Pull vfs fixes from Christian Brauner:
- netfs:
- Fix an uninitialized return value in netfs_unbuffered_write()
when preparing the first subrequest fails
- For partial unbuffered/DIO writes return the amount transferred
rather than an error
- Update i_size with the amount actually written when a partial
transfer ends in an error
- Fix a subrequest reference leak when the io_iter ends up empty
- Handle netfs_alloc_subrequest() failure during unbuffered writes
- Load all readahead folios into the rolling buffer upfront and
drop the readahead references once the first subrequest is
dispatched
- Mark folios for copy-to-cache while issuing subrequests
- Fix read progress reporting
- afs:
- Add the missing kunmap in the error path of afs_dir_search_bucket()
- Fix a double kunmap in afs_edit_dir_remove()
- Don't free an existing server's endpoint state when cleaning up a
candidate server in afs_lookup_server()
- Unbind peers removed from a server's address list
- ufs:
- Load the cylinder group metadata before creating the root dentry
- Validate the cylinder group index and rotor positions before
caching them
- Treat an unreadable directory block as not empty
- exec:
- Close the close-on-exec files before taking exec_update_lock
Closing a file can block on the filesystem, so a hung filesystem
blocked everything that takes exec_update_lock and a FUSE server
inspecting the calling process could deadlock
- Drop the bprm loader before closing bprm->file in free_bprm()
- exit: Hold a reference to thread_pid across proc_flush_pid()
- reboot: Fix a use-after-free on cad_pid
- nsfs: Keep the namespace tree fields out of the rcu_head used by
kfree_rcu()
- nstree: Check listing permission before taking a namespace
reference in listns()
- super: Return 0 when a nested thaw drops its hold while other
freezers remain
- ext4: Don't set I_METADATA_WRITEBACK during fastcommit replay
- adfs: Free s_fs_info in ->kill_sb()
- autofs: Free the inode info allocated in autofs_fill_super() when
the root inode allocation fails
- ovl: Return EINVAL instead of EIO on a user namespace mismatch now
that it's a plain refusal and not an internal error
- cachefiles: Don't cast the variable-length coherency data to a
__be64 in the coherency tracepoint

cad_pid is a single kernel-wide struct pid pointer. proc_do_cad_pid()
reads it and passes it to pid_vnr() without protecting the lifetime of
the referenced struct pid. A concurrent writer can replace cad_pid and
drop the final reference to the old struct pid after the reader has
loaded the pointer but before pid_vnr() has finished dereferencing it,
causing a use-after-free.
kill_cad_pid() has the same lifetime race when it passes cad_pid to
kill_pid().
At the time this issue was reported, an unprivileged user could reach the
sysctl through user and PID namespaces because cad_pid was registered in
pid_table[]. Moving cad_pid back to the global reboot sysctl table
corrected that namespace and permission mismatch, but did not fix the
underlying lifetime race.
Fix this by treating cad_pid as an RCU-protected pointer at both read
sites and by waiting for a grace period before dropping the old reference
on the write side.
call_rcu(&old_pid->rcu, ...) cannot be used here because free_pid()
also queues pid->rcu; queueing the same rcu_head twice can corrupt the
RCU callback list.
Original KASAN crash stack:
kernel/pid.c:545 pid_nr_ns() # reads freed pid->level
kernel/pid.c:556 pid_vnr() # calls pid_nr_ns()
kernel/pid.c:775 proc_do_cad_pid() # calls pid_vnr(cad_pid)

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm
Pull more MM updates from Andrew Morton:
- "mm/rmap: index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by anonymous pgoff"
(Lorenzo Stoakes)
Index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by their anonymous page offset
to resolve confusion around reverse mapping for zeroed and CoW'd
file-backed memory.
Use this new VMA anonymous page offset tracking to eliminate index
conflicts and lay the foundation for scalable CoW performance
improvements.
- "promote mapped executable folios after first usage for MGLRU"
(Baolin Wang)
Make MGLRU's protection of mapped executable file folios more
reliable. Follow the classical LRU's logic, promoting mapped
executable file folios after their first usage to give executable
code a better chance to stay in memory and improve workload
performance.
- "mm: vmscan: fix node reclaim ignoring swappiness parameter" (Ridong
Chen)
Fix per-node proactive reclaim interface's ignoring the swappiness
parameter when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled by consolidating
sc_swappiness() into a single function that checks
proactive_swappiness regardless of kernel configuration.
- "mm/vmscan: reduce lru_lock contention via vmstat-derived
scan-balance cost" (Usama Arif)
Reduce lru_lock contention in the reclaim path by deriving
scan-balance costs from vmstat counters rather than lock-acquired
producer updates.
Read and decay these cost signals on the reclaim side under a
dedicated per-lruvec lock, reducing total LRU lock wait time by over
60% without impacting scan throughput.
- "zram: fix zram issues reported by sashiko" (Sergey Senozhatsky)
Fix two low-risk zram bugs which Sashiko spotted in drive-by review.
- "Honor XA_FLAGS_ACCOUNT in xas_split_alloc() and charge to folio's
memcg" (Zi Yan)
Fix xas_split_alloc() by enabling target folio memcg charging during
splits and adding the missing __GFP_ACCOUNT flag for proper XArray
node memory accounting.
- "selftests/mm: use pattern matching in .gitignore" (Pratyush Mallick)
Replace hardcoded binary names in selftests/mm/.gitignore with a
generic pattern-matching rule to automatically ignore generated test
files and avoid manual updates when adding new tests.
- "mm/page_ext: remove pgdat_page_ext_init()" (Sang-Heon Jeon)
Make the incompatibility between FLATMEM and NUMA explicit in
mm/Kconfig and remove the unused pgdat_page_ext_init() function.
- "zram: fix zstd error paths and add parameter validation" (Haoqin
Huang)
Clean up zram compression backends by removing redundant error
cleanup, adding parameter and dictionary validation, auto-prefixing
algorithm error logs, and resetting parameters prior to
reinitialization.
- "zram: fix stale scan bounds after reinitialization" (Longlong Xia)
Prevent out-of-bounds slot accesses during concurrent zram resets by
moving table scan bound calculations under dev_lock in
writeback_store() and read_block_state().
- "add anon mTHP collapse test cases" (Baolin Wang)
Extend selftests helper functions to support arbitrary page orders
and add new test cases and options for mTHP collapse in khugepaged.
- "selftests/mm: Handle unsupported and transient test conditions"
(Muhammad Usama Anjum)
Update MM selftests to report a SKIP status instead of a failure when
required kernel or filesystem features are unsupported, while adding
retry logic for transient page migration errors.
- "mm/zswap: Fixes and improves the zswap shrink" (Hao Jia)
Fix the missing zswap global shrinker when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled
and extend shrink_memcg() to support batch writeback for improved
writeback efficiency.
- "alloc_tag: introduce IOCTL-based filtering for MAP" (Suren
Baghdasaryan)
Introduce an IOCTL-based binary interface for memory allocation
profiling that enables kernel-side filtering before per-CPU counter
aggregation.
This eliminates the text-parsing overhead of /proc/allocinfo and
provides up to a 20x speedup by transferring only filtered allocation
data to userspace.
- "better block swap batching and a different take on swap_ops v5"
(Christoph Hellwig)
Refactor block swap I/O to use swap_iocb for batching instead of
single-bio requests and rebase the swap_ops interface, achieving
faster swap throughput during kernel builds.
- "mm: kmemleak: reduce transient false positives by confirming leaks"
(Catalin Marinas)
Reduce false-positive kmemleak reports by combining two kmemleak
enhancements that add a second confirmation scan and a configurable
minimum unreferenced scan count module parameter.
- "mm: kmemleak: default min_unref_scans to 2 for verbose kernels"
(Breno Leitao)
Auto-scanning kernels can generate false-positive memory leak reports
on single scans, so this patch defaults min_unref_scans to 2 when
CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_VERBOSE is enabled to require a second
confirming scan.
- "swap_ops updates" (Christoph Hellwig)
Batching I/O for synchronous swap devices causes performance
regressions and filesystem-based swap suffers from double-indirection
overhead. This series resolves both issues by reintroducing per-folio
writes for synchronous swap and allowing filesystems to directly
export their own swap_ops.
- "mm/khugepaged: several cleanups" (Nico Pache)
khugepaged accumulated redundant state-checking patterns and outdated
comments following mTHP integration. Introduce dedicated helpers for
PTE validation and event counting while refreshing the internal
documentation.
- "maple_tree: lock checking and clean ups" (Liam Howlett)
Syzbot reports incorrectly blame memory management exit paths for
locking bugs, maple tree erase operations risk allocation failures
without gfp flags and internal documentation lacks clarity.
Improve lock error detection, update docs, fix race and allocation
edge cases and optimize erase allocations using a fallback to
GFP_KERNEL | GFP_NOFAIL.

Add an 8 bit small sequence counter to the held_lock struct to detect if
the lock as been dropped and reacquired. This is useful when a data
structure depends on a constant locking context, but is not able to detect
locking and unlocking of the lock through its own API.
Since the __lock_unpin_lock() will no longer detect underflow by casting
the unsigned int to a signed int, update the casting code to use a temp
variable for calculations using a signed int.

Pull cgroup updates from Tejun Heo:
- Attach path bug fixes: migrations spanning multiple source or
destination cpusets were mishandled, most visibly leaving thread
affinities stale when the controller is disabled in a threaded
subtree. Configuration writes could also race an in-flight attach and
apply stale state, and the deadline task count could get corrupted by
concurrent updates, skewing SCHED_DEADLINE admission decisions.
- Memory binding bug fixes: which node masks get applied differed
between the binding update paths, and tasks cloned with
CLONE_INTO_CGROUP skipped rebinding entirely. Rebinding also now runs
once per process instead of repeating for every thread sharing the
mm.
- Overhead removals with no behavior change: CPU hotplug iterated tasks
of cpusets that just inherit the parent's effective masks, and the
slab-spreading task flag was still being maintained although the SLAB
allocator that consumed it is long gone.
- Data-race annotations for benign races so that KCSAN reports stay
meaningful, selftest coverage for the fixes above along with
flakiness and portability fixes, and documentation corrections.

Pull SMP core updates from Thomas Gleixner:
- Reduce the preemption disabled sections in smp_call_function*().
The various smp call functions keep preemption disabled accross the
full operation which includes the wait for completion. Especially the
latter can take some time when one of the target CPUs is not
immediately responding to the IPI, which can result in large latency
spikes.
To improve this provide a per task CPU mask to track the CPUs to wait
for. That makes the information required for the wait task local and
therefore allows to reenable preemption before the wait.
While this comes with moderate extra memory cost this reduces SMP
function call induced latency measured in a fleet for high priority
tasks from ~17ms to ~1.5ms (~90%).
- Reduce the overhead of the CSD debug code by replacing the heavy
memory barriers with smp_store_release()/acquire()
- Remove obsolute unused hotplug states

Commit 16a1d968358a ("mm/slab: remove mm/slab.c and slab_def.h")
removed the SLAB allocator, the only allocator that implemented cpuset
slab spreading. Commit 61a182ab61a6 ("cgroup/cpuset: Remove
cpuset_do_slab_mem_spread()") then removed the last task_spread_slab()
caller. Commit 3ab67a9ce82f ("cgroup/cpuset: Mark memory_spread_slab as
obsolete") marked the legacy control obsolete.
cpuset still updates PFA_SPREAD_SLAB when tasks attach to a legacy
cpuset and walks all tasks in a cpuset when memory_spread_slab changes.
Remove the unused task flag and its helpers, and make spread task
updates depend only on memory_spread_page.
Keep the memory_spread_slab control and CS_SPREAD_SLAB state so legacy
users retain the existing write, readback and inheritance behavior.
Update the comments and documentation to describe only page-cache
spreading as functional.

syzbot is reporting KCOV state corruption on PREEMPT_RT kernels, for the
temporary storage used for saving/restoring remote KCOV state is currently
allocated as the per-CPU area.
On PREEMPT_RT kernels, softirq handlers run as preemptible task threads
(e.g., ksoftirqd). If a softirq context preempts a task running a remote
KCOV session, it safely saves the task's state into the per-CPU area.
However, if that softirq thread is subsequently preempted by a higher-
priority softirq thread on the same CPU, the second softirq will overwrite
the same per-CPU area, permanently destroying the original task's KCOV
state.
Fix this data corruption by moving the temporary storage from the per-CPU
area to the per-thread area. Since each softirq thread now owns its own
task context, nested softirq preemption no longer causes data overwrites.
Note that while the temporary storage is now on a per-thread basis, the
per-CPU kcov_percpu_data.lock must be retained, for we need to ensure that
kcov_remote_start() and kcov_remote_stop() operate atomically without
racing against asynchronous interrupts that manipulate the current task's
KCOV state.
It is likely that GFP_KERNEL allocation by vmalloc_node() in kcov_init()
has already called panic() before returning NULL, for there will be no
OOM-killable userspace processes when __init function of built-in module
runs. But this patch also fixes crashing the kernel when vmalloc_node()
in kcov_init() returned NULL, for kcov_init() left per-CPU irq_area == NULL
but kcov_remote_start() depends on per-CPU irq_area != NULL, resulting in
(1) doing vmalloc() in kcov_remote_start() despite !in_task() context
(2) out-of-array-bounds access if (1) succeeded but
kcov->remote_size < CONFIG_KCOV_IRQ_AREA_SIZE
(3) always leak memory allocated by (1), eventually killing all
OOM-killable userspace processes
problems.

smp_call_function_many_cond() uses the per-CPU cfd->cpumask as the list
of remote CPUs to wait for. That is safe while the caller remains pinned
to the current CPU for the whole operation, because another task cannot
run on the same CPU and reuse the per-CPU mask.
The synchronous wait is the long-latency part of the operation. To make
that wait preemptible, the mask iterated by csd_lock_wait() must remain
stable even if the task is preempted or migrates. If the wait used the
per-CPU cfd->cpumask after dropping CPU pinning, another task scheduled
on the original CPU could enter smp_call_function_many_cond() and
overwrite the mask while the first task is still iterating it.
Give each task private IPI cpumask storage and use it as the wait mask in
smp_call_function_many_cond(). Other cpumask storage choices do not fit
this use case:
- Per-CPU storage is the state that becomes unsafe once the wait is
made preemptible. After the caller drops CPU pinning, another task
scheduled on the original CPU can enter smp_call_function_many_cond()
and reuse the same per-CPU mask.
- Stack storage is not suitable for large NR_CPUS or
CONFIG_CPUMASK_OFFSTACK=y configurations. The wait mask needs to
scale with cpumask_size(), and putting that storage on the stack is
not acceptable on large systems.
- Allocating the mask inside smp_call_function_many_cond() would put an
allocation and a failure path in the generic IPI path. A sleeping
allocation is not suitable because callers have historically only
provided a preempt-disabled context, not a sleepable one. GFP_ATOMIC
would avoid sleeping, but a failure fallback would make the latency
improvement opportunistic instead of guaranteed.
The users are not limited to a small, pre-identifiable class of tasks. On
x86, ordinary tasks can reach this path through TLB flushes during exit,
unmap and reclaim, so allocating the mask only for a known subset of
tasks is not straightforward.
The memory cost is explicit: one word is added to task_struct. When
cpumask_size() fits in that word, the mask is stored inline and no
separate allocation is needed. Larger systems allocate cpumask_size() per
task; on x86-64 NR_CPUS=8192 this is 1 KiB per task. For context,
x86 already carries several KiB of per-task architecture and FPU state,
depending on the enabled features and configuration. That does not make
the extra cpumask free, but it puts the large-NR_CPUS case in
perspective.

Change fair/cgroup to a single runqueue.
Infamously fair/cgroup isn't working for a number of people; typically
the complaint is latencies and/or overhead. The latency issue is due
to the intermediate entries that represent a combination of tasks and
thereby obfuscate the runnability of tasks.
The approach here is to leave the cgroup hierarchy as is; including
the intermediate enqueue/dequeue but move the actual EEVDF runqueue
outside. This means things like the shares_weight approximation are
fully preserved.
That is, given a hierarchy like:
R
|
se--G1
/ \
G2--se se--G3
/ \ |
T1--se se--T2 se--T3
This is fully maintained for load tracking, however the EEVDF parts of
cfs_rq/se go unused for the intermediates and are instead connected
like:
_R_
/ | \
T1 T2 T3
Since the effective weight of the entities is determined by the
hierarchy, this gets recomputed on enqueue,set_next_task and tick.
Notably, the effective weight (se->h_load) is computed from the
hierarchical fraction: se->load / cfs_rq->load.
Since EEVDF is now exclusively operating on rq->cfs, it needs to
consider cfs_rq->h_nr_queued rather than cfs_rq->nr_queued. Similarly,
only tasks can get delayed, simplifying some of the cgroup cleanup.
One place where additional information was required was
set_next_task() / put_prev_task(), where we need to track 'current'
both in the hierarchical sense (cfs_rq->h_curr) and in the flat sense
(cfs_rq->curr).
As a result of only having a single level to pick from, much of the
complications in pick_next_task() and preemption go away.
Since many of the hierarchical operations are still there, this won't
immediately fix the performance issues, but hopefully it will fix some
of the latency issues.

Add a real_fs field to task_struct that always mirrors the fs field.
This lays the groundwork for distinguishing between a task's permanent
fs_struct and one that is temporarily overridden via scoped_with_init_fs().
When a kthread temporarily overrides current->fs for path lookup, we
need to know the original fs_struct for operations like exit_fs() and
unshare_fs_struct() that must operate on the real, permanent fs.
For now real_fs is always equal to fs. It is maintained alongside fs in
all the relevant paths: exit_fs(), unshare_fs_struct(),
switch_fs_struct(), and copy_fs().

Add a new is_blocked flag to the task struct. This flag is set
by try_to_block_task() and cleared by ttwu_do_wakeup() and
tracks if the task is blocked.
Traditionally this would mirror !p->on_rq, however due things
like DELAY_DEQUEUE and PROXY_EXEC, this can diverge, so its
useful to manage separately.
Additionally with this, we might be able to get rid of the
p->se.sched_delayed (ab)use in the core code (eventually).
Taken whole cloth from Peter's email:
https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20260501132143.GC1026330@noisy.programming.kicks-ass.net/
With a few additional p->is_blocked = 0 in a few cases where
we return current if blocked_on gets zeroed or there is
no owner. This may hint that these current special cases
might be dropped eventually.
This change also helps resolve wait-queue stalls seen with

This patch adds logic so try_to_wake_up() will notice if we are
waking a task where blocked_on == PROXY_WAKING, and if necessary
dequeue the task so the wakeup will naturally return-migrate the
donor task back to a cpu it can run on.
This helps performance as we do the dequeue and wakeup under the
locks normally taken in the try_to_wake_up() and avoids having
to do proxy_force_return() from __schedule(), which has to
re-take similar locks and then force a pick again loop.
This was split out from the larger proxy patch, and

Commit cd959a3562050d ("sched_ext: Add a DL server for sched_ext tasks")
introduced an ext_server deadline server to protect sched_ext tasks from
fair/RT starvation, mirroring the existing fair_server.
Currently, both servers reserve their 50ms/1000ms bandwidth at boot,
regardless of whether a BPF scheduler is loaded. Unused bandwidth is
still reclaimed at runtime by other classes, but the static reservation
prevents the RT class from implicitly using that headroom when one of
the two classes is guaranteed to be empty.
A sysadmin can work around this by writing
/sys/kernel/debug/sched/{fair,ext}_server/cpu*/runtime, but that
requires manual action and not all systems expose debugfs.
A better approach is to make server bandwidth reservations dynamic: only
the scheduling policy that is currently active should register its
reservation, while the inactive one should not artificially hold
capacity (keeping both reservations only when the BPF scheduler is
running in partial mode):
+---------------------------------------------+-------------+------------+
| BPF scheduler state | fair server | ext server |
+---------------------------------------------+-------------+------------+
| not loaded (default boot) | reserved | none |
| loaded full mode (!SCX_OPS_SWITCH_PARTIAL) | none | reserved |
| loaded partial mode (SCX_OPS_SWITCH_PARTIAL)| reserved | reserved |
+---------------------------------------------+-------------+------------+
To achieve this, introduce an "attached/detached" state for each
deadline server, so the kernel can decide whether a server's bandwidth
should be accounted in global bandwidth tracking.
At boot, the system starts with only the fair server contributing to
bandwidth accounting. When a BPF scheduler is enabled, the ext server is
attached and may replace or complement the fair server depending on
whether full or partial mode is used. When sched_ext is disabled, the
system restores the previous deadline bandwidth values and behavior.
The transition logic ensures that switching between scheduling modes is
consistent and reversible, without losing runtime configuration or
requiring manual intervention.

Allow the same userspace thread to simultaneously collect normal coverage
in syscall context (KCOV_ENABLE) and remote coverage of asynchronous work
created by the thread (KCOV_REMOTE_ENABLE). With this, remote KCOV
coverage becomes useful for generic fuzzing and not just fuzzing of
specific data injection interfaces.
This requires that the task_struct::kcov_* fields are separated into ones
that are used by the task that generates coverage, and ones that are used
by the task that requested remote coverage. To split this up:
- Split task_struct::kcov into kcov and kcov_remote. kcov_task_exit() now
has to clean up both separately.
- Only use task_struct::kcov_mode on the task that generates coverage.
- Only reset task_struct::kcov_handle on the task that requested remote
coverage.
After this change, fields used by the task that generates coverage are:
- kcov_mode
- kcov_size
- kcov_area
- kcov
- kcov_sequence
- kcov_softirq
Fields used by the task that requested remote coverage are:
- kcov_remote
- kcov_handle

installs it under task_lock + exec_update_lock with
task_exec_state_replace(). init_task uses a static instance.
The dumpable mode now lives on task->exec_state->dumpable.
task->mm->flags no longer carries dumpability; MMF_DUMPABLE_MASK is
removed, but MMF_DUMPABLE_BITS is reserved so MMF_DUMP_FILTER_* bit
positions remain stable for the /proc/<pid>/coredump_filter ABI. The
task->user_dumpable cache bit and its assignment in exit_mm() are
removed; readers go through get_dumpable(task) directly.
coredump_params gains a snapshot field cprm.dumpable, populated from
get_dumpable(current) at vfs_coredump() entry, replacing the previous
__get_dumpable(cprm->mm_flags) consumers in fs/coredump.c and
fs/pidfs.c.
The user namespace recorded at execve() is consulted by
__ptrace_may_access() and by /proc/PID/* owner derivation. Move the
captured user_ns onto task_exec_state, which stays attached to the task
past exit_mm() and across exit_files().
bprm grows a user_ns field staged in bprm_mm_init() with the caller's
user_ns, narrowed by would_dump() to the closest privileged ancestor,
and consumed by exec_mmap() via alloc_task_exec_state(bprm->user_ns).
free_bprm() releases the staging reference.
mm_struct loses ->user_ns entirely. Initializers in init-mm, efi_mm,
and the implicit one in mm_init()/dup_mm()/mm_alloc() are removed;
__mmdrop() drops the matching put_user_ns(). The kthread_use_mm()
WARN_ON_ONCE(!mm->user_ns) is no longer meaningful and goes too.

There is a race condition that, after a task is enqueued
on a runqueue, task_llc(p) may change due to CPU hotplug,
because the llc_id is dynamically allocated and adjusted
at runtime.
Therefore, checking task_llc(p) to determine whether the
task is being dequeued from its preferred LLC is unreliable
and can cause inconsistent values.
To fix this problem, record whether p is enqueued on its
preferred LLC, in order to pair with account_llc_dequeue()
to maintain a consistent nr_pref_llc_running per runqueue.
This bug was reported by sashiko, and the solution was once
suggested by Prateek.

Prateek and Tingyin reported that memory-intensive workloads (such as
stream) can saturate memory bandwidth and caches on the preferred LLC
when sched_cache aggregates too many threads.
To mitigate this, estimate a process's memory footprint by comparing
its NUMA balancing fault statistics to the size of the LLC. If the
footprint exceeds the LLC size, skip cache-aware scheduling.
Note that footprint is only an approximation of the memory footprint,
since the kernel lacks suitable metrics to estimate the real working
set. If a user-provided hint is available in the future, it would be
more accurate. A later patch will allow users to provide a hint to
adjust this threshold.

counts
A performance regression was observed by Prateek when running hackbench
with many threads per process (high fd count). To avoid this, processes
with a large number of active threads are excluded from cache-aware
scheduling.
With sched_cache enabled, record the number of active threads in each
process during the periodic task_cache_work(). While iterating over
CPUs, if the currently running task belongs to the same process as the
task that launched task_cache_work(), increment the active thread count.
If the number of active threads within the process exceeds the number
of Cores (divided by the SMT number) in the LLC, do not enable
cache-aware scheduling. However, on systems with a smaller number of
CPUs within 1 LLC, like Power10/Power11 with SMT4 and an LLC size of 4,
this check effectively disables cache-aware scheduling for any process.
One possible solution suggested by Peter is to use an LLC-mask instead
of a single LLC value for preference. Once there are a 'few' LLCs as
preference, this constraint becomes a little easier. It could be an
enhancement in the future.
For users who wish to perform task aggregation regardless, a debugfs knob
is provided for tuning in a subsequent change.

The 'dumpability' of a task is fundamentally about the memory image of
the task - the concept comes from whether it can core dump or not - and
makes no sense when you don't have an associated mm.
And almost all users do in fact use it only for the case where the task
has a mm pointer.
But we have one odd special case: ptrace_may_access() uses 'dumpable' to
check various other things entirely independently of the MM (typically
explicitly using flags like PTRACE_MODE_READ_FSCREDS). Including for
threads that no longer have a VM (and maybe never did, like most kernel
threads).
It's not what this flag was designed for, but it is what it is.
The ptrace code does check that the uid/gid matches, so you do have to
be uid-0 to see kernel thread details, but this means that the
traditional "drop capabilities" model doesn't make any difference for
this all.
Make it all make a *bit* more sense by saying that if you don't have a
MM pointer, we'll use a cached "last dumpability" flag if the thread
ever had a MM (it will be zero for kernel threads since it is never
set), and require a proper CAP_SYS_PTRACE capability to override.

Adds infrastructure to enable cache-aware load balancing,
which improves cache locality by grouping tasks that share resources
within the same cache domain. This reduces cache misses and improves
overall data access efficiency.
In this initial implementation, threads belonging to the same process
are treated as entities that likely share working sets. The mechanism
tracks per-process CPU occupancy across cache domains and attempts to
migrate threads toward cache-hot domains where their process already
has active threads, thereby enhancing locality.
This provides a basic model for cache affinity. While the current code
targets the last-level cache (LLC), the approach could be extended to
other domain types such as clusters (L2) or node-internal groupings.
At present, the mechanism selects the CPU within an LLC that has the
highest recent runtime. Subsequent patches in this series will use this
information in the load-balancing path to guide task placement toward
preferred LLCs.
In the future, more advanced policies could be integrated through NUMA
balancing-for example, migrating a task to its preferred LLC when spare
capacity exists, or swapping tasks across LLCs to improve cache affinity.
Grouping of tasks could also be generalized from that of a process
to be that of a NUMA group, or be user configurable.

return-migration
As we add functionality to proxy execution, we may migrate a
donor task to a runqueue where it can't run due to cpu affinity.
Thus, we must be careful to ensure we return-migrate the task
back to a cpu in its cpumask when it becomes unblocked.
Peter helpfully provided the following example with pictures:
"Suppose we have a ww_mutex cycle:
,-+-* Mutex-1 <-.
Task-A ---' | | ,-- Task-B
`-> Mutex-2 *-+-'
Where Task-A holds Mutex-1 and tries to acquire Mutex-2, and
where Task-B holds Mutex-2 and tries to acquire Mutex-1.
Then the blocked_on->owner chain will go in circles.
Task-A -> Mutex-2
^ |
| v
Mutex-1 <- Task-B
We need two things:
- find_proxy_task() to stop iterating the circle;
- the woken task to 'unblock' and run, such that it can
back-off and re-try the transaction.
Now, the current code [without this patch] does:
__clear_task_blocked_on();
wake_q_add();
And surely clearing ->blocked_on is sufficient to break the
cycle.
Suppose it is Task-B that is made to back-off, then we have:
Task-A -> Mutex-2 -> Task-B (no further blocked_on)
and it would attempt to run Task-B. Or worse, it could directly
pick Task-B and run it, without ever getting into
find_proxy_task().
Now, here is a problem because Task-B might not be runnable on
the CPU it is currently on; and because !task_is_blocked() we
don't get into the proxy paths, so nobody is going to fix this
up.
Ideally we would have dequeued Task-B alongside of clearing
->blocked_on, but alas, [the lock ordering prevents us from
getting the task_rq_lock() and] spoils things."
Thus we need more than just a binary concept of the task being
blocked on a mutex or not.
So allow setting blocked_on to PROXY_WAKING as a special value
which specifies the task is no longer blocked, but needs to
be evaluated for return migration *before* it can be run.
This will then be used in a later patch to handle proxy
return-migration.

So far, we have been able to utilize the mutex::wait_lock
for serializing the blocked_on state, but when we move to
proxying across runqueues, we will need to add more state
and a way to serialize changes to this state in contexts
where we don't hold the mutex::wait_lock.
So introduce the task::blocked_lock, which nests under the
mutex::wait_lock in the locking order, and rework the locking
to use it.

of tnew1. As a consequence a subsequent schedule in might fail to acquire a
(transitional) CID and the machine stalls.
Move the invocation of sched_mm_cid_fork() after the new task becomes
visible in the thread and the task list to prevent this.
This also makes it symmetrical vs. exit() where the task is removed as CID
user before the task is removed from the thread and task lists.

Pull scheduler updates from Ingo Molnar:
"Scheduler Kconfig space updates:
- Further consolidate configurable preemption modes (Peter Zijlstra)
Reduce the number of architectures that are allowed to offer
PREEMPT_NONE and PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY, reducing the number of
preemption models from four to just two: 'full' and 'lazy' on
up-to-date architectures (arm64, loongarch, powerpc, riscv, s390,
x86).
None and voluntary are only available as legacy features on
platforms that don't implement lazy preemption yet, or which don't
even support preemption.
The goal is to eventually remove cond_resched() and voluntary
preemption altogether.
RSEQ based 'scheduler time slice extension' support (Thomas Gleixner

This allows a thread to request a time slice extension when it enters
a critical section to avoid contention on a resource when the thread
is scheduled out inside of the critical section.
- Add fields and constants for time slice extension
- Provide static branch for time slice extensions
- Add statistics for time slice extensions
- Add prctl() to enable time slice extensions

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull locking updates from Ingo Molnar:
"Lock debugging:
- Implement compiler-driven static analysis locking context checking,
using the upcoming Clang 22 compiler's context analysis features
(Marco Elver)
We removed Sparse context analysis support, because prior to
removal even a defconfig kernel produced 1,700+ context tracking
Sparse warnings, the overwhelming majority of which are false
positives. On an allmodconfig kernel the number of false positive
context tracking Sparse warnings grows to over 5,200... On the plus
side of the balance actual locking bugs found by Sparse context
analysis is also rather ... sparse: I found only 3 such commits in
the last 3 years. So the rate of false positives and the
maintenance overhead is rather high and there appears to be no
active policy in place to achieve a zero-warnings baseline to move
the annotations & fixers to developers who introduce new code.
Clang context analysis is more complete and more aggressive in
trying to find bugs, at least in principle. Plus it has a different
model to enabling it: it's enabled subsystem by subsystem, which
results in zero warnings on all relevant kernel builds (as far as
our testing managed to cover it). Which allowed us to enable it by
default, similar to other compiler warnings, with the expectation
that there are no warnings going forward. This enforces a
zero-warnings baseline on clang-22+ builds (Which are still limited
in distribution, admittedly)
Hopefully the Clang approach can lead to a more maintainable
zero-warnings status quo and policy, with more and more subsystems
and drivers enabling the feature. Context tracking can be enabled
for all kernel code via WARN_CONTEXT_ANALYSIS_ALL=y (default
disabled), but this will generate a lot of false positives.
( Having said that, Sparse support could still be added back,
if anyone is interested - the removal patch is still
relatively straightforward to revert at this stage. )

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/axboe/linux
Pull io_uring bpf filters from Jens Axboe:
"This adds support for both cBPF filters for io_uring, as well as task
inherited restrictions and filters.
seccomp and io_uring don't play along nicely, as most of the
interesting data to filter on resides somewhat out-of-band, in the
submission queue ring.
As a result, things like containers and systemd that apply seccomp
filters, can't filter io_uring operations.
That leaves them with just one choice if filtering is critical -
filter the actual io_uring_setup(2) system call to simply disallow
io_uring. That's rather unfortunate, and has limited us because of it.
io_uring already has some filtering support. It requires the ring to
be setup in a disabled state, and then a filter set can be applied.
This filter set is completely bi-modal - an opcode is either enabled
or it's not. Once a filter set is registered, the ring can be enabled.
This is very restrictive, and it's not useful at all to systemd or
containers which really want both broader and more specific control.
This first adds support for cBPF filters for opcodes, which enables
tighter control over what exactly a specific opcode may do. As
examples, specific support is added for IORING_OP_OPENAT/OPENAT2,
allowing filtering on resolve flags. And another example is added for
IORING_OP_SOCKET, allowing filtering on domain/type/protocol. These
are both common use cases. cBPF was chosen rather than eBPF, because
the latter is often restricted in containers as well.
These filters are run post the init phase of the request, which allows
filters to even dip into data that is being passed in struct in user
memory, as the init side of requests make that data stable by bringing
it into the kernel. This allows filtering without needing to copy this
data twice, or have filters etc know about the exact layout of the
user data. The filters get the already copied and sanitized data
passed.
On top of that support is added for per-task filters, meaning that any
ring created with a task that has a per-task filter will get those
filters applied when it's created. These filters are inherited across
fork as well. Once a filter has been registered, any further added
filters may only further restrict what operations are permitted.
Filters cannot change the return value of an operation, they can only
permit or deny it based on the contents"
