60% without impacting scan throughput.

Batching I/O for synchronous swap devices causes performance
regressions and filesystem-based swap suffers from double-indirection

Currently swap to and from file systems goes through two indirect calls
between the swap ops and the swap_rw method. Reduce this by directly
providing the swap_ops from the file system.
For this refactor swap_fs_submit into a swap_fs_prepare_rw helper that
initializes the iov_iter on the callers stack so that file systems can
call it directly, and use that to initialize file system specific ops in
the NFS and SMB clients, which then get passed to swap_fs_activate.

Pull vfs writeback updates from Christian Brauner:
"This makes sync_inode_metadata() and writeback_single_inode() persist
not only the inode but all metadata associated with it.
A new .sync_inode_metadata superblock operation is called from
__writeback_single_inode(). Alongside it a new I_METADATA_WRITEBACK
state flag is added.
Filesystems no longer need their own mmb_fsync() implementations and
can just use simple_fsync(). All metadata is now written for IS_SYNC
and IS_DIRSYNC inodes. Races where several fsyncs raced and mmb_sync()
could return before all buffers were really persisted are fixed since
I_SYNC now serializes properly.
The I_METADATA_WRITEBACK scheme also fixes the case where a
WB_SYNC_NONE writeback landing between write(2) and fsync(2) left
fsync(2) failing to persist the inode. That problem is not specific to
filesystems using the generic metadata bh tracking, and the ones that
do not are left alone.
ext2, udf, bfs, minix, fat and ext4 in nojournal mode have their data
integrity writeout fixed and are converted. affs drops metadata bh
tracking and mmb_fsync() is removed.
A few other fixes came out of this:
- a UAF in mark_buffer_write_io_error()
- missed inode writeback when racing with __writeback_single_inode()
- ext4 allocating the mapping_metadata_bhs struct on demand
- three fat fixes: a lost inode update in do_msdos_rename() with
DIRSYNC, inode buffer write errors not propagating out of
fat_sync_inode_metadata() and directory entries not being
persisted on fsync(2) of the root directory"

Pull vfs superblock updates from Christian Brauner:
- Make it possible to share a block device between multiple
filesystems.
erofs can mount read-only blob devices shared between many
superblocks, but because we only tracked a single superblock a
freeze, thaw, removal or sync on such a device was never propagated
to all the superblocks using it, and there was no way to find them.
Add an efficient table to lookup all superblocks using a given block
device.
- A bunch of pre-existing fixes fell out of this work:
A block-device freeze racing a btrfs device change could leave the
whole filesystem stuck frozen. A bdev_freeze() issued by "dmsetup
suspend" or an LVM snapshot resolves that holder to freeze the
filesystem. and bdev_thaw() resolves it again to thaw. A freeze
landing while btrfs is adding, removing or replacing a device freezes
the filesystem. The membership change then drops that link. So the
matching thaw could no longer find the superblock.
Forbid freezing a device for the duration of a membership change,
modelled on deny_write_access()/allow_write_access().

Pull misc vfs updates from Christian Brauner:
"Bigger cleanups:
- The lockref dead-count handling is tidied up.
The open-coded check for a count below zero as the dead marker
relies on information the caller should not have.
- make put_mnt_ns() leave mounts connected. Destroying a mount
namespace disconnected its mounts from their mount points. So a
file descriptor still open on the parent of a mount point could be
used to peek under it.
Locked mounts were already kept connected to prevent exactly that.
But a mount is only locked when its tree is copied across a user
namespace boundary. So a mount namespace set up by a privileged
component had no locked mounts and its mounts were disconnected.
Passing UMOUNT_CONNECTED keeps every mount connected and prevents
that bug.
- vfs_prepare_mode() passes S_IFDIR for directories. I meant to fix
that ago but didn't get to it. So now someone finally did it.
This kills the exception where the mode could be 0 when a directory
was created whereas every other creation operation passed it
explicitly already.
- move long delayed work for ufs, jffs2, hfsplus, hfs and affs from
the per-cpu system_long_wq to the new unbound system_dfl_long_wq.
None of that work relies on per-cpu state and the work item is
enqueued with queue_delayed_work() whose timer is global anyway. So
it may as well benefit from scheduler task placement.
Smaller fixes and cleanups:
- unlock_buffer() and journal_end_buffer_io_sync() use
clear_and_wake_up_bit()
- the pipe page pools are unified into a single per-pipe pool and the
extra wake_up(rd_wait) is limited to EPOLLET consumers
- eventpoll now computes its timer slack lazily in ep_poll()

The only time that 'false' is passed as the 'excl' arg to the ->create
inode_operation is in lookup_open() when ->atomic_open is not provided
by the parent directory.
*all* directory inode_operations which do not have ->atomic_open
completely ignore the 'excl' arg.
Therefore we don't need the 'excl' arg. Those few ->create operations
which pay attention to the arg are only ever called with a value of
'true'.
We remove that arg and change all ->create operations to behave as those
thhe arg were 'true'.

syzbot reported a KCSAN race between fill_mg_cmtime() and
inode_set_ctime_to_ts() on inode->i_ctime_{sec,nsec}.
stat/getattr can sample inode timestamps while update paths store new
values concurrently, so KCSAN can report benign races on these fields.
Annotate the timestamp accessors with READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE(), and use
the ctime accessor for the remaining ctime loads. This avoids the KCSAN
reports without changing timestamp semantics.

Currently, inode and in general metadata writeback is handled in a lazy
manner. When inode is dirty, __writeback_single_inode() calls
.write_inode method which for lots of filesystems just copies inode
metadata into the underlying block buffer. Writeback of other metadata
associated with the inode (as well as buffers underlying inodes) is
usually handled completely separately and implicitely during writeback
of block device inode. This is good for efficiency of WB_SYNC_NONE
writeback or sync(2). However it becomes problematic for situations
where we want to make sure inode and its metadata is really persistent
on disk. fsync(2) is the most pronounced example of this and thus we
have grown a special file operation and various helper functions to
assist with this task. However fsync(2) is not the only case, For
example directories with DIRSYNC flag need similar functionality and
current use of sync_inode_metadata() for this task in filesystems
generally misses writeout of necessary metadata.
Furthermore even fsync(2) handling as implemented by simple_fsync() or
similar helpers is racy and can fail to properly persist the inode. The
problem is that WB_SYNC_NONE writeback can copy inode metadata into
underlying buffer and clean inode dirty bits. Following fsync(2) will
see inode is clean and will fail to make sure underlying buffer is
written out.
When multiple fsync(2) calls race, there's also another type of race
involving mmb_fsync(). There the problem is buffers already submitted to
the disk are no longer tracked in the mmb list and so racing mmb_sync()
can return before all of the IO completes.
Provide a new inode state bit I_METADATA_WRITEBACK tracking whether
writeback of inode related metadata may be needed for successful data
integrity sync and if this bit is set __writeback_single_inode() for
data integrity writeback will call new superblock operation
.sync_inode_metadata whose task is to make sure all metadata associated
with the inode (including the inode itself) is properly persisted. This
will allow filesystems to address the data integrity issues described
above and at the same time somewhat simplify our fsync implementations.
Issues with racing fsync(2) calls will be addressed by synchronization on
I_SYNC inode state which is set while calling .sync_inode_metadata, issues
with missed inode buffer writeback are fixed by filesystems looking up
corresponding buffer head and writing it out if needed.

Add a helper that drops an inode reference only if the caller does not
hold the last one. Returns true if the reference was dropped, false
otherwise.
This is useful for filesystems that need to release inode references
in contexts where triggering final iput (and thus eviction) would be
unsafe due to lock ordering constraints. The caller can check the
return value and defer the final iput to a safe context.
Unlike iput_not_last() which BUG_ON's if called with the last ref,
this variant is designed to be called speculatively.

Ever since idmapped mounts were introduced, inode ownership checks (for
side-channel protection) in mincore() and madvise(MADV_PAGEOUT) were done
against the nop_mnt_idmap, which completely ignores the file's mount's
idmap. This results in odd edgecases like:
1) mount/bind-mount with an idmap userA:userB:1
2) userB runs an owner_or_capable() check on file that is owned by userA
on-disk/in-memory, but owned by userB after idmap translation
3) owner_or_capable() mysteriously fails as the correct idmap wasn't supplied
In the case of mincore/madvise MADV_PAGEOUT, this is usually benign,
because file_permission(file, MAY_WRITE) will probably succeed, as it uses
the proper idmap internally, but it does not need to be the case on e.g a
0444 file where even the owner itself doesn't have permissions to write to
it.
Since this is clearly not trivial to get right, introduce a
file_owner_or_capable() that can carry the correct semantics, and switch
the various users in mm to it.
The issue was found by manual code inspection & an off-list discussion
with Jan Kara.

blk_mode_t and fop_flags_t are both plain 'unsigned int __bitwise' flag
typedefs, exactly like the gfp_t, slab_flags_t and fmode_t that already
live in <linux/types.h>. Move them there so they are available
everywhere without having to drag in a subsystem header.

filemap_nr_thps*() are removed, the related field, address_space->nr_thps,
is no longer needed. Remove it. This shrinks struct address_space by 8
bytes on 64-bit systems which may increase the number of inodes we can
cache.

- Revamp fs/filesystems.c
The file was a mess with a hand-rolled linked list in desperate need
of a cleanup. The filesystems list is now RCU-ified, /proc files can
be marked permanent from outside fs/proc/, and the string emitted
when reading /proc/filesystems is pre-generated and cached instead of
pointer-chasing and printfing entry by entry on every read.
The file is read frequently because libselinux reads it and is linked
into numerous frequently used programs (even ones you would not
suspect, like sed!). Scalability also improves since reference
maintenance on open/close is bypassed.

A follow-up patch adds missing unlocks in some corner cases and
tidies things up.
- Relax the mount visibility check for subset=pid mounts
When procfs is mounted with subset=pid, all static files become
unavailable and only the dynamic pid information is accessible. In
that case there is no point in imposing the full mount visibility
restrictions on the mounter - everything that can be hidden in procfs
is already inaccessible. These restrictions prevented procfs from
being mounted inside rootless containers since almost all container
implementations overmount parts of procfs to hide certain
directories.
As part of this /proc/self/net is only shown in subset=pid mounts for
CAP_NET_ADMIN, reconfiguring subset=pid is rejected, the
SB_I_USERNS_VISIBLE superblock flag is replaced with an
FS_USERNS_MOUNT_RESTRICTED filesystem flag, fully visible mounts are
recorded in a list, and the mount restrictions are finally
documented.
- Protect ptrace_may_access() with exec_update_lock in procfs
Most uses of ptrace_may_access() in procfs should hold
exec_update_lock to avoid TOCTOU issues with concurrent privileged
execve() (like setuid binary execution).
This fixes the easy cases - the owner and visibility checks and the
FD link permission checks - with the gnarlier ones to follow later.

- Reduce pipe->mutex contention by pre-allocating pages outside the
lock in anon_pipe_write().
anon_pipe_write() called alloc_page() once per page while holding
pipe->mutex. The allocation can sleep doing direct reclaim and runs
memcg charging, which extends the critical section and stalls any
concurrent reader on the same mutex. Now up to 8 pages are
pre-allocated before the mutex is taken, leftovers are recycled
into the per-pipe tmp_page[] cache before unlock, and any remainder
is released after unlock, keeping the allocator out of the critical
section on both sides. On a writers x readers sweep with 64KB
writes against a 1 MB pipe throughput improves 6-28% and average
write latency drops 5-22%; under memory pressure - when the cost of
holding the mutex across reclaim is highest - throughput improves
21-48% and latency drops 17-33%. The microbenchmark is added to
selftests.
- uaccess/sockptr: fix the ignored_trailing logic in
copy_struct_to_user() to behave as documented and the usize check
in copy_struct_from_sockptr() for user pointers, and add
copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer() and copy_struct_to_sockptr()
helpers for upcoming users (IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT, IPPROTO_QUIC).
- bpf: add a sleepable bpf_real_inode() kfunc that resolves the real
inode backing a dentry via d_real_inode(). On overlayfs the inode
attached to the dentry doesn't carry the underlying device
information; this is used by the filesystem restriction BPF program
that was merged into systemd.
- docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems, motivated by
the maintenance burden abandoned and untestable filesystems impose
on VFS developers, blocking infrastructure work like folio
conversions and iomap migration.
Fixes:
- libfs: set SB_I_NOEXEC and SB_I_NODEV by default in init_pseudo()
and drop the now-redundant assignments in callers. This began as a
one-line dma-buf fix for a path_noexec() warning; a pseudo
filesystem has no reason not to set SB_I_NOEXEC. All init_pseudo()
callers were audited: the only visible effect is on dma-buf where
SB_I_NOEXEC silences the warning.
- Handle set_blocksize() failures in legacy filesystems (bfs, hpfs,
qnx4, jfs, befs, affs, isofs, minix, ntfs3, omfs). Mounting a
device with a sector size > PAGE_SIZE crashed roughly half of them;
the rest had the same missing error handling pattern. Plus a
follow-up releasing the superblock buffer_head when setting the
minix v3 block size fails.
- mount: honour SB_NOUSER in the new mount API.
- fs/fcntl: fix a SOFTIRQ-unsafe lock order in fasync signaling by
switching the process-group paths of send_sigio() and send_sigurg()
from read_lock(&tasklist_lock) to RCU, matching the single-PID
path.
- vfs: add an FS_USERNS_DELEGATABLE flag and set it for NFS, fixing
delegated NFS mounts (fsopen() in a container with the mount
performed by a privileged daemon) that broke when non-init
s_user_ns was tied to FS_USERNS_MOUNT.
- selftests/namespaces: fix a hang in nsid_test where an unreaped
grandchild kept the TAP pipe write-end open, a waitpid(-1) race in
listns_efault_test, and a false FAIL on kernels without listns()
where the tests should SKIP.
- filelock: fix the break_lease() stub signature for
CONFIG_FILE_LOCKING=n.
- init/initramfs_test: wait for the async initramfs unpacking before
running; the test and do_populate_rootfs() share the parser state.
- fs/coredump: reduce redundant log noise in
validate_coredump_safety().
- iomap: pass the correct length to fserror_report_io() in
__iomap_write_begin().
- backing-file: fix the backing_file_open() kerneldoc.
Cleanups:
- initramfs: refactor the cpio hex header parsing to use hex2bin()
instead of the hand-rolled simple_strntoul() which is reverted, and
extend the initramfs KUnit tests to cover header fields with 0x
prefixes.
- Replace __get_free_pages() and friends with kmalloc()/kzalloc()

- Fix a race between cgroup_writeback_umount() and inode_switch_wbs()
When a container exits, a race between cgroup_writeback_umount() and
inode_switch_wbs()/cleanup_offline_cgwb() can trigger "VFS: Busy
inodes after unmount" followed by a use-after-free on percpu
counters.
There is a window between inode_prepare_wbs_switch() returning true
(having passed the SB_ACTIVE check and grabbed the inode) and the
subsequent wb_queue_isw() call: if cgroup_writeback_umount() observes
the global isw_nr_in_flight counter as non-zero but flush_workqueue()
finds nothing queued yet, it returns early - leaving a held inode
reference that blocks evict_inodes() and a later iput() that hits
freed percpu counters.
The race is closed by covering the window from
inode_prepare_wbs_switch() through wb_queue_isw() with an RCU
read-side critical section and synchronizing in the umount path.
On top of that the now-dead rcu_barrier() left over from the
queue_rcu_work() era is removed, and the global
synchronize_rcu()/flush_workqueue() pair is replaced with a per-sb
in-flight counter plus pin/unpin/drain helpers so umount no longer
serializes against switch activity on unrelated superblocks.
Under cgroup writeback churn on a 16 vCPU guest this takes umount
latency from ~92-138ms p50 down to ~5-8ms p50 and the cumulative cost
of cgroup_writeback_umount() from ~62ms to ~4us per call.
The initial race fix is kept separate and minimal so it backports
cleanly to stable trees that still queue switches via
queue_rcu_work().
- Improve write performance with RWF_DONTCACHE
Dirty DONTCACHE pages are now tracked per bdi_writeback so that the
writeback flusher can be kicked in a targeted fashion for
IOCB_DONTCACHE writes instead of relying on global writeback, and the
PG_dropbehind flag is preserved when a folio is split.

Commit e1c5ae59c0f2 ("fs: don't allow non-init s_user_ns for filesystems
without FS_USERNS_MOUNT") prevents the mount of any filesystem inside a
container that doesn't have FS_USERNS_MOUNT set.
This broke NFS mounts in our containerized environment. We have a daemon
somewhat like systemd-mountfsd running in the init_ns. A process does a
fsopen() inside the container and passes it to the daemon via unix
socket.
The daemon then vets that the request is for an allowed NFS server and
performs the mount. This now fails because the fc->user_ns is set to the
value in the container and NFS doesn't set FS_USERNS_MOUNT. We don't
want to add FS_USERNS_MOUNT to NFS since that would allow the container
to mount any NFS server (even malicious ones).
Add a new FS_USERNS_DELEGATABLE flag, and enable it on NFS.

The IOCB_DONTCACHE writeback path in generic_write_sync() calls
filemap_flush_range() on every write, submitting writeback inline in
the writer's context. Perf lock contention profiling shows the
performance problem is not lock contention but the writeback submission
work itself — walking the page tree and submitting I/O blocks the writer
for milliseconds, inflating p99.9 latency from 23ms (buffered) to 93ms
(dontcache).
Replace the inline filemap_flush_range() call with a flusher kick that
drains dirty pages in the background. This moves writeback submission
completely off the writer's hot path.
To avoid flushing unrelated buffered dirty data, add a dedicated
WB_start_dontcache bit and wb_check_start_dontcache() handler that uses
the per-wb WB_DONTCACHE_DIRTY counter to determine how many pages to
write back. The flusher writes back that many pages from the oldest dirty
inodes (not restricted to dontcache-specific inodes). This helps
preserve I/O batching while limiting the scope of expedited writeback.
Like WB_start_all, the WB_start_dontcache bit coalesces multiple
DONTCACHE writes into a single flusher wakeup without per-write
allocations. Use test_and_clear_bit to atomically consume the kick
request before reading the dirty counter and starting writeback, so that
concurrent DONTCACHE writes during writeback can re-set the bit and
schedule a follow-up flusher run.
Read the dirty counter with wb_stat_sum() (aggregating per-CPU batches)
rather than wb_stat() (which reads only the global counter) to ensure
small writes below the percpu batch threshold are visible to the flusher.
In filemap_dontcache_kick_writeback(), set the WB_start_dontcache bit
inside the unlocked_inode_to_wb_begin/end section for correct cgroup
writeback domain targeting, but defer the wb_wakeup() call until after
the section ends, since wb_wakeup() uses spin_unlock_irq() which would
unconditionally re-enable interrupts while the i_pages xa_lock may still
be held under irqsave during a cgroup writeback switch. Pin the wb with
wb_get() inside the RCU critical section before calling wb_wakeup()
outside it, since cgroup bdi_writeback structures are RCU-freed and the
wb pointer could become invalid after unlocked_inode_to_wb_end() drops
the RCU read lock.

Previously the buffered writer starved the dontcache writer 2:1.
With per-bdi_writeback tracking, both writers now receive equal
bandwidth. The aggregate matches the buffered-vs-buffered baseline
(863 MB/s), indicating fair sharing regardless of I/O mode.
The dontcache writer's p99.9 latency collapsed from 119 ms to
33 ms (-73%), eliminating the severe periodic stalls seen in the
baseline. Both writers now share identical latency profiles,
matching the buffered-vs-buffered pattern.
The per-bdi_writeback dirty tracking dramatically reduces peak dirty
pages in dontcache workloads, with the 32-file test dropping from
1.8 GB to 213 MB. Dontcache sequential write throughput triples and
multi-writer throughput reaches parity with buffered I/O, with tail
latencies collapsing by 1-2 orders of magnitude.

sget() and sget_fc() have lived side by side as near-duplicate
find-or-create-and-publish helpers for the legacy and fs_context mount
APIs. The three remaining in-tree callers (CIFS plus the ext4 extents
and mballoc KUnit tests) have all been moved to sget_fc(). Nothing
calls sget() anymore.
Delete sget() from fs/super.c and the prototype in <linux/fs.h>.
Update the two comments that referred to "sget()" or "sget{_fc}()" to
just say "sget_fc()".
This removes ~60 lines of code that only existed to be kept in
lockstep with sget_fc() on every superblock publish-path change.

Whether a filesystem's mounts need to undergo a visibility check in user
namespaces is a static property of the filesystem type, not a runtime
property of each superblock instance. Both proc and sysfs always set
SB_I_USERNS_VISIBLE on their superblocks unconditionally (sysfs does so
on first creation, and subsequent mounts reuse the same superblock).
Move this flag from sb->s_iflags (SB_I_USERNS_VISIBLE) to
file_system_type->fs_flags (FS_USERNS_MOUNT_RESTRICTED) so the intent
is expressed at the filesystem type level where it belongs.
All check sites are updated to test sb->s_type->fs_flags instead of
sb->s_iflags. The SB_I_NOEXEC and SB_I_NODEV flags remain on the
superblock as they are runtime properties set during fill_super.

The drivers list was protected by an rwlock; every mount, every open
of /proc/filesystems and the legacy sysfs(2) syscall walked a
hand-rolled singly-linked list under it. /proc/filesystems is
especially hot because libselinux causes programs as mundane as
mkdir, ls and sed to open and read it on every invocation.
Convert the list to an RCU-protected hlist and switch the writer side
to a plain spinlock. Writers keep their existing non-sleeping
section while readers walk under rcu_read_lock() with no lock traffic:
- register_filesystem()/unregister_filesystem() take
file_systems_lock, publish via hlist_{add_tail,del_init}_rcu()
and invalidate the cached /proc/filesystems string.
unregister_filesystem() keeps its synchronize_rcu() after
dropping the lock so in-flight readers are drained before the
module (and its embedded file_system_type) can go away.
- __get_fs_type(), list_bdev_fs_names() and the
fs_index()/fs_name()/fs_maxindex() helpers walk the list under
rcu_read_lock(). fs_name() continues to drop the read-side
lock after try_module_get() and accesses ->name outside the RCU
section; the module reference pins the embedded file_system_type
across the boundary.
struct file_system_type::next becomes struct hlist_node list; no
in-tree caller references the old ->next field outside
fs/filesystems.c.

With this change only 0->1 and 1->0 transitions need the lock.
I verified all places which look at the refcount either only care about
it staying 0 (and have the lock enforce it) or don't hold the inode lock
to begin with (making the above change irrelevant to their correcness or
lack thereof).
I also confirmed nfs and btrfs like to call into these a lot and now
avoid the lock in the common case, shaving off some atomics.

Commit c50ca15dd496 ("mm: add vm_ops->mapped hook") introduced
__vma_check_mmap_hook() in order to assert that a driver doesn't
incorrectly implement both an f_op->mmap() and a vm_ops->mapped hook, the
latter of which would not ultimately get invoked.
However, this did not correctly account for stacked drivers (or drivers
that otherwise use the compatibility layer) which might recursively call
an mmap_prepare hook via the compatibility layer.
Thus the nested mmap_prepare() invocation might result in a VMA which has
vm_ops->mapped set with an overlaying mmap() hook, causing the
__vma_check_mmap_hook() to fail in vfs_mmap(), wrongly failing the
operation.
This patch resolves this by simply removing the check, as we can't be
certain that an mmap() hook doesn't at some point invoke the compatibility
layer, and it's not worth trying to track it.

"We only have five patches in the LSM tree, but three of the five are
for an important bugfix relating to overlayfs and the mmap() and
mprotect() access controls for LSMs. Highlights below:
- Fix problems with the mmap() and mprotect() LSM hooks on overlayfs
As we are dealing with problems both in mmap() and mprotect() there
are essentially two components to this fix, spread across three
patches with all marked for stable.
The simplest portion of the fix is the creation of a new LSM hook,
security_mmap_backing_file(), that is used to enforce LSM mmap()
access controls on backing files in the stacked/overlayfs case. The
existing security_mmap_file() does not have visibility past the
user file. You can see from the associated SELinux hook callback
the code is fairly straightforward.
The mprotect() fix is a bit more complicated as there is no way in
the mprotect() code path to inspect both the user and backing
files, and bolting on a second file reference to vm_area_struct
wasn't really an option.
The solution taken here adds a LSM security blob and associated
hooks to the backing_file struct that LSMs can use to capture and
store relevant information from the user file. While the necessary
SELinux information is relatively small, a single u32, I expect
other LSMs to require more than that, and a dedicated backing_file
LSM blob provides a storage mechanism without negatively impacting
other filesystems.
I want to note that other LSMs beyond SELinux have been involved in
the discussion of the fixes presented here and they are working on
their own related changes using these new hooks, but due to other
issues those patches will be coming at a later date.

While the conversion of mmap hooks to mmap_prepare is underway, we will
encounter situations where mmap hooks need to invoke nested mmap_prepare
hooks.
The nesting of mmap hooks is termed 'stacking'. In order to flexibly
facilitate the conversion of custom mmap hooks in drivers which stack, we
must split up the existing __compat_vma_mmap() function into two separate
functions:
* compat_set_desc_from_vma() - This allows the setting of a vm_area_desc
object's fields to the relevant fields of a VMA.
* __compat_vma_mmap() - Once an mmap_prepare hook has been executed upon a
vm_area_desc object, this function performs any mmap actions specified by
the mmap_prepare hook and then invokes its vm_ops->mapped() hook if any
were specified.
In ordinary cases, where a file's f_op->mmap_prepare() hook simply needs
to be invoked in a stacked mmap() hook, compat_vma_mmap() can be used.
However some drivers define their own nested hooks, which are invoked in
turn by another hook.
A concrete example is vmbus_channel->mmap_ring_buffer(), which is invoked
in turn by bin_attribute->mmap():
vmbus_channel->mmap_ring_buffer() has a signature of:

And so compat_vma_mmap() cannot be used here for incremental conversion of
hooks from mmap() to mmap_prepare().
There are many such instances like this, where conversion to mmap_prepare
would otherwise cascade to a huge change set due to nesting of this kind.
The changes in this patch mean we could now instead convert
vmbus_channel->mmap_ring_buffer() to
vmbus_channel->mmap_prepare_ring_buffer(), and implement something like:

Allowing us to incrementally update this logic, and other logic like it.
Unfortunately, as part of this change, we need to be able to flexibly
assign to the VMA descriptor, so have to remove some of the const
declarations within the structure.
Also update the VMA tests to reflect the changes.

Previously, when a driver needed to do something like establish a
reference count, it could do so in the mmap hook in the knowledge that the
mapping would succeed.
With the introduction of f_op->mmap_prepare this is no longer the case, as
it is invoked prior to actually establishing the mapping.
mmap_prepare is not appropriate for this kind of thing as it is called
before any merge might take place, and after which an error might occur
meaning resources could be leaked.
To take this into account, introduce a new vm_ops->mapped callback which
is invoked when the VMA is first mapped (though notably - not when it is
merged - which is correct and mirrors existing mmap/open/close behaviour).
We do better that vm_ops->open() here, as this callback can return an
error, at which point the VMA will be unmapped.
Note that vm_ops->mapped() is invoked after any mmap action is complete
(such as I/O remapping).
We intentionally do not expose the VMA at this point, exposing only the
fields that could be used, and an output parameter in case the operation
needs to update the vma->vm_private_data field.
In order to deal with stacked filesystems which invoke inner filesystem's
mmap() invocations, add __compat_vma_mapped() and invoke it on vfs_mmap()
(via compat_vma_mmap()) to ensure that the mapped callback is handled when
an mmap() caller invokes a nested filesystem's mmap_prepare() callback.
Update the mmap_prepare documentation to describe the mapped hook and make
it clear what its intended use is.
The vm_ops->mapped() call is handled by the mmap complete logic to ensure
the same code paths are handled by both the compatibility and VMA layers.
Additionally, update VMA userland test headers to reflect the change.

Patch series "mm: expand mmap_prepare functionality and usage", v4.
This series expands the mmap_prepare functionality, which is intended to
replace the deprecated f_op->mmap hook which has been the source of bugs
and security issues for some time.
This series starts with some cleanup of existing mmap_prepare logic, then
adds documentation for the mmap_prepare call to make it easier for
filesystem and driver writers to understand how it works.
It then importantly adds a vm_ops->mapped hook, a key feature that was
missing from mmap_prepare previously - this is invoked when a driver which
specifies mmap_prepare has successfully been mapped but not merged with
another VMA.
mmap_prepare is invoked prior to a merge being attempted, so you cannot
manipulate state such as reference counts as if it were a new mapping.
The vm_ops->mapped hook allows a driver to perform tasks required at this
stage, and provides symmetry against subsequent vm_ops->open,close calls.
The series uses this to correct the afs implementation which wrongly
manipulated reference count at mmap_prepare time.
It then adds an mmap_prepare equivalent of vm_iomap_memory() -
mmap_action_simple_ioremap(), then uses this to update a number of drivers.
It then splits out the mmap_prepare compatibility layer (which allows for
invocation of mmap_prepare hooks in an mmap() hook) in such a way as to
allow for more incremental implementation of mmap_prepare hooks.
It then uses this to extend mmap_prepare usage in drivers.
Finally it adds an mmap_prepare equivalent of vm_map_pages(), which lays
the foundation for future work which will extend mmap_prepare to DMA
coherent mappings.
This patch (of 21):
Rather than passing arbitrary fields, pass a vm_area_desc pointer to mmap
prepare functions to mmap prepare, and an action and vma pointer to mmap
complete in order to put all the action-specific logic in the function
actually doing the work.
Additionally, allow mmap prepare functions to return an error so we can
error out as soon as possible if there is something logically incorrect in
the input.
Update remap_pfn_range_prepare() to properly check the input range for the
CoW case.
Also remove io_remap_pfn_range_complete(), as we can simply set up the
fields correctly in io_remap_pfn_range_prepare() and use
remap_pfn_range_complete() for this.
While we're here, make remap_pfn_range_prepare_vma() a little neater, and
pass mmap_action directly to call_action_complete().
Then, update compat_vma_mmap() to perform its logic directly, as
__compat_vma_map() is not used by anything so we don't need to export it.
Also update compat_vma_mmap() to use vfs_mmap_prepare() rather than
calling the mmap_prepare op directly.
Finally, update the VMA userland tests to reflect the changes.

Stacked filesystems such as overlayfs do not currently provide the
necessary mechanisms for LSMs to properly enforce access controls on the
mmap() and mprotect() operations. In order to resolve this gap, a LSM
security blob is being added to the backing_file struct and the following
new LSM hooks are being created:
security_backing_file_alloc()
security_backing_file_free()
security_mmap_backing_file()
The first two hooks are to manage the lifecycle of the LSM security blob
in the backing_file struct, while the third provides a new mmap() access
control point for the underlying backing file. It is also expected that
LSMs will likely want to update their security_file_mprotect() callback
to address issues with their mprotect() controls, but that does not
require a change to the security_file_mprotect() LSM hook.
There are a three other small changes to support these new LSM hooks:
* Pass the user file associated with a backing file down to
alloc_empty_backing_file() so it can be included in the
security_backing_file_alloc() hook.
* Add getter and setter functions for the backing_file struct LSM blob
as the backing_file struct remains private to fs/file_table.c.
* Constify the file struct field in the LSM common_audit_data struct to
better support LSMs that need to pass a const file struct pointer into
the common LSM audit code.

Instead of tracking metadata bhs for a mapping using i_private_list and
i_private_lock create a dedicated mapping_metadata_bhs struct for it.
So far this struct is embedded in address_space but that will be
switched for per-fs private inode parts later in the series. This also
changes the locking from bdev mapping's i_private_lock to a new lock
embedded in mapping_metadata_bhs to untangle the i_private_lock locking
for maintaining lists of metadata bhs and the locking for looking up /
reclaiming bdev's buffer heads. The locking in remove_assoc_map() gets
more complex due to this but overall this looks like a reasonable
tradeoff.

Remove the following unnecessary forward declarations from fs.h, which
improves maintainability.
- struct hd_geometry: became unused in fs.h when
block_device_operations was moved to blkdev.h in commit 08f858512151
("[PATCH] move block_device_operations to blkdev.h"). The forward
declaration is now added to blkdev.h where it is actually used.
- struct iovec: became unused when aio_read/aio_write were removed in
commit 8436318205b9 ("->aio_read and ->aio_write removed")
- struct iov_iter: duplicate forward declaration. This removes the
redundant second declaration, added in commit 293bc9822fa9
("new methods: ->read_iter() and ->write_iter()")

On 32-bit architectures, unsigned long is only 32 bits wide, which
causes 64-bit inode numbers to be silently truncated. Several
filesystems (NFS, XFS, BTRFS, etc.) can generate inode numbers that
exceed 32 bits, and this truncation can lead to inode number collisions
and other subtle bugs on 32-bit systems.
Change the type of inode->i_ino from unsigned long to u64 to ensure that
inode numbers are always represented as 64-bit values regardless of
architecture. Update all format specifiers treewide from %lu/%lx to
%llu/%llx to match the new type, along with corresponding local variable
types.
This is the bulk treewide conversion. Earlier patches in this series
handled trace events separately to allow trace field reordering for
better struct packing on 32-bit.

Change the inode hash/lookup VFS API functions to accept u64 parameters
instead of unsigned long for inode numbers and hash values. This is
preparation for widening i_ino itself to u64, which will allow
filesystems to store full 64-bit inode numbers on 32-bit architectures.
Since unsigned long implicitly widens to u64 on all architectures, this
change is backward-compatible with all existing callers.

"Features:
- Optimize close_range() from O(range size) to O(active FDs) by using
find_next_bit() on the open_fds bitmap instead of linearly scanning
the entire requested range. This is a significant improvement for
large-range close operations on sparse file descriptor tables.
- Add FS_XFLAG_VERITY file attribute for fs-verity files, retrievable
via FS_IOC_FSGETXATTR and file_getattr(). The flag is read-only.
Add tracepoints for fs-verity enable and verify operations,
replacing the previously removed debug printk's.
- Prevent nfsd from exporting special kernel filesystems like pidfs
and nsfs. These filesystems have custom ->open() and ->permission()
export methods that are designed for open_by_handle_at(2) only and
are incompatible with nfsd. Update the exportfs documentation
accordingly.
Fixes:
- Fix KMSAN uninit-value in ovl_fill_real() where strcmp() was used
on a non-null-terminated decrypted directory entry name from
fscrypt. This triggered on encrypted lower layers when the
decrypted name buffer contained uninitialized tail data.
The fix also adds VFS-level name_is_dot(), name_is_dotdot(), and
name_is_dot_dotdot() helpers, replacing various open-coded "." and
".." checks across the tree.
- Fix read-only fsflags not being reset together with xflags in
vfs_fileattr_set(). Currently harmless since no read-only xflags
overlap with flags, but this would cause inconsistencies for any
future shared read-only flag
- Return -EREMOTE instead of -ESRCH from PIDFD_GET_INFO when the
target process is in a different pid namespace. This lets userspace
distinguish "process exited" from "process in another namespace",
matching glibc's pidfd_getpid() behavior
Cleanups:
- Use C-string literals in the Rust seq_file bindings, replacing the
kernel::c_str!() macro (available since Rust 1.77)
- Fix typo in d_walk_ret enum comment, add porting notes for the
readlink_copy() calling convention change"

fixes, documentation, and a deprecation notice.
Scalability and performance:
- Rework pid allocation to only take pidmap_lock once instead of
twice during alloc_pid(), improving thread creation/teardown
throughput by 10-16% depending on false-sharing luck. Pad the
namespace refcount to reduce false-sharing
- Track file lock presence via a flag in ->i_opflags instead of
reading ->i_flctx, avoiding false-sharing with ->i_readcount on
open/close hot paths. Measured 4-16% improvement on 24-core
open-in-a-loop benchmarks
- Use a consume fence in locks_inode_context() to match the
store-release/load-consume idiom, eliminating a hardware fence on
some architectures
- Annotate cdev_lock with __cacheline_aligned_in_smp to prevent
false-sharing
- Remove a redundant DCACHE_MANAGED_DENTRY check in
__follow_mount_rcu() that never fires since the caller already
verifies it, eliminating a 100% mispredicted branch
- Fix a 100% mispredicted likely() in devcgroup_inode_permission()
that became wrong after a prior code reorder
Bug fixes and correctness:
- Make insert_inode_locked() wait for inode destruction instead of
skipping, fixing a corner case where two matching inodes could
exist in the hash
- Move f_mode initialization before file_ref_init() in alloc_file()
to respect the SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU ordering contract
- Add a WARN_ON_ONCE guard in try_to_free_buffers() for folios with
no buffers attached, preventing a null pointer dereference when
AS_RELEASE_ALWAYS is set but no release_folio op exists
- Fix select restart_block to store end_time as timespec64, avoiding
truncation of tv_sec on 32-bit architectures
- Make dump_inode() use get_kernel_nofault() to safely access inode
and superblock fields, matching the dump_mapping() pattern
API modernization:
- Make posix_acl_to_xattr() allocate the buffer internally since
every single caller was doing it anyway. Reduces boilerplate and
unnecessary error checking across ~15 filesystems
- Replace deprecated simple_strtoul() with kstrtoul() for the
ihash_entries, dhash_entries, mhash_entries, and mphash_entries
boot parameters, adding proper error handling
- Convert chardev code to use guard(mutex) and __free(kfree) cleanup
patterns
- Replace min_t() with min() or umin() in VFS code to avoid silently
truncating unsigned long to unsigned int
- Gate LOOKUP_RCU assertions behind CONFIG_DEBUG_VFS since callers
already check the flag
Deprecation:
- Begin deprecating legacy BSD process accounting (acct(2)). The
interface has numerous footguns and better alternatives exist
