The only remaining user of `the_hash_algo` in "refspec.c" is `refspec_append()`, which needs to know the hash algorithm so that it can parse the appended refspec item. In contrast to the functions adapted in the preceding commit, this function always operates on a `struct refspec`. As that structure is expected to only ever contain refspecs that all use the same hash function it doesn't make sense though to adapt each caller. Instead, adapt the structure itself so that it gets initialized with a hash function and use that hash function to parse new refspec items. Adapt callers accordingly. This removes the final dependency on the global repository variable in "refspec.c", so we can drop `USE_THE_REPOSITORY_VARIABLE`. When parsing a refspec item we need to know about the hash algorithm used by the repository so that we can decide whether or not a given string is an exact object ID. We use `the_hash_algo` for this, which makes the code implicitly depend on `the_repository`. Refactor `refspec_item_init_fetch()`, `refspec_item_init_push()` and `valid_fetch_refspec()` so that callers have to pass in the hash algorithm explicitly and adapt callers accordingly. Replace the accesses to the global 'ignore_case' variable with calls to 'repo_ignore_case(the_repository)'. This step eliminates the 'ignore_case' global state. Note on compat/win32/path-utils.c: To eliminate the global state, several helper functions (e.g. 'win32_fspathncmp()') now read from 'repo_ignore_case(the_repository)'. While this introduces dependency on 'repository.h' into the 'compat/', it avoids massive refactoring of the signatures across the codebase. 2026-06-19fetch: add configuration variable fetch.followRemoteHEADMatt Hunter1-5/+36
'fetch.followRemoteHEAD' is added as a generic setting used by all remotes for which 'remote.<name>.followRemoteHEAD' is undefined. If both variables are undefined, a builtin default of "create" is in effect, matching the previous behavior. As mentioned in the previous patch, 'fetch.followRemoteHEAD' supports all of the values that its 'remote' counterpart does _except_ warn-if-not-$branch, due to its tighter coupling to individual remote repositories. This setting interacts with the do_fetch mechanism in the same way as the previous does, but there are opportunities for improved user-experience discussed in [1]. See the included NEEDSWORK comment as well. Documentation and advice messages for both of the followRemoteHEAD variables are reworded to better capture the relationship between the two. The added tests assert feature parity between the two followRemoteHEAD variables, as well as the fact that 'remote.<name>.followRemoteHEAD' always supersedes this new configurable default. 2026-06-19fetch: refactor do_fetch handling of followRemoteHEADMatt Hunter1-4/+10
Update enum follow_remote_head_settings to include the value FOLLOW_REMOTE_UNCONFIGURED as the new zero-initialized value for followRemoteHEAD. This will allow us to distinguish between the variable being unset vs. explicitly set to 'create', which is ultimately the system default. The unnecessary indentation is removed. The do_fetch function is likewise updated to perform its own decision making to determine the effective followRemoteHEAD mode, falling back to the system default if necessary. This will enable the next patch to introduce a user-configurable default. Function set_head now accepts the mode as an argument rather than only considering the value defined by the remote. The use of the 'warn-if-not-$branch' value is awkward in the context of a global default, since the branches will differ between individual remotes. For this reason, it's left out of this scheme and handling of the no_warn_branch variable is untouched. Since a remote-specific value for followRemoteHEAD takes priority, we can assume that if remote->no_warn_branch is set, then the remote is also asserting FOLLOW_REMOTE_WARN as the effective operating mode, and it will be honored by do_fetch. Add a new 'remote.<name>.negotiationInclude' multi-valued config option that provides default values for --negotiation-include when no --negotiation-include arguments are specified over the command line. This is a mirror of how 'remote.<name>.negotiationRestrict' specifies defaults for the --negotiation-restrict arguments. Each value is either an exact ref name or a glob pattern whose tips should always be sent as 'have' lines during negotiation. The config values are resolved through the same resolve_negotiation_include() codepath as the CLI options. This option is additive with the normal negotiation process: the negotiation algorithm still runs and advertises its own selected commits, but the refs matching the config are sent unconditionally on top of those heuristically selected commits. Similar to the negotiationRestrict config, an empty value resets the value list to allow ignoring earlier config values, such as those that might be set in system or global config. 2026-05-20fetch: add --negotiation-include option for negotiationDerrick Stolee1-8/+30
Add a new --negotiation-include option to 'git fetch', which ensures that certain ref tips are always sent as 'have' lines during fetch negotiation, regardless of what the negotiation algorithm selects. This is useful when the repository has a large number of references, so the normal negotiation algorithm truncates the list. This is especially important in repositories with long parallel commit histories. For example, a repo could have a 'dev' branch for development and a 'release' branch for released versions. If the 'dev' branch isn't selected for negotiation, then it's not a big deal because there are many in-progress development branches with a shared history. However, if 'release' is not selected for negotiation, then the server may think that this is the first time the client has asked for that reference, causing a full download of its parallel commit history (and any extra data that may be unique to that branch). This is based on a real example where certain fetches would grow to 60+ GB when a release branch updated. This option is a complement to --negotiation-restrict, which reduces the negotiation ref set to a specific list. In the earlier example, using --negotiation-restrict to focus the negotiation to 'dev' and 'release' would avoid those problematic downloads, but would still not allow advertising potentially-relevant user branches. In this way, the 'include' version solves the problem I mention while allowing negotiation to pick other references opportunistically. The two options can also be combined to allow the best of both worlds. The argument may be an exact ref name or a glob pattern. Non-existent refs are silently ignored. This behavior is also updated in the ref matching logic for the related --negotiation-restrict option to match. The implementation outputs the requested objects as haves before the negotiator performs its own algorithm to choose the next haves. Use the new have_sent() interface to signal these have commits were sent before engaging with the negotiator's next() iterator. Also add --negotiation-include to 'git pull' passthrough options. In a previous change, the --negotiation-restrict command-line option of 'git fetch' was added as a synonym of --negotiation-tip. Both of these options restrict the set of 'haves' the client can send as part of negotiation. This was previously not available via a configuration option. Add a new 'remote.<name>.negotiationRestrict' multi-valued config option that updates 'git fetch <name>' to use these restrictions by default. If the user provides even one --negotiation-restrict argument, then the config is ignored. An empty value resets the value list to allow ignoring earlier config values, such as those that might be set in system or global config. The previous change added the --negotiation-restrict synonym for the --negotiation-tip option for 'git fetch'. In anticipation of adding a new option that behaves similarly but with distinct changes to its behavior, rename the internal representation of this data from 'negotiation_tips' to 'negotiation_restrict_tips'. The 'tips' part is kept because this is an oid_array in the transport layer. This requires the builtin to handle parsing refs into collections of oids so the transport layer can handle this cleaner form of the data. Also update the string_list used to store the inputs from command-line options. 2026-05-20fetch: add --negotiation-restrict optionDerrick Stolee1-5/+8
The --negotiation-tip option to 'git fetch' and 'git pull' allows users to specify that they want to focus negotiation on a small set of references. This is a _restriction_ on the negotiation set, helping to focus the negotiation when the ref count is high. However, it doesn't allow for the ability to opportunistically select references beyond that list. This subtle detail that this is a 'maximum set' and not a 'minimum set' is not immediately clear from the option name. This makes it more complicated to add a new option that provides the complementary behavior of a minimum set. For now, create a new synonym option, --negotiation-restrict, that behaves identically to --negotiation-tip. Update the documentation to make it clear that this new name is the preferred option, but we keep the old name for compatibility. Mark --negotiation-tip as an alias of the new, preferred option. Update a few warning messages with the new option, but also make them translatable with the option name inserted by formatting. At least one of these messages will be reused later for a new option. They implement generic remote group resolution that is not specific to fetch — they parse `remotes.<name>` config entries and resolve a name to either a list of group members or a single configured remote. Move them to remote.c and declare them in remote.h so that other builtins can use the same logic without duplication. Useful for the next patch. 2026-02-17fetch-pack: wire up and enable auto filter logicChristian Couder1-0/+2
Previous commits have set up an infrastructure for `--filter=auto` to automatically prepare a partial clone filter based on what the server advertised and the client accepted. Using that infrastructure, let's now enable the `--filter=auto` option in `git clone` and `git fetch` by setting `allow_auto_filter` to 1. Note that these small changes mean that when `git clone --filter=auto` or `git fetch --filter=auto` are used, "auto" is automatically saved as the partial clone filter for the server on the client. Therefore subsequent calls to `git fetch` on the client will automatically use this "auto" mode even without `--filter=auto`. Let's also set `allow_auto_filter` to 1 in `transport.c`, as the transport layer must be able to accept the "auto" filter spec even if the invoking command hasn't fully parsed it yet. When an "auto" filter is requested, let's have the "fetch-pack.c" code in `do_fetch_pack_v2()` compute a filter and send it to the server. In `do_fetch_pack_v2()` the logic also needs to check for the "promisor-remote" capability and call `promisor_remote_reply()` to parse advertised remotes and populate the list of those accepted (and their filters). The `struct list_objects_filter_options filter_options` variable used in "builtin/fetch.c" to store the parsed filters specified by `--filter=<filterspec>` is currently a static variable global to the file. As we are going to use it more in a following commit, it could become a bit less easy to understand how it's managed. To avoid that, let's make it clear that it's owned by cmd_fetch() by moving its definition into that function and making it non-static. This requires passing a pointer to it through the prepare_transport(), do_fetch(), backfill_tags(), fetch_one_setup_partial(), and fetch_one() functions, but it's quite straightforward. To overcome this, collate and delay the output to the end. Introduce `ref_update_display_info` which will hold individual update's information and also whether the update failed or succeeded. This finally allows us to iterate over all such updates and print them to the user. Using an dynamic array and strmap does add some overhead to 'git-fetch(1)', but from benchmarking this seems to be not too bad: Benchmark 1: fetch: many refs (refformat = files, refcount = 1000, revision = master) Time (mean ± σ): 42.6 ms ± 1.2 ms [User: 13.1 ms, System: 29.8 ms] Range (min … max): 40.1 ms … 45.8 ms 47 runs Benchmark 2: fetch: many refs (refformat = files, refcount = 1000, revision = HEAD) Time (mean ± σ): 43.1 ms ± 1.2 ms [User: 12.7 ms, System: 30.7 ms] Range (min … max): 40.5 ms … 45.8 ms 48 runs Summary fetch: many refs (refformat = files, refcount = 1000, revision = master) ran 1.01 ± 0.04 times faster than fetch: many refs (refformat = files, refcount = 1000, revision = HEAD) Another approach would be to move the status printing logic to be handled post the transaction being committed. That however would require adding an iterator to the ref transaction that tracks both the outcome (success/failure) and the original refspec information for each update, which is more involved infrastructure work compared to the strmap approach here. Fix a regression introduced with batched updates in 0e358de64a (fetch: use batched reference updates, 2025-05-19) when fetching references. In the `do_fetch()` function, we jump to cleanup if committing the transaction fails, regardless of whether using batched or atomic updates. This skips three subsequent operations: - Update 'FETCH_HEAD' as part of `commit_fetch_head()`. - Add upstream tracking information via `set_upstream()`. - Setting remote 'HEAD' values when `do_set_head` is true. For atomic updates, this is expected behavior. For batched updates, we want to continue with these operations even if some refs fail to update. Skipping `commit_fetch_head()` isn't actually a regression because 'FETCH_HEAD' is already updated via `append_fetch_head()` when not using '--atomic'. However, we add a test to validate this behavior. Skipping the other two operations (upstream tracking and remote HEAD) is a regression. 2025-12-10fetch: fix non-conflicting tags not being committedKarthik Nayak1-0/+8
The commit 0e358de64a (fetch: use batched reference updates, 2025-05-19) updated the 'git-fetch(1)' command to use batched updates. This batches updates to gain performance improvements. When fetching references, each update is added to the transaction. Finally, when committing, individual updates are allowed to fail with reason, while the transaction itself succeeds. One scenario which was missed here, was fetching tags. When fetching conflicting tags, the `fetch_and_consume_refs()` function returns '1', which skipped committing the transaction and directly jumped to the cleanup section. This mean that no updates were applied. This also extends to backfilling tags which is done when fetching specific refspecs which contains tags in their history. Fix this by committing the transaction when we have an error code and not using an atomic transaction. This ensures other references are applied even when some updates fail. The cleanup section is reached with `retcode` set in several scenarios: - `truncate_fetch_head()`, `open_fetch_head()` and `prune_refs()` set `retcode` before the transaction is created, so no commit is attempted. - `fetch_and_consume_refs()` and `backfill_tags()` are the primary cases this fix targets, both setting a positive `retcode` to trigger the committing of the transaction. This simplifies error handling and ensures future modifications to `do_fetch()` don't need special handling for batched updates. Add tests to check for this regression. While here, add a missing cleanup from previous test. The `do_fetch()` function contains the core of the `git-fetch(1)` logic. Part of this is to fetch and store references. This is done by 1. Creating a reference transaction (non-atomic mode uses batched updates). 2. Adding individual reference updates to the transaction. 3. Committing the transaction. 4. When using batched updates, handling the rejected updates. The following commit, will fix a bug wherein fetching tags with conflicts was causing other reference updates to fail. Fixing this requires utilizing this logic in different regions of the function. In preparation of the follow up commit, extract the committing and rejection handling logic into a separate function called `commit_ref_transaction()`. 2025-11-04refs: introduce wrapper struct for `each_ref_fn`Patrick Steinhardt1-9/+4
The `each_ref_fn` callback function type is used across our code base for several different functions that iterate through reference. There's a bunch of callbacks implementing this type, which makes any changes to the callback signature extremely noisy. An example of the required churn is e8207717f1 (refs: add referent to each_ref_fn, 2024-08-09): adding a single argument required us to change 48 files. It was already proposed back then [1] that we might want to introduce a wrapper structure to alleviate the pain going forward. While this of course requires the same kind of global refactoring as just introducing a new parameter, it at least allows us to more change the callback type afterwards by just extending the wrapper structure. One counterargument to this refactoring is that it makes the structure more opaque. While it is obvious which callsites need to be fixed up when we change the function type, it's not obvious anymore once we use a structure. That being said, we only have a handful of sites that actually need to populate this wrapper structure: our ref backends, "refs/iterator.c" as well as very few sites that invoke the iterator callback functions directly. Introduce this wrapper structure so that we can adapt the iterator interfaces more readily. During the 'prepare' phase of a reference transaction in the files backend, we create the lock files for references to be created. When using batched updates on case-insensitive filesystems, the entire batched updates would be aborted if there are conflicting names such as: refs/heads/Foo refs/heads/foo This affects all commands which were migrated to use batched updates in Git 2.51, including 'git-fetch(1)' and 'git-receive-pack(1)'. Before that, reference updates would be applied serially with one transaction used per update. When users fetched multiple references on case-insensitive systems, subsequent references would simply overwrite any earlier references. So when fetching: refs/heads/foo: 5f34ec0bfeac225b1c854340257a65b106f70ea6 refs/heads/Foo: ec3053b0977e83d9b67fc32c4527a117953994f3 refs/heads/sample: 2eefd1150e06d8fca1ddfa684dec016f36bf4e56 The user would simply end up with: refs/heads/foo: ec3053b0977e83d9b67fc32c4527a117953994f3 refs/heads/sample: 2eefd1150e06d8fca1ddfa684dec016f36bf4e56 This is buggy behavior since the user is never informed about the overrides performed and missing references. Nevertheless, the user is left with a working repository with a subset of the references. Since Git 2.51, in such situations fetches would simply fail without updating any references. Which is also buggy behavior and worse off since the user is left without any references. The error is triggered in `lock_raw_ref()` where the files backend attempts to create a lock file. When a lock file already exists the function returns a 'REF_TRANSACTION_ERROR_GENERIC'. When this happens, the entire batched updates, not individual operation, is aborted as if it were in a transaction. Change this to return 'REF_TRANSACTION_ERROR_CASE_CONFLICT' instead to aid the batched update mechanism to simply reject such errors. The change only affects batched updates since batched updates will reject individual updates with non-generic errors. So specifically this would only affect: 1. git fetch 2. git receive-pack 3. git update-ref --batch-updates This bubbles the error type up to `files_transaction_prepare()` which tries to lock each reference update. So if the locking fails, we check if the rejection type can be ignored, which is done by calling `ref_transaction_maybe_set_rejected()`. As the error type is now 'REF_TRANSACTION_ERROR_CASE_CONFLICT', the specific reference update would simply be rejected, while other updates in the transaction would continue to be applied. This allows partial application of references in case-insensitive filesystems when fetching colliding references. While the earlier implementation allowed the last reference to be applied overriding the initial references, this change would allow the first reference to be applied while rejecting consequent collisions. This should be an okay compromise since with the files backend, there is no scenario possible where we would retain all colliding references. Let's also be more proactive and notify users on case-insensitive filesystems about such problems by providing a brief about the issue while also recommending using the reftable backend, which doesn't have the same issue. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. The refs_warn_dangling_symrefs interface is a bit fragile as it passes in printf-formatting strings with expectations about the number of arguments. This patch series made it worse by adding a 2nd positional argument. But there are only two call sites, and they both use almost identical display options. Make this safer by moving the format strings into the function that uses them to make it easier to see when the arguments don't match. 2025-07-01fetch-prune: optimize dangling-ref reportingPhil Hord1-10/+10
When pruning during `git fetch` we check each pruned ref against the ref_store one at a time to decide whether to report it as dangling. This causes every local ref to be scanned for each ref being pruned. If there are N refs in the repo and M refs being pruned, this code is O(M*N). However, `git remote prune` uses a very similar function that is only O(N*log(M)). Remove the wasteful ref scanning for each pruned ref and use the faster version already available in refs_warn_dangling_symrefs. Change the message to include the original refname since the message is no longer printed immediately after the line that did just print the refname. In a repo with 126,000 refs, where I was pruning 28,000 refs, this code made about 3.6 billion calls to strcmp and consumed 410 seconds of CPU. (Invariably in that time, my remote would timeout and the fetch would fail anyway.) After this change, the same operation completes in under a second.
