'git repack' presently computes the set of packs to write into the MIDX, before invoking `write_midx_included_packs()` with a `string_list` containing those packs. The logic for computing which packs are supposed to appear in the resulting MIDX is within `midx_included_packs()`, where it is aware of details like which cruft pack(s) were written/combined, if/how we did a geometric repack, etc. Computing this list ourselves before providing it to the sole function to make use of that list `write_midx_included_packs()` is somewhat awkward. In the future, repack will learn how to write incremental MIDXs, which will use a very different pack selection routine. Instead of doing something like: struct string_list included_packs = STRING_LIST_INIT_DUP; if (incremental) { midx_incremental_included_packs(&included_packs, ...): write_midx_incremental_included_packs(&included_packs, ...); } else { midx_included_packs(&included_packs, ...): write_midx_included_packs(&included_packs, ...); } in the future, let's have each function that writes a MIDX be responsible for itself computing the list of included packs. When writing a new MIDX, repack must determine whether or not there are any packs in the MIDX it is replacing (if one exists) that are not somehow represented in the new MIDX (e.g., either by preserving the pack verbatim, or rolling it up as part of a geometric repack, etc.). In order to do this, it keeps track of a list of pack names from the MIDX present in the repository at the start of the repack operation. Since we manipulate and close the object store, we cannot rely on the repository's in-core representation of the MIDX, since this is subject to change and/or go away. When this behavior was introduced in 5ee86c273b (repack: exclude cruft pack(s) from the MIDX where possible, 2025-06-23), we maintained an array of character pointers instead of using a convenience API, such as string-list.h. Store the list of MIDX pack names in a string_list, thereby reducing the number of parameters we have to pass to `midx_has_unknown_packs()`. Once all new packs are known to exist, 'repack' installs their contents from their temporary location into their permanent one. This is a semi-involved procedure for each pack, since for each extension (e.g., ".idx", ".pack", ".mtimes", and so on) we have to either: - adjust the filemode of the temporary file before renaming it into place, or - die() if we are missing a non-optional extension, or - unlink() any existing file for extensions that we did not generate (e.g., if a non-cruft pack we generated was identical to, say, a cruft pack which existed at the beginning of the process, we have to remove the ".mtimes" file). Extract this procedure into its own function, and call it "generated_pack_install"(). This will set us up for pulling this function out of the builtin entirely and making it part of the repack.h API, which will be done in a future commit. There are a couple of spots that cause warnings within the existing_packs API without DISABLE_SIGN_COMPARE_WARNINGS under DEVELOPER=1 mode. In both cases, we have int values that are being compared against size_t ones. Neither of these two cases are incorrect, and the cast is completely OK in practice. But both are unnecessary, since: - in existing_packs_mark_for_deletion_1(), 'hexsz' should be defined as a size_t anyway, since algop->hexsz is. - in existing_packs_collect(), 'i' should be defined as a size_t since it is counting up to the value of a string_list's 'nr' field. (This patch is a little bit of noise, but I would rather see us squelch these warnings ahead of moving the existing_packs API into a separate compilation unit to avoid having to define DISABLE_SIGN_COMPARE_WARNINGS in repack.c.)
