2026-08-12bisect: handle dup() failure when redirecting stdoutJohannes Schindelin1-1/+8
To capture the output of each verdict command, bisect_run() temporarily redirects stdout to a temporary file via the classic dup(1) / dup2() pair, restoring it afterwards. The return value of dup(1) is not checked, however. When it fails, the saved descriptor is -1, which is then passed to close() (the issue Coverity flags), and the matching dup2() that is meant to restore stdout also fails, leaving the process with stdout still pointing at the temporary file for the remainder of the run. Treat a failed dup(1) or dup2(..., 1) as a fatal error for this bisect step: close the temporary file descriptor, report the error via error_errno(), and break out of the loop so the existing cleanup path handles the rest, just as on other failure paths in this function. Reported by Coverity as CID 1508242 ("Improper use of negative value"). 2026-08-12bisect: check get_terms return at all call sitesJohannes Schindelin1-9/+15
Six callers of get_terms() silently discard its return value. When get_terms fails (missing or truncated BISECT_TERMS file), the term strings remain NULL or empty, causing confusing downstream behavior: commands like "bisect next" or "bisect run" proceed with empty term strings, producing nonsensical ref names (refs/bisect/ with no suffix) and misleading error messages. Let's not discard the return value, but handle an error with the same message `bisect_terms()` already uses when reading the terms failed. Pointed out by Coverity. There is one slight complication here: One caller _needs_ the return value to indicate an error when the `BISECT_TERMS` file is absent, all the other call sites are totally okay with a "missing" `BISECT_TERMS` file. To address that, extend the function signature of `get_terms()` to indicate which behavior the caller wants. 2026-08-12bisect: check strbuf_getline_lf return when reading termsJohannes Schindelin1-2/+9
get_terms() in builtin/bisect.c and read_bisect_terms() in bisect.c both read the BISECT_TERMS file but do not check the strbuf_getline_lf() return values. If the file is truncated (e.g., a partial write from a crash or disk-full condition), strbuf_getline_lf returns EOF and the strbuf remains empty. strbuf_detach then returns an empty string, and the term names silently become "" instead of the expected "bad"/"good" or custom terms. In get_terms(), check for EOF and return -1 on truncation, matching the existing -1 return for a missing file. In read_bisect_terms(), die with a descriptive message when a line cannot be read, consistent with the die_errno for a non-ENOENT open failure in the same function. Unlike get_terms(), read_bisect_terms() returns void and uses die() for all error paths, so the die is the appropriate error handling here. Pointed out by Coverity. 2026-08-02bisect: add --reset-when-found to leave when doneHarald Nordgren1-9/+145
When a bisection finishes, "git bisect" reports the first bad commit but leaves the session active until "git bisect reset" is run by hand. Add a "--reset-when-found[=<where>]" option, accepted by both "git bisect start" and "git bisect run", that resets as soon as the first bad commit is found. The "original" value returns to the commit checked out before "git bisect start", while "found" leaves the first bad commit checked out; omitting the value defaults to "original". Persist the selected target in a BISECT_RESET_WHEN_FOUND state file and perform the reset quietly. Let the internal first-bad result propagate to cmd_bisect(), which performs the reset using the existing bad bisect ref after the subcommand has returned. For "git bisect run", this means BISECT_RUN has been printed and closed before cleanup, which also works on systems that cannot unlink an open file. Reject this option together with "--no-checkout", since that mode must not check out either target. 2026-08-02bisect: let bisect_reset() optionally check out quietlyHarald Nordgren1-5/+7

2026-07-10bisect: ensure non-NULL `head` before using itJohannes Schindelin1-1/+3
When `refs_resolve_ref_unsafe()` is called to resolve HEAD, and returns NULL (e.g., HEAD does not exist as a proper ref), the code falls back to `repo_get_oid("HEAD")` to try to resolve the OID directly. If that succeeds, execution continues with `head` still set to NULL. Later, that variable is passed to `repo_get_oid()` and `starts_with()`, both of which would dereference the NULL pointer. A concrete trigger for `refs_resolve_ref_unsafe()` returning NULL while `repo_get_oid()` succeeds could not be constructed against the ref backends currently in the tree; the naive case (a symbolic HEAD pointing at a nonexistent branch, in either the files or the reftable backend) fails in both calls consistently and returns via the existing `error(_("bad HEAD - I need a HEAD"))` path. Coverity, however, flags the leftover use of `head` after the outer `if (!head)` on a formal reading: `head` is still NULL at that point, and both `starts_with(head, ...)` and the second `repo_get_oid(..., head, ...)` in the else-branch would dereference it if that state were ever reached. Removing the outer check would risk regressing to a crash if a future ref backend ever manages to hit the "returns NULL for HEAD but has a valid OID for HEAD" state. Assigning the literal string "HEAD" as a safe fallback documents the intent and satisfies the analyzer without changing behavior in any code path we can currently reach. 2026-07-10bisect: handle NULL commit in `bisect_successful()`Johannes Schindelin1-0/+5
When `lookup_commit_reference_by_name()` is called to find the first bad commit, the result is passed to `repo_format_commit_message()` immediately, which dereferences commit without checking for NULL. However, the commit could be NULL, even though in practice this is unlikely because `bisect_successful()` is only called after a successful bisect run has identified the bad commit, but the ref could still become dangling due to a concurrent gc or repository corruption. 2026-05-14bisect: use selected alternate terms in status outputJonas Rebmann1-10/+13
Alternate bisect terms are helpful when the terms "good" and "bad" are confusing such as when bisecting for the resolution of an issue (the first good commit) rather than the introduction of a regression. These terms must be used when marking a commit (e.g. `git bisect new`), they will be used in reference names (e.g. refs/bisect/new) and they are used in parts of git's log output such as "<sha> was both old and new" in git bisect skip's output. However, hardcoded "good"/"bad" terms are still used in a few status messages and can cause confusion about the status of the bisect such as: $ git bisect old [sha] is the first new commit or about the required action such as: status: waiting for bad commit, 1 good commit known $ git bisect bad error: Invalid command: you're currently in a new/old bisect fatal: unknown command: 'bad' This commit updates all remaining output messages which use hardcoded "good" and "bad" terms to use the selected terms consistently across the bisect output and adds tests. 2026-05-14hex: add and use strbuf_add_oid_hex()René Scharfe1-1/+1
Add a function for adding the full hexadecimal hash value of an object ID to a strbuf. It's thread-safe and slightly more efficient than using strbuf_addstr() with oid_to_hex() because it doesn't have to determine the length of the string or copy it from the intermediate static buffer. Add and apply a semantic patch to use it throughout the code base. 2025-11-04refs: introduce wrapper struct for `each_ref_fn`Patrick Steinhardt1-12/+5
The `each_ref_fn` callback function type is used across our code base for several different functions that iterate through reference. There's a bunch of callbacks implementing this type, which makes any changes to the callback signature extremely noisy. An example of the required churn is e8207717f1 (refs: add referent to each_ref_fn, 2024-08-09): adding a single argument required us to change 48 files. It was already proposed back then [1] that we might want to introduce a wrapper structure to alleviate the pain going forward. While this of course requires the same kind of global refactoring as just introducing a new parameter, it at least allows us to more change the callback type afterwards by just extending the wrapper structure. One counterargument to this refactoring is that it makes the structure more opaque. While it is obvious which callsites need to be fixed up when we change the function type, it's not obvious anymore once we use a structure. That being said, we only have a handful of sites that actually need to populate this wrapper structure: our ref backends, "refs/iterator.c" as well as very few sites that invoke the iterator callback functions directly. Introduce this wrapper structure so that we can adapt the iterator interfaces more readily. 2025-10-22bisect: fix handling of `help` and invalid subcommandsRuoyu Zhong1-1/+5
As documented in git-bisect(1), `git bisect help` should display usage information. However, since the migration of `git bisect` to a full builtin command in 73fce29427 (Turn `git bisect` into a full built-in, 2022-11-10), this behavior was broken. Running `git bisect help` would, instead of showing usage, either fail silently if already in a bisect session, or otherwise trigger an interactive autostart prompt asking "Do you want me to do it for you [Y/n]?". Similarly, since df63421be9 (bisect--helper: handle states directly, 2022-11-10), running invalid subcommands like `git bisect foobar` also led to the same behavior. This occurred because `help` and other unrecognized subcommands were being unconditionally passed to `bisect_state`, which then called `bisect_autostart`, triggering the interactive prompt. Fix this by: 1. Adding explicit handling for the `help` subcommand to show usage; 2. Validating that unrecognized commands are actually valid state commands before calling `bisect_state`; 3. Showing an error with usage for truly invalid commands. This ensures that `git bisect help` displays the usage as documented, and invalid commands fail cleanly without entering interactive mode. Alternate terms are still handled correctly through `check_and_set_terms`. Signed-off-by: Ruoyu Zhong <zhongruoyu@outlook.com> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>

2024-09-05drop trailing newline from warning/error/die messagesJeff King1-2/+2
Our error reporting routines append a trailing newline, and the strings we pass to them should not include them (otherwise we get an extra blank line after the message). These cases were all found by looking at the results of: git grep -P '[^_](error|error_errno|warning|die|die_errno)\(.*\\n"[,)]' '*.c' Note that we _do_ sometimes include a newline in the middle of such messages, to create multiline output (hence our grep matching "," or ")" after we see the newline, so we know we're at the end of the string). It's possible that one or more of these cases could intentionally be including a blank line at the end, but having looked at them all manually, I think these are all just mistakes. 2023-12-09bisect: always clean on resetJeff King1-5/+4
Usually "bisect reset" cleans up any refs/bisect/ refs, along with meta-files like .git/BISECT_LOG. But it only does so after deciding that a bisection is active, which it does by reading BISECT_START. This is usually fine, but it's possible to get into a confusing state if the BISECT_START file is gone, but other cruft is left (this might be due to a bug, or a system crash, etc). And since "bisect reset" refuses to do anything in this state, the user has no easy way to clean up the leftover cruft. While another "bisect start" would clear the state, in the interim it can be annoying, as other tools (like our bash prompt code) think we are bisecting, and for-each-ref output may be polluted with refs/bisect/ entries. Further adding to the confusion is that running "bisect reset $some_ref" skips the BISECT_START check. So it never realizes that there's no bisection active and does the cleanup anyway! So let's just make sure we always do the cleanup, whether we looked at BISECT_START or not. If the user doesn't give us a commit to reset to, we'll still say "We are not bisecting" and skip the call to "git checkout". 2023-03-21treewide: be explicit about dependence on gettext.hElijah Newren1-0/+1
Dozens of files made use of gettext functions, without explicitly including gettext.h. This made it more difficult to find which files could remove a dependence on cache.h. Make C files explicitly include gettext.h if they are using it. However, while compat/fsmonitor/fsm-ipc-darwin.c should also gain an include of gettext.h, it was left out to avoid conflicting with an in-flight topic.
