2026-08-04mm/slab: introduce kfree_rcu_nolock()Harry Yoo (Oracle)1-0/+22
Currently, k[v]free_rcu() cannot be called in unknown context since it could lead to a deadlock when called in the middle of k[v]free_rcu(). Make users' lives easier by introducing kfree_rcu_nolock() variant, now that kfree_rcu_sheaf() is available on PREEMPT_RT and __kfree_rcu_sheaf() handles unknown context. When sheaves path fails, kfree_rcu_nolock() falls back to defer_kfree_rcu() that uses an irq work to free the object via kvfree_call_rcu(). In most cases, the sheaves path is expected to succeed and therefore it's unnecessary to introduce additional complexity to the existing kvfree_rcu batching by teaching it how to handle unknown context. Since defer_kfree_rcu() can be called on caches without sheaves, move deferred_work_barrier() and rcu_barrier() outside the branch in kvfree_rcu_barrier_on_cache(). Now that deferred kvfree_rcu objects are submitted to kvfree_call_rcu() after deferred_work_barrier() and may end up in RCU sheaves, deferred_work_barrier() must be invoked before flush_rcu_sheaves_on_cache(). Since the RCU sheaf path has not been used on !KVFREE_RCU_BATCHED kernels, always fall back when kvfree_rcu() is not batched, for consistency. kvfree_rcu_barrier{,_on_cache()}() on !KVFREE_RCU_BATCHED are moved to mm/slab_common.c to invoke deferred_work_barrier() before rcu_barrier(). 2026-08-04mm/slab: introduce struct kvfree_rcu_head for kvfree_rcu batchingHarry Yoo (Oracle)1-4/+6
rcu_head is overkill for kvfree_rcu() because the callback function is always either kfree(), vfree(), or free_large_kmalloc(), and thus there is no need for a function pointer. kvfree_rcu batching reuses the field to store the start address of an object, however, this is not strictly needed because we can calculate the start address in the slowpath. For the purpose of kvfree_rcu batching, it is sufficient to implement a linked list using a single pointer. Introduce a new struct called kvfree_rcu_head (the name was suggested by Vlastimil Babka), which is similar to rcu_head but is only a single pointer to build a linked list, without a function pointer, when CONFIG_KVFREE_RCU_BATCHED=y. When kvfree_rcu is not batched, kvfree_rcu_head is the same size as rcu_head. Note that shrinking struct kvfree_rcu_head on CONFIG_KVFREE_RCU_BATCHED=n kernels would inevitably require additional complexity and also some sort of batching (which defeats the purpose of the config option) because it cannot fall back to call_rcu(). For now there are no user-visible changes to the API. k[v]free_rcu() simply casts rcu_head to kvfree_rcu_head. While this does not affect the API, it allows kfree_rcu_nolock() to reuse kvfree_rcu batching as a fallback when trylock or sheaf allocation fails. Stop storing the object pointer in rcu_head.func and instead calculate the object's start address in kvfree_rcu_list(). Factor out the existing logic to calculate the start address from kvfree_rcu_cb() to kvmalloc_obj_start_addr(). To avoid losing the KASAN tag, calculate the offset and subtract it from the address of the kvfree_rcu_head. 2026-07-31rcu-tasks: Convert cond_resched_tasks_rcu_qs() to static inlinePaul E. McKenney1-6/+6
In order to make "cc -E" output less annoying, this commit converts cond_resched_tasks_rcu_qs() to static inline. You know, the READ_ONCE() and WRITE_ONCE() macros used to be *so* simple. ;-) Reported-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@kernel.org>
2026-07-23rcu: Mark __rcu_access_pointer() as context_unsafe()Paul E. McKenney1-2/+2
A simple comparison of a pointer returned by rcu_access_pointer() results in a context-analysis warning for lockless inspection of the RCU-protected (also known as __rcu-protected) pointer. This can be suppressed by placing context_unsafe() calls around calls rcu_access_pointer(), but this is messy and distracting. This commit therefore wraps the underlying __rcu_access_pointer() macro with a call to context_unsafe(), thereby informing the context-analysis code that rcu_access_pointer() may safely be invoked outside of an RCU read-side critical section. 2026-07-23rcu: Rename struct rcu_gp_oldstate to rcu_gp_seqPuranjay Mohan1-2/+11
The polled grace-period state structure rcu_gp_oldstate holds a snapshot of the normal (and, on SMP, expedited) grace-period sequence numbers. Upcoming changes store this structure in the callback segment list, where the "oldstate" name reads poorly: there it represents the grace period a segment is waiting on and is also compared against the current grace-period state. Rename struct rcu_gp_oldstate to the more neutral struct rcu_gp_seq, and shorten its members rgos_norm and rgos_exp to norm and exp. Local variables and parameters of this type are renamed from rgosp/rgos to gsp/gs accordingly. While at it, provide a single definition of the structure in rcupdate.h rather than separate Tiny-RCU and Tree-RCU definitions, and give it the ->exp field unconditionally. Tiny RCU does not track expedited grace periods and leaves ->exp unused, but a single definition that always has ->exp lets the shared callback code in rcu_segcblist.c reference it without CONFIG_SMP guards, including on !SMP builds. No functional change. Signed-off-by: Puranjay Mohan <puranjay@kernel.org> Reviewed-by: Frederic Weisbecker <frederic@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@kernel.org>

2026-04-07bpf: Retire rcu_trace_implies_rcu_gp()Kumar Kartikeya Dwivedi1-12/+0
RCU Tasks Trace grace period implies RCU grace period, and this guarantee is expected to remain in the future. Only BPF is the user of this predicate, hence retire the API and clean up all in-tree users. RCU Tasks Trace is now implemented on SRCU-fast and its grace period mechanism always has at least one call to synchronize_rcu() as it is required for SRCU-fast's correctness (it replaces the smp_mb() that SRCU-fast readers skip). So, RCU-tt GP will always imply RCU GP. Reviewed-by: Puranjay Mohan <puranjay@kernel.org> Reviewed-by: Paul E. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull locking updates from Ingo Molnar: "Lock debugging: - Implement compiler-driven static analysis locking context checking, using the upcoming Clang 22 compiler's context analysis features (Marco Elver) We removed Sparse context analysis support, because prior to removal even a defconfig kernel produced 1,700+ context tracking Sparse warnings, the overwhelming majority of which are false positives. On an allmodconfig kernel the number of false positive context tracking Sparse warnings grows to over 5,200... On the plus side of the balance actual locking bugs found by Sparse context analysis is also rather ... sparse: I found only 3 such commits in the last 3 years. So the rate of false positives and the maintenance overhead is rather high and there appears to be no active policy in place to achieve a zero-warnings baseline to move the annotations & fixers to developers who introduce new code. Clang context analysis is more complete and more aggressive in trying to find bugs, at least in principle. Plus it has a different model to enabling it: it's enabled subsystem by subsystem, which results in zero warnings on all relevant kernel builds (as far as our testing managed to cover it). Which allowed us to enable it by default, similar to other compiler warnings, with the expectation that there are no warnings going forward. This enforces a zero-warnings baseline on clang-22+ builds (Which are still limited in distribution, admittedly) Hopefully the Clang approach can lead to a more maintainable zero-warnings status quo and policy, with more and more subsystems and drivers enabling the feature. Context tracking can be enabled for all kernel code via WARN_CONTEXT_ANALYSIS_ALL=y (default disabled), but this will generate a lot of false positives. 2026-02-10mm/slab: allow freeing kmalloc_nolock()'d objects using kfree[_rcu]()Harry Yoo1-2/+2
Slab objects that are allocated with kmalloc_nolock() must be freed using kfree_nolock() because only a subset of alloc hooks are called, since kmalloc_nolock() can't spin on a lock during allocation. This imposes a limitation: such objects cannot be freed with kfree_rcu(), forcing users to work around this limitation by calling call_rcu() with a callback that frees the object using kfree_nolock(). Remove this limitation by teaching kmemleak to gracefully ignore cases when kmemleak_free() or kmemleak_ignore() is called without a prior kmemleak_alloc(). Unlike kmemleak, kfence already handles this case, because, due to its design, only a subset of allocations are served from kfence. With this change, kfree() and kfree_rcu() can be used to free objects that are allocated using kmalloc_nolock(). 2026-01-05compiler-context-analysis: Remove Sparse supportMarco Elver1-14/+1
Remove Sparse support as discussed at [1]. The kernel codebase is still scattered with numerous places that try to appease Sparse's context tracking ("annotation for sparse", "fake out sparse", "work around sparse", etc.). Eventually, as more subsystems enable Clang's context analysis, these places will show up and need adjustment or removal of the workarounds altogether. 2026-01-05rcu: Support Clang's context analysisMarco Elver1-24/+53
Improve the existing annotations to properly support Clang's context analysis. The old annotations distinguished between RCU, RCU_BH, and RCU_SCHED; however, to more easily be able to express that "hold the RCU read lock" without caring if the normal, _bh(), or _sched() variant was used we'd have to remove the distinction of the latter variants: change the _bh() and _sched() variants to also acquire "RCU". When (and if) we introduce context locks to denote more generally that "IRQ", "BH", "PREEMPT" contexts are disabled, it would make sense to acquire these instead of RCU_BH and RCU_SCHED respectively. The above change also simplified introducing __guarded_by support, where only the "RCU" context lock needs to be held: introduce __rcu_guarded, where Clang's context analysis warns if a pointer is dereferenced without any of the RCU locks held, or updated without the appropriate helpers. The primitives rcu_assign_pointer() and friends are wrapped with context_unsafe(), which enforces using them to update RCU-protected pointers marked with __rcu_guarded. 2026-01-01rcu: Clean up after the SRCU-fastification of RCU Tasks TracePaul E. McKenney1-30/+1
Now that RCU Tasks Trace has been re-implemented in terms of SRCU-fast, the ->trc_ipi_to_cpu, ->trc_blkd_cpu, ->trc_blkd_node, ->trc_holdout_list, and ->trc_reader_special task_struct fields are no longer used. In addition, the rcu_tasks_trace_qs(), rcu_tasks_trace_qs_blkd(), exit_tasks_rcu_finish_trace(), and rcu_spawn_tasks_trace_kthread(), show_rcu_tasks_trace_gp_kthread(), rcu_tasks_trace_get_gp_data(), rcu_tasks_trace_torture_stats_print(), and get_rcu_tasks_trace_gp_kthread() functions and all the other functions that they invoke are no longer used. Also, the TRC_NEED_QS and TRC_NEED_QS_CHECKED CPP macros are no longer used. Neither are the rcu_tasks_trace_lazy_ms and rcu_task_ipi_delay rcupdate module parameters and the TASKS_TRACE_RCU_READ_MB Kconfig option. This commit therefore removes all of them. Add rcu_dereference_all and rcu_dereference_all_check so that library code such as rhashtable can be used with any RCU variant. As it stands rcu_dereference is used within rashtable, which creates false-positive warnings if the user calls it from another RCU context, such as preempt_disable(). Use the rcu_dereference_all and rcu_dereference_all_check calls in rhashtable to suppress these warnings. Also replace the rcu_dereference_raw calls in the list iterators with rcu_dereference_all to uncover buggy calls. migrate_disable() is called to disable migration in the kernel, and it is often used together with rcu_read_lock(). 2025-03-04rcu-tasks: Move RCU Tasks self-tests to core_initcall()Paul E. McKenney1-6/+0
The timer and hrtimer softirq processing has moved to dedicated threads for kernels built with CONFIG_IRQ_FORCED_THREADING=y. This results in timers not expiring until later in early boot, which in turn causes the RCU Tasks self-tests to hang in kernels built with CONFIG_PROVE_RCU=y, which further causes the entire kernel to hang. One fix would be to make timers work during this time, but there are no known users of RCU Tasks grace periods during that time, so no justification for the added complexity. Not yet, anyway. This commit therefore moves the call to rcu_init_tasks_generic() from kernel_init_freeable() to a core_initcall(). This works because the timer and hrtimer kthreads are created at early_initcall() time. Fixes: 49a17639508c3 ("softirq: Use a dedicated thread for timer wakeups on PREEMPT_RT.") 2025-02-05rcu, slab: use a regular callback function for kvfree_rcuVlastimil Babka1-15/+13
RCU has been special-casing callback function pointers that are integers lower than 4096 as offsets of rcu_head for kvfree() instead. The tree RCU implementation no longer does that as the batched kvfree_rcu() is not a simple call_rcu(). The tiny RCU still does, and the plan is also to make tree RCU use call_rcu() for SLUB_TINY configurations. Instead of teaching tree RCU again to special case the offsets, let's remove the special casing completely. Since there's no SLOB anymore, it is possible to create a callback function that can take a pointer to a middle of slab object with unknown offset and determine the object's pointer before freeing it, so implement that as kvfree_rcu_cb(). Large kmalloc and vmalloc allocations are handled simply by aligning down to page size. For that we retain the requirement that the offset is smaller than 4096. But we can remove __is_kvfree_rcu_offset() completely and instead just opencode the condition in the BUILD_BUG_ON() check. 2024-11-27Rename .data.unlikely to .data..unlikelyMasahiro Yamada1-1/+1
Commit 7ccaba5314ca ("consolidate WARN_...ONCE() static variables") was intended to collect all .data.unlikely sections into one chunk. However, this has not worked when CONFIG_LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION or CONFIG_LTO_CLANG is enabled, because .data.unlikely matches the .data.[0-9a-zA-Z_]* pattern in the DATA_MAIN macro. Commit cb87481ee89d ("kbuild: linker script do not match C names unless LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION is configured") was introduced to suppress the issue for the default CONFIG_LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION=n case, providing a minimal fix for stable backporting. We were aware this did not address the issue for CONFIG_LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION=y. The plan was to apply correct fixes and then revert cb87481ee89d. [1] Seven years have passed since then, yet the #ifdef workaround remains in place. Using a ".." separator in the section name fixes the issue for CONFIG_LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION and CONFIG_LTO_CLANG. The race it fixed was subject to conditions that don't exist anymore since: 1612160b9127 ("rcu-tasks: Eliminate deadlocks involving do_exit() and RCU tasks") This latter commit removes the use of SRCU that used to cover the RCU-tasks blind spot on exit between the tasklist's removal and the final preemption disabling. 2024-04-15rcu: Mollify sparse with RCU guardJohannes Berg1-1/+13
When using "guard(rcu)();" sparse will complain, because even though it now understands the cleanup attribute, it doesn't evaluate the calls from it at function exit, and thus doesn't count the context correctly. Given that there's a conditional in the resulting code: static inline void class_rcu_destructor(class_rcu_t *_T) { if (_T->lock) { rcu_read_unlock(); } } it seems that even trying to teach sparse to evalulate the cleanup attribute function it'd still be difficult to really make it understand the full context here. Suppress the sparse warning by just releasing the context in the acquisition part of the function, after all we know it's safe with the guard, that's the whole point of it. 2024-04-15rcu: Remove redundant CONFIG_PROVE_RCU #if conditionPaul E. McKenney1-3/+3
The #if condition controlling the rcu_preempt_sleep_check() definition has a redundant check for CONFIG_PREEMPT_RCU, which is already checked for by an enclosing #ifndef. This commit therefore removes this redundant condition from the inner #if. Signed-off-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Uladzislau Rezki (Sony) <urezki@gmail.com>
2024-04-15rcu: Update lockdep while in RCU read-side critical sectionUladzislau Rezki (Sony)1-1/+1
With Ankur's lazy-/auto-preemption patches applied and with a lazy-preemptible kernel in combination with a non-preemptible RCU, lockdep sometimes complains about context switches within RCU read-side critical sections. This is a false positive due to rcu_read_unlock() updating lockdep state too late: __release(RCU); __rcu_read_unlock(); // Context switch here results in lockdep false positive!!! rcu_lock_release(&rcu_lock_map); /* Keep acq info for rls diags. */ Although this complaint could also happen with preemptible RCU in a preemptible kernel, the odds of that happening aer quite low. In constrast, with non-preemptible RCU, a long critical section has a high probability of performing a context switch from the preempt_enable() in __rcu_read_unlock(). The fix is straightforward, just move the rcu_lock_release() within rcu_read_unlock() to obtain the reverse order from that of rcu_read_lock(): rcu_lock_release(&rcu_lock_map); /* Keep acq info for rls diags. */ __release(RCU); __rcu_read_unlock(); This commit makes this change. 2024-03-20rcu: add a helper to report consolidated flavor QSYan Zhai1-0/+31
When under heavy load, network processing can run CPU-bound for many tens of seconds. Even in preemptible kernels (non-RT kernel), this can block RCU Tasks grace periods, which can cause trace-event removal to take more than a minute, which is unacceptably long. This commit therefore creates a new helper function that passes through both RCU and RCU-Tasks quiescent states every 100 milliseconds. This hard-coded value suffices for current workloads. 2024-02-14rcu-tasks: Repair RCU Tasks Trace quiescence checkPaul E. McKenney1-2/+2
The context-switch-time check for RCU Tasks Trace quiescence expects current->trc_reader_special.b.need_qs to be zero, and if so, updates it to TRC_NEED_QS_CHECKED. This is backwards, because if this value is zero, there is no RCU Tasks Trace grace period in flight, an thus no need for a quiescent state. Instead, when a grace period starts, this field is set to TRC_NEED_QS. This commit therefore changes the check from zero to TRC_NEED_QS. 2023-12-13srcu: Use try-lock lockdep annotation for NMI-safe access.Sebastian Andrzej Siewior1-0/+6
It is claimed that srcu_read_lock_nmisafe() NMI-safe. However it triggers a lockdep if used from NMI because lockdep expects a deadlock since nothing disables NMIs while the lock is acquired. This is because commit f0f44752f5f61 ("rcu: Annotate SRCU's update-side lockdep dependencies") annotates synchronize_srcu() as a write lock usage. This helps to detect a deadlocks such as srcu_read_lock(); synchronize_srcu(); srcu_read_unlock(); The side effect is that the lock srcu_struct now has a USED usage in normal contexts, so it conflicts with a USED_READ usage in NMI. But this shouldn't cause a real deadlock because the write lock usage from synchronize_srcu() is a fake one and only used for read/write deadlock detection. Use a try-lock annotation for srcu_read_lock_nmisafe() to avoid lockdep complains if used from NMI.
