2026-06-05setup: drop `setup_git_env()`Patrick Steinhardt1-6/+1
The `setup_git_env()` function is a trivial wrapper around `setup_git_env_internal()` and has a single call site only. Drop the function. While at it, drop stale documentation in "environment.h" that points to this function, even though it hasn't been exposed to callers outside of "setup.c" since 43ad1047a9 (setup: stop using `the_repository` in `setup_git_env()`, 2026-03-27) anymore. 2026-05-19setup: stop using `the_repository` in `setup_work_tree()`Patrick Steinhardt1-11/+4
Stop using `the_repository` in `setup_work_tree()` and instead accept the repository as a parameter. The injection of `the_repository` is thus bumped one level higher, where callers now pass it in explicitly. Note that the function tracks two bits of information via global variables. This of course doesn't make much sense anymore now that we can set up worktrees for arbitrary repositories: - We track whether the worktree has already been initialized and, if so, we skip the call to `chdir_notify()` and setenv(3p). It does not make much sense to store this info in the repository, as we _would_ want to update the environment when switching between worktrees back and forth. So instead of storing this info in the repository, we drop this state entirely and live with the fact that we may execute the logic twice. It should ultimately be idempotent though and thus not be much of a problem. - We track whether the worktree configuration is bogus. If so, and if later on some caller tries to setup the worktree, then we'll die instead. This is indeed information that we can move into the repository itself. 2026-05-19setup: stop using `the_repository` in `is_inside_work_tree()`Patrick Steinhardt1-11/+14
Similar as with the preceding commit, `is_inside_work_tree()` determines whether the current working directory is located inside the worktree of `the_repository`. Perform the same refactoring by dropping the caching mechanism and injecting the repository that shall be checked. Note that, same as in the preceding commit, we're also resolving the worktree path via `realpath()`. In theory this step is not necessary as we always set the worktree path via `repo_set_worktree()`, and that function already resolves the path for us. But resolving the path a second time is unlikely to matter performance-wise, and it feels fragile to rely on the repository's worktree path being absolute. We thus perform the same extra step even though it's ultimately not required. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
2026-05-19setup: stop using `the_repository` in `is_inside_git_dir()`Patrick Steinhardt1-8/+6
The function `is_inside_git_dir()` verifies whether or not the current working directory is located inside the gitdir of `the_repository`. This is done by taking the gitdir path and verifying that it's a prefix of the current working directory. This information is cached so that we don't have to re-do this change multiple times. Furthermore, we proactively set the value in multiple locations so that we don't even have to perform the check when we have discovered the repository. While we could simply move the caching variable into the repository, the current layout doesn't really feel sensible in the first place: - It can easily lead to false positives or negatives if at any point in time we may switch the current working directory. - We don't call the function in a hot loop, and neither is it overly expensive to compute. Drop the caching infrastructure and instead compute the property ad-hoc via an injected repository. Note that there is one small gotcha: we often end up with relative gitdir paths, and if so `is_inside_dir()` might fail. This wasn't an issue before because of how we proactively set the cached value during repository discovery. Now that we stop doing that it becomes a problem though, which we work around by resolving the gitdir via `realpath()`. Replace the use of `the_repository` in "setup.c" for all static functions. For now, we simply add `the_repository` to invocations of these functions. 2026-05-13builtin/maintenance: fix locking with "--detach"Patrick Steinhardt1-1/+15
When running git-maintenance(1), we create a lockfile that is supposed to keep other maintenance processes from running at the same time. This lockfile is broken though in case the "--detach" flag is passed: the lockfile is created by the parent process and will be cleaned up either manually or on exit. But when detaching, the parent will exit before all of the background maintenance tasks have been run, and consequently the lock only covers a smaller part of the whole maintenance process. Fix this bug by reassigning all tempfiles from the parent process to the child process when daemonizing so that it becomes the responsibility of the child to clean them up. Note that this is a broader fix, as we now always reassign tempfiles when daemonizing. This is a natural consequence of the semantics of `daemonize()` though, as it essentially promises to continue running the current process in the background. It is thus sensible to have that function perform the whole dance of assigning resources to the child process, including tempfiles. There's only a single other caller in "daemon.c", but that process doesn't create any tempfiles before the call to `daemonize()` and is thus not impacted by this change. 2026-04-27safe.bareRepository: default to "explicit" with WITH_BREAKING_CHANGESJohannes Schindelin1-0/+4
When an attacker can convince a user to clone a crafted repository that contains an embedded bare repository with malicious hooks, any Git command the user runs after entering that subdirectory will discover the bare repository and execute the hooks. The user does not even need to run a Git command explicitly: many shell prompts run `git status` in the background to display branch and dirty state information, and `git status` in turn may invoke the fsmonitor hook if so configured, making the user vulnerable the moment they `cd` into the directory. The `safe.bareRepository` configuration variable (introduced in 8959555cee7e (setup_git_directory(): add an owner check for the top-level directory, 2022-03-02)) already provides protection against this attack vector by allowing users to set it to "explicit", but the default remained "all" for backwards compatibility. Since Git 3.0 is the natural point to change defaults to safer values, flip the default from "all" to "explicit" when built with `WITH_BREAKING_CHANGES`. This means Git will refuse to work with bare repositories that are discovered implicitly by walking up the directory tree. Bare repositories specified via `--git-dir` or `GIT_DIR` continue to work, and directories that look like `.git`, worktrees, or submodule directories are unaffected (the existing `is_implicit_bare_repo()` whitelist handles those cases). Users who rely on implicit bare repository discovery can restore the previous behavior by setting `safe.bareRepository=all` in their global or system configuration. The test for the "safe.bareRepository in the repository" scenario needed a more involved fix: it writes a `safe.bareRepository=all` entry into the bare repository's own config to verify that repo-local config does not override the protected (global) setting. Previously, `test_config -C` was used to write that entry, but its cleanup runs `git -C <bare-repo> config --unset`, which itself fails when the default is "explicit" and the global config has already been cleaned up. Switching to direct git config --file access avoids going through repository discovery entirely. 'read_gitfile_gently()' treats any non-regular file as 'READ_GITFILE_ERR_NOT_A_FILE' and fails to discern between 'ENOENT' and other stat failures. This flawed error reporting is noted by two 'NEEDSWORK' comments. Address these comments by introducing two new error codes: 'READ_GITFILE_ERR_MISSING'(which groups the "file missing" scenarios together) and 'READ_GITFILE_ERR_IS_A_DIR': 1. Update 'read_gitfile_error_die()' to treat 'IS_A_DIR', 'MISSING', 'NOT_A_FILE' and 'STAT_FAILED' as non-fatal no-ops. This accommodates intentional non-repo scenarios (e.g., GIT_DIR=/dev/null). 2. Explicitly catch 'NOT_A_FILE' and 'STAT_FAILED' during discovery and call 'die()' if 'die_on_error' is set. 3. Unconditionally pass '&error_code' to 'read_gitfile_gently()'. 4. Only invoke 'is_git_directory()' when we explicitly receive 'READ_GITFILE_ERR_IS_A_DIR', avoiding redundant checks. Additionally, audit external callers of 'read_gitfile_gently()' in 'submodule.c' and 'worktree.c' to accommodate the refined error codes. 2026-02-25refs: add GIT_REFERENCE_BACKEND to specify reference backendKarthik Nayak1-3/+52
Git allows setting a different object directory via 'GIT_OBJECT_DIRECTORY', but provides no equivalent for references. In the previous commit we extended the 'extensions.refStorage' config to also support an URI input for reference backend with location. Let's also add a new environment variable 'GIT_REFERENCE_BACKEND' that takes in the same input as the config variable. Having an environment variable allows us to modify the reference backend and location on the fly for individual Git commands. The environment variable also allows usage of alternate reference directories during 'git-clone(1)' and 'git-init(1)'. Add the config to the repository when created with the environment variable set. When initializing the repository with an alternate reference folder, create the required stubs in the repositories $GIT_DIR. The inverse, i.e. removal of the ref store doesn't clean up the stubs in the $GIT_DIR since that would render it unusable. Removal of ref store is only used when migrating between ref formats and cleanup of the $GIT_DIR doesn't make sense in such a situation. 2026-02-25refs: allow reference location in refstorage configKarthik Nayak1-4/+30
The 'extensions.refStorage' config is used to specify the reference backend for a given repository. Both the 'files' and 'reftable' backends utilize the $GIT_DIR as the reference folder by default in `get_main_ref_store()`. Since the reference backends are pluggable, this means that they could work with out-of-tree reference directories too. Extend the 'refStorage' config to also support taking an URI input, where users can specify the reference backend and the location. Add the required changes to obtain and propagate this value to the individual backends. Add the necessary documentation and tests. Traditionally, for linked worktrees, references were stored in the '$GIT_DIR/worktrees/<wt_id>' path. But when using an alternate reference storage path, it doesn't make sense to store the main worktree references in the new path, and the linked worktree references in the $GIT_DIR. So, let's store linked worktree references in '$ALTERNATE_REFERENCE_DIR/worktrees/<wt_id>'. To do this, create the necessary files and folders while also adding stubs in the $GIT_DIR path to ensure that it is still considered a Git directory. Ideally, we would want to pass in a `struct worktree *` to individual backends, instead of passing the `gitdir`. This allows them to handle worktree specific logic. Currently, that is not possible since the worktree code is: - Tied to using the global `the_repository` variable. - Is not setup before the reference database during initialization of the repository. Add a TODO in 'refs.c' to ensure we can eventually make that change. 2026-02-25setup: don't modify repo in `create_reference_database()`Karthik Nayak1-5/+2
The `create_reference_database()` function is used to create the reference database during initialization of a repository. The function calls `repo_set_ref_storage_format()` to set the repositories reference format. This is an unexpected side-effect of the function. More so because the function is only called in two locations: 1. During git-init(1) where the value is propagated from the `struct repository_format repo_fmt` value. 2. During git-clone(1) where the value is propagated from the `the_repository` value. The former is valid, however the flow already calls `repo_set_ref_storage_format()`, so this effort is simply duplicated. The latter sets the existing value in `the_repository` back to itself. While this is okay for now, introduction of more fields in `repo_set_ref_storage_format()` would cause issues, especially dynamically allocated strings, where we would free/allocate the same string back into `the_repostiory`. To avoid all this confusion, clean up the function to no longer take in and set the repo's reference storage format. 2026-01-12submodule: introduce extensions.submodulePathConfigAdrian Ratiu1-0/+7
The idea of this extension is to abstract away the submodule gitdir path implementation: everyone is expected to use the config and not worry about how the path is computed internally, either in git or other implementations. With this extension enabled, the submodule.<name>.gitdir repo config becomes the single source of truth for all submodule gitdir paths. The submodule.<name>.gitdir config is added automatically for all new submodules when this extension is enabled. Git will throw an error if the extension is enabled and a config is missing, advising users how to migrate. Migration is manual for now. 2026-01-09init: do parse _all_ core.* settings earlyJohannes Schindelin1-1/+1
In Git for Windows, `has_symlinks` is set to 0 by default. Therefore, we need to parse the config setting `core.symlinks` to know if it has been set to `true`. In `git init`, we must do that before copying the templates because they might contain symbolic links. Even if the support for symbolic links on Windows has not made it to upstream Git yet, we really should make sure that all the `core.*` settings are parsed before proceeding, as they might very well change the behavior of `git init` in a way the user intended. 2025-11-25odb: handle recreation of quarantine directoriesPatrick Steinhardt1-5/+0
In the preceding commit we have moved the logic that reparents object database sources on chdir(3p) from "setup.c" into "odb.c". Let's also do the same for any temporary quarantine directories so that the complete reparenting logic is self-contained in "odb.c". 2025-11-25odb: handle changing a repository's commondirPatrick Steinhardt1-39/+45
The function `repo_set_gitdir()` is called in two situations: - To initialize the repository with its discovered location. As part of this we also set up the new object database. - To update the repository's discovered location in case the process changes its working directory so that we update relative paths. This means we also have to update any relative paths that are potentially used in the object database. In the context of the object database we ideally wouldn't ever have to worry about the second case: if all paths used by our object database sources were absolute, then we wouldn't have to update them. But unfortunately, the paths aren't only used to locate files owned by the given source, but we also use them for reporting purposes. One such example is `repo_get_object_directory()`, where we cannot just change semantics to always return absolute paths, as that is likely to break tooling out there. One solution to this would be to have both a "display path" and an "internal path". This would allow us to use internal paths for all internal matters, but continue to use the potentially-relative display paths so that we don't break compatibility. But converting the codebase to honor this split is quite a messy endeavour, and it wouldn't even help us with the goal to get rid of the need to update the display path on chdir(3p). Another solution would be to rework "setup.c" so that we never have to update paths in the first place. In that case, we'd only initialize the repository once we have figured out final locations for all directories. This would be a significant simplification of that subsystem indeed, but the current logic is so messy that it would take significant investments to get there. Meanwhile though, while object sources may still use relative paths, the best thing we can do is to handle the reparenting of the object source paths in the object database itself. This can be done by registering one callback for each object database so that we get notified whenever the current working directory changes, and we then perform the reparenting ourselves. Ideally, this wouldn't even happen on the object database level, but instead handled by each object database source. But we don't yet have proper pluggable object database sources, so this will need to be handled at a later point in time. The logic itself is rather simple: - We register the callback when creating the object database. - We unregister the callback when releasing it again. - We split up `set_git_dir_1()` so that it becomes possible to skip recreating the object database. This is required because the function is called both when the current working directory changes, but also when we set up the repository. Calling this function without skipping creation of the ODB will result in a bug in case it's already created. 2025-11-25odb: move logic to disable ref updates into repoPatrick Steinhardt1-1/+1
Our object database sources have a field `disable_ref_updates`. This field can obviously be set to disable reference updates, but it is somewhat curious that this logic is hosted by the object database. The reason for this is that it was primarily added to keep us from accidentally updating references while an ODB transaction is ongoing. Any objects part of the transaction have not yet been committed to disk, so new references that point to them might get corrupted in case we never end up committing the transaction. As such, whenever we create a new transaction we set up a new temporary ODB source and mark it as disabling reference updates. This has one (and only one?) upside: once we have committed the transaction, the temporary source will be dropped and thus we clean up the disabled reference updates automatically. But other than that, it's somewhat misdesigned: - We can have multiple ODB sources, but only the currently active source inhibits reference updates. - We're mixing concerns of the refdb with the ODB. Arguably, the decision of whether we can update references or not should be handled by the refdb. But that wouldn't be a great fit either, as there can be one refdb per worktree. So we'd again have the same problem that a "global" intent becomes localized to a specific instance. Instead, move the setting into the repository. While at it, convert it into a boolean. 2025-11-24config: really treat missing optional path as not configuredJunio C Hamano1-1/+1
These callers expect that git_config_pathname() that returns 0 is a signal that the variable they passed has a string they need to act on. But with the introduction of ":(optional)path" earlier, that is no longer the case. If the path specified by the configuration variable is missing, their variable will get a NULL in it, and they need to act on it (often, just refraining from copying it elsewhere). 2025-11-19setup: convert `set_git_dir()` to have file scopePatrick Steinhardt1-40/+40
We don't have any external callers of `set_git_dir()` anymore now that `enter_repo()` has been moved into "setup.c". Remove the declaration and mark the function as static. Note that this change requires us to move the implementation around so that we can avoid adding any new forward declarations. 2025-11-19path: move `enter_repo()` into "setup.c"Patrick Steinhardt1-0/+81
The function `enter_repo()` is used to enter a repository at a given path. As such it sits way closer to setting up a repository than it does with handling paths, but regardless of that it's located in "path.c" instead of in "setup.c". Move the function into "setup.c". 2025-08-02string-list: align string_list_split() with its _in_place() counterpartJunio C Hamano1-1/+2
The string_list_split_in_place() function was updated by 52acddf3 (string-list: multi-delimiter `string_list_split_in_place()`, 2023-04-24) to take more than one delimiter characters, hoping that we can later use it to replace our uses of strtok(). We however did not make a matching change to the string_list_split() function, which is very similar. Before giving both functions more features in future commits, allow string_list_split() to also take more than one delimiter characters to make them closer to each other. 2025-07-23config: drop `git_config_set()` wrapperPatrick Steinhardt1-15/+15
In 036876a1067 (config: hide functions using `the_repository` by default, 2024-08-13) we have moved around a bunch of functions in the config subsystem that depend on `the_repository`. Those function have been converted into mere wrappers around their equivalent function that takes in a repository as parameter, and the intent was that we'll eventually remove those wrappers to make the dependency on the global repository variable explicit at the callsite. Follow through with that intent and remove `git_config_set()`. All callsites are adjusted so that they use `repo_config_set(the_repository, ...)` instead. While some callsites might already have a repository available, this mechanical conversion is the exact same as the current situation and thus cannot cause any regression. Those sites should eventually be cleaned up in a later patch series. Signed-off-by: Patrick Steinhardt <ps@pks.im> Signed-off-by: Junio C Hamano <gitster@pobox.com>
