Patch series "better block swap batching and a different take on swap_ops
v5".
This series makes use of the swap_iocb for block as well so that it
doesn't do inefficient single-bio I/O, and then rebases the swap_ops from
Baoquan on top of the now very different method structure.
When running doing kernels builds, which is a workload that doesn't really
do much THP anonymous memory it still gets 2x clustering for writeout and
1.2x for reading back swap in. The overall times do not actually change,
though.
This patch (of 7):
Provide a wrapper for the shmem abuses in drm to prepare for swap I/O
refactoring by keeping swap_iocb handling entirely contained in mm/.

Move the hash table to the super block to remove excessive overhead in case
of small number of xattrs per inode.
Add linked list to the inode, used for listxattr and eviction. Listxattr
uses rcu protection to iterate the list of xattrs.
Before being made per-sb, lazy allocation was protected by inode lock. Now
inode lock no longer provides sufficient exclusion, so use cmpxchg() to
ensure atomicity.
Though I haven't found a description of this pattern, after some research
it seems that cmpxchg_release() and READ_ONCE() should provide the
necessary memory barriers.
Use simple_xattr_free_rcu() in simple_xattrs_free(). This is needed because
the hash table is now shared between inodes and lookup on a different inode
might be running the compare function on the just freed element within the
RCU grace period.
Following stats are based on slabinfo diff, after creating 100k empty
files, then adding a "user.test=foo" xattr to each:
v7.0 (no rhashtable):
File creation: 993.40 bytes/file
Xattr addition: 79.99 bytes/file
v7.1-rc2 (per-inode rhashtable):
File creation: 939.73 bytes/file
Xattr addition: 1296.08 bytes/file
v7.1-rc2 + this patch (per-sb rhashtable)
File creation: 946.84 bytes/file
Xattr addition: 111.86 bytes/file
The overhead of a single xattr is reduced to nearly v7.0 levels. The per
xattr overhead is slightly larger due to the addition of three pointers to
struct simple_xattr.

Adapt tmpfs/shmem to use the rhashtable-based xattr path and switch
from an embedded struct to pointer-based lazy allocation.
Change shmem_inode_info.xattrs from embedded 'struct simple_xattrs' to
a pointer 'struct simple_xattrs *', initialized to NULL. This avoids
the rhashtable overhead for every tmpfs inode, which helps when a lot of
inodes exist.
The xattr store is allocated on first use:
- shmem_initxattrs(): Allocates via simple_xattrs_alloc() when
security modules set initial xattrs during inode creation.
- shmem_xattr_handler_set(): Allocates on first setxattr, with a
short-circuit for removal when no xattrs are stored yet.
All read paths (shmem_xattr_handler_get, shmem_listxattr) check for
NULL xattrs pointer and return -ENODATA or 0 respectively.
Replaced xattr entries are freed via simple_xattr_free_rcu() to allow
concurrent RCU readers to finish.
shmem_evict_inode() conditionally frees the xattr store only when
allocated.
Also change simple_xattr_add() from void to int to propagate
rhashtable insertion failures. shmem_initxattrs() is the only caller.

In order to be able to use only vma_flags_t in vm_area_desc we must adjust
shmem file setup functions to operate in terms of vma_flags_t rather than
vm_flags_t.
This patch makes this change and updates all callers to use the new
functions.

This series introduces the Live Update Orchestrator, a kernel
subsystem designed to facilitate live kernel updates using a
kexec-based reboot. This capability is critical for cloud
environments, allowing hypervisors to be updated with minimal
downtime for running virtual machines. LUO achieves this by
preserving the state of selected resources, such as memory,
devices and their dependencies, across the kernel transition.
As a key feature, this series includes support for preserving
memfd file descriptors, which allows critical in-memory data, such
as guest RAM or any other large memory region, to be maintained in
RAM across the kexec reboot.

To prepare a shmem inode for live update, its index -> folio mappings must
be serialized. Once the mappings are serialized, they cannot change since
it would cause the serialized data to become inconsistent. This can be
done by pinning the folios to avoid migration, and by making sure no
folios can be added to or removed from the inode.
While mechanisms to pin folios already exist, the only way to stop folios
being added or removed are the grow and shrink file seals. But file seals
come with their own semantics, one of which is that they can't be removed.
This doesn't work with liveupdate since it can be cancelled or error out,
which would need the seals to be removed and the file's normal
functionality to be restored.
Introduce SHMEM_F_MAPPING_FROZEN to indicate this instead. It is internal
to shmem and is not directly exposed to userspace. It functions similar
to F_SEAL_GROW | F_SEAL_SHRINK, but additionally disallows hole punching,
and can be removed.

shmem_inode_info::flags can have the VM flags VM_NORESERVE and VM_LOCKED.
These are used to suppress pre-accounting or to lock the pages in the
inode respectively. Using the VM flags directly makes it difficult to add
shmem-specific flags that are unrelated to VM behavior since one would
need to find a VM flag not used by shmem and re-purpose it.
Introduce SHMEM_F_NORESERVE and SHMEM_F_LOCKED which represent the same
information, but their bits are independent of the VM flags. Callers can
still pass VM_NORESERVE to shmem_get_inode(), but it gets transformed to
the shmem-specific flag internally.
No functional changes intended.

In a recent commit, I inadvertently changed a comparison from being an
unsigned comparison (on 64-bit systems) to being a signed comparison
(which it had always been on 32-bit systems). This led to a sporadic
fstests failure.
To make sure this comparison is always unsigned, introduce a new type,
uoff_t which is the unsigned version of loff_t. Generally file sizes
are restricted to being a signed integer, but in these two places it is
convenient to pass -1 to indicate "up to the end of the file".

Unmapped was added as a parameter to __folio_split() and related call
sites to support splitting of folios already in the midst of a migration.
This special case arose for device private folio migration since during
migration there could be a disconnect between source and destination on
the folio size.
Introduce folio_split_unmapped() to handle this special case. Also
refactor code and add __folio_freeze_and_split_unmapped() helper that is
common to both __folio_split() and folio_split_unmapped().
This in turn removes the special casing introduced by the unmapped
parameter in __folio_split().

Patch series "mm: establish const-correctness for pointer parameters", v6.
This series is to improved const-correctness in the low-level
memory-management subsystem, which provides a basis for further
constification further up the call stack (e.g. filesystems).
I started this work when I tried to constify the Ceph filesystem code, but
found that to be impossible because many "mm" functions accept non-const
pointers, even though they modify nothing.
This patch (of 12):
We select certain test functions which either invoke each other, functions
that are already const-ified, or no further functions.
It is therefore relatively trivial to const-ify them, which provides a
basis for further const-ification further up the call stack.

Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton:
- The series "zram: optimal post-processing target selection" from
Sergey Senozhatsky improves zram's post-processing selection
algorithm. This leads to improved memory savings.
- Wei Yang has gone to town on the mapletree code, contributing several
series which clean up the implementation:
- "refine mas_mab_cp()"
- "Reduce the space to be cleared for maple_big_node"
- "maple_tree: simplify mas_push_node()"
- "Following cleanup after introduce mas_wr_store_type()"
- "refine storing null"
- The series "selftests/mm: hugetlb_fault_after_madv improvements" from
David Hildenbrand fixes this selftest for s390.
- The series "introduce pte_offset_map_{ro|rw}_nolock()" from Qi Zheng
implements some rationaizations and cleanups in the page mapping
code.
- The series "mm: optimize shadow entries removal" from Shakeel Butt
optimizes the file truncation code by speeding up the handling of
shadow entries.
- The series "Remove PageKsm()" from Matthew Wilcox completes the
migration of this flag over to being a folio-based flag.
- The series "Unify hugetlb into arch_get_unmapped_area functions" from
Oscar Salvador implements a bunch of consolidations and cleanups in
the hugetlb code.
- The series "Do not shatter hugezeropage on wp-fault" from Dev Jain
takes away the wp-fault time practice of turning a huge zero page
into small pages. Instead we replace the whole thing with a THP. More
consistent cleaner and potentiall saves a large number of pagefaults.
- The series "percpu: Add a test case and fix for clang" from Andy
Shevchenko enhances and fixes the kernel's built in percpu test code.
- The series "mm/mremap: Remove extra vma tree walk" from Liam Howlett
optimizes mremap() by avoiding doing things which we didn't need to
do.
- The series "Improve the tmpfs large folio read performance" from
Baolin Wang teaches tmpfs to copy data into userspace at the folio
size rather than as individual pages. A 20% speedup was observed.
- The series "mm/damon/vaddr: Fix issue in
damon_va_evenly_split_region()" fro Zheng Yejian fixes DAMON
splitting.
- The series "memcg-v1: fully deprecate charge moving" from Shakeel
Butt removes the long-deprecated memcgv2 charge moving feature.
- The series "fix error handling in mmap_region() and refactor" from
Lorenzo Stoakes cleanup up some of the mmap() error handling and
addresses some potential performance issues.

from Mike Rapoport teaches x86 to use large pages for
read-only-execute module text.
- The series "page allocation tag compression" from Suren Baghdasaryan
is followon maintenance work for the new page allocation profiling
feature.
- The series "page->index removals in mm" from Matthew Wilcox remove
most references to page->index in mm/. A slow march towards shrinking
struct page.
- The series "damon/{self,kunit}tests: minor fixups for DAMON debugfs
interface tests" from Andrew Paniakin performs maintenance work for
DAMON's self testing code.
- The series "mm: zswap swap-out of large folios" from Kanchana Sridhar
improves zswap's batching of compression and decompression. It is a
step along the way towards using Intel IAA hardware acceleration for
this zswap operation.
- The series "kasan: migrate the last module test to kunit" from
Sabyrzhan Tasbolatov completes the migration of the KASAN built-in
tests over to the KUnit framework.
- The series "implement lightweight guard pages" from Lorenzo Stoakes

Shmem has a separate interface (different from anonymous pages) to control
huge page allocation, that means shmem THP can be enabled while anonymous
THP is disabled. However, in this case, khugepaged will not start to
collapse shmem THP, which is unreasonable.
To fix this issue, we should call start_stop_khugepaged() to activate or
deactivate the khugepaged thread when setting shmem mTHP interfaces.
Moreover, add a new helper shmem_hpage_pmd_enabled() to help to check
whether shmem THP is enabled, which will determine if khugepaged should be
activated.

After the commit 7fb1b252afb5 ("mm: shmem: add mTHP support for anonymous
shmem"), we can configure different policies through the multi-size THP
sysfs interface for anonymous shmem. But currently "THPeligible"
indicates only whether the mapping is eligible for allocating THP-pages as
well as the THP is PMD mappable or not for anonymous shmem, we need to
support semantics for mTHP with anonymous shmem similar to those for mTHP
with anonymous memory.

Patch series "shmem,tmpfs: general maintenance".
Mostly just cosmetic mods in mm/shmem.c, but the last two enforcing the
"size=" limit better. 8/8 goes into percpu counter territory, and could
stand alone.
This patch (of 8):
Shave 32 bytes off (the 64-bit) shmem_inode_info. There was a 4-byte
pahole after stop_eviction, better filled by fsflags. And the 24-byte
dir_offsets can only be used by directories, whereas shrinklist and
swaplist only by shmem_mapping() inodes (regular files or long symlinks):
so put those into a union. No change in mm/shmem.c is required for this.

Unsigned long is large enough for free_ispace, on 64-bit and on 32-bit:

The current cursor-based directory offset mechanism doesn't work
when a tmpfs filesystem is exported via NFS. This is because NFS
clients do not open directories. Each server-side READDIR operation
has to open the directory, read it, then close it. The cursor state
for that directory, being associated strictly with the opened
struct file, is thus discarded after each NFS READDIR operation.
Directory offsets are cached not only by NFS clients, but also by
user space libraries on those clients. Essentially there is no way
to invalidate those caches when directory offsets have changed on
an NFS server after the offset-to-dentry mapping changes. Thus the
whole application stack depends on unchanging directory offsets.
The solution we've come up with is to make the directory offset for
each file in a tmpfs filesystem stable for the life of the directory
entry it represents.
shmem_readdir() and shmem_dir_llseek() now use an xarray to map each
directory offset (an loff_t integer) to the memory address of a
struct dentry.

Many userfaultfd ioctl functions take both a 'mode' and a 'wp_copy'
argument. In future commits we plan to plumb the flags through to more
places, so we'd be proliferating the very long argument list even further.
Let's take the time to simplify the argument list. Combine the two
arguments into one - and generalize, so when we add more flags in the
future, it doesn't imply more function arguments.
Since the modes (copy, zeropage, continue) are mutually exclusive, store
them as an integer value (0, 1, 2) in the low bits. Place combine-able
flag bits in the high bits.
This is quite similar to an earlier patch proposed by Nadav Amit
("userfaultfd: introduce uffd_flags" [1]). The main difference is that
patch only handled flags, whereas this patch *also* combines the "mode"
argument into the same type to shorten the argument list.

In doing experimentations with shmem having the option to avoid swap
becomes a useful mechanism. One of the *raves* about brd over shmem is
you can avoid swap, but that's not really a good reason to use brd if we
can instead use shmem. Using brd has its own good reasons to exist, but
just because "tmpfs" doesn't let you do that is not a great reason to
avoid it if we can easily add support for it.
I don't add support for reconfiguring incompatible options, but if we
really wanted to we can add support for that.
To avoid swap we use mapping_set_unevictable() upon inode creation, and
put a WARN_ON_ONCE() stop-gap on writepages() for reclaim.

Pass vm_flags as a parameter to shmem_is_huge, rather than reading the
flags from the vm_area_struct in question. This allows the updated flags
from hugepage_madvise to be passed to the check, which is necessary
because madvise does not update the vm_area_struct's flags until after
hugepage_madvise returns.
This fixes an issue when shmem_enabled=madvise, where MADV_HUGEPAGE on
shmem was not able to register the mm_struct with khugepaged. Prior to
cd89fb065099, the mm_struct was registered by MADV_HUGEPAGE regardless of
the value of shmem_enabled (which was only checked when scanning vmas).

Patch series "mm: add file/shmem support to MADV_COLLAPSE", v4.
This series builds on top of the previous "mm: userspace hugepage
collapse" series which introduced the MADV_COLLAPSE madvise mode and added
support for private, anonymous mappings[2], by adding support for file and
shmem backed memory to CONFIG_READ_ONLY_THP_FOR_FS=y kernels.
File and shmem support have been added with effort to align with existing
MADV_COLLAPSE semantics and policy decisions[3]. Collapse of shmem-backed
memory ignores kernel-guiding directives and heuristics including all
sysfs settings (transparent_hugepage/shmem_enabled), and tmpfs huge= mount
options (shmem always supports large folios). Like anonymous mappings, on
successful return of MADV_COLLAPSE on file/shmem memory, the contents of
memory mapped by the addresses provided will be synchronously pmd-mapped
THPs.
This functionality unlocks two important uses:
(1) Immediately back executable text by THPs. Current support provided
by CONFIG_READ_ONLY_THP_FOR_FS may take a long time on a large
system which might impair services from serving at their full rated
load after (re)starting. Tricks like mremap(2)'ing text onto
anonymous memory to immediately realize iTLB performance prevents
page sharing and demand paging, both of which increase steady state
memory footprint. Now, we can have the best of both worlds: Peak
upfront performance and lower RAM footprints.
(2) userfaultfd-based live migration of virtual machines satisfy UFFD
faults by fetching native-sized pages over the network (to avoid
latency of transferring an entire hugepage). However, after guest
memory has been fully copied to the new host, MADV_COLLAPSE can
be used to immediately increase guest performance.
khugepaged has received a small improvement by association and can now
detect and collapse pte-mapped THPs. However, there is still work to be
done along the file collapse path. Compound pages of arbitrary order
still needs to be supported and THP collapse needs to be converted to
using folios in general. Eventually, we'd like to move away from the
read-only and executable-mapped constraints currently imposed on eligible
files and support any inode claiming huge folio support. That said, I
think the series as-is covers enough to claim that MADV_COLLAPSE supports
file/shmem memory.
Patches 1-3 Implement the guts of the series.
Patch 4 Is a tracepoint for debugging.
Patches 5-9 Refactor existing khugepaged selftests to work with new
memory types + new collapse tests.
Patch 10 Adds a userfaultfd selftest mode to mimic a functional test

This patch (of 10):
Extend 'mm/thp: add flag to enforce sysfs THP in hugepage_vma_check()' to
shmem, allowing callers to ignore
/sys/kernel/transparent_hugepage/shmem_enabled and tmpfs huge= mount.
This is intended to be used by MADV_COLLAPSE, and the rationale is
analogous to the anon/file case: MADV_COLLAPSE is not coupled to
directives that advise the kernel's decisions on when THPs should be
considered eligible. shmem/tmpfs always claims large folio support,
regardless of sysfs or mount options.

With all callers removed, remove this wrapper function. The flags are now
mysteriously called SGP, but I think we can live with that.

ext[234] have always allowed unimplemented chattr flags to be set, but
other filesystems have tended to be stricter. Follow the stricter
approach for tmpfs: I don't want to have to explain why csu attributes
don't actually work, and we won't need to update the chattr(1) manpage;
and it's never wrong to start off strict, relaxing later if persuaded.
Allow only a (append only) i (immutable) A (no atime) and d (no dump).
Although lsattr showed 'A' inherited, the NOATIME behavior was not being
inherited: because nothing sync'ed FS_NOATIME_FL to S_NOATIME. Add
shmem_set_inode_flags() to sync the flags, using inode_set_flags() to
avoid that instant of lost immutablility during fileattr_set().
But that change switched generic/079 from passing to failing: because
FS_IMMUTABLE_FL and FS_APPEND_FL had been unconventionally included in the
INHERITED fsflags: remove them and generic/079 is back to passing.

Pass wp_copy into shmem_mfill_atomic_pte() through the stack, then apply
the UFFD_WP bit properly when the UFFDIO_COPY on shmem is with
UFFDIO_COPY_MODE_WP. wp_copy lands mfill_atomic_install_pte() finally.
Note: we must do pte_wrprotect() if !writable in
mfill_atomic_install_pte(), as mk_pte() could return a writable pte (e.g.,
when VM_SHARED on a shmem file).

Various filesystems (including ext4) now support file creation time.
This adds such support for tmpfs-based filesystems.
Note that using shmem_getattr() on other file types than regular
requires that shmem_is_huge() check type, to stop incorrect
HPAGE_PMD_SIZE blksize.
