2026-04-30ci: bump git-for-windows/setup-git-for-windows-sdk from v1 to v2Johannes Schindelin1-1/+1
The v1 of `git-for-windows/setup-git-for-windows-sdk` runs on Node.js 20, which GitHub is phasing out of the Actions runners. v2 moves the action to Node.js 24 so that the CI jobs relying on a Git for Windows SDK keep working once Node.js 20 is removed. The risk is very low: v2 contains no functional changes to the SDK setup itself, only the runtime upgrade. The action still provisions the same minimal SDK and exposes the same outputs. The sole precondition is a recent Actions Runner (>= 2.327.1), which the github.com-hosted runners already satisfy. 2026-04-30ci: bump actions/checkout from v5 to v6Johannes Schindelin1-1/+1
Every workflow currently pins `actions/checkout` to v5, which was introduced primarily to move to the Node.js 24 runtime. v6 is the next release and worth picking up so we stay on a maintained version of the action. The one behaviorally interesting change in v6: `persist-credentials` now stores the helper credentials under `$RUNNER_TEMP` instead of writing them directly into the local `.git/config`. Two implications follow: 1. In the normal case this is an unambiguous improvement -- the token no longer lands in `.git/config`, reducing the risk of inadvertently leaking it through workspace archiving (`upload-artifact` snapshots, cache entries, core dumps, ...). 2. Docker container actions require an Actions Runner of at least v2.329.0 to find the credentials in their new location. The github.com-hosted runners our CI uses are already past that version, so this does not affect us. Downstream users running self-hosted runners may need to update them before adopting this version of the action. Risk analysis: our checkout steps either check out the default repository (no special credential requirements) or, in the `vs-build` job, explicitly set `repository: microsoft/vcpkg` and `path: compat/vcbuild/vcpkg`. Neither case relies on the precise location of the persisted credentials -- subsequent steps interact with the API via the runner-provided `GITHUB_TOKEN` directly -- so the v6 credential-storage change is transparent to our workflows. The diff is purely the `@vN` identifier; there are no input or output changes. 2025-06-11ci(coverity): fix building on WindowsJohannes Schindelin1-1/+1
When I added the Coverity workflow in a56b6230d0b1 (ci: add a GitHub workflow to submit Coverity scans, 2023-09-25), I merely converted an Azure Pipeline definition that had been running successfully for ages. In the meantime, the current Coverity documentation describes a very different way to install the analysis tool, recommending to add the `bin/` directory to the _end_ of `PATH` (when originally, IIRC, it was recommended to add it to the _beginning_ of the `PATH`). This is crucial! The reason is that the current incarnation of the Windows variant of Coverity's analysis tools come with a _lot_ of DLL files in their `bin/` directory, some of them interferring rather badly with the `gcc.exe` in Git for Windows' SDK that we use to run the Coverity build. The symptom is a cryptic error message: make: *** [Makefile:2960: headless-git.o] Error 1 make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... Please verify that the build completed successfully. Warning: Emitted 0 C/C++ compilation units (0%) successfully 0 C/C++ compilation units (0%) are ready for analysis For more details, please look at: D:/a/git/git/cov-int/build-log.txt The log (which the workflow is currently not configured to reveal) then points out that the `windows.h` header cannot be found, which is _still_ not very helpful. The underlying root cause is that the `gcc.exe` in Git for Windows' SDK determines the location of the header files via the location of certain DLL files, and finding the "wrong" ones first on the `PATH` misleads that logic. Let's fix this problem by following Coverity's current recommendation and append the `bin/` directory in which `cov-int` can be found to the _end_ of `PATH`. 2025-02-03ci: set CI_JOB_IMAGE for coverity jobJeff King1-1/+1
The main GitHub Actions workflow switched away from the "$distro" variable in b133d3071a (github: simplify computation of the job's distro, 2025-01-10). Since the Coverity job also depends on our ci/install-dependencies.sh script, it needs to likewise set CI_JOB_IMAGE to find the correct dependencies (without this patch, we don't install curl and the build fails). Commit 2d65e5b6a6 (ci: rename "runs_on_pool" to "distro", 2024-04-12) renamed this variable for the main CI workflow, as well as in the ci/ scripts. Because the coverity workflow also relies on those scripts to install dependencies, it needs to be updated, too. Without this patch, the coverity build fails because we lack libcurl. We seem to be getting "Node.js 16 actions are deprecated." warnings for jobs that use checkout@v3. Except for the i686 containers job that is kept at checkout@v1 [*], update to checkout@v4, which is said to use Node.js 20. [*] 6cf4d908 (ci(main): upgrade actions/checkout to v3, 2022-12-05) refers to https://github.com/actions/runner/issues/2115 and explains why container jobs are kept at checkout@v1. 2023-10-05coverity: detect and report when the token or project is incorrectJohannes Schindelin1-1/+12
When trying to obtain the MD5 of the Coverity Scan Tool (in order to decide whether a cached version can be used or a new version has to be downloaded), it is possible to get a 401 (Authorization required) due to either an incorrect token, or even more likely due to an incorrect Coverity project name. Seeing an authorization failure that is caused by an incorrect project name was somewhat surprising to me when developing the Coverity workflow, as I found such a failure suggestive of an incorrect token instead. So let's provide a helpful error message about that specifically when encountering authentication issues. By adding the repository variable `ENABLE_COVERITY_SCAN_ON_OS` with a value, say, `["windows-latest"]`, this GitHub workflow now runs on Windows, allowing to analyze Windows-specific issues. This allows, say, the Git for Windows fork to submit Windows builds to Coverity Scan instead of Linux builds. By default, the builds are submitted to the `git` project at https://scan.coverity.com/projects/git. The Git for Windows project would like to use this workflow, too, though, and needs the builds to be submitted to the `git-for-windows` Coverity project. To that end, allow configuring the Coverity project name via the repository variable, you guessed it, `COVERITY_PROJECT`. It would add a 1GB+ download for every run, better cache it. This is inspired by the GitHub Action `vapier/coverity-scan-action`, however, it uses the finer-grained `restore`/`save` method to be able to cache the Coverity Build Tool even if an unrelated step in the GitHub workflow fails later on. 2023-09-25ci: add a GitHub workflow to submit Coverity scansJohannes Schindelin1-0/+58
Coverity is a static analysis tool that detects and generates reports on various security and code quality issues. It is particularly useful when diagnosing memory safety issues which may be used as part of exploiting a security vulnerability. Coverity's website provides a service that accepts "builds" (which contains the object files generated during a standard build as well as a database generated by Coverity's scan tool). Let's add a GitHub workflow to automate all of this. To avoid running it without appropriate Coverity configuration (e.g. the token required to use Coverity's services), the job only runs when the repository variable "ENABLE_COVERITY_SCAN_FOR_BRANCHES" has been configured accordingly (see https://docs.github.com/en/actions/learn-github-actions/variables for details how to configure repository variables): It is expected to be a valid JSON array of branch strings, e.g. `["main", "next"]`. In addition, this workflow requires two repository secrets: - COVERITY_SCAN_EMAIL: the email to send the report to, and - COVERITY_SCAN_TOKEN: the Coverity token (look in the Project Settings tab of your Coverity project). Note: The initial version of this patch used `vapier/coverity-scan-action` to benefit from that Action's caching of the Coverity tool, which is rather large. Sadly, that Action only supports Linux, and we want to have the option of building on Windows, too. Besides, in the meantime Coverity requires `cov-configure` to be runantime, and that Action was not adjusted accordingly, i.e. it seems not to be maintained actively. Therefore it would seem prudent to implement the steps manually instead of using that Action.
