- fix long-standing force-feedback initialization race across the subsystem (Dmitry Torokhov) - switch to system_dfl_wq (Marco Crivellari)
2026-08-14HID: move generic FF initialization into hidinput_connect()Dmitry Torokhov1-1/+1
Generic force-feedback initialization (pidff) currently happens in hid_connect() after hidinput_connect() has already registered the input devices. This is racy as the device is live and visible to userspace before FF support is fully set up. Move the call to hdev->ff_init() into hidinput_connect(), ensuring it runs before input_register_device() is called. This closes the race window for standard PID-capable devices. The initialization now also checks (connect_mask & HID_CONNECT_FF) and !hid_has_ff_input() to avoid conflicts with custom FF implementations and respect driver opt-outs. 2026-08-03HID: input: read battery capacity from its actual report offsetJose Villaseñor Montfort1-0/+2
hidinput_query_battery_capacity() assumes the state-of-charge value is the first byte following the report ID (buf[1]) and ignores where the battery field actually sits within the report. An Apple Magic Trackpad 2 precedes the AbsoluteStateOfCharge byte with a byte of status flags in its battery reports, so this query returns the flags byte instead of the charge level. The device happens to make that easy to observe, because it exposes the same cell twice: its report descriptor declares AbsoluteStateOfCharge in two reports (0x90 and 0x9b), so hidinput_setup_battery() registers two power supplies. Only the first one is refreshed by hid-magicmouse -- it uses hid_get_battery(), which returns the first battery of the list -- and that refresh goes through the report event path, which parses the field correctly. Nothing ever reports the second one, so every read of its capacity takes the query path above. On a USB-C Magic Trackpad over USB, on an unpatched 7.1.5: hid-<serial>-battery-144 = 100% (Charging) <- report event path hid-<serial>-battery-155 = 3% (Discharging) <- query path Both are the same physical battery. A raw HIDIOCGINPUT of the two reports at that same moment: report 0x90 -> [90 03 64] report 0x9b -> [9b 03 64 64 00 00 10 00 00 00 00 00 00 00] ^flags ^SoC = 0x64 = 100% The device answers correctly in both cases; only the offset the kernel reads the capacity from is wrong. 0x03 is the flags byte (present, charging), reported as "3%". Bluetooth takes the same query path for its capacity, where the trackpad reported a bogus near-constant ~4% -- 0b100, the FullyCharged flag -- regardless of the real charge. Store the battery field's offset within the report at setup time and use it when querying, so the capacity is read from its real position. The report event path already parses the field correctly through the HID core; only the explicit GET_REPORT query was wrong. Devices whose capacity field is the first field in the report have a report_offset of 0 and are unaffected (buf[1 + 0] == buf[1]). 2026-07-03Replace <linux/mod_devicetable.h> by more specific <linux/device-id/*.h> ↵Uwe Kleine-König (The Capable Hub)1-1/+1
(headers) <linux/mod_devicetable.h> is included in a many files: $ git grep '<linux/mod_devicetable.h>' ef0c9f75a195 | wc -l 1598 ; some of them are widely used headers. To stop mixing up different and unrelated driver( type)s let the subsystem headers only use the subset of the recently split <linux/mod_devicetable.h> that are relevant for them. The fallout (I hope) is addressed in the previous commits that handle sources relying on e.g. <linux/i2c.h> pulling in the full legacy header and thus providing pci_device_id. hid_input_report() is used in too many places to have a commit that doesn't cross subsystem borders. Instead of changing the API, introduce a new one when things matters in the transport layers: - usbhid - i2chid This effectively revert to the old behavior for those two transport layers. commit 0a3fe972a7cb ("HID: core: Mitigate potential OOB by removing bogus memset()") enforced the provided data to be at least the size of the declared buffer in the report descriptor to prevent a buffer overflow. However, we can try to be smarter by providing both the buffer size and the data size, meaning that hid_report_raw_event() can make better decision whether we should plaining reject the buffer (buffer overflow attempt) or if we can safely memset it to 0 and pass it to the rest of the stack. 2026-03-19HID: input: Add support for multiple batteries per deviceLucas Zampieri1-3/+8
Add support for HID devices that report multiple batteries, each identified by its report ID. The hid_device->battery pointer is replaced with a batteries list. Batteries are named using the pattern hid-{uniq}-battery-{report_id}. The hid_get_battery() helper returns the first battery in the list for backwards compatibility with single-battery drivers. 2026-03-19HID: input: Introduce struct hid_battery and refactor battery codeLucas Zampieri1-13/+39
Introduce struct hid_battery to encapsulate individual battery state, preparing for future multi-battery support. The new structure contains all battery-related fields previously stored directly in hid_device (capacity, min, max, report_type, report_id, charge_status, etc.). The hid_device->battery pointer type changes from struct power_supply* to struct hid_battery*, and all battery functions are refactored accordingly. A hid_get_battery() helper is added for external drivers, with hid-apple.c and hid-magicmouse.c updated to use the new API. The hid-input-test.c KUnit tests are also updated for the new structure. No functional changes for single-battery devices. Signed-off-by: Lucas Zampieri <lcasmz54@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Benjamin Tissoires <bentiss@kernel.org>
2026-03-11HID: input: Add HID_BATTERY_QUIRK_DYNAMIC for Elan touchscreensHans de Goede1-0/+1
Elan touchscreens have a HID-battery device for the stylus which is always there even if there is no stylus. This is causing upower to report an empty battery for the stylus and some desktop-environments will show a notification about this, which is quite annoying. Because of this the HID-battery is being ignored on all Elan I2c and USB touchscreens, but this causes there to be no battery reporting for the stylus at all. This adds a new HID_BATTERY_QUIRK_DYNAMIC and uses these for the Elan touchscreens. This new quirks causes the present value of the battery to start at 0, which will make userspace ignore it and only sets present to 1 after receiving a battery input report which only happens when the stylus gets in range. 2026-03-10HID: Include firmware version in the ueventMario Limonciello1-0/+1
Userspace software fwupd probes some HID devices when the daemon starts up to determine the current firmware version in order to be able to offer updated firmware if the manufacturer has made it available. In order to do this fwupd will detach the existing kernel driver if one is present, send a HID command and then reattach the kernel driver. This can be problematic if the user is using the HID device at the time that fwupd probes the hardware and can cause a few frames of input to be dropped. In some cases HID drivers already have a command to look up the firmware version, and so if that is exported to userspace fwupd can discover it and avoid needing to detach the kernel driver until it's time to update the device. Introduce a new member in the struct hid_device for the version and export a new uevent variable HID_FIRMWARE_VERSION that will display the version that HID drivers obtained. Reviewed-by: Derek J. 2026-02-19HID: Document memory allocation properties of report_fixup()Günther Noack1-0/+6
The memory pointer returned by the report_fixup() hook does not get freed by the caller. Instead, report_fixup() must return (in return value and *rsize) a memory buffer with at least the same lifetime as the input buffer (defined by rdesc and original *rsize). This is usually achieved using one of the following techniques: * Returning a pointer and size to a sub-portion of the input buffer * Returning a pointer to a static buffer * Allocating a buffer with a devm_*() function, which will automatically get freed when the device is removed. 2025-11-26drivers: hid: renegotiate resolution multipliers with device after resetBenedek Kupper1-0/+1
The scroll resolution multipliers are set in the context of hidinput_connect(), which is only called at probe time: when the host changes the value on the device with a SET_REPORT(FEATURE), and the device accepts it, these multipliers are stored on the host side, and used to calculate the final scroll event values sent to userspace. After a USB suspend, the resume operation on many hubs and chipsets involve a USB reset signal as well. A reset on the device side clears all previous state information, including the value of the multiplier report. This reset is not handled by the multiplier handling logic, so what ends up happening is the host is still expecting high-resolution scroll events, but the device is reset to default resolution, making the effective, user-perceived scroll speed incredibly slow. The solution is to renegotiate the multiplier selection after each reset. This is not the only bug related to the high-resolution scrolling implementation in the kernel (the other one is https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=220144), but for this one, there is no device side workaround for, leading to poor user experience with our product: https://github.com/UltimateHackingKeyboard/firmware/issues/1155 https://github.com/UltimateHackingKeyboard/firmware/issues/1261 https://github.com/UltimateHackingKeyboard/firmware/pull/1355 This patch was tested by an affected user and has been reported to fix the issue (see discussion in 1355). 2025-06-20HID: rate-limit hid_warn to prevent log floodingLi Chen1-0/+2
Syzkaller can create many uhid devices that trigger repeated warnings like: "hid-generic xxxx: unknown main item tag 0x0" These messages can flood the system log, especially if a crash occurs (e.g., with a slow UART console, leading to soft lockups). Some USB HID mice have drivers both in HID as well as a separate USB driver. The already existing hid_mouse_ignore_list in hid-quirks manages this, but is not yet configurable by usbhid.quirks, unlike all others like hid_ignore_list. Thus in some HID devices, where the vendor provides USB drivers only for the mouse and lets keyboard handled by the generic hid drivers, presence of such a quirk prevents the user from compiling hid core again to add the device to the table. 2025-03-26Merge branch 'for-6.15/pidff' into for-linusJiri Kosina1-6/+0
From: Tomasz Pakuła <tomasz.pakula.oficjalny@gmail.com> This patch series is focused on improving the compatibility and usability of the hid-pidff force feedback driver. Last patch introduces a new, universal driver for PID devices that need some special handling like report fixups, remapping the button range, managing new pidff quirks and setting desirable fuzz/flat values. This work has been done in the span of the past months with the help of the great Linux simracing community, with a little input from sim flight fans from FFBeast. No changes interfere with compliant and currently working PID devices. "Generic" codepath was tested as well with Moza and Simxperience AccuForce v2. I'm not married to the name. It's what we used previously, but if "universal" is confusing (pidff is already the generic driver), we can come up with something better like "hid-quirky-pidff" :) With v8 and tiny finx in v9, all the outstanding issues were resolved, additional pidff issues were fixed and hid-pidff defines moved to a dedicated header file. This patch series could be considered done bar any comments and requests from input maintainers. I could save more then a dozen lines of code by changing simple if statements to only occupy on line instead of two in there's a need for that.

2024-10-04HID: add per device quirk to force bind to hid-genericBenjamin Tissoires1-0/+2
We already have the possibility to force not binding to hid-generic and rely on a dedicated driver, but we couldn't do the other way around. This is useful for BPF programs where we are fixing the report descriptor and the events, but want to avoid a specialized driver to come after BPF which would unwind everything that is done there. 2024-10-04HID: bpf: move HID-BPF report descriptor fixup earlierBenjamin Tissoires1-8/+10
Currently, hid_bpf_rdesc_fixup() is called once the match between the HID device and the driver is done. This can be problematic in case the driver selected by the kernel would change the report descriptor after the fact. To give a chance for hid_bpf_rdesc_fixup() to provide hints on to how to select a dedicated driver or not, move the call to that BPF hook earlier in the .probe() process, when we get the first match. However, this means that we might get called more than once (typically once for hid-generic, and once for hid-vendor-specific). So we store the result of HID-BPF fixup in struct hid_device. Basically, this means that ->bpf_rdesc can replace ->dev_rdesc when it was used in the code. In order to not grow struct hid_device, some fields are re-ordered. This was the output of pahole for the first 128 bytes: struct hid_device { __u8 * dev_rdesc; /* 0 8 */ unsigned int dev_rsize; /* 8 4 */ /* XXX 4 bytes hole, try to pack */ __u8 * rdesc; /* 16 8 */ unsigned int rsize; /* 24 4 */ /* XXX 4 bytes hole, try to pack */ struct hid_collection * collection; /* 32 8 */ unsigned int collection_size; /* 40 4 */ unsigned int maxcollection; /* 44 4 */ unsigned int maxapplication; /* 48 4 */ __u16 bus; /* 52 2 */ __u16 group; /* 54 2 */ __u32 vendor; /* 56 4 */ __u32 product; /* 60 4 */ /* --- cacheline 1 boundary (64 bytes) --- */ __u32 version; /* 64 4 */ enum hid_type type; /* 68 4 */ unsigned int country; /* 72 4 */ /* XXX 4 bytes hole, try to pack */ struct hid_report_enum report_enum[3]; /* 80 6216 */ Basically, we got three holes of 4 bytes. We can reorder things a little and makes those 3 holes a continuous 12 bytes hole, which can be replaced by the new pointer and the new unsigned int we need. In terms of code allocation, when not using HID-BPF, we are back to kernel v6.2 in hid_open_report(). These multiple kmemdup() calls will be fixed in a later commit. 2024-08-27HID: change return type of report_fixup() to constThomas Weißschuh1-1/+1
By allowing the drivers to return a "const *" they can constify their static report arrays. This makes it clear to driver authors that the HID core will not modify those reports and they can be reused for multiple devices. Furthermore security is slightly improved as those reports are protected against accidental or malicious modifications. 2024-06-27HID: bpf: add HID-BPF hooks for hid_hw_output_reportBenjamin Tissoires1-1/+2
Same story than hid_hw_raw_requests: This allows to intercept and prevent or change the behavior of hid_hw_output_report() from a bpf program. The intent is to solve a couple of use case: - firewalling a HID device: a firewall can monitor who opens the hidraw nodes and then prevent or allow access to write operations on that hidraw node. - change the behavior of a device and emulate a new HID feature request The hook is allowed to be run as sleepable so it can itself call hid_hw_output_report(), which allows to "convert" one feature request into another or even call the feature request on a different HID device on the same physical device. 2024-06-27HID: bpf: prevent infinite recursions with hid_hw_raw_requests hooksBenjamin Tissoires1-1/+1
When we attach a sleepable hook to hid_hw_raw_requests, we can (and in many cases should) call ourself hid_bpf_raw_request(), to actually fetch data from the device itself. However, this means that we might enter an infinite loop between hid_hw_raw_requests hooks and hid_bpf_hw_request() call. To prevent that, if a hid_bpf_hw_request() call is emitted, we prevent any new call of this kfunc by storing the information in the context. This way we can always trace/monitor/filter the incoming bpf requests, while preventing those loops to happen. I don't think exposing "from_bpf" is very interesting because while writing such a bpf program, you need to match at least the report number and/or the source of the call. So a blind "if there is a hid_hw_raw_request() call, I'm emitting another one" makes no real sense.
