multiple probes
The fields of a probe-based dynamic event (kprobe, uprobe, eprobe and
fprobe events) are created in traceprobe_define_arg_fields() by handing
the probe_arg name/type strings to trace_define_field(), which only
stores the pointers without copying. Those strings are owned by the
trace_probe and are freed when that probe is removed.
An event can have several probes attached. The field list is defined
only once, by the first probe that registers the event, but it is kept
alive by any surviving sibling probe. Deleting just that first probe by
symbol -

# delete only A (matched by symbol), B survives

frees A's args (trace_probe_cleanup() -> traceprobe_free_probe_arg()),
but trace_probe_unlink() keeps the trace_probe_event because the probe
list is not empty. The event call stays registered via B while its
fields now reference freed memory. Any field lookup then reads it, e.g.

field->name references parg->name (kstrdup'd, freed with the probe) and,
for array arguments, field->type references parg->fmt (kmalloc'd, freed
with the probe) - the scalar type otherwise points at the static
fmttype rodata, which is safe.
Have traceprobe_define_arg_fields() duplicate the name and type strings
and anchor the copies on the trace_probe_event, which embeds the event
call and outlives every individual probe; trace_probe_event_free()
releases them.
The reproducer above triggers reliably; the field lookup and the delete
both run under event_mutex, so this is a dangling reference after
removal rather than a race.
The issue was found by the autokbug dynamic kernel fuzzer at Tencent
Yunding Lab.

btf_find_struct_member() traverses into nested anonymous structures and
unions to find a struct member. However, get_bitoffset_of_field() in
trace_probe.c checked btf_type_kflag(type) using the outer parent type
instead of the actual anonymous structure/union that directly contains
the found member.
If the parent structure and anonymous structure have mismatched kflags
(e.g., the parent has kflag=0 while the anonymous structure has kflag=1
because it contains bitfields), the bitfield size encoded in the upper
8 bits of member->offset is erroneously treated as part of the byte/bit
offset, corrupting the resolved offset and failing to set last_bitsize.
Similarly, btf_find_struct_member() pushed anonymous member offsets
onto anon_stack without masking BTF_MEMBER_BIT_OFFSET() when kflag is set.
To fix this problem, update btf_find_struct_member() to return actual
containing structure/union type via member_type, use appropriate
__btf_member_bit_offset() to get bit offset, and use member_type for
btf_type_kflag() in get_bitoffset_of_field().

traceprobe_expand_meta_args() parses $argN with simple_strtoul() and
calls sprint_nth_btf_arg(n - 1, ...). For $arg0, n is 0 so the index is
-1. Because ctx->nr_params is signed, the "idx >= nr_params" guard in
sprint_nth_btf_arg() does not catch the negative index, and
ctx->params[-1].name_off is read out of bounds.
The normal per-argument path (parse_probe_vars()) already rejects
$arg0 via its argument-number check, but meta-argument expansion runs
before per-argument parsing and substitutes the value first, bypassing
that check.
Reject $arg0 explicitly during expansion.

In store_trace_entry_data(), edata is cast to unsigned long for pointer
offset arithmetic before being cast back to unsigned long *. Cast edata
to u8 * instead.

In trace_probe_compare_arg_type(), prior to entering the comparison loop,
a->nr_args and b->nr_args are checked for equality. Since the loop
condition is i < a->nr_args, i is guaranteed to be less than b->nr_args
inside the loop.
Remove the redundant (b->nr_args <= i) check.

In __set_print_fmt(), LEN_OR_ZERO is defined as (len ? len - pos : 0).
If len is non-zero but smaller than pos, len - pos evaluates to a negative
integer. When passed as a size argument to snprintf(), this negative value
is cast to a large unsigned size_t, bypassing buffer size limits.
Ensure len > pos before subtracting to avoid integer underflow.

If trace_probe_log.argc is 0 in __trace_probe_log_err(), the loop
constructing the command string will not execute and p will remain equal to
command. Writing to *(p - 1) will cause an out-of-bounds access before
command. This should not happen, but better to be treated.
Reject if trace_probe_log.argc is 0.

trace_probe_match_command_args()
In trace_probe_match_command_args(), a stack buffer buf[MAX_ARGSTR_LEN + 1]
(256 bytes) is used to format "<name>=<comm>". However, since name can
be up to 32 bytes (MAX_ARG_NAME_LEN) and comm up to 255 bytes
(MAX_ARGSTR_LEN), the formatted string can exceed 256 bytes and get
truncated by snprintf(), causing spurious argument matching failures.
Instead of formatting into a temporary buffer on stack, compare the
argument name, the '=' delimiter, and the comm expression directly.

To avoid potential stack overflows on limited kernel stacks, convert
parse_probe_arg() from a recursive function into a loop-based
implementation with a simple local state stack.
Since recursion is eliminated using a loop with a fixed-size
stack in the context, this restricts the dereference nesting
depth. The maximum nesting depth of dereferences is now restricted
to the same limit as typecasts (TRACEPROBE_MAX_NESTED_LEVEL, which
is 8) and reports the same TOO_MANY_NESTED error. Update ftrace
selftests to reflect this restriction and simplify the checks.
Note that this change slightly alters the behavior of nested
dereferencing in fetcharg. Previously, dereferencing without BTF
allowed for up to 14 levels of nesting, whereas dereferencing
with BTF was limited to 3 levels. With this change, the nesting
depth is now limited to 8 levels in both cases.

Decompose parse_probe_arg() by extracting register, memory/symbol,
dereference, immediate, and default BTF/CPU parsing handlers into
dedicated static helper functions (parse_probe_arg_register,
parse_probe_arg_mem_symbol, parse_probe_arg_deref, parse_probe_arg_imm,
and parse_probe_arg_default). This modularizes the recursive argument
parser and improves readability.

fetcharg
When tracing the kernel local variables, sometimes we need to get the
CPU local variables. To access it, current simple dereference is not
enough.
Thus, introduce a special this_cpu_read() dereference to access per-cpu
variable for the current CPU (accessing other CPU variable may race with
updates on other CPUs). Also this_cpu_ptr() is for accessing per-cpu
pointer.
Those are working as same as the kernel percpu macro.

Since we can use the BTF to cast value to a structure pointer type,
it is useful to introduce "$current" special variable support to
fetcharg.
User can define a fetcharg to access current task_struct properties
using BTF info. e.g.

Add a field specifier option for the typecast. This works like
container_of() macro.
(STRUCT[,FIELD[.FIELD2...]])VAR
This is equivalent to :
container_of(VAR, struct STRUCT, FIELD[.FIELD2...])
For example:
echo "f tick_nohz_handler next_tick=(tick_sched,sched_timer)timer->next_tick" >> dynamic_events
This will trace tick_nohz_handler() with its tick_sched::next_tick which
is converted from @timer by contianer_of(tick, struct tick_sched, sched_timer).
So, if you enabkle both fprobes:tick_nohz_handler__entry and
timer:hrtimer_expire_entry events, we will see something like:

This allows type casting to various fetchargs without parentheses
by recursively calling parse_probe_arg on the target when type
casting is used.
For example, this allows the following expressions:
- (STRUCT)%REG->FIELD
- (STRUCT)$stackN->FIELD
- (STRUCT)@SYM->FIELD
Note that @SYM+/-OFFSET with typecast needs parentheses like:
- (STRUCT)(@SYM-8)->FIELD

When we hit an open parenthesis right after typecast closing
parenthesis, it means we have nested typecast. This allows us to
typecast a generic data member in a structure to a pointer to
another structure.
For example, to cast a DATA_MEMBER of VAR structure to STRUCT pointer
and get MEMBER value.
(STRUCT)(VAR->DATA_MEMBER)->MEMBER
Also, we can nest typecast.
(STRUCT1)((STRUCT2)$ARG->FIELD2)->FIELD1
Currently the max nest level is limited to 3.
This also allows user to use typecasting for registers or stacks on
kprobe events. e.g.
(STRUCT)(%ax)->MEMBER
(STRUCT)($stack0)->MEMBER

Support BTF typecast feature on other probe events, but only if it is
kernel function entry or return, and must use function parameter name
or $retval. This means you can do:
(STRUCT)PARAM->MEMBER
Note: you can not use other variables like $stackN, %reg etc. That
needs nesting support.
To support other probe events, we just need to use last_struct type
when we find a function parameter in parse_btf_arg().
This also updates <tracefs>/README file to show struct typecast.

For debugging probe events, it is helpful to verify the compiled
fetch instructions for each probe argument. This introduces a new
kernel config CONFIG_PROBE_EVENTS_DUMP_FETCHARG to decode the
instruction sequence of each argument and display it under a
commented line starting with '#' immediately following the dynamic
event definition (such as in dynamic_events, kprobe_events,
uprobe_events, etc.).
For example:

The shared probe argument parser rejects file offsets for kernel probes.
This path is used outside the kprobe event parser too, but the diagnostic
currently says "with kprobe" even when emitted from another probe path.
Make the diagnostic probe-agnostic.

Sashiko found that user can cause this WARN_ON_ONCE() easily
with adding a kprobe event based on a raw address with BTF
parameter.
Since this is not an unexpected condition, remove the
WARN_ON_ONCE().

Add syntax to the parsing of eprobes to be able to typecast a trace event
field that is a pointer to a structure.
Currently, a dereference must be a number, where the user has to figure
out manually the offset of a member of a structure that they want to
dereference.
But for event probes that records a field that happens to be a pointer to
a structure, it cannot dereference these values with BTF naming, but
must use numerical offsets.
For example, to find out what device a sk_buff is pointing to in the
net_dev_xmit trace event, one must first use gdb to find the offsets of the
members of the structures:
(gdb) p &((struct sk_buff *)0)->dev
$1 = (struct net_device **) 0x10
(gdb) p &((struct net_device *)0)->name
$2 = (char (*)[16]) 0x118
And then use the raw numbers to dereference:

Store probe entry fetch instructions in the probe_entry_arg
allocation instead of allocating a separate instruction array.
This keeps the entry fetch code tied to the entry argument lifetime while
leaving regular probe_arg instruction arrays separately allocated and
freed.

Fix to point the error offset correctly for eprobe argument error.
In the cleanup commit 1b8b0cd754cd ("tracing/probes: Move event parameter
fetching code to common parser"), due to incorrect backward compatibility
aimed at conforming to the test specifications, the error location was set
to 0 when a non-existent formal parameter was specified for Eprobe.
However, this should be corrected in both the test and the implementation
to point correct error position.

There currently isn't a max limit an event probe can be. One could make an
event greater than PAGE_SIZE, which makes the event useless because if
it's bigger than the max event that can be recorded into the ring buffer,
then it will never be recorded.
A event probe should never need to be greater than 3K, so make that the
max size. As long as the max is less than the max that can be recorded
onto the ring buffer, it should be fine.

parse_probe_arg() accepts quoted immediate strings and passes the body
after the opening quote to __parse_imm_string(). That helper currently
computes strlen(str) and immediately dereferences str[len - 1], which
underflows when the body is empty and not closed with double-quotation.
Reject empty non-closed immediate strings before checking for the closing quote.

This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split
over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the
resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next
line.
Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for
me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the
middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial.
So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the
syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed'
scripts.
The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want
whitespace cleanup anyway.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

Pull tracing fixes from Steven Rostedt:
- Fix accounting of stop_count in file release
On opening the trace file, if "pause-on-trace" option is set, it will
increment the stop_count. On file release, it checks if stop_count is
set, and if so it decrements it. Since this code was originally
written, the stop_count can be incremented by other use cases. This
makes just checking the stop_count not enough to know if it should be
decremented.
Add a new iterator flag called "PAUSE" and have it set if the open
disables tracing and only decrement the stop_count if that flag is
set on close.
- Remove length field in trace_seq_printf() of print_synth_event()
When printing the synthetic event that has a static length array
field, the vsprintf() of the trace_seq_printf() triggered a
"(efault)" in the output. That's because the print_fmt replaced the
"%.*s" with "%s" causing the arguments to be off.

After a recent change in clang to strengthen uninitialized warnings [1],
it points out that in one of the error paths in parse_btf_arg(), params
is used uninitialized:

Cleanup __store_entry_arg() so that it is easier to understand.
The main complexity may come from combining the loops for finding
stored-entry-arg and max-offset and appending new entry.
This split those different loops into 3 parts, lookup the same
entry-arg, find the max offset and append new entry.

Since the shared trace_probe_log variable can be accessed and
modified via probe event create operation of kprobe_events,
uprobe_events, and dynamic_events, it should be protected.
In the dynamic_events, all operations are serialized by
`dyn_event_ops_mutex`. But kprobe_events and uprobe_events
interfaces are not serialized.
To solve this issue, introduces dyn_event_create(), which runs
create() operation under the mutex, for kprobe_events and
uprobe_events. This also uses lockdep to check the mutex is
held when using trace_probe_log* APIs.

strlen() returns a string length excluding the null byte. If the string
length equals to the maximum buffer length, the buffer will have no
space for the NULL terminating character.
This commit checks this condition and returns failure for it.
