git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/sched_ext
Pull sched_ext updates from Tejun Heo:
"Most of this cycle completes the enqueue-path support for hierarchical
sub-scheduling, which makes sub-scheduler support feature complete: a
root BPF scheduler can now hand a cgroup subtree over to a nested
sub-scheduler together with revocable CPU grants, and the
sub-scheduler owns all scheduling decisions for its tasks on those
CPUs.
Development volume was high and a number of changes plugging holes in
the new support landed late in the cycle. Also included are core
scheduling fixes that were completed too late for the v7.2 release and
are routed through this pull request.
Sub-scheduler CPU delegation:
- Parent schedulers now grant and revoke per-CPU capabilities
(enqueueing, preemption, CPU frequency control) on their children,
enforced on every path a scheduler can reach a CPU through.
Previously only dispatching could be delegated; this lets
sub-schedulers fully schedule their CPUs.
- Rescue execution: a task whose scheduler doesn't have access to the
CPUs the task needs to run on starved until the watchdog ejected
the whole scheduler. The kernel now runs such tasks directly on a
small bandwidth budget, turning a scheduler-killing failure into
bounded degradation.
- Cgroup integration: tasks migrating across a sub-scheduler boundary
weren't re-homed to the new owner, causing wrong-scheduler
scheduling and a use-after-free. Sub-schedulers now take over their
cgroup subtree and receive its cgroup callbacks.
- Arena objects now cross the kernel/BPF boundary as typed pointer
arguments, translated transparently by the BPF tree's new arena
argument support, replacing untyped arguments with manual
translation.
- scx_qmap now demonstrates full hierarchical sub-scheduling.
Other fixes and updates:
- Robustness improvements: the abort path is now NMI-safe, fixing
deadlocks when errors are raised from NMI context and making
hardlockup recovery direct. Reenqueue loops that could monopolize a
CPU ahead of the watchdog now eject the offending scheduler, and
stalls are blamed on the scheduler actually responsible.
- Hardening: BPF-writable arena memory is validated before kernel
use, and task slice and vtime writes got explicit synchronization
rules, closing corruption vectors open to buggy or malicious
schedulers.
- Core scheduling: sched_ext dispatching can drop the rq lock inside
the core-wide pick, which let interleaving selections corrupt each
other's state and hard-hang the machine. The selection now restarts
when the lock was released. The task ordering callback was also
invoked with its arguments swapped, and the default ordering is
updated to work across sub-scheduler boundaries. The fixes are
marked for stable.
- Other fixes headed for stable: a task init leak on fork failure
during enable, tooling compat macros that silently failed to detect
newer kernels, and a crash on reenqueueing against a destroyed
dispatch queue.
- Tooling: scx_pair moves off deprecated callbacks, and the
deprecated scx_bpf_cpu_rq() kfunc is removed"

This helps to find a common subtree of two resources, which is important
when determining whether it's helpful to evict one resource in favor of
another.
To facilitate this, add a common helper to find the ancestor of two
cgroups using each cgroup's ancestor array.

A subsystem can attach to the cgroup hierarchy itself, independent of which
controllers are enabled where - BPF hooks already behave this way and
sched_ext sub-schedulers do too. Controller callbacks can't track task
migrations for them: sched_ext must re-home a task whose migration crosses a
sub-scheduler boundary, but the cpu controller's attach callbacks fire only
when the task_group changes and miss moves whenever the controller topology
is coarser than the sub-scheduler topology.
Add cgroup_task_notifier with per-task migration events mirroring the
can_attach/attach/cancel_attach phases so that a consumer which prepares
per-task state can also veto a migration: CGROUP_TASK_MIGRATING fires
pre-commit, CGROUP_TASK_MIGRATED post-commit and
CGROUP_TASK_MIGRATE_CANCELED unwinds a failed migration. Only migrations
that change a task's dfl cgroup are reported.

task_css_set_check() uses rcu_dereference_check() to verify that
task->cgroups can be dereferenced. One accepted condition is that the
task is already exiting, tested by checking PF_EXITING in task->flags.
This check is only part of the CONFIG_PROVE_RCU lockdep predicate. This
was found by KCSAN during fuzz testing. KCSAN can report a data race
when another task flag bit is updated concurrently. One report shows
pids_release() reading task->flags through task_css_set_check() while
do_task_dead() sets PF_NOFREEZE:
KCSAN: data-race in task_css() [inline]
KCSAN: data-race in pids_release()
task_css()
pids_release()
cgroup_release()
release_task()
wait_task_zombie()
value changed: 0x0040004c -> 0x0040804c
The changed bit is PF_NOFREEZE, not PF_EXITING. PF_EXITING remains set
before and after the update, so the task_css_set_check() condition does
not change. This is not a race on task->cgroups and does not indicate
incorrect pids charging or uncharging.
tools/memory-model/Documentation/access-marking.txt recommends
data_race() for data-racy loads used only for diagnostic purposes. Use
data_race() here to mark the intended diagnostic-only access.
No functional change intended.

Pull cgroup updates from Tejun Heo:
- Last cycle deferred css teardown on cgroup removal until the cgroup
depopulated, so a css is not taken offline while tasks can still
reference it. Disabling a controller through cgroup.subtree_control
still had the same problem. This reworks the deferral from per-cgroup
to per-css so that path is covered too.
- New RDMA controller monitoring files: rdma.peak for per-device peak
usage and rdma.events / rdma.events.local for resource-limit
exhaustion. The max-limit parser was rewritten, fixing two input
parsing bugs.
- cpuset: fix a sched-domain leak on the domain-rebuild failure path
and skip a redundant hardwall ancestor scan on v2.
- Misc: pair the remaining lockless cgroup.max.* reads with WRITE_ONCE,
assorted selftest robustness fixes, and doc path corrections.

css_rstat_updated() is exposed as a BPF kfunc and accepts a
caller-provided cpu argument. The function uses cpu for per-cpu rstat
lookups without checking whether it refers to a valid possible CPU.
A BPF iter/cgroup program with CAP_BPF and CAP_PERFMON can pass an
invalid cpu value. On an unfixed UBSCAN_BOUNDS test kernel, cpu ==

Later patches replace the cgroup-level finish_destroy_work deferral added
by 93618edf7538 ("cgroup: Defer css percpu_ref kill on rmdir until cgroup
is depopulated") with a per-subsys-css deferral. That needs each subsystem
css to track its own populated count. Move the populated counters from
cgroup onto cgroup_subsys_state. cgroup->self is itself a
cgroup_subsys_state and self.parent walks the same chain as cgroup_parent(),
so cgroup_update_populated() generalizes to a single css_update_populated()
taking a css. The cgroup-side bookkeeping runs only when the walk started
from a self css.
Keep nr_populated_{domain,threaded}_children on cgroup. Both sum to
self.nr_populated_children, but staying as dedicated fields to allow readers
like cgroup_can_be_thread_root() unlocked access.
css_set_update_populated() also walks the per-subsys-css chain so each
subsystem css's hierarchical populated count is maintained. No reader
consumes those counts yet.

cgroup_update_populated() updates nr_populated_csets,
nr_populated_domain_children, and nr_populated_threaded_children under

cgroup_can_be_thread_root() read them without holding it. Use

cpuset reads cs->css.cgroup->nr_populated_csets directly in two places to
test whether a cgroup has tasks. cgroup.c already has a matching helper,
cgroup_has_tasks(). Move it to cgroup.h as static inline and use that
instead. This is to prepare for relocation of cgroup->nr_populated_csets. No
semantic change.

a72f73c4dd9b ("cgroup: Don't expose dead tasks in cgroup") made
css_task_iter_advance() skip exiting tasks so cgroup.procs stays consistent
with waitpid() visibility. Unfortunately, this broke scx_task_iter.
scx_task_iter walks either scx_tasks (global) or a cgroup subtree via
css_task_iter() and the two modes are expected to cover the same set of
tasks. After the above change the cgroup-scoped mode silently skips tasks
past exit_signals() that are still on scx_tasks.
scx_sub_enable_workfn()'s abort path is one of the symptoms: an exiting
SCX_TASK_SUB_INIT task can race past the cgroup iter leaking
__scx_init_task() state. Other iterations share the same gap.
Add CSS_TASK_ITER_WITH_DEAD to opt out of the skip and use it from
scx_task_iter().

Expose the following through cgroup.h:
- cgroup_on_dfl()
- cgroup_is_dead()
- cgroup_for_each_live_child()
- cgroup_for_each_live_descendant_pre()
- cgroup_for_each_live_descendant_post()
Until now, these didn't need to be exposed because controllers only cared
about the css hierarchy. The planned sched_ext hierarchical scheduler
support will be based on the default cgroup hierarchy, which is in line
with the existing BPF cgroup support, and thus needs these exposed.

When a task exits, css_set_move_task(tsk, cset, NULL, false) unlinks the task
from its cgroup. From the cgroup's perspective, the task is now gone. If this
makes the cgroup empty, it can be removed, triggering ->css_offline() callbacks
that notify controllers the cgroup is going offline resource-wise.
However, the exiting task can still run, perform memory operations, and schedule
until the final context switch in finish_task_switch(). This creates a confusing
situation where controllers are told a cgroup is offline while resource
activities are still happening in it. While this hasn't broken existing
controllers, it has caused direct confusion for sched_ext schedulers.
Split cgroup_task_exit() into two functions. cgroup_task_exit() now only calls
the subsystem exit callbacks and continues to be called from do_exit(). The
css_set cleanup is moved to the new cgroup_task_dead() which is called from
finish_task_switch() after the final context switch, so that the cgroup only
appears empty after the task is truly done running.
This also reorders operations so that subsys->exit() is now called before
unlinking from the cgroup, which shouldn't break anything.

The current names cgroup_exit(), cgroup_release(), and cgroup_free() are
confusing because they look like they're operating on cgroups themselves when
they're actually task lifecycle hooks. For example, cgroup_init() initializes
the cgroup subsystem while cgroup_exit() is a task exit notification to
cgroup. Rename them to cgroup_task_exit(), cgroup_task_release(), and
cgroup_task_free() to make it clear that these operate on tasks.

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs
Pull namespace updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains a larger set of changes around the generic namespace
infrastructure of the kernel.
Each specific namespace type (net, cgroup, mnt, ...) embedds a struct
ns_common which carries the reference count of the namespace and so
on.
We open-coded and cargo-culted so many quirks for each namespace type
that it just wasn't scalable anymore. So given there's a bunch of new
changes coming in that area I've started cleaning all of this up.
The core change is to make it possible to correctly initialize every
namespace uniformly and derive the correct initialization settings
from the type of the namespace such as namespace operations, namespace
type and so on. This leaves the new ns_common_init() function with a
single parameter which is the specific namespace type which derives
the correct parameters statically. This also means the compiler will
yell as soon as someone does something remotely fishy.
The ns_common_init() addition also allows us to remove ns_alloc_inum()
and drops any special-casing of the initial network namespace in the
network namespace initialization code that Linus complained about.
Another part is reworking the reference counting. The reference
counting was open-coded and copy-pasted for each namespace type even
though they all followed the same rules. This also removes all open
accesses to the reference count and makes it private and only uses a
very small set of dedicated helpers to manipulate them just like we do
for e.g., files.
In addition this generalizes the mount namespace iteration
infrastructure introduced a few cycles ago. As reminder, the vfs makes
it possible to iterate sequentially and bidirectionally through all
mount namespaces on the system or all mount namespaces that the caller
holds privilege over. This allow userspace to iterate over all mounts
in all mount namespaces using the listmount() and statmount() system
call.
Each mount namespace has a unique identifier for the lifetime of the
systems that is exposed to userspace. The network namespace also has a
unique identifier working exactly the same way. This extends the
concept to all other namespace types.
The new nstree type makes it possible to lookup namespaces purely by
their identifier and to walk the namespace list sequentially and
bidirectionally for all namespace types, allowing userspace to iterate
through all namespaces. Looking up namespaces in the namespace tree
works completely locklessly.
This also means we can move the mount namespace onto the generic
infrastructure and remove a bunch of code and members from struct
mnt_namespace itself.
There's a bunch of stuff coming on top of this in the future but for
now this uses the generic namespace tree to extend a concept
introduced first for pidfs a few cycles ago. For a while now we have
supported pidfs file handles for pidfds. This has proven to be very
useful.
This extends the concept to cover namespaces as well. It is possible
to encode and decode namespace file handles using the common
name_to_handle_at() and open_by_handle_at() apis.
As with pidfs file handles, namespace file handles are exhaustive,
meaning it is not required to actually hold a reference to nsfs in
able to decode aka open_by_handle_at() a namespace file handle.
Instead the FD_NSFS_ROOT constant can be passed which will let the
kernel grab a reference to the root of nsfs internally and thus decode
the file handle.
Namespaces file descriptors can already be derived from pidfds which
means they aren't subject to overmount protection bugs. IOW, it's
irrelevant if the caller would not have access to an appropriate
/proc/<pid>/ns/ directory as they could always just derive the
namespace based on a pidfd already.
It has the same advantage as pidfds. It's possible to reliably and for
the lifetime of the system refer to a namespace without pinning any
resources and to compare them trivially.
Permission checking is kept simple. If the caller is located in the
namespace the file handle refers to they are able to open it otherwise
they must hold privilege over the owning namespace of the relevant
namespace.
The namespace file handle layout is exposed as uapi and has a stable
and extensible format. For now it simply contains the namespace
identifier, the namespace type, and the inode number. The stable
format means that userspace may construct its own namespace file
handles without going through name_to_handle_at() as they are already
allowed for pidfs and cgroup file handles"

The bpf_cgroup_from_id kfunc relies on cgroup_get_from_id to obtain the
cgroup corresponding to a given cgroup ID. This helper can be called in
a lot of contexts where the current thread can be random. A recent
example was its use in sched_ext's ops.tick(), to obtain the root cgroup
pointer. Since the current task can be whatever random user space task
preempted by the timer tick, this makes the behavior of the helper
unreliable.
Refactor out __cgroup_get_from_id as the non-namespace aware version of
cgroup_get_from_id, and change bpf_cgroup_from_id to make use of it.
There is no compatibility breakage here, since changing the namespace
against which the lookup is being done to the root cgroup namespace only
permits a wider set of lookups to succeed now. The cgroup IDs across
namespaces are globally unique, and thus don't need to be retranslated.

With the introduction of clone3 in commit 7f192e3cd316 ("fork: add
clone3") the effective bit width of clone_flags on all architectures was
increased from 32-bit to 64-bit, with a new type of u64 for the flags.
However, for most consumers of clone_flags the interface was not
changed from the previous type of unsigned long.
While this works fine as long as none of the new 64-bit flag bits
(CLONE_CLEAR_SIGHAND and CLONE_INTO_CGROUP) are evaluated, this is still
undesirable in terms of the principle of least surprise.
Thus, this commit fixes all relevant interfaces of callees to
sys_clone3/copy_process (excluding the architecture-specific
copy_thread) to consistently pass clone_flags as u64, so that
no truncation to 32-bit integers occurs on 32-bit architectures.

The CS_ONLINE flag was introduced prior to the CSS_ONLINE flag in the
cpuset subsystem. Currently, the flag setting sequence is as follows:
1. cpuset_css_online() sets CS_ONLINE
2. css->flags gets CSS_ONLINE set
...
3. cgroup->kill_css sets CSS_DYING
4. cpuset_css_offline() clears CS_ONLINE
5. css->flags clears CSS_ONLINE
The is_cpuset_online() check currently occurs between steps 1 and 3.
However, it would be equally safe to perform this check between steps 2
and 3, as CSS_ONLINE provides the same synchronization guarantee as
CS_ONLINE.
Since CS_ONLINE is redundant with CSS_ONLINE and provides no additional
synchronization benefits, we can safely remove it to simplify the code.

Pull cgroup updates from Tejun Heo:
- cgroup rstat shared the tracking tree across all controllers with the
rationale being that a cgroup which is using one resource is likely
to be using other resources at the same time (ie. if something is
allocating memory, it's probably consuming CPU cycles).
However, this turned out to not scale very well especially with memcg
using rstat for internal operations which made memcg stat read and
flush patterns substantially different from other controllers. JP
Kobryn split the rstat tree per controller.
- cgroup BPF support was hooking into cgroup init/exit paths directly.
Convert them to use a notifier chain instead so that other usages can
be added easily. The two of the patches which implement this are
mislabeled as belonging to sched_ext instead of cgroup. Sorry.

Pull misc vfs updates from Christian Brauner:
"This contains the usual selections of misc updates for this cycle.
Features:
- Use folios for symlinks in the page cache
FUSE already uses folios for its symlinks. Mirror that conversion
in the generic code and the NFS code. That lets us get rid of a few
folio->page->folio conversions in this path, and some of the few
remaining users of read_cache_page() / read_mapping_page()
- Try and make a few filesystem operations killable on the VFS
inode->i_mutex level
- Add sysctl vfs_cache_pressure_denom for bulk file operations
Some workloads need to preserve more dentries than we currently
allow through out sysctl interface
A HDFS servers with 12 HDDs per server, on a HDFS datanode startup
involves scanning all files and caching their metadata (including
dentries and inodes) in memory. Each HDD contains approximately 2
million files, resulting in a total of ~20 million cached dentries
after initialization
To minimize dentry reclamation, they set vfs_cache_pressure to 1.
Despite this configuration, memory pressure conditions can still
trigger reclamation of up to 50% of cached dentries, reducing the
cache from 20 million to approximately 10 million entries. During
the subsequent cache rebuild period, any HDFS datanode restart
operation incurs substantial latency penalties until full cache
recovery completes
To maintain service stability, more dentries need to be preserved
during memory reclamation. The current minimum reclaim ratio (1/100
of total dentries) remains too aggressive for such workload. This
patch introduces vfs_cache_pressure_denom for more granular cache
pressure control
The configuration [vfs_cache_pressure=1,
vfs_cache_pressure_denom=10000] effectively maintains the full 20
million dentry cache under memory pressure, preventing datanode
restart performance degradation
- Avoid some jumps in inode_permission() using likely()/unlikely()
- Avid a memory access which is most likely a cache miss when
descending into devcgroup_inode_permission()
- Add fastpath predicts for stat() and fdput()
- Anonymous inodes currently don't come with a proper mode causing
issues in the kernel when we want to add useful VFS debug assert.
Fix that by giving them a proper mode and masking it off when we
report it to userspace which relies on them not having any mode
- Anonymous inodes currently allow to change inode attributes because
the VFS falls back to simple_setattr() if i_op->setattr isn't
implemented. This means the ownership and mode for every single
user of anon_inode_inode can be changed. Block that as it's either
useless or actively harmful. If specific ownership is needed the
respective subsystem should allocate anonymous inodes from their
own private superblock
- Raise SB_I_NODEV and SB_I_NOEXEC on the anonymous inode superblock
- Add proper tests for anonymous inode behavior
- Make it easy to detect proper anonymous inodes and to ensure that
we can detect them in codepaths such as readahead()

This non-functional change serves as preparation for moving to
subsystem-based rstat trees. To simplify future commits, change the
signatures of existing cgroup-based rstat functions to become css-based and
rename them to reflect that.
Though the signatures have changed, the implementations have not. Within
these functions use the css->cgroup pointer to obtain the associated cgroup
and allow code to function the same just as it did before this patch. At
applicable call sites, pass the subsystem-specific css pointer as an
argument or pass a pointer to cgroup::self if not in subsystem context.
Note that cgroup_rstat_updated_list() and cgroup_rstat_push_children()
are not altered yet since there would be a larger amount of css to
cgroup conversions which may overcomplicate the code at this
intermediate phase.

There is a possible race between removing a cgroup diectory that is
a partition root and the creation of a new partition. The partition
to be removed can be dying but still online, it doesn't not currently
participate in checking for exclusive CPUs conflict, but the exclusive
CPUs are still there in subpartitions_cpus and isolated_cpus. These
two cpumasks are global states that affect the operation of cpuset
partitions. The exclusive CPUs in dying cpusets will only be removed
when cpuset_css_offline() function is called after an RCU delay.
As a result, it is possible that a new partition can be created with
exclusive CPUs that overlap with those of a dying one. When that dying
partition is finally offlined, it removes those overlapping exclusive
CPUs from subpartitions_cpus and maybe isolated_cpus resulting in an
incorrect CPU configuration.
This bug was found when a warning was triggered in
remote_partition_disable() during testing because the subpartitions_cpus
mask was empty.
One possible way to fix this is to iterate the dying cpusets as well and
avoid using the exclusive CPUs in those dying cpusets. However, this
can still cause random partition creation failures or other anomalies
due to racing. A better way to fix this race is to reset the partition
state at the moment when a cpuset is being killed.
Introduce a new css_killed() CSS function pointer and call it, if
defined, before setting CSS_DYING flag in kill_css(). Also update the
css_is_dying() helper to use the CSS_DYING flag introduced by commit
33c35aa48178 ("cgroup: Prevent kill_css() from being called more than
once") for proper synchronization.

Now that the rstat lock is being re-acquired on every CPU iteration in
cgroup_rstat_flush_locked(), having the initially acquire the lock is
unnecessary and unclear.
Inline cgroup_rstat_flush_locked() into cgroup_rstat_flush() and move
the lock/unlock calls to the beginning and ending of the loop body to
make the critical section obvious.
cgroup_rstat_flush_hold/release() do not make much sense with the lock
being dropped and reacquired internally. Since it has no external
callers, remove it and explicitly acquire the lock in

Patch series "mm, memcg: cg2 memory{.swap,}.peak write handlers", v7.
This patch (of 2):
Other mechanisms for querying the peak memory usage of either a process or
v1 memory cgroup allow for resetting the high watermark. Restore parity
with those mechanisms, but with a less racy API.
For example:
- Any write to memory.max_usage_in_bytes in a cgroup v1 mount resets
the high watermark.
- writing "5" to the clear_refs pseudo-file in a processes's proc
directory resets the peak RSS.
This change is an evolution of a previous patch, which mostly copied the
cgroup v1 behavior, however, there were concerns about races/ownership
issues with a global reset, so instead this change makes the reset
filedescriptor-local.
Writing any non-empty string to the memory.peak and memory.swap.peak
pseudo-files reset the high watermark to the current usage for subsequent
reads through that same FD.
Notably, following Johannes's suggestion, this implementation moves the
O(FDs that have written) behavior onto the FD write(2) path. Instead, on
the page-allocation path, we simply add one additional watermark to
conditionally bump per-hierarchy level in the page-counter.
Additionally, this takes Longman's suggestion of nesting the
page-charging-path checks for the two watermarks to reduce the number of
common-case comparisons.
This behavior is particularly useful for work scheduling systems that need
to track memory usage of worker processes/cgroups per-work-item. Since
memory can't be squeezed like CPU can (the OOM-killer has opinions), these
systems need to track the peak memory usage to compute system/container
fullness when binpacking workitems.
Most notably, Vimeo's use-case involves a system that's doing global
binpacking across many Kubernetes pods/containers, and while we can use
PSI for some local decisions about overload, we strive to avoid packing
workloads too tightly in the first place. To facilitate this, we track
the peak memory usage. However, since we run with long-lived workers (to
amortize startup costs) we need a way to track the high watermark while a
work-item is executing. Polling runs the risk of missing short spikes
that last for timescales below the polling interval, and peak memory
tracking at the cgroup level is otherwise perfect for this use-case.
As this data is used to ensure that binpacked work ends up with sufficient
headroom, this use-case mostly avoids the inaccuracies surrounding
reclaimable memory.

Factor out sched_weight_from/to_cgroup() which convert between scheduler
shares and cgroup weight. No functional change. The factored out functions
will be used by a new BPF extensible sched_class so that the weights can be
exposed to the BPF programs in a way which is consistent cgroup weights and
easier to interpret.
The weight conversions will be used regardless of cgroup usage. It's just
borrowing the cgroup weight range as it's more intuitive.
CGROUP_WEIGHT_MIN/DFL/MAX constants are moved outside CONFIG_CGROUPS so that
the conversion helpers can always be defined.
v2: The helpers are now defined regardless of COFNIG_CGROUPS.

This commit enhances the ability to troubleshoot the global
cgroup_rstat_lock by introducing wrapper helper functions for the lock
along with associated tracepoints.
Although global, the cgroup_rstat_lock helper APIs and tracepoints take
arguments such as cgroup pointer and cpu_in_loop variable. This
adjustment is made because flushing occurs per cgroup despite the lock
being global. Hence, when troubleshooting, it's important to identify the
relevant cgroup. The cpu_in_loop variable is necessary because the global
lock may be released within the main flushing loop that traverses CPUs.
In the tracepoints, the cpu_in_loop value is set to -1 when acquiring the
main lock; otherwise, it denotes the CPU number processed last.
The new feature in this patchset is detecting when lock is contended. The
tracepoints are implemented with production in mind. For minimum overhead
attach to cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended, which only gets activated
when trylock detects lock is contended. A quick production check for
issues could be done via this perf commands:
perf record -g -e cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended
Next natural question would be asking how long time do lock contenders
wait for obtaining the lock. This can be answered by measuring the time
between cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended and cgroup:cgroup_rstat_locked
when args->contended is set. Like this bpftrace script:
bpftrace -e '
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended {@start[tid]=nsecs}
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_locked {
if (args->contended) {
@wait_ns=hist(nsecs-@start[tid]); delete(@start[tid]);}}
interval:s:1 {time("%H:%M:%S "); print(@wait_ns); }'
Extending with time spend holding the lock will be more expensive as this
also looks at all the non-contended cases.
Like this bpftrace script:
bpftrace -e '
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_lock_contended {@start[tid]=nsecs}
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_locked { @locked[tid]=nsecs;
if (args->contended) {
@wait_ns=hist(nsecs-@start[tid]); delete(@start[tid]);}}
tracepoint:cgroup:cgroup_rstat_unlock {
@locked_ns=hist(nsecs-@locked[tid]); delete(@locked[tid]);}
interval:s:1 {time("%H:%M:%S "); print(@wait_ns);print(@locked_ns); }'

A new helper is added for cgroup1 hierarchy:
- task_get_cgroup1
Acquires the associated cgroup of a task within a specific cgroup1
hierarchy. The cgroup1 hierarchy is identified by its hierarchy ID.
This helper function is added to facilitate the tracing of tasks within
a particular container or cgroup dir in BPF programs. It's important to
note that this helper is designed specifically for cgroup1 only.

This patch makes some preparations for using css_task_iter_*() in BPF
Program.
1. Flags CSS_TASK_ITER_* are #define-s and it's not easy for bpf prog to
use them. Convert them to enum so bpf prog can take them from vmlinux.h.
2. In the next patch we will add css_task_iter_*() in common kfuncs which
is not safe. Since css_task_iter_*() does spin_unlock_irq() which might
screw up irq flags depending on the context where bpf prog is running.
So we should use irqsave/irqrestore here and the switching is harmless.

Patch series "memcg: avoid flushing stats atomically where possible", v3.
rstat flushing is an expensive operation that scales with the number of
cpus and the number of cgroups in the system. The purpose of this series
is to minimize the contexts where we flush stats atomically.
Patches 1 and 2 are cleanups requested during reviews of prior versions of
this series.
Patch 3 makes sure we never try to flush from within an irq context.
Patches 4 to 7 introduce separate variants of mem_cgroup_flush_stats() for
atomic and non-atomic flushing, and make sure we only flush the stats
atomically when necessary.
Patch 8 is a slightly tangential optimization that limits the work done by
rstat flushing in some scenarios.
This patch (of 8):
cgroup_rstat_flush_irqsafe() can be a confusing name. It may read as
"irqs are disabled throughout", which is what the current implementation
does (currently under discussion [1]), but is not the intention. The
intention is that this function is safe to call from atomic contexts.
Name it as such.

memcg_write_event_control() accesses the dentry->d_name of the specified
control fd to route the write call. As a cgroup interface file can't be
renamed, it's safe to access d_name as long as the specified file is a
regular cgroup file. Also, as these cgroup interface files can't be
removed before the directory, it's safe to access the parent too.
Prior to 347c4a874710 ("memcg: remove cgroup_event->cft"), there was a
call to __file_cft() which verified that the specified file is a regular
cgroupfs file before further accesses. The cftype pointer returned from
__file_cft() was no longer necessary and the commit inadvertently
dropped the file type check with it allowing any file to slip through.
With the invarients broken, the d_name and parent accesses can now race
against renames and removals of arbitrary files and cause
use-after-free's.
Fix the bug by resurrecting the file type check in __file_cft(). Now
that cgroupfs is implemented through kernfs, checking the file
operations needs to go through a layer of indirection. Instead, let's
check the superblock and dentry type.
