2026-06-15odb: use size_t for object_info.sizep and the size APIsJohannes Schindelin1-1/+1
When `js/objects-larger-than-4gb-on-windows` widened the streaming, index-pack and unpack-objects code paths, in the interest of keeping the patches somewhat reasonably-sized, it left the public ODB API still typed in `unsigned long`. In particular `struct object_info::sizep` and the four wrappers built on top of it (`odb_read_object`, `odb_read_object_peeled`, `odb_read_object_info`, `odb_pretend_object`) still return the unpacked size through `unsigned long *`, so on Windows `cat-file -s` and the `git add` / `git status` paths for a >4 GiB blob silently cap at 4 GiB. Widen the field and the four wrappers. The previous commits already widened the `unpack_entry()` cascade and pack-objects' in-core size accessors, so most of the cascade arrives here with no further work: the temporary shims in `packed_object_info_with_index_pos()` and in `unpack_entry()`'s delta-base recovery path go away, the two `SET_SIZE(entry, cast_size_t_to_ulong(canonical_size))` calls in `check_object()` and the matching one in `drop_reused_delta()` collapse to plain `SET_SIZE`, and `oe_get_size_slow()`'s tail `cast_size_t_to_ulong()` is gone too. What remains narrow are the boundaries this series does not intend to touch: the diff, blame, textconv and fast-import machinery. Even so, this patch is unfortunately quite large. 2026-06-12ls-files: filter pathspec before lstatTamir Duberstein1-0/+11
In --deleted and --modified modes, show_files() calls lstat() for each index entry before show_ce() applies the pathspec. prune_index() avoids most of these calls for pathspecs with a common directory prefix, but not for a top-level name or leading wildcard. Match before lstat() to avoid accessing the worktree for entries that cannot be shown. Treat this as a prefilter: do not update ps_matched, and retain the match in show_ce() so --error-unmatch is satisfied only by entries that the selected modes actually show. Prefilter only a single pathspec item, bounding the added work for each index entry. Applying match_pathspec() to multiple arguments can cost more than the lstat() calls it avoids. In a synthetic repository with 10,000 clean files, passing every path to ls-files --modified increased runtime from 112.5 ms to 494.1 ms when the prefilter was unconditional. With $parent and $this exported as paths to binaries built from the parent and this commit, on a repository with 881,290 index entries: hyperfine --warmup 0 --runs 3 \ --command-name parent \ '$parent -c core.fsmonitor=false ls-files --deleted -- README.md >/dev/null' \ --command-name this-commit \ '$this -c core.fsmonitor=false ls-files --deleted -- README.md >/dev/null' reported means of 65.790 seconds for the parent and 4.987 seconds for this commit. 2026-05-19setup: stop using `the_repository` in `setup_work_tree()`Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
Stop using `the_repository` in `setup_work_tree()` and instead accept the repository as a parameter. The injection of `the_repository` is thus bumped one level higher, where callers now pass it in explicitly. Note that the function tracks two bits of information via global variables. This of course doesn't make much sense anymore now that we can set up worktrees for arbitrary repositories: - We track whether the worktree has already been initialized and, if so, we skip the call to `chdir_notify()` and setenv(3p). It does not make much sense to store this info in the repository, as we _would_ want to update the environment when switching between worktrees back and forth. So instead of storing this info in the repository, we drop this state entirely and live with the fact that we may execute the logic twice. It should ultimately be idempotent though and thus not be much of a problem. - We track whether the worktree configuration is bogus. If so, and if later on some caller tries to setup the worktree, then we'll die instead. This is indeed information that we can move into the repository itself. 2026-05-19setup: stop using `the_repository` in `is_inside_work_tree()`Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
Similar as with the preceding commit, `is_inside_work_tree()` determines whether the current working directory is located inside the worktree of `the_repository`. Perform the same refactoring by dropping the caching mechanism and injecting the repository that shall be checked. Note that, same as in the preceding commit, we're also resolving the worktree path via `realpath()`. In theory this step is not necessary as we always set the worktree path via `repo_set_worktree()`, and that function already resolves the path for us. But resolving the path a second time is unlikely to matter performance-wise, and it feels fragile to rely on the repository's worktree path being absolute. We thus perform the same extra step even though it's ultimately not required. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2026-05-13ls-files: use strbuf_add_uint()René Scharfe1-6/+9

2025-09-08Merge branch 'ds/ls-files-lazy-unsparse'Junio C Hamano1-3/+10
"git ls-files <pathspec>..." should not necessarily have to expand the index fully if a sparsified directory is excluded by the pathspec; the code is taught to expand the index on demand to avoid this. * ds/ls-files-lazy-unsparse: ls-files: conditionally leave index sparse
2025-08-28ls-files: conditionally leave index sparseDerrick Stolee1-3/+10
When running 'git ls-files' with a pathspec, the index entries get filtered according to that pathspec before iterating over them in show_files(). In 78087097b8 (ls-files: add --sparse option, 2021-12-22), this iteration was prefixed with a check for the '--sparse' option which allows the command to output directory entries; this created a pre-loop call to ensure_full_index(). However, when a user runs 'git ls-files' where the pathspec matches directories that are recursively matched in the sparse-checkout, there are not any sparse directories that match the pathspec so they would not be written to the output. The expansion in this case is just a performance drop for no behavior difference. Replace this global check to expand the index with a check inside the loop for a matched sparse directory. If we see one, then expand the index and continue from the current location. This is safe since the previous entries in the index did not have any sparse directories and thus would remain stable in this expansion. A test in t1092 confirms that this changes the behavior. 2025-07-23config: move Git config parsing into "environment.c"Patrick Steinhardt1-0/+1
In "config.c" we host both the business logic to read and write config files as well as the logic to parse specific Git-related variables. On the one hand this is mixing concerns, but even more importantly it means that we cannot easily remove the dependency on `the_repository` in our config parsing logic. Move the logic into "environment.c". This file is a grab bag of all kinds of global state already, so it is quite a good fit. Furthermore, it also hosts most of the global variables that we're parsing the config values into, making this an even better fit. Note that there is one hidden change: in `parse_fsync_components()` we use an `int` to iterate through `ARRAY_SIZE(fsync_component_names)`. But as -Wsign-compare warnings are enabled in this file this causes a compiler warning. The issue is fixed by using a `size_t` instead. This change allows us to drop the `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` declaration. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2025-03-10hash: stop depending on `the_repository` in `null_oid()`Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+2
The `null_oid()` function returns the object ID that only consists of zeroes. Naturally, this ID also depends on the hash algorithm used, as the number of zeroes is different between SHA1 and SHA256. Consequently, the function returns the hash-algorithm-specific null object ID. This is currently done by depending on `the_hash_algo`, which implicitly makes us depend on `the_repository`. Refactor the function to instead pass in the hash algorithm for which we want to retrieve the null object ID. Adapt callsites accordingly by passing in `the_repository`, thus bubbling up the dependency on that global variable by one layer. There are a couple of trivial exceptions for subsystems that already got rid of `the_repository`. These subsystems instead use the repository that is available via the calling context: - "builtin/grep.c" - "grep.c" - "refs/debug.c" There are also two non-trivial exceptions: - "diff-no-index.c": Here we know that we may not have a repository initialized at all, so we cannot rely on `the_repository`. Instead, we adapt `diff_no_index()` to get a `struct git_hash_algo` as parameter. The only caller is located in "builtin/diff.c", where we know to call `repo_set_hash_algo()` in case we're running outside of a Git repository. Consequently, it is fine to continue passing `the_repository->hash_algo` even in this case. - "builtin/ls-files.c": There is an in-flight patch series that drops `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` in this file, which causes a semantic conflict because we use `null_oid()` in `show_submodule()`. The value is passed to `repo_submodule_init()`, which may use the object ID to resolve a tree-ish in the superproject from which we want to read the submodule config. As such, the object ID should refer to an object in the superproject, and consequently we need to use its hash algorithm. This means that we could in theory just not bother about this edge case at all and just use `the_repository` in "diff-no-index.c". But doing so would feel misdesigned. Remove the `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE` preprocessor define in "hash.c". Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2025-03-07builtin/ls-files: stop using `the_repository`Usman Akinyemi1-16/+16
Remove the_repository global variable in favor of the repository argument that gets passed in "builtin/ls-files.c". When `-h` is passed to the command outside a Git repository, the `run_builtin()` will call the `cmd_ls_files()` function with `repo` set to NULL and then early in the function, `show_usage_with_options_if_asked()` call will give the options help and exit. Pass the repository available in the calling context to both `expand_objectsize()` and `show_ru_info()` to remove their dependency on the global `the_repository` variable. Using the show_usage_with_options_if_asked() helper we introduced earlier, fix callers of usage_with_options() that want to show the help text when explicitly asked by the end-user. The help text now goes to the standard output stream for them. The test in t7600 for "git merge -h" may want to be retired, as the same is covered by t0012 already, but it is specifically testing that the "-h" option gets a response even with a corrupt index file, so for now let's leave it there. 2023-05-23ls-files: align format atoms with ls-treeZheNing Hu1-0/+27
"git ls-files --format" can be used to format the output of multiple file entries in the index, while "git ls-tree --format" can be used to format the contents of a tree object. However, the current set of %(objecttype), "(objectsize)", and "%(objectsize:padded)" atoms supported by "git ls-files --format" is a subset of what is available in "git ls-tree --format". Users sometimes need to establish a unified view between the index and tree, which can help with comparison or conversion between the two. Therefore, this patch adds the missing atoms to "git ls-files --format". "%(objecttype)" can be used to retrieve the object type corresponding to a file in the index, "(objectsize)" can be used to retrieve the object size corresponding to a file in the index, and "%(objectsize:padded)" is the same as "(objectsize)", except with padded format. 2023-03-21treewide: be explicit about dependence on gettext.hElijah Newren1-0/+1
Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include gettext.h if they are using it. However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an in-flight topic. 2023-03-10ls-files: fix "--format" output of relative pathsAdam Johnson1-1/+4
Fix a bug introduced with the "--format" option in ce74de93 (ls-files: introduce "--format" option, 2022-07-23), where relative paths were computed using the output buffer, which could lead to random garbage data in the output. 2022-07-23ls-files: introduce "--format" optionZheNing Hu1-0/+95
Add a new option "--format" that outputs index entries informations in a custom format, taking inspiration from the option with the same name in the `git ls-tree` command. "--format" cannot used with "-s", "-o", "-k", "-t", " --resolve-undo","--deduplicate" and "--eol". Signed-off-by: ZheNing Hu <adlternative@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2022-02-23ls-files: support --recurse-submodules --stageJonathan Tan1-2/+2
e77aa336f1 ("ls-files: optionally recurse into submodules", 2016-10-10) taught ls-files the --recurse-submodules argument, but only in a limited set of circumstances. In particular, --stage was unsupported, perhaps because there was no repo_find_unique_abbrev(), which was only introduced in 8bb95572b0 ("sha1-name.c: add repo_find_unique_abbrev_r()", 2019-04-16). This function is needed for using --recurse-submodules with --stage. Now that we have repo_find_unique_abbrev(), teach support for this combination of arguments. 2021-12-22ls-files: add --sparse optionDerrick Stolee1-2/+10
Existing callers to 'git ls-files' are expecting file names, not directories. It is best to expand a sparse index to show all of the contained files in this case. However, expert users may want to inspect the contents of the index itself including which directories are sparse. Add a --sparse option to allow users to request this information. During testing, I noticed that options such as --modified did not affect the output when the files in question were outside the sparse-checkout definition. Tests are added to document this preexisting behavior and how it remains unchanged with the sparse index and the --sparse option. 2021-10-07ls-files: add missing string_list_clear()Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason1-0/+1
Fix a memory leak that's been here ever since 72aeb18772d (clean.c, ls-files.c: respect encapsulation of exclude_list_groups, 2013-01-16), we dup'd the argument in option_parse_exclude(), but never freed the string_list. This makes almost all of t3001-ls-files-others-exclude.sh pass (it had a lot of failures before). Let's mark it as passing with TEST_PASSES_SANITIZE_LEAK=true, and then exclude the tests that still failed with a !SANITIZE_LEAK prerequisite check until we fix those leaks. We can still see the failed tests under GIT_TEST_FAIL_PREREQS=true. Signed-off-by: Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason <avarab@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
